Taash Companion Quest Spoilers

Oh, just your typical neurodivergent couple chatting after killing a dragon.

ok so Trick must have some sort of mind reading powers or been reading my journals or something. bc I have written/thought those exact words about getting 'stuck' in an emotion. So just being able to say "yo, SAME though!" in this convo was so nice.

And it's so heartwarming to have them be like 'you don't have to mask around me'. That's like the peak of emotional intimacy for anyone imo, but especially for those of us who are wired differently. The safety and and comfort and peacefulness of it. Ugh!

I would never have thought before I started it that I'd be considering making Taash my canon romance. They just aren't the type I usually go for. But they're definitely in the running.

Letter from Damian "Rook" Mercar-Hawke to Amelia Hawke

Mama,

Sorry that I haven’t been writing. You know more than most how this whole “hero” thing can get overwhelming quickly. For the past couple of months it’s been one unbelievable thing after the other. There’s so many stories I want to tell you and everyone back home. But that’s unfortunately not what this letter is for. There’s no easy way to say it, and I hope someone else has told you by now, but – Varric is dead.

When we stopped Solas' ritual it backfired and I hit my head. When I woke up afterwards Varric was in the next bed over in the infirmary, injured but alive, so I thought at the time. I’m not sure if it was a hallucination of my own mind, unable to deal with losing him, or if Solas was manipulating me with visions of him from the start. I’ve been seeing him convalescing in there, and having daily chats with him, this whole time. I should have known. I’ve… become close with someone here, a qunari friend of Isabela’s, and he wasn’t teasing me nearly enough about it. Or trying to embarrass me in front of them. I thought he was just tired and healing.

Weeks later, right after we finally managed to kill one of the blighted Evanuris, Solas managed to swap places with me, locking me in the fade in a prison full of my own regrets. His regrets have been eating away at him for thousands of years, he couldn’t fathom how someone could escape theirs. It was here I had to finally face the fact that Varric is gone. I didn’t want to accept it at first. My mind just froze for, what felt like a few moments but in the fade who knows how long it actually was. Not only because he was so important to me, but because of how important he is to so many people, perhaps you most of all Mama.

Thankfully, Varric (His spirit? My memory of him?) was there to help me come to terms with it and to remind me and reassure me that there was nothing I could have done differently that would have had a better outcome. Just before my team was able to pull me out of the Fade, he told me to give you a ‘big bear hug’ when I see you next and I certainly plan to honor that wish as soon as I can.

In the morning we gather our allies and head to Minrathous to finish what we started. I really think we can do it, Mama. We’ve got a good team and strong allies. Hopefully by the time this letter reaches you there will already be news of our victory spreading. Tonight I’m still pretty terrified though. Part of me wishes you and Papa could be here. I’d love to fight alongside you both and after dealing with Elgar’nan’s bullshit all these weeks, I’d so love to see Papa rip his blighted heart right out. But mostly I’m glad you’re far away from the center of all this. My team and I will take care of it. We lost people in the last battle, so we’ve got a score to settle.

Please give Papa, Evie, Aunt Beth, Merrill, and all the rest my love. You all try your best to stay safe and I’ll do my best to end this.

The Taash romancing continues with a very sweet convo, and a kiss!

The switch up on the height difference as he helps them stand is *chef's kiss*. And as a nonbinary person who has a complicated relationship with their mom, so many of Taash's scenes (this one especially) just hit different.

And Damian knows about expectations. His come mainly from his own mind and who he should be because of who his adoptive parents are, rather than from Amelia and Fenris themselves. (I mean think about it, he's a Shadow Dragon who can't tell anyone that he used to call The Blue Wraith 'papa'.)

But he struggles a lot with not feeling like enough. Feeling like all these famous figures spent time raising him and caring for him and training him- and if he doesn't make something of himself then they wasted their time and resources.

Then you've got this scene where he's telling Taash everything he has to remind himself of constantly. That you deserve to be the most genuine version of yourself and to be happy. And your parents, if they're good parents, that's all they really want for you too.

And then the 'purple' line is SO GOOD. Smoky or spicy? Come ON.

Spoilers for Taash's first romance scene...

Local Elf gets exactly what he asked for, proceeds to almost fumble the hottest person he's ever met in his life- news at 11.

The best thing is that I went directly from the scene where Bellara tells you you're good at talking, to this one where he's absolutely dumbfounded and tongue-tied.

Minor Spoils for Taash's Companion Quest

Look at my precious loser try to flirt!!!

"Rook - I guess he couldn't handle the heat. Isabela - Not like you can, huh? Rook - Oh, it doesn't bother me. Taash - (snorts)"

All I can think about is how Isabela's mind must be flashing to all the times (my Hawke) Amelia's sass and/or flirting got them in trouble, and Isabela's just like 'Damn, here we go again, like mother like adopted son, I guess'.

And Damian doesn't realize until 30 seconds later that he should maybe be embarrassed about flirting with his crush in front of (basically) his Aunt.

Damian Mercar Hawke aka "Rook"

(He's the adopted son of my Amelia Hawke and Fenris. Because I enjoy subjecting myself to severe emotional pain, apparently.)

His personality is pretty much what you’d expect of a kid who was sort of raised communally by the Kirkwall crew. Sarcastic to a fault, too charming for his his own good, and more empathy for those around him than is probably healthy. He always wanted the chance to prove himself a hero but he’s straight-up not having a good time with the reality of it.

In 9:38 Dragon, Amelia Hawke and Fenris found Damian and his sister, Evie, amongst a group of slaves they freed in Hasmal. The children's parents had died a few months prior and the local orphanage was already overfull. After being pulled away from her own siblings (by death in one case, and distance in the others), Amelia couldn’t bear to see Damian and Evie parted.

So she and Fenris decided Hasmal was as good a place to lay low as any. They adopted the two siblings and started renting a small house there. The four of them, plus Amelia's mabari, Sweets, lived together as a nice little domestic family for just over three years. Until Amelia got Varric's letter summoning her to Skyhold.

Fenris took the kids back to Kirkwall and, though he and Amelia weren’t there all the time, between Bethany, Merrill, Aveline and Donnic, and eventually Varric once he returned – the kids were well cared for and looked after. They even got to know the Inquisitor, Ianto Lavellan, after he moved to Kirkwall after disbanding the Inquisition in 9:44.

Damian left Kirkwall to join the Shadow Dragons shortly after his 20th nameday in 9:49 Dragon. He reconnects with Varric and starts helping him hunt Solas about 6 months before the beginning of the game.
