EPISODE 16: DEGESU
We're approaching final boss turf.
I need to know how significant of a chunk of this series runtime is the franchise recap. Nearly grinding my teeth over this one getting the full episode one version- it wasn't until Jaka Jaan started planning that I was sure I had clicked on the right episode.
That gripe aside, the gang is finally making their way into the dragon's den, Gomah's palace. Degesu, sensing the danger, supposes now's the time to move Baby Dende, who is not taking it lightly.
Before our team can storm the palace, it's time to face off against the Gendarmerie Force, full routine and everything, while Goku and Vegeta get a real bad case of deja mustard deja vu. But, the force didn't get the power scaling memo and are completely outclassed by Vegeta, even with their toughest fireballs (which is deja vu of another variety).
They turn the tables and tie up the loose ends and continue on their quest into enemy territory, but not before Goku mooches potato chips off of one of the Gendarmeries.
Degesu's escape with Dende in the multi-perspective hall of stairs ends up having the Saiyans, Shin, and Piccolo right on his tail... and Panzy not far behind because she senses something's not right.
First off, why does Goku need to do his Instant Transmission pose to sense energy? I suppose it makes sense because they thought Dende's energy would be farther away, but why not make the leap while you're already committed to the two fingers?
Second, was I the only one low-key expecting a Scooby-Doo chase?
They catch up, but Degesu is not above shooting a child for an ultimatum. Or an 82-year-old child. Shin and Degesu make up for a lost millennium of time by having a smarm fest.
I shouldn't have laughed as hard as I did at Goku asking what Shin actually does in his job as Supreme Kai given he had an actual answer instead of it being a "he's bad at his job" joke.
Before we can question why Degesu seemed in a real hurry to leave with Dende, Glorio comes in with the rescue by chucking Chekhov's Silly Hat at him, Panzy making the catch. Dende's real happy to see Goku.
This better not be Panzy's 'I want kids now' moment because we are not demoting another strong female character to housewife and, even with the wacky demon world aging making her older than she looks, any potential ship at the moment would look real weird.
Some of King Kadan's men lead off a tied up Degesu, oddly towards a cliff. The way it was so silent I thought they were about to execute him on screen. Did he get executed off screen???
Task two: Head to the Tamagami!
Meanwhile, Gomah is having an awful time trying to extract the Third Eye from the belt and only has success with a plunger- an idea he gets after his brainstorming piss break.
The heroes find the Tamagami with no Dragon Ball, prompting Arinsu to make her grand reveal- along with Kuu and Duu, both very sleepy.
Glorio's starting to sweat. His boss is here.
Gomah finally gets his Third Eye attached and starts morphing into an absurd size, gritty muscles and everything. Got worried for a moment when he got the horn curl because I thought he was going to turn Janemba-style Tumblr Sexyman... thank goodness it's just Large Gomah.
Next episode: A fantastical battle between the heroes and the Majins. Glorio helping is a good sign... Piccolo's finally taking off the weighted turban and cape, so you know it's getting serious.
I can't help but feel the Glorio betrayal's imminent and even though I sense it coming, it's still going to hurt because that is one of my platonic husbandos right there. I cling to villains as my faves for some reason not because I condone them but because I think they're neat. Throw a morally grey conflicted villain there and you've got me emotionally attached. If he dies, I'm going to be a wreck.
EPISODES WITHOUT KNOWING HANVI'S WHEREABOUTS: 16
Committing to the bit at this point
Also, heads up, if anything big happens in next few episodes, please be wary of spoiling me in asks or anything. Due to my current schedule, I can't watch the weekly episodes until at least 3PM EST. Just assume if I haven't posted my spoiler commentary, I haven't seen it yet. Haven't run into any problems so far, but just putting it out there since it's final battle season.

That's it? No resolution?? Shin is just gonna watch his brother get taken away and say nothing??? Not to him or the others at least?
#dragon ball daima#daima liveblogging#supreme kai#shin dragon ball#degesu#I know Toriyama stated he was never good at writing relationships#but why bother introducing Shin's siblings as antagonists if they weren't gonna interact with each other in any meaningful way#it feels like such a throwaway fact. 16 episodes in and Shin is just now facing Degesu and Arinsu#The one confrontation between Degesu and Shin just wasn't satisfying because there was never any building tension

Degesu May Not Be the Villain.
I honestly don't think Degesu will be bad for long. Though he despises Shin, I think it may be because Shin actually escaped the demon realm, leaving them behind. It said that he was "too ambitious and didn't get along with other Glinds," and that's why he stayed in the demon realm, but I think he stayed out of either resentment or fear. In the first episode of Daima, you can see how jumpy he is of Gomah and even Dr. Arinsu.
Even Gomah is scared. I think they know that Arinsu is basically a rouge scientist, and they're scared of what she can do. Either that or it's because siblings are... scary.
-
EDIT: I THINK IT'S CONFIRMED.
The new episode was just dropped and Degesu seemed downright TERRIFIED of having to disable Warp-sama. I don't know why. Maybe because Degesu now knows he'll never be able to leave the demon realm, or maybe he secretly wanting the Z fighters to win, but is regretful for having to trap them in.
-
EDIT 2: Thanks to @nightkibbles06 for pointing out this very insane detail after the outro of episode 15 (I skipped the outro so I had no idea :\)
Degesu is an absolute MENACE! This changes so much for the plot. I thought he didn't want to work with Gomah, but now this? But it doesn't seem right since they wanted him alive. Perhaps Degesu is betraying Gomah!? Though it doesn't look like he's on the Z Fighters' side. I'm so excited to see how Shin gets involved in this tbh.
Degesu has shown us his dark side. Get ready folks, cause episode 16 will be a roller-coaster for all of us.
~
EDIT 3: Bruh
No extra words needed. Just bruh
#dragon ball daima#gomah#degesu#shin#supreme kai#dr arinsu#Shin did not get involved :/#BREH bro got knocked out by piccolo -_-#How sad

With Magilumiere S1 finished, here's how individual episodes ranked in Japan's Top 10 TV Animation ranking over the past few months (scores in "average household ranking"):
Week of October 7: Episode 1 — 2.7%, 7th place
Week of October 14: Episode 2 — 2.3%, 10th place
Week of November 4: Episode 6 — 2.4%, 9th place
Week of November 18: Episode 8 — 2.6%, 6th place (tie)
Week of November 25: Episode 9 — 3.0%, 5th place (tie)
Week of December 2: Episode 10 — 2.8%, 7th place
Week of December 9: Episode 11 — 2.5%, 9th place
Week of December 16: Episode 12 — 2.7%, 7th place
Usually every week, the top ranking animation programs tend to be classic long-running children's shows like Sazae-san, Chibi Maruko-chan, Doraemon, Crayon Shin-chan, and Detective Conan. Below those, One Piece, the yearly PreCure, and Dragon Ball (Kai, Super, and now Daima), tend to rank most weeks.
The leftover spots on the ranking tend to be split over seasonal anime. For example, this Fall 2024 anime season, Blue Miburo has been ranking abnormally high, even as high as third place for the week of December 15. In the Winter 2024 season earlier this year, Frieren and Apothocary Diaries ranked high for a few weeks.
Going back to this Fall season, Magilumiere has had two-thirds of its episodes rank within the Top 10 Weekly Animation rankings. And of the last two episodes, it has even ranked above Wonderful PreCure (Episodes 10 and 12 outranked One Piece as well). That's incredibly insane, and if a Season 2 annoucement hadn't already been made prior to the finalized rankings, I would have said this boded really well for a second season. This is truly the best original Magical Girl anime of the year.

DAIMA EP 16 (Spoiler) Review/theories
• Had a mini panic attack when it looked like Degesu was gonna drop Dende. Anyone else?
• Man, the fact this series was originally meant to be a web series isn't doing it any favors. We even saw Raditz again. Ho-ly. Dragon Ball already gets a bad rep for characters just standing around & this episode is an example of that. Someone give this episode's director a talking to, please.
• The battle between the Gendarmerie force & Vegeta was a wet fart, as expected. Mashim(u)'s defeat was especially disrespectful. But they were surprisingly good sports about it. Gaimoi giving Goku his chips was cute, at least. I almost don't wanna know what flavor they were...
• Really? Those Galactic Donut restraints are just gonna unexplained?
• That unnamed Demon woman, whom I will refer to as "Money Demon" for now, got the special-extra-character-acting-animation treatment along for King Gohma this episode. I was worried that'd be an episode 1 exclusive.
• Panzy, honey, you can fly. You don't need to follow on foot. Though I do enjoy a good "running-stops to wheeze-keeps running" gag.
• Degesu sorta implies that Shin has been an active Kaio-shin for over a millennium. He also points a gun at a baby. Yikes.
• "It's a Glind's nature to seek higher positions." Yeah? In the Demon Realm, maybe.
• To no surprise, Degesu wanted to be the Supreme Demon King. To what end? It goes unexplained since he was thwarted by a hat. (At least something came from that trade for the Eye) well, he was actually karate chopped in the throat by Piccolo, so, guess Piccolo got to take down a main antagonist... Meh.
• Panzy weaponized a fly swatter, did you catch that?
• It doesn't feel like it's over for Degesu, though. That was TOO easy.
• Goku says that Tamagami #1 looks stronger than the other two. If that's actually true, maybe it has to do with how close it is to the Supreme King's castle.
• Nah, that Dr Arinsu pan-up from a boob shot was nuts.
• Well Glorio, the time has finally come for you to confess & immediately side with Goku.
• Yo, why Kuu looking so serious? Waking up from your nap got you grumpy, bud?
• Wasn't expecting King Gohma getting the Third Eye lodged in his forehead to be so silly. I loved every second of that.
• King Gohma gets the G.O.D Toppo build, as expected. Or maybe it's closer to a certain someone's transformation towards the end of "Sand Land".
• Looks like next episode is gonna pop off like crazy.

Dragon Ball DAIMA Episode 16 - "Degesu"
…just…what do I say about this episode? There’s so much I want to say right now, but obviously, spoilers prevent me from doing so. Just…I’m just going to get into reviewing the episode so that I can cover that stuff. We have the recap section that just covers Dragon Ball as a whole in this episode…for whatever reason. Guys, we’re getting closer to if we’re not already in the end game, can we…

Dragon Ball Daima episode 16:
I think this episode's script is much improved compared to episode 15's – particularly the second half got a couple of smiles out of me again.
The biggest issue I've had with these last two episodes in particular (14-15) is the lack of energy and personality and I finally felt it come back here.
To me they weren't even bad episodes (particularly 14 had some really good direction), just "bland", with the fun characterisation and lore of the first half of the series taking a backseat to plot progression to get the series where it needs to be on its final leg.
The main reason why I think episode 16's script is an improvement over what came before is because while the first half doesn't deliver on the animation and direction department as well as it should, so any of the comedy doesn't really hit as strongly as it should (Vegeta's fight could've been really funny given better technical execution), the second half does because the stronger execution (some really great animation and atmospheric and dynamic direction) actually complements the scenarios really well.
The ideas are really fun!
The contrast between the two halves of this episode is a great example of how good script is very much complemented by everything else.
I'm very much a fan of cutting through the surface, so to speak – weaker production very rarely shakes my love for a series if I think the underlying ideas and writing is good, but I think this is a great example of how it can impact a story.
Last week's episode also didn't really feel like Dragon Ball to me, but this one very much does, just Dragon Ball that's not fully realised in terms of potential.
And currently I do get the sense the finale will make up for any of the issues this section of the story has had because I think this series has had much more good than bad in it.
You never know, of course, but I very much am hopeful based on next week's episode preview, as well – all they need to do is keep up the energy, lean into all of those personalities finally clashing in this all-out crazy/fun battle and back this up on the production front for the cherry on top.
I'm *also* not a super fierce advocate of the ending of a story needing to be perfect for the whole story to not suck in hindsight.
I consider several of my favourite series/stories to have imperfect or even bad endings.
Do good endings help, though? For sure. I think I might have just as many faves I consider to have perfect/well-written endings than I do ones with endings I don't like.
And a solid ending certainly can soften the blow on any flaws the story might have – so here's hoping for Daima to end the best it possibly could and if it doesn't, well, I'll be sad because the final bit of work one of the most recognised artists in the world was involved with deserves to be the best it can be.
But I would also not really be surprised because the original Dragon Ball series is one of those series I love despite the many issues I have with it, including the ending. In a way, a clumsy ending would actually be very in-character.
GT is the only DB series that did nothing for me no matter how much I have thought about it (and this was many episodes before I saw the finale), so I think even with a clumsy ending, I'd still appreciate Daima for the times it did capture the magic (particularly the early days) of the series.

EPISODE 1: CONSPIRACY
Hello, hello! Welcome back to weekly Dragon Ball commentary- feels good to say that, these posts were my roots on this website.
I would like to thank a friend for sharing their Crunchyroll and to apologize in advance to my roommate who has already caught me mid-ramblings- sorry, bestie, this is going to last several more Fridays.
Anyway, onto our very first episode of Dragon Ball Daima!
Firstly, an amazing "welcome back to Dragon Ball" recap. Since the Power Pole is due to make its comeback, I'm not surprised that they didn't forget to include a reference to the series roots in OG Dragon Ball- and the fade to them growing up AAAAHHH MY HEART
"Saiyans are known for appearing youthful for longer"- OH YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW
And speaking of recapping, we're introduced to the silly little demon clown guy, Gomah, and Shin's out-of-nowhere brother, Degesu, as they do an abridged Mystery Science Theater of the Buu Arc. Apparently, all powerful Demon Not-Kais still rely on pen and paper to take notes.
With no one left to oppose him after the disposal of the Majins and Dabura, Gomah's the king of the Demon Realm. And turns out Shin also has an out-of-nowhere sister too, Dr. Arinsu. Wonder why she has the God of Destruction gold collar? Might be relevant, might just be jewelry.
It's looking like I may have to finally dip my toes in the Xenoverse lore... we're getting suspiciously close to Towa territory.
However, Goku and his friends pose a threat to Gomah's power- because of course they do, it's Goku and friends- so we need a way to nerf them in the way that's not an evil wish. So, let's turn them into kids! GT BUT ON PURPOSE!
The Demon Realm has their own Dragon Balls created by a senile Namekian they picked up off the street, but they're guarded by these figures called the Tagamis- safe bet that they'll be fighting the Tagamis later.
We have a confirmed timeline placement! It's not long after the Buu Saga and Trunks is turning nine. Gohan is conveniently off studying... why the exclusion? We don't know yet.
And now for the two casual lore drop points that I proceeded to ramble about because my roommate had just walked in:
Saiyans get growth spurts at 15
I guess this was a casual excusing of Goten and Trunks still being short in Super and it sort of lines up with Goku in original DB. He grew slightly, but I guess he was a late bloomer because he was still rather petite at the King Piccolo fight where (not counting Minus) he was 16.
But, Gohan! He had a decent amount of height at 11 in the Cell Saga. Perhaps he got a little more of the Ox King genetics than Goten did.
Goku then proceeds to slander Vegeta's height and- "He's right behind me, isn't he?"
THE SECOND POTARA RETCON
Yep, it happened again. We went from "Potara fusion is permanent, we don't know what happened with Vegito" to "Potara fusion is permanent for Supreme Kais, but if it's two mortals, it's a hour" to, now, "it was Buu's stomach acid the whole time!"
So, instead of using the Dragon Balls to separate like in Super, Kibito Kai just had Buu eat them and spit them out.
I guess this helps confirm that Daima's running on its own track and won't lead into Super. Does this mean we have three separate canons now? I'm okay with this. At least this means my fanfics are safe.
Also, looking a bit pale there, Kibito.
Back to the plot:
Seems that all of the Namekians were originally from the Demon Realm! The Demon Gang can tell because of the pointy ears- I'm getting Owl House flashbacks.
Then what does that mean for Mr. Popo?
The old Namekian magnetizes all the Dragon Balls to the lookout- because of course he can- then reactivates them from their stone state- because of course he can.
Shenron's not dealing with any monkey's paws today and he's not going to guess like Ultimate Shenron did in GT- you're going to want to input all the settings you want for your turn people into kids wish. The adult gang are all first graders and the kids are now babies.
THE WISH HITS RIGHT AT THE END OF THE EPISODE
We'll have to deal with the fallout of this next episode. Hope someone fills Gohan in.
---
Feel free to send asks- I'll screenshot them if there's spoilers so I can put the question under a Keep Reading break if need be- or have a discussion in the replies.
Otherwise, stay tuned for more of my ramblings next Friday!

Dragon Ball Daima episode 15:
I think this was the least "Dragon Ball" feeling episode of the series so far.
I think Dragon Ball has pretty much literally never done exposition separate from the present narrative to explain some plot detail as with the Evil Eye in this episode. It's not necessarily a poor story choice, but it is out of character for DB.
The action is messy. It's often stiff, but even when it looks good, framed poorly and as a result doesn't have much weight.
The episode has some awkward writing elements this series has in general avoided: so much of the episode is spent avoiding the gunfire, to the point where Vegeta needs a Revive Bug when he does get hit, but right afterwards everyone just sort of still wins and drives back the army without fanfare.
For the supposed danger of the gunfire, the constant barrage also just seems to not conviniently hit ever and if it does, the issue with it is resolved immediately. It feels like with better writing and storyboarding, this could've been a really cool strategic episode of finding openings and the fighters using their strength in smart ways.
Add to that, Goku turns Super Saiyan pretty easily at the very end, making you ask why Goku and Vegeta didn't just bulldoze the entire army to begin with because it was so easy.
With earlier instances it made sense because the fighters were getting used to the limitations of the Demon World. Even with the giants a couple of episodes back, the size and scale difference explained the struggle.
And this convinient resolution essentially happens twice: the second instance of this occurs when they've made it closer to the palace, where it looks like the team is struggling, but then on top of the prior convinience, other allies show up, as well and even with a brief fakeout, they still just sort of defeat the army with the supposed capability of creating "10-day long" intense gunfire with the ability to paralyse.
It would've been really cool for future battles if there were some sort of limitation placed on Goku (or any of the fighters) resulting from the paralysing effect of the guns.
The casual dialog during the gun barrage while the characters essentially just sat there was a cherry on top in terms of undercutting any sense of danger this leg of the journey could've had.
So, as I brought up above, why not just defeat the army right away by turning Super and then use the Revive Bug in case they tire out since they do still have a bunch of them?
As much as I defend Super, this is in the ballpark of that series' issues. Obvious instances of struggles being undercut by convinience or an event just sort of "happening" without any elaboration. In many of Super's cases you could just see it as a second wind, but here none of the characters were strugglong to begin with, so we don't even have this explanation.
This might be my least favourite episode of the series so far because the only element I truly like about it is some of the action.
Even Panzy's family showing up, while cute, was buried under everything else, but I still think I don't hate the episode?
It's connective tissue instead of a turning/high point, so if there is one place for a dud to happen, it's here. Its issues are very much contained within itself, not really retroactively affecting anything in the series.
That said, I heard Toriyama's death happened around when episode 16 was in production and that has me worried because if the writing took a hit at this point, his involvement might've been more important to the quality of the series than initially thought.
I really hope they land the final stretch, just for the symbolic nature of this series being the last bit of the Dragon Ball storytelling Toriyama has ever worked on.
