Song Review: Damien “Jr. Gong” Marley - “My Sweet Lord”

Instead of nicking “He’s So Fine,” as George Harrison was accused of doing on “My Sweet Lord,” Damien “Jr. Gong” Marley kept it in the family and pilfered “Jammin’” for his stand-alone cover of Harrison’s early, post-Fab hit.

Leaving the trademark slide-guitar and backgrounds in place and adding some horns and wordless, improvised vocals, Marley casts Harrison’s number in sunshine and ganja.

Damian Robert Nesta “Jr. Gong” Marley (July 21, 1978) is a Jamaican DJ, singer, lyricist, and rapper. He is the recipient of four Grammy Awards.

He is the youngest son of reggae musician Bob Marley. He is the only child born to Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, a Jamaican jazz singer and crowned Miss World 1976. After seeing the movie Damien: Omen II, which is about the coming of the Antichrist, one of Bob’s last requests in Germany was to have his name changed. “Damien is a devil...It was inappropriate for him as a Rastafarian to have a child with that name,” Bob said and his name was changed.

He was two years old when his father died. His nickname “Junior Gong” is derived from his father’s nickname “Tuff Gong”. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
