reading the old as dirt dakkon comic is truly a joy beyond what i was expecting
Tumblr media
it is a short but gripping story about a character that while not present for much of the canon it's pretty much alive in spirit (and in my commander decks) but above all things, it's so funny that dakkon really only has two moods
1) completely unhinged, homicidal megalomaniac that would punch a child and kill on sight
Tumblr media
2) the shadow (ha) of a prideful, power-hungry man that lived far too long and is dying for the opportunity to vent to you, a poor little mew mew

Just seen a great D&D post on Reddit and posting a link here so I can find it again for reference later if I make a Gith character.

MAGIC PLANESWALKER ULTIMATE BRACKET, ROUND TWO OF FOUR!
Tumblr media
Can't prove it, but I got a feeling Gids would have gotten five across the eyes as soon as he laid a finger on the Blackblade without permission.
And Venser's a Corpse Puppet. Enjoy that mental image!
Make your choice!

It feels VERY different when you're playing a deck you've built yourself. I definitely recommend building one for a legend you like. There's a reason it's the most popular format.
Played my first games of MTG commander. Interesting casual format. Probably not for me so I鈥檒l just keep running the fallout deck.

Do you want to learn about one of my favorite Planeswalkers from before the Mending? Please check out this excellent, hour-long video about Taysir!
And while you're at it, watch Alice's other videos about early-Magic characters like Dakkon Blackblade and Daria.

Note
Are there Magic characters introduced as a nonplaneswalker character, then becoming a planeswalker later?
- Narset and Samut appears as a creature card on the first set of a block (KTK and AKH), then becomes a planeswalker on the last set of the block (DTK and HOU).
- Quintorius appears as a creature card on STX, ignites a spark on MOM, and gets a planeswalker card on LCI.
I'm looking for characters like Quintorius, who became a planeswalker years after their first appearance. Is there a precedence?
Urza was not revealed as a planeswalker until years after his was introduced on cards.
Ob Nixilis was just a demon with interesting flavor text at first.
Jared Carthalion, both in the comics and the cards.
Azor hasn鈥檛 even gotten a planeswalker card yet and he was introduced years and years before Ixalan block.
Dakkon was a Legend before his comic made him a planeswalker.
Nicol Bolas wasn鈥檛 a planeswalker until his appearance in the Legends II novels
Sivitri Scarzam wasn鈥檛 revealed as a planeswalker until the same book as Dakkon.
Garth and Greensleeves became walkers during their novels, and neither have planeswalker cards yet.
Slobad, Venser, and Karn became walkers after their introductions and legends.

Randomly decided to go through some legendary creatures and talk about how good I think they are, because clearly I'm qualified
Adun Oakenshield
Me: if it was 2 mana it could be playable, but at 3 it's shit
Cedhrec: 1678
Angus Mackenzie
Me: unsure. Could be good, but probably not
Cedhrec: 952
Arcades Sabboth
Me: shit. Even if he buffed power instead of toughness he'd still be awful. Even if he didn't set you back 3 mana he'd be bad
Cedhrec: 1866
Axelrod Gun arson(or Gunnarson if you're boring)
Me: shit. I'm looking at these as commanders, but even in a 1v1 game to my knowledge 5 mana for a 5/5 with trample is okay it best, so in a 1v1 setting with 20 life paying 3 extra just to occasionally do 1 damage and gain 1 life is complete shit. In commander, though, you have 40 life, and 4 players, so it's even worse.
Cedhrec: 2465
Ayesha Tanaka
Me: 4 mana for a 2/2 with banding is a comically bad rate that is not helped at all by the ability. It specifies 1 white mana, so it could work against non white decks, but it has to be an artifact, so it has to be a non white deck that uses artifacts. But hey, sol ring and other mana artifacts are pretty common in Cedh, but this can't target artifacts. It's such a specific hate piece for 4 mana that needs to tap to hate, it wouldn't be good in most formats, but this is commander, which doesn't have a sideboard, and I'm more specifically talking avout these being your commander, and if you're using your commander slot for this you might as well just play without a commander*
Cedhrec: 2346
Barktooth Warbeard
Me: shit. It's a vanilla and neither of its stats are higher than its mana cost.
Cedhrec: 2725
Bartel Runeaxe
Me: a 6 mana 6/5 with vigilance and a downside. Need I say more? Probably not but I will anyway. I know not being able to be targeted by aura spells COULD be an upside, since there are some offensive auras, but auras in general aren't very good, and this also protects it from your auras, so not good, and very bad as a commander
Cedhrec: 2721
Boris Devilboon
Me: I'm starting to realise how few cards are competitively viable, I think I'll start trying to be more lenient with these. Starting sfter this one, because it's a fucking 5 mana 2/2 that doesn't have every positive keyword in existence. 4 mana to create a token isn't a very good rate already, but you also have to tap it, so you can't even try to use a bunch of rituals cuz it's black and red to create a bunch of tokens. It doesn't matter if you found a way to give dark ritual storm and cast 50 spells before it, you get a single 1/1 demon. Even the name is an insult, they called it lesser.
Cedhrec: 2680
Chromium
Me: this is close to being decent, but permanently setting you back 3 mana is way too much. If it had trample and only set you back 2 it MIGHT be competitively viable, because then the rampage becomes useful, but without trample there's no reason not to just throw a 1/1 at it whenever it attacks, and at that point 3 mana every turn is way too much. 1 mana every turn would be too much considering it costs 8 mana. Flying helps it, but 8 mana PLUS an upkeep cost is too much
Cedhrec: 1786
Dakkon Blackblade
Me: kinda like Chromium, but closer. Just about any positive keyword other than banding or rampage would at least make this decent. A card that scales with you is good, but cedh has a lot of ramp with artifacts and stuff, and it doesn't check for those, so a chunk of your mana base won't affect it, but a lot of keywords could help it scale better. Lifelink could heal you as much as they damage. Sure life gain isn't too good, but I still think it could make this decent. Trample could allow there to be a difference between 8 lands and 80 lands even when your opponent has a lot of creatures. Flying, menace, or any other evasion ability could have a similar effect. Reach could also help, making them more of a defensive creature than offensive. Really anything, but with no abilities aside from their stats I don't think they're very good.

Tumblr media
"Ugh, I'm so tired... I need to get my main post for round two up, but I can barely keep my eyes open... I've got all the battles saved, I'll just do it in the morning..."
"... wait... how did someone comment on the 3feri vs. Freyalise battle...? CRAP I HIT QUEUE INSTEAD OF DRAFT ON THAT ONE"
Welcome to round 2, everybody! We had a great first round, with some tight fights and some absolute outright curbstompings. I gotta feeling this field of eight is gonna be equally as fascinating to watch.
Here are the battles!
Teferi, Time Raveler vs. Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury
Dakkon, Shadow Slayer vs. Venser, the Sojourner
Teferi, Master of Time vs. Tamiyo, Collector of Tales
Domri, Anarch of Bolas vs. Narset Transcendent
Ajani, the Greathearted vs. Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools
Daretti, Scrap Savant vs. Liliana, Death's Majesty
Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge vs. Grist, the Hunger Tide
Ral, Storm Conduit vs. Nissa, Steward of Elements
Have fun, gang!
