Fifty-Eight Years Ago
Today marks fifty-eight years since JFK was assassinated in Dallasโshot by (I assume) the lone gunman Lee Harvey Oswald.
I happened to be in town in 2008 and so made a pilgrimage to Dealey Plaza. I thought it was amazing how the place seemed unchanged. (I had never been there prior to that, mind you, but it seemed like no new construction or alterations had been made since the famous footage of Abraham Zapurder was taken.)
I had a small, awful, early digital camera and made these exposuresโa couple stitched together to form larger files. I feel the โXโ painted on the roadway to be in bad taste somewhat. I was but two when it happened, and used to think I remembered it, but now I figure I was most likely recalling poring over a special edition of LIFE magazine a few years later.
Seven images by Richard Koenig; taken in February of 2008.

I feel very emotional. I went there, convincing myself to not be too nervous or too excited, because things never go as planned and I couldnโt take being disappointed (especially since this wasnโt planned for tonight).
I wasnโt disappointed. Iโm not disappointed.
The only negative critique I can give them is the placement of Gustav IIIโs things, especially the Revolution Uniform. Like, what were they thinking?
The main objective with this rebuild of the main exhibition was to modernize it. It hadnโt been redone since the 1970โฒs when it moved to the current location and, when it was pointed out, it really showed. The main exhibition told the history of kings and of wars. I have been going there regularly for over a decade and I had never reflected over it, not even over the fact that the only place where the women were mentioned was in the room called โLeisure time and pleasure.โ This included our two reign queens. It was the history I had been taught, itโs the history still being taught. I didnโt know I was missing anything.
Or I knew. Iโve been reading about womenโs history and the history of women for years now. But Holly shit! The history we miss when we just look at half of it.
Here are three of my new favourite items on display, from left to right:
Masquerade dress, probably worn by Ulrika Eleonora of Denmark, Queen of Sweden, in the late 17th century
Wedding dress of Sofia Magdalena of Denmark, Queen of Sweden, 1766
Prussian Colonel uniform of Victoria of Baden, Queen of Sweden, 1908
Then there were the little things:
Glass made for the funeral of Louise of the Netherlands, Queen of Sweden and Norway, and given as gifts to her servants
Princess Anna Vasa of Swedenโs bracelet
The last, unfinished embroidery of King Gustav V of Sweden
And of course the old favourites:
The uniform Charles XII wore in Fredrikshald in 1718
The masquerade suit (and mask) Gustav III wore to the Opera in 1795
And the goddamn horse Gustav II Adolf rode in Lรผtzen in 1632
I stayed there for almost two hours, just walking around. I hadnโt realised quite how much I had missed this place. There were annoying teenagers giggling and laughing, there were a guide who talked too loud to the people who asked questions, there were men mansplaining our history to the women they were with... (I only jumped in once to correct them, I feel very proud of myself) but there werenโt that many people, it was spacious and calm and I could take photos of just about everything without getting people in the shot.
God, Iโm so happy I went there tonight. And yes, that is for real a 17th century horse.
My favourite museum reopened today. I really, really wanted to go, but have since long accepted that Iโm a working adult who canโt go to museum openings at 15:00 on a Monday. (Also, Monday? Since when do they have open on Mondays?) Now Iโve seen on their instagram that they have open until 21:00 tonight and wellโฆ I donโt think anything can stop me.

Now, it's 52 years, but I still stand by my theory. But add Castro, the League of Women Voters, the Elk Grove PA Jaycees, and 3 year old Barack Obama to my conspiracy list. I've been researchin'... ๐ป๐บ๐ป๐บ๐ป๐บ๐ป๐บ๐ป๐บ๐ป #JFK #Dallas1963 #conspiracytheory (at Wells Branch, Texas)

Just finished this unbelievably original and fascinating book. The book aims to point out all of the unbelievable hate and tension that had absorbed the city of Dallas in the moments following Kennedy's election and leading up to his assassination on 11/22/63. With such hateful attitudes and behavior advocated by the city's most wealthy and influential citizens, it almost makes you wonder why in the immediate aftermath of the assassination people were all too quick to blame the assassination on Cuba or Russia. This book proves beyond a shadow of a doubt, in 1963, Dallas was more than capable of robbing our country and the world of a brilliant leader who had so much more to teach us while simultaneously robbing our nation of its innocence, all on their own. #JFK #newbook #dallas1963
