@fortunatetragedy tagged me just in time; I'm working on chapter 1 of The Siren and her Godking! Sirene and the Euphony Opera Company have just arrived on the island of Padena and are making their way through the capital of Viaserta.
“Does it smell good?” Daina comes up next to Sirene. Her long hair is tied in several intricate braids, and her brown skin is a shade darker than Sirene's. “I can smell some sort of frying dough.” “I smell lemons!” Sirene takes in another deep breath. “Padena is known for its fruits—grapes, pomegranates, lemons, and figs.” “Listen to you!” Daina elbows Sirene in the side and laughs, the lines creasing her face. “Did you do your research before we landed? I didn't see a library on the boat.” “I did a little research in Thessatraki,” Sirene admits with a blush. “Since it's my fault that we're moving to Padena, I wanted to know more about our new home.” Daina's jolly countenance falters, and her brows pucker. “Sirene, it's not your fault.” “We had to give up our touring schedule—” “And we've moved to paradise, with a contract paid for by the Godking of Padena themself! Sirene, I told you this was going to work out. And it could not have worked out better than it has.” Daina shifts the box in her arms so she has an arm free, which gently cups Sirene's cheek. “It's worth it. Promise me.” The worries that festered in Sirene's heart were smothered like a foul stench swept away by a fragrant wind. While it still lingered, it no longer rose to the ceiling of Sirene's lungs, threatening to suffocate her. She could breathe easier. “Thank you, Daina. I owe my life to you and Euphony.” The comforting hand turns into a gentle pinch. “You owe us nothing. Don’t give it another thought.”
