The fall of the Western Roman Empire gives me such hope.
Empires fall. There is not one single empire that has lasted more than, hmm, maybe eight centuries? (Don't quibble me on that, I'm not checking Wikipedia while I write this.) Cultures last, sure, but they change, enormously, over time.
What lasts through empires, what lasts through cultural upheaval, what lasts through paradigm shifts, is people.
Small groups of people, working together, last through everything.
When the WRE crumbled under the combined weight of internal conflict, over-reliance on mercenaries, and pressure from people displaced by the Hun expansion, small groups of people were still ... everywhere. Small groups of people illuminated manuscripts. Small groups of people sailed the entire Mediterranean, trading. Small groups of people opened trading posts up and down the Volga and Dnepier. Small groups of people sailed the Indian Ocean. Small groups of people farmed, and cleared land, and kept animals, and spun and wove, they lived and lived and lived and lived.
Either worlds never end, or they end all the time, but either way, people continue.
I do not know the shape of what will come as this world's ending rolls on, but I know people will be there.

saw this tattoo on the lady in front of me this morning and thought of the post that said "finding people who read your favourite book is like having a book recommending a person".
I just think that a simple thing such as liking the same thing as someone else can tell so much about a person.
who are the kinds of people who like this same thing? what does it reveal about them, their personality, their likes and dislikes? and to have such a profound dialogue tatooed on to your body.
it's the discreet feeling of finding someone just like you; like a secret connection or code.
i think i fell a little bit more in love with the little surprises of the world today.

Marble Head of Alexander the Great Uncovered in Turkey
The head of a statue determined by archaeologists to belong to Alexander the Great, was unearthed during excavations in north-western Turkey.
The marble head, dated to the 2nd century AD, was found at the top of a theater in the ancient city of Konuralp, near modern-day Düzce.
While most parts of the ancient theater have been unearthed during the excavations, similar historical remains such as the head of the Apollo statue and the head of Medusa were previously found in the upper part of the structure.
During the excavations carried out in the Konuralp Ancient Theater excavation area, archaeologists identified an artifact in the ground at the top of the theater area. As they kept digging, they removed the artifact, which appeared to be the head of a bust.
As a result of the consultation of history experts, it was determined that the bust head found belonged to the Macedonian King Alexander the Great.
In a statement, Konuralp Museum provided information about why they determined the bust to belong to Alexander the Great.
“The head, measuring 23 centimeters [from head to neck] was found during the excavations in the ancient theater. It is depicted with deep and upward-looking eyes made of marble, drill marks on the pupil and a slightly open mouth that does not show much of its teeth.
“His long curly hairstyle up to his neck and two strands of hair [Anastoli] in the middle of his forehead are like the mane of a lion. This depiction is a hair type typical of Alexander the Great,” the statement said.

The marble head of Alexander the Great delivered to Konuralp Museum
Historical Konuralp is 8 km north of Düzce; first settlements there go back to 3rd century BC. Until 74 BC, it was one of the most important cities belonging to Bithynia, which included Bilecik, Bolu, Sakarya, Kocaeli.
It was conquered by Pontus and then by the Roman Empire. During the Roman period, the city was influenced by Latin culture, and it changed its name to Prusias ad Hypium. Later on Christianity affected the city and after the separation of the Roman Empire in 395, it was controlled by the Eastern Roman Empire (the later Byzantine Empire).
In 1204, the Crusader armies invaded Constantinople, establishing the Latin Empire. Düzce and its surroundings are thought to be under the dominance of the Latin Empire during this period. Düzce was under Byzantine rule again from 1261 to 1323.
The Konuralp Museum has some rare exhibits. A 1st-century sarcophagus, Orpheus mosaic, the mosaic of Achilles and Thetis and the 2nd-century copy of Tyche and Plutus sculpture are among the notable items in the museum. There are 456 ethnographic items.
In the ethnography section clothes, weapons, and daily-usage articles about the late Ottoman era are exhibited. There are also 3837 coins from Hellenistic to Ottoman era.

The Restoration of the Roman Republic ... in the Middle Ages? The Forgotten Commune of Rome
Today it seems men often have Rome on their minds with Tik Toks and polls indicating that men often think about Rome on a daily basis. I'm assuming that most of these thoughts revolve around the Roman Empire, lesser so the Roman republic, some the Eastern Roman (Byzantine Empire), and few think about the Roman monarchy. However I guarantee that almost no one thinks about the medieval Roman Republic known as the Commune of Rome.
In the 12th century central Italy was directly ruled by the Pope through the Papal States. One of the hot topic political issues of the day was the "investiture controversy", which was debate over who had the power to install bishops and other important clergy; the Pope or secular authorities. This evolved into a debate on who would have ultimate governing authority, the Pope, or the secular government, most notably the Holy Roman Empire. At the time, many cities in Italy were growing disgruntled with the rule of the Pope and the rule of nobles who supported the Pope. This resulted in popular uprisings in which cities overthrew the Papal government and declared themselves independent, thus forming various city states and communes in Italy.
In 1143 a wealthy Italian banker named Geordano Pierlione led a revolt against Papal authority, kicking the Pope out of Rome and declaring an independent Commune of Rome. The next year a monk and priest named Arnold of Brescia arrived in the city, becoming the intellectual leader of the movement and establishing the new Roman Republic. Arnold was a controversial reformer who railed against abuses of Church and Papal authority, decried Church corruption, and advocated a thorough reformation of the Church. Among his ideas he believed that clergy needed to return to apostolic poverty, renouncing all wealth and ownership of property, and also renouncing secular political power. Here's a statue of him in Brescia, Italy today.
Tumblr media
With Arnold at it's head a new Roman government was formed and modeled after the ancient Roman Republic, with 56 senators who were not of noble class, 4 from each of Rome's medieval districts, and executive authority invested in a "patrician". The new republic refused to use the title "consul" as it had become an inherited noble title after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Nobles and aristocrats above the rank of knight were not allowed and thus most noble titles were abolished.
Of course the Pope, then Lucius II, was not going to tolerate such a rebellion and attempted to take back the city. In 1145 he formed an army and laid siege to the city. Amazingly the Romans drove away the invaders, with Pope Lucius II being killed in the battle after being bonked in the head with a rock.
The new republic flourished; drafting news laws, reforming medieval Roman society, making alliances with other Italian city states and war with others, setting up courts, and minting coins.
Tumblr media
The Roman army was reformed, and a new capital building was constructed on the Capitoline Hill known as the Palazzo Senatorio (the Senate Palace), which still stands today but is much different after being heavily renovated by Michelangelo in the 1530's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally the new Roman Republic swore fealty to the Holy Roman Emperor. However Rome and the Empire had a falling out. In 1149 the Roman Senate invited the German king Conrad III to the city to be coronated Roman Emperor. Rome's enemies were growing, so the Roman Senate offered Conrad this title in return for protection. Conrad had already been elected as Holy Roman Emperor and was due to be coronated, but the Roman Senate was proposing that he be THE Roman Emperor, as in like, a real Roman Emperor whose authority is defined by the Roman Senate, and not a Holy Roman Emperor whose authority was defined by the Pope and a loose confederation of high ranking German, Italian, Austrian, and Czech nobles. In the Holy Roman Empire the emperor is elected by the highest ranking nobles of the land. The Roman Senate was claiming that it had the authority to choose Roman emperors as the senate did during the ancient Roman Empire. Well, lets just say that Conrad probably didn't take too kindly to the Roman Senate attempting to usurp the governing structure of the Holy Roman Empire. In the middle ages a group of lower class burghers and knights cosplaying as Roman senators was not a good basis for a Europe spanning universal imperial monarchy. When Conrad died he was already cutting a deal with the Pope to snuff out the republic.
Conrad died in 1152 but his successor, Frederick Barbarossa continued the deal with the Pope to end the Roman Republic. It was one of the few times Frederick and the Pope agreed on anything. In 1155 a combined Papal/Imperial army invaded Rome. The city quickly fell and Arnold of Brescia was captured and burned at the stake. His ashes were scattered into the Tiber River.
Tumblr media
Amazingly the Roman Republic lived on. Frederick Barbarossa was coronated by Pope Adrian IV as Holy Roman Emperor, an act which led to a new revolt among the Romans. Frederick put down this revolt, killing 1,000 Romans in the process, but afterwards he simply left the city and never returned after becoming bogged down in the complex politics of Italy. The Pope also left Rome, having to deal with a papal schism, resulting in no one being left in charge of the city and thus another restoration of the Roman Republic.
In 1167 Rome made war on the neighboring city of Tusculum, a long time rival of Rome who had supported the Pope and became a papal capital after the foundation of the republic. The Count of Tusculum appealed for help to the Holy Roman Empire, and Frederick I sent a small army of 1600 men. The Romans had an army of 10,000 made up of peasant militia who were poorly armed and poorly trained. While heavily outnumbered the Imperial army consisted of well armed and trained knights and professional soldiers. The Imperial army easily defeated the Romans at the Battle of Monte Porizio on May 29th, 1167, a battle which would later be called, "the Cannae of the Middle Ages". The Imperial army would continue to march on Rome, but by a stroke of luck for the Romans would be struck with the plague and forced to turn back. The Romans got their revenge against Tusculum in 1183 when they conquered and burned the city to the ground Carthage style.
The beginning of the end of the republic came in 1188 when Pope Clement III made a power sharing deal with the senate in which the people would elect senators but the Pope would have to approve the senators. The senate agreed to this in order to secure the protection of the Pope as the Holy Roman Empire was still a threat. Over the coming decades popes would reduce the number of senators until by the early 13th century, there was just one. Soon that single senate post was directly chosen by the Pope, and eventually it became a hereditary position. Before you knew it, French and Spanish nobles were becoming Roman senators and Roman senators ruled as autocrats at the behest of the Pope. By the end of the 13th century, the Roman Republic was dead.

The History of Astrology: A Journey Through Time and Thought
Astrology, the study of the positions and movements of celestial bodies and their purported influence on human affairs, has been a fixture in human culture for millennia. Its evolution reflects a complex interplay between science, philosophy, and spirituality, showcasing how societies have sought to understand their place in the cosmos. This essay explores the historical development of astrology, from its ancient origins to its contemporary forms.
Tumblr media
Ancient Beginnings: Mesopotamia and Egypt
The roots of astrology can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia, around the 3rd millennium BCE. The Babylonians, who were among the first to develop systematic astronomical observations, used these observations to create a form of astrology that combined celestial phenomena with predictions about earthly events. This early astrology was primarily concerned with omens and was heavily intertwined with the religious and political life of the time.
By the 2nd millennium BCE, Egyptian astrology had begun to emerge, blending Mesopotamian influences with local beliefs. The Egyptians, known for their advanced knowledge of astronomy and their intricate pantheon of gods, integrated astrological concepts into their religious and daily practices. They used astrology to forecast events and guide decisions, often linking the movements of the stars to the will of their gods.
Hellenistic Synthesis: The Birth of Horoscopic Astrology
The Hellenistic period (circa 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE) marked a significant transformation in astrology. With the expansion of the Greek empire and the subsequent mingling of Greek, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian cultures, a more sophisticated form of astrology emerged. This period saw the development of horoscopic astrology, which focused on creating individual birth charts based on the exact positions of celestial bodies at the time of a person's birth.
One of the key figures in this development was Claudius Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer and astrologer whose work, the Tetrabiblos, became a foundational text for Western astrology. Ptolemy’s system sought to systematize astrological knowledge and establish it as a coherent discipline. His work remained influential throughout the medieval period and beyond, laying the groundwork for modern astrological practices.
Medieval and Renaissance Astrology: Integration and Innovation
During the medieval period, astrology continued to thrive in both the Islamic world and Europe. Islamic scholars preserved and expanded upon Greek and Roman astrological knowledge, integrating it with their own astronomical observations and philosophical ideas. Figures like Abu Ma'shar al-Balkhi and Al-Kindi made significant contributions, blending astrological theory with a more refined understanding of the cosmos.
In Europe, astrology gained prominence as part of the broader scholarly tradition. Medieval scholars, including prominent figures like Thomas Aquinas, debated the role of astrology within a Christian framework. Despite some resistance from the Church, astrology remained a respected academic discipline and was often used in conjunction with medicine, politics, and other fields.
The Renaissance period (14th to 17th centuries) saw a revival of interest in astrology, driven by a renewed fascination with classical texts and an emphasis on the relationship between the macrocosm and the microcosm. Astrologers like Johannes Kepler, who is also known for his contributions to celestial mechanics, attempted to reconcile astrology with emerging scientific principles, though his work ultimately leaned more towards astronomy.
Modern Perspectives: From Science to Personal Insight
The Enlightenment and subsequent scientific revolutions brought a shift in attitudes towards astrology. With the rise of empirical science and skepticism towards unverified claims, astrology began to lose its status as a scientific discipline. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw astrology increasingly marginalized by the scientific community, with many viewing it as a pseudoscience.
However, astrology did not disappear. Instead, it underwent a transformation, adapting to modern sensibilities and becoming a popular cultural phenomenon. The 20th century witnessed the rise of psychological astrology, which emphasized the role of astrology in personal growth and self-understanding. Figures like Carl Jung incorporated astrological concepts into their psychological theories, reflecting a broader interest in integrating astrology with modern ideas about the self and consciousness.
Today, astrology occupies a diverse space within contemporary culture. While it is not recognized as a scientific discipline, it remains a popular and influential practice, with many people finding value in its symbolic and interpretive frameworks. Modern astrologers often focus on personal horoscopes and guidance, drawing on ancient traditions while adapting to contemporary concerns and contexts.
Conclusion: A Legacy of Meaning and Reflection
The history of astrology is a testament to humanity's enduring quest to understand the cosmos and our place within it. From its origins in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt to its modern incarnations, astrology has evolved alongside human thought, reflecting our shifting attitudes towards knowledge, spirituality, and the universe. While its scientific validity remains debated, astrology continues to offer a rich tapestry of symbolism and insight, underscoring the timeless human desire to seek meaning in the stars.

okay bad writing and fucked up story aside, i want to see it all from five's perspective. he's lonely, living in apocalypse for years with a manequin, the only love interest he had, he stuck in those ridiculuos timeline and a never ending job to save the world, AND ALSO his family are a total disaster.
i agree, the five lila thing is so fucked up i am screaming myself to die when i see this. but i see five too. i can't help, but feel pity for both of them. being trapped in the subway with each other. one wana take a break from his normal daily life and one just really lonely and need therapist.
i cannot say that they are 'right person in the wrong time' neither 'wrong person in the right time.' they are wrong person in the wrong time. and it sucks, because they know it. in any other universe, they are never meant to be with each other. ever. this is just a situationship. they fall in love because they only have each other and no one else. they grow affection towards each other and think it was love.
BUT NO IT WASN'T. WE ALL KNOW AND UNDERSTAND THAT. love can be platonic, love can be like a family. but five doesn't understand that because he in the middle of a desperation. he can't find a way back home and i believe he already choose to give up that moment when he suggest to live in a green house. he has no remorse because he thought he will get back and thus only have lila and only lila forever. like he always for the past seven years.
he never truly love someone so he get a little lost in between.
AND I GET IT, i am also angry with this plotline and i wish that it could be replace by LITERALLY any other people. but the season is out there and we can't do nothing to change it for the better. it's canon you know. i want to make sense the story even tho it's hard for me to accept this 😩
i love five and seeing him with other person makes me happy. BUT NOT LIKE THIS OH C'MON MAN. they really complicated everything. why on earth when they saw the whole show, they thought in their right mind like "oh yeah the viewers gonna love this, uhhh the drama"
"do you love him?" from diego is my roman empire. i cannot stress that line enough and how lila never answer it.

The Achaemenid/First Persian Empire is kind of wild. At the time of its greatest conquests it was the largest empire the world had ever seen, by a significant amount. Like any good empire it's a triumph of logistics, of course, but what's unusual is the character of the logistics in question. The kinds of empire we're used to are generally either basically maritime (Roman, Spanish, British, American) or basically horselord (Xiongnu, Parthian, Mongol, American) or Chinese (special case, the general tendency for there to exist a Chinese Empire is impressive in its own right but relatively familiar).
The Achaemenid Empire touched a lot of seas and bodies of water (Indus, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Tigris and Euphrates, Red Sea, Nile, Mediterranean, Aegean and Bosporus, Black Sea, Caspian Sea) and certainly these would have been used to facilitate logistics to some degree (Persian invasions of Greece relied on naval support, for example), but it certainly seems like the fundamental lifeline of their state was their extensive system of roads. The Romans talk a big game about their road system but ultimately the major logistical corridors of the Roman state were maritime and riverine. The Inca Empire was similarly road-based, likewise a hilly/mountainous region, and is also extremely cool, but didn't last nearly as long and was much smaller.
Herodotus says: "There is nothing mortal that is faster than the system that the Persians have devised for sending messages. Apparently, they have horses and men posted at intervals along the route, the same number in total as the overall length in days of the journey, with a fresh horse and rider for every day of travel. Whatever the conditions—it may be snowing, raining, blazing hot, or dark—they never fail to complete their assigned journey in the fastest possible time. The first man passes his instructions on to the second, the second to the third, and so on." A different translation of a section of this passage is famously associated with the US postal service.
Herodotus may be wrong in the details because the actual intervals between adjacent waystations seem to have been on the order of 16-26km, a distance a rider could reach in an hour (and perhaps most relevantly, a pedestrian or army might reach in a day), and as such it's certainly plausible horses were changed more than daily, as is attested in later relay postal networks, but it's easily possible he was right about their incredible speed. A perhaps somewhat generous estimated speed of government messages along this route is ~230km/day, by analogy of the pirradazish to the Pony Express and barid systems. This would make them faster than Roman communications, though certainly we have to recognize that maritime transport is ultimately faster and more convenient for trade in bulk goods and food. All figures taken from H.P. Colburn, "Connectivity and Communication in the Achaemenid Empire" Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient 56 (2013).
That's so cool! It's several hundred BCE and they have a complex permanent relay system with stations every couple dozen km, on a system of roads running throughout an empire thousands of km from center to edge. Just for one road, like the Sardis-Susa section that the Greeks usually talk about, that's over a hundred stations, each with a stock of supplies, backup mounts and riders, accommodations, anything else they might need, and Sardis-Susa was just one possible road stretch among many. That's incredible! I wish we knew what the people who made it and ran it thought. What was the life of a gas station attendant waystation operator in the reign of Artaxerxes I like?
It's kind of tragic that the Achaemenid Empire has been marginalized historiographically for so long. Generally it was treated as significant for its invasions and meddling in Greece, for ending the Babylonian captivity, or for providing a ready-made empire for Alexander to take over. It's not nothing, other places and time periods end up with much less of an imprint on our contemporary understanding of the past. We know a lot of cool stuff. But I wish we had more reflections on Persia from within. Most of what we seem to have is reports from Greeks, fragmentary letters and steles, and precious few excavation sites.

ash's september 2024 reading round up
find all the books and fics i read (or didn't read...) this month under the cut with a link to the synopsis and my reviews/ratings attached :)
this is just for fun! i'm not a professional, i just like to read <3
booklist:
Summer Reading by Jenn McKinlay(18+!)
• review: this was a solid read. nothing incredible, but definitely better than some of the other crap i've read this year lol. i enjoyed the dynamic between the fmc - a dyslexic chef named sam - and the mmc - a librarian named ben - and the interesting relationship between someone who hates to read and someone who's life revolves around books. honestly i was really interested to see how this played out between the two of them, but like one week into them fooling around he begins to read a book aloud to her and the conflict is magically solved. sam just loves audiobooks now and i wish the author had done more with that. both sam and ben have goals they're striving to reach and i love that ben is able to see his through to the end, but the reader is kind of left wondering about sam's and i would have loved for that threat to have been tied up, but overall this was a cute read. my only real issue with this story was the quality of writing. there were some parts that were super cringe and were clearly written by a millennial emulating the 'how do you do fellow kids' meme that i could've gone without... anyway. i really enjoyed the relationship exploration between sam and her budding teenager brother. after not being in each others lives for a bit, i thought their bonding over the summer was adorable :) would've loved to read a book just about them tbh. neither of the main characters were the kinds of characters to write home about, but overall i did enjoy the progression of their relationship. just kind of a middle-ground novel.
• rating: 3/5 seasons of the bear that taught me all i know about cooking
fic list:
assorted works of @ceruleanmusings <3

oh LORD such incredible updates to this sweet story. these chapters always pack such a punch! i expect nothing less from kames fan #1... im obsessed with the continued relationship between katie and kendall in pt 4. btrtv lacks so heavy on their sibling-ness so i always love seeing it expanded on in fic! and JAMES AND KENDALL GOING OFFICIAL AOAJFOBOBGA i had knots in my stomach! you've also so clearly set up stakes and kendall's future fears it's so genuine and just real it hits so hard. pt 5 with brooke had me almost throwing my phone at the wall if im being honest. the way she spoke to kendall was bonechilling and i'm nervous yet excited for their future together <3 never stop kamesing the world needs it so so sos sooo bad !!!
5. assorted works of @naquey / @ithinkyouhealedmyheart
ghostwriter chapter 1
ghostwriter chapter 2
hi <3 welcome to the reading round up! i love your story sm i'm so grateful to be here for the very beginning of kenonnie and their sweet relationship. ronnie is such a cool character! there is so much depth and dimension to them and i love that every single chapter we learn something new about her!! from her relationship with addy and callie (who i also ADORE and can't wait to learn more about) to his struggles with his father's health... god... the amount of thought you put in is clear and i'm just astounded! the second chapter was also super cool too; i love how you took existing characters and tweaked their relationship so we could learn more about how you view the two of them. i'd never thought to write something with just kelly and rebecca - it's so inventive, just like the (spoliers lol) other chapters you've published since <3 tysm for sharing your writing with us, i'm so excited to see ronnie's journey progress!!!

hULLO dropping by for daily tobio!nation thoughts PHEW consider chinese period drama kageyama, where he's the 2nd son to the emperor, and a genius war tactician, and yes, even though he's got an older brother, everyone knows that the emperor's got his sights set on tobio to be his next in line -- and then there's you, the only daughter to a beloved warlord, who's father raised you like a son, taught you how to read, raise you on politics and war strategems and always told you that woman should know how to fight just as well as a man. so you grow up with tobio, never thinking twice about sparring with him, about getting the hems of your silks dirty when you both sneak off to the river to catch frogs, but you're older now, and the emperor is pressuring tobio to look for a wife, and a good, demure one who knows the 4 great arts -- 琴棋书画 -- and it's not till he gets frustrated with the parade of pretty, bejeweled princesses before him that he complains to you and blurts out "what if i marry you instead?"
I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS. i live and thrive on historical cdramas so, my bread and butter! i have many thoughts floating around right now UGHHH why did you do this to me!! combining two of my roman empires...
first consider the idea of the imperial harem 后宫 there's something so poetic in the doomed love that blooms between someone who is fated to be the emperor and his consort, the heartbreak that slowly sets in soul crushingly because no matter how much you love him, he is the 天子 , the emperor, and he will never be yours alone, historically speaking of course. not to mention that even if he does fall in love with you, it is so easy for a man to just fall for another woman, especially a man with such resources at his disposal as an emperor, the ruler of kingdoms. (again, historically speaking) for context for other people, in ancient china, emperors normally have around 3000 concubines, even though only one holds the title of his official wife 正妻, the queen. out of around 600 emperors and kings in chinese history, only ONE is monogamous.
i am obsessed with this au ughhhhhh it has crossed my thoughts before, but i wasn't sure if people would be interested in reading a fic set in ancient china <//3
BACK TO YOUR POINT. OH MY GOD SECOND PRINCE TOBIO WHO IS SMART AND AN AMAZING WAR TACTICIAN (once again, i LOVE men who are smart smart UGHHGHGHGHGHGHG) something about intellect is just *on my knees* (uhm, is tooru his elder brother *cough, CHOKE)
now to entertain your thoughts. there's so many ways this could go. like PPHEW should we go historically common drama where you get married to him, learning the 'proper' ways of a wife but he ends up having other consorts down the line because men be men and heartbreAK, understanding that you may be his, but he will never be yours?
TWO, OOOOH with a modern twist, getting into this arrangement with him and thinking it is just a marriage of convenience (once again, mutual PINING, i will DIE ON THIS HILL) and learning to be fine with the way things are (he just wants a wife in name because he wants to get his father off his back about it, thinking that you do not feel the way he does either, OR he realizes his own feelings AFTER the marriage (OH HOW I LOVE HISTORICAL DRAMA PLOTLINES ), never touches you in the way he should as a husband on your wedding night 洞房 because he doesn't wish to tarnish your purity in the case that you find someone you wish to remarry somewhere down the line, he can assure your future husband that your virtue is intact. SLOW BURN ENSUES BETWEEN TWO IDIOTS BLAH BLAH the only monogamous emperor in history kageyama tobio????
fuck i want to write this now, what have you done rain!!

ok but what would Kevin's reaction be to the whole 'Roman empire' trend as an avid lover of history and the Roman empire, and would he have a Roman empire that isn't actually the Roman empire? (Or exy)
Nicky or Dan or one of the upperclassmen would see the trend and go around asking all of the other Foxes and ask “how often do you think about the Roman Empire” and they’re mostly just confused and don’t take it too seriously but then they get to Kevin
And he just sighs and genuinely takes a second to think about it before seriously answering
“Two to three times a day”
He’s just so genuine in the answer because my boy is not active on social media and would not know it’s a trend, at least early on he wouldn’t. So he thought they were just genuinely asking
The video gets posted on the Foxes social media and all of the disbelieving comments finally clue Kevin into the trend but he also stands firm and refuses to be embarrassed
Que “Daily Facts about the Roman Empire featuring Kevin Day” becoming a series across all of the Foxes social media for a few weeks
When someone asks him what his Roman Empire is he does genuinely answer that but he also probably says tea and Hamilton

GUYS ⚠️CC2/HOSAB SPOILERS⚠️
I need to talk about the SJM live from tonight. She recanted her earlier statement saying that ACOTAR and CC could be read as stand alone series. I have a lot of thoughts on this but the major one that is my Roman Empire is Rhys and Feyre’s “death pact.”
The verbiage of the bargain isn’t that they’ll die together, it’s that when they go to “that place,” they’ll go together. Like I’m just so convinced that they’ll travel to Hel together with Bryce in CC3 which will fulfill the bargain.
Idk if this is already established but I haven’t seen anything about it and I think about it daily. I NEED to discuss
(also will we get any answers about Elriel vs Elucien bc I am so tired of the tension)
UPDATE w/ spoilers:
DAMN I was off. My new guess is that they’ll use Truth-Teller to cleave the deal or something lol

HallowReads Celebration
I'm not much of a graphic maker and I'm not great at making playlists for other people, so I decided to contribute to this lovely celebration in the way I usually celebrate fic writers in this fandom: Recs!
And listen, I know I have uhhh quite a few mutuals here. I'm not trying to leave anyone out. I love you all very much. I'm only making one of these though and there's only 4 questions lol.
My favourite fanfic I read this year
Lavender by @justagalwhowrites Description: An age-gap grumpy/sunshine friends-to-lovers (and eventually friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers) fanfic that starts pre-outbreak. Series is now complete and spans from Spring, 2000, through Fall, 2029, in the HBO timeline. My thoughts: It's hard to pick a favorite fic. I have read a little over 500 fics since April of this year. But this one has stuck with me so hard. I keep coming back to it over and over. It is beautifully written, heart wrenching, absolutely wonderful. The no outbreak AU will heal you from the trauma of reading the original version, but listen... it's worth it. The characters, the plot, the imagery, everything is so incredible. If you haven't read this... what are you doing?
A beloved fanfic with my comfort character
Celestial Navigation by @write-and-buried Description: dumped and drowning in a summer storm, you duck inside a coffee shop to hide from your broken heart. Covered in plants and hand drawn images over exposed brick, it seems like a slice of heaven. The owner brings you a blueberry muffin and a promise; you'll fall in love with him before the new year. My thoughts: Dieter is my comfort character, 100%. I love him with all my heart. This fic... It takes everything I love about the character of Dieter, puts him into an eccentric millionaire coffee shop AU, mixes in a little bit of that supernatural witchy vibe I love... and it stole my heart. I read this very very early on in my PPCU days and I have since read it 3 times. And I really don't do rereads often. This fic is absolutely beautiful. It's my fucking Roman Empire, man. I think about it at least daily.
A fanfic I wish more people knew about
Psychomanteum by @whatsnewalycat Description: You've recently taken on the customer-facing responsibilities of the small-scale cannabis bakery you and your late husband ran out of your apartment, which introduces you to occasional customer, Dieter Bravo. A friendship is sparked when you realize you have something in common: you've both died. What Dieter doesn't tell you about his near-death experience, though, is that it foretold his life with you. My thoughts: This is one of those fics you think would have 1000 notes and then you look and it has less than 200 on each chapter. This fic is criminally underrated. Psychomanteum is one of the main reasons I even started writing fanfic. I hadn't considered how deeply moving and beautiful a fic could be until I read this. I think I was originally drawn in by the spooky vibes and I was hooked immediately by the world building, the characters, the exploration of grief and trauma. I cannot sing this fic or aly's praises enough. Everyone should read this.
A fanfic with my favourite trope/AU
Be-All and Endor by @djarins-cyare Description: Languishing in a dull and lonely existence on the forest moon of Endor after travelling there to help salvage Death Star wreckage, a nearly fatal encounter with a mysterious bounty hunter out in the forest heralds an opportunity to utilise long-forgotten skills and develop something more profound than you ever thought possible. My thoughts: So my favorite trope is slow burn. This is... an exceptional slow burn. The tension is there pretty much right from the beginning, but it's like 25 whole chapters before the smut happens I think? Don't quote me on that but it's like nearly halfway in to a fic that is very, very long. On to why this is my favorite slowburn ever: The worldbuilding is beautiful. The characterization of Din is one of the best I've literally ever seen. Reader is incredible. Every choice made by the author is so smart and well-researched and planned out. The plot is fantastic, the characters are amazing, the imagery, the tension, the character development. If you love Din, you have to read this. It is beautiful.
A fanfic with my favourite trope/AU Part 2
I simply can't resist a M/M/F sex pollen fic
Of Gorgons and Gardens by @concussed-to-pieces
Description: a Death Watch-raised Mando that takes the Creed incredibly seriously and an Ezra that's well armed -- sex pollen in the form of a weird plant
My thoughts: I am a SLUT for sex pollen fics, so obviously that was excellent. I also love how it was like "oh the plant makes men want to fuck women" but hinted that neither of them would be particularly upset about fucking each other either. This fic is almost absurdly smutty (but also kinda sweet) in part one, and then part two was so sweet. Like yeah yeah horrible harrowing near death experience yada yada... the STUBBLE SCENE??? The PAIN KINK?? the TOUCHING?? I just about died. And then in part three we get my top all time kink PLUS Din and Ezra and Reader just being so sweet it hurts a little. I am feral for these boys UGH. If you like MMF, read all three parts. If you just like poor pining Din and some insane sex pollen that's a little more MFM than MMF, just read part one. Either way... this fic is insanely good man.
-------
I could and have recced so many fics. It was very difficult for me for to choose just these five, when the spreadsheet is well over 500 fics now. Check out my Fic Rec Masterlist for a comprehensive list of my recommendations.
