Daily Dino Dose!
🦕 today's dino is the Allosaurus 🦖
(: because it's my favourite and a great way to start this series :)
This magnificent beast was a top notch predator that lived in the late jurassic period, with thunder thighs, dozens of teeth, around 8.3m of pure awesomeness, a light but strong skull and powerful arms -suck it T-rex- it was a fierce hunter just like the his cousins from the bipedal theropod gang and could definitely flip you off if it so desired.
This bad boy ate mainly big herbivores and the occasional form of cannibalism. Scientists still debate on its hunting strategy, ranging from caring parents that function on a pack formation to lone predators that'd defo destroy anything stupid enough to step into its territory... alas a complicated case that only gets more confusing with time.
Allosaurus means "weird lizard" and boy oh boy does it's history lives up to that. First appearing in 1869 during the Bone Wars, being wrongly classified, receiving many names, being forgotten for awhile, getting caught in a scientific feud, more wrong classifications, being forgotten again until finally being exposed in 1908 with the name of Antrodemus -ew- then 50 years later finally settling on the good ol Al we recognize and love.
With 6 named species but only 3 officially recognized ( A. fragilis, A. europaeus and A. jimmadseni). Fragilis and jimmadseni are found in North America with the main difference being the shape of the jaw, while europaeus are found in Portugal and don't show any anatomical singularities that would separate it from fragilis.
This dino has risen in popularity as time goes on and became one of the vastly recognized characters, especially after the release in 2000 of "The Ballad of Big Al" by BBC. It holds special value to me as "Walking With Dinosaurs" was how my father introduced me to the amazing world of palaeontology

Just learned that there's a theory that triceratops ate bones to fill their need for calcium and like, I know there are animals that do this but it's so badass to think of an already pretty cool herbivore to just be munching on some bones.
I just think they are neat.

🦕 today's dino is the Diplodocus 🦖
(: because I do love them spaguetti shaped animals :)
This absolute unit of a reptile lived in the late jurassic period and was equipped with four sturdy as heck legs, a tiny head, a tail with 80 vertebrae that may have been used as defence or making some type of noise similar to a whip -kinky- and one, i repeat, ONE claw on it's front paw. Scientists are still debating its use but in my opinion it would've been used to flip other jealous sauropods that didn't have it.
The Diplodocus was more on the chill side and as such chose to have a diet which consisted of plants, chomping on trees and bushes, but alas, it was "not like other sauropods" and chose an unilateral stripping method for eating. This shows because its teeth have a different shape from its cousins and even from its young, this strategy was made so that there were no food competitions between species or age groups.
Diplodocus means "double beam", relating to its uncommon structure observed on the tail bones, but truth be told its discovery story is unfortunately not so rare. Discovered in 1877 during the Bone Wars it ended up caught up in, you guessed it, a scientific feud once again, between classifications and the second dinosaur rush a complete mould was finally exposed in 1899 as Diplodocus longus.
There are 4 possible species but only 2 are recognized (D.carnegii and D. hallorum). The main difference between the two is the amount of fossils, while D.carnegii had a full skeleton known -aka Dippy-, D. hallorum is composed of a few vertebrae and minor skeletal parts which are not enough to determine its position.
By being part of the most well known and recognizable dinos due to the amount of remains found including bones -duh-, footprints and even skin impressions, it's again, a character present in the BBC documentary Walking with Dinosaurs.
-for me it's one of the cutest episodes bcz tiny spaguettis :(( -

Daily Dino Dose!
🦕 today's dino is the Archeopteryx 🦖
(: because a bird shat on my head so i have to expose its possible ancestors :)
This midget insufferable chicken project lived in the late jurassic period, grew until the astoundingly unimpressionable size of 50cm, jaws with teeth, a long tail, feathers that have flight adaptations, toes with the killing claws and 3 fingers -which puts him on the could flip u off class-.
The self-righteous gasbag was supposedly carnivorous and would consume anything from insects to small lizards and mammals, plus the poor compsognathus who roamed the 3m tall vegetation on the islands around the Solnhofen Lagoon -and after the dinner they'd prrl climb up somewhere just to poop while gliding on a distracted creature like a loser-.
Archeopteryx means "old feather" -but if it was by me could also mean old fart- as it's first found fossil was that of one of its feathers in either 1860 or 1861...that is, until 2019, when they discovered that it actually might not be that of an archeopteryx...that is, until 2020 when they said that it is one of its feathers, just from a body part other then the wings...
Once there were 12 different species, one for each found fossil, but since 2007 only 2 are recognized the A. lithographica, with the specimens from London and Solnhofen, while  A. siemensii are present in the Berlin, Munich, and Eichstatt finds. The main differences are the sizing of some bones, teeth shape and claw flexors.
The popularity of this dino is obvious due to the certainty of the existence of feathers, a brain more similar to birds and some other characteristics that would put it in a "missing link" position. While it's connection to modern birds can, is and will be debated for years to come nobody -not even me- can deny how mesmerising this featherhead is...was bcz y'know...it's dead.
