Let's get one thing straight.
I fall asleep thinking about Silence of the Lambs.
And the first thing I think of when waking up the next morning is Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling.
I don't know when it happened or how I crossed that line of sanity, but one half of my brain seems to have been taken over by a demon. I don't care. I'm living my best life.

I waited for so many years,
the way one waits for a love to return
Or a child to be born,
I waited for a parent to come home.
____________________
They say time is money,
For that little girl time was neither money nor a healer
Time, like all things, was a vacuum
It ate away every ounce of love and warmth,
And made the little girl bereft of all beauty
Most of all,
Time had robbed her of a mother.
__________________________
My mother was the glass that I held and broke,
She was a careful weave that held together the fabric of her family.
Now we look at the ruins of the disgruntled woman,
A flower that the world plucked and discarded,
I ask if she will ever come home,
An voice echoes back " where is her home?"
_________________________
I am almost 22 but there is no sign of my mother,
I want to cry out "my mother is missing ! Have you seen her ?"  to every person I see on the street,
But ofcourse they would laugh incredulously.
______________________
At home the woman I see is a shell of a human being,
A shell that glares at me all day long, lifeless.
She never does motherly things
Like place her hand over my head nor does she give me her shoulder to cry on, or  crack unfunny jokes.
She simply stares. Cold and lifeless.
__________________
My dear mother
A cracked visage that looks back at me in the mirror,
Is the disease and the remedy of my poor little heart,
And the ache and longing of 22 years.
____________________
The little girl sobbed endlessly,
And now the 22 year old woman struggles to let out a single tear.
The numbness of 22 years gives birth to an unfortunate monster.
A monster that hates her mother.
_______________________
A patience of 22 years -a malady of hope,
The girl continues to wait fully knowing that the love and warmth, and hugs and laughter and joy
Will never be hers.
_____________________
For now and for ever,
She is destined for heartache.
Yet,
in agony her sick heart cries :
"Don't lose hope
After all,
time heals all wounds, doesn't it?"
-A.

Happy National Black Cat Day! 🐈‍⬛
This occasion brings together cat lovers from all over to express their love and admiration for these enigmatic feline friends. 🖤 These beautiful black cats have long been the subject of myths and superstitions, but today we aim to debunk those misconceptions and celebrate them for the unique and lovable companions they are.
Throughout history, black cats have been associated with various cultural beliefs. In ancient Egypt, they were revered and seen as symbols of good luck, often associated with the goddess Bastet, who represented home, fertility, and childbirth. However, in medieval Europe, black cats were linked to superstitions and often feared, with many believing they were witches' familiars. These superstitions led to the persecution and even mass killings of black cats during the witch hunt era. Fortunately, society has come a long way, and black cats are now cherished as pets in many households.
National Black Cat Day serves as a reminder that these animals, like any other, deserve love, care, and respect. It's an opportunity for cat enthusiasts to show their affection for these elegant and mysterious felines and to dispel any lingering prejudices against them. Whether you already have a black cat as a beloved companion or are considering adopting one, today is the day to celebrate and share the love.
For more black cat content, take a look at JSTOR Daily's "Nine Black Cat Stickers."

Quote
I saw. I know I saw because I didn’t give my meaning to what I saw. I know I saw — because I don’t understand. I know I saw — because there’s no point to what I saw. Listen, I’m going to have to speak because I don’t know what to do with having lived. Even worse: I don’t want what I saw. What I saw smashes my daily life.

Hi friends! Inspired by @librarycards I wanted to make a post celebrating Women in Translation Month! Anglophone readers generally pay embarrassingly little attention to works in other languages, and that's even more true when it comes to literature by women, so I will jump at any chance to promote my faves 🥰 Here are some recs from 9 different languages! Also, I wrote this on my phone, so apologies for any typos or errors!
1. Trieste by Daša Drndić, trans. Ellen Elias-Bursać (Croatian): An all-time favorite. Much of Drndić's work interrogates the legacy of atrocities in Europe, particularly eastern Europe. Trieste is a haunting contemplative novel centered on an elderly Italian Jewish woman whose family converted to Catholicism during the Mussolini era and were complicit in the fascist violence surrounding them in order to protect themselves.
2. Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung, trans. Anton Hur (Korean): A collection of short stories that are difficult to classify by genre–speculative fiction in the broadest sense. The first story is about a monster in a woman's toilet, which sounds impossible to pull off in a serious, thought-provoking manner, but Chung does so easily—these are the kind of stories that are hard to explain the brilliance of secondhand.
3. Sweet Days of Discipline by Fleur Jaeggy, trans. Tim Parks (Italian; Jaeggy is Swiss): Another all time favorite! The cold, sterile homoerotic girls' boarding school novella of your dreams.
4. Toddler-Hunting and Other Stories by Taeko Kono, trans. Lucy North (Japanese): I think I read this in one sitting. Incredibly unsettling—these stories will stay with you. They often focus on the unspoken psychosexual fantasies underscoring mundane daily life.
5. The Complete Stories by Clarice Lispector, trans. Katrina Dodson (Brazilian Portuguese): I think Lispector is the best known writer here, so she might not need much of an introduction. But what a legend! And this collection is so diverse—it's fascinating to see the evolution of Lispector's work.
6. Our Lady of the Nile by Scholastique Mukasonga, trans. Melanie L. Mauthner (French; Mukasonga is Rwandan): Give her the Nobel! Mukasonga's books, at least the ones available in English, are generally quite short but so impactful. Our Lady of the Nile is a collection of interrelated short stories set at a Catholic girls' boarding school in Rwanda in the years before the Rwandan genocide. These stories are fascinating on many levels, but perhaps the most haunting element is seeing how ethnic hatred intensifies over time—none of these girls would consider themselves particularly hateful or prejudiced, but they easily justify atrocities in the end.
7. Extracting the Stone of Madness: Poems 1962-1972 by Alejandra Pizarnik, trans. Yvette Siegert (Spanish; Pizarnik was Argentinian): Does anyone remember when my url was @/pizarnikpdf... probably not but worth mentioning to emphasize how much I love her <3 Reading Pizarnik is so revelatory for me; she articulates things I didn't even realize I felt until I read her words.
8. Flight and Metamorphosis: Poems by Nelly Sachs, trans. Joshua Weiner (German): Sachs actually won the Nobel in the 1960s, so it's surprising that she's not better known in the Anglosphere. Her poems are cryptic and surreal, yet deeply evocative. Worth mentioning that this volume is bilingual, so you can read the original German too if you're interested.
9. Frontier by Can Xue, trans. Karen Gernant and Chen Zeping (Chinese): Can Xue is another difficult-to-classify writer in terms of genre. Her short stories are often very abstract and can be puzzling at first. I think Frontier is a great place to start with her because these stories are interconnected, which makes them a bit more accessible.

🌸 answer me, my prince!
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
a suave prince with all he could ever ask for. a starry-eyed editor who longed for more. two unexpected penpals from vastly different worlds.
they were undoubtedly fated to meet, but never face-to-face.
❥ 735 words ❥ tags: au, fluff, slightly angsty if you blink, very very self-indulgent, no beta we die like chads, mentions of cove, qiu, and my ol2 mc! ❥ notes: the hyperfixation was so strong i emerged from inactivity. i finished the comic this fic shares a title with last weekend and refused to move on,,, made for #baxtermcweek (day 4 prompt: au), hosted by @minthe-drawings
▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀
He doesn’t realize how long he’s repeatedly been opening and closing the empty book chest until he slams it shut a little too loud, snapping him out of his reverie. His eyes dart left and right and his ears stay alert in case he accidentally woke anyone up.
He hears nothing, so hopefully the coast is clear. He opens the book chest again, and the letter he’s waited all night for sits perfectly inside, having appeared out of thin air.
He needs not wait to carefully examine the envelope or admire its design (far more cleaner-cut and colorful than what he's received from others over the years) as he immediately gets to reading.
Prince Baxter Alexander.
You’re getting better at pressuring me to reply to you faster and faster. It scares me a little.
Regarding your story, I think what you did for their sake was quite admirable. I can’t even imagine going as far as to pretend to be Cove’s fiancée for his protection, let alone for 5 years! But back to you. Since you didn’t end up falling in love with each other, does this mean Lady Ysabel’s lover is much more good-looking than you are? Would you mind getting a portrait of the Laird Qiu for your friend?
Silly Iri.
(You’ve never asked me for my portrait. You wound me. Nonetheless, I forgive you.)
You of all people should be able to know that not every long-standing friendship necessarily has the potential to end in romance.
Like us?
We are a bit of a special case because I do not think of Ysabel every day.
(Oh, what am I going to do with you?)
Ever the type to give people the answers they want to hear now, are you? You’re surrounded by far more impressive people in your daily life, people you can actually talk to and see.  I highly doubt that you think of me every day.
(PS It’s way past midnight, so I should probably get ready for bed if I don’t want to be late for work. Sleep well, my prince.)
Irina Clarice, my sick twisted friend.
What? Is laying my entire self bare to you, heart and soul, in the written word last night not enough for you? After all the times I’ve spent my evenings waiting for your letters?
I specifically chose this time of year to get away from my parents under the guise of avoiding the heat and helping the monks at the scriptorium. Summer, after all, is the perfect time to do something crazy, pursue a new beauty, to start anew. I confess to you that I imagined nightly sneak-outs to rendezvous with someone who’s caught my eye, but all this time, I’ve been holed up in the scriptorium’s writing room, idly and politely waiting by the book chest on my desk in anticipation to see if you have replied to what I’ve written about my latest misadventures. Before I knew it, I’d already spent the entirety of my summer getting to know you. Now I do know you, and there is no one else like you anywhere else in the world.
Tragically, we shall never have the chance to meet, so I don’t think whatever it is I’m feeling in my chest can be called love. My fate is sealed.
Still, whenever the sight of someone so beautiful catches my eye, thoughts of you fill my head, and I become almost upset, complaining that no matter who I meet, they will never be anything like my Iri. So, my dear friend, do not tell me that I do not think of you every day.
I do not recall you mentioning having felt this way towards your childhood companions, nor your devilishly handsome Xander from the antique shop,  so I shall regrettably but with dignity take this as a victory.
On a lonely night on the month of heat’s end, Your Baxter Alexander.
(PS Clarence and I are departing tomorrow at dawn for Golden Grove to attend Qiu’s wedding, just in time for the beginning of fall. Bringing the book chest with me would be far too bothersome for such a short trip. I expect to be away for about three to four days.
Even so, worry not your pretty little head and get a good night’s rest without my letters to bother you, Iri. I hope you do not miss me too much.)

Tagged by @lambilegs aka THE Lee Harker account, whose work is keeping me going these days fr
Last song: The Heavy Heavy, "Man of the Hills" (truly this whole album, cover to cover, is top tier)
Favourite colour: Mustard yellow. What can I say? I love a pop of color.
Currently watching: The Owl House. If you haven't seen it, please watch it. It's adorable. It's witchy. It's gay. It's fall vibes. I rewatch it every year in September/October.
Last movie: Silence of the Lambs. Literally it is a problem. I have watched it..... upwards of 10 times in the last week. I just have it on in the background atp. This happens once a year when the weather gets a lil crisp lol.
Sweet/Savoury/Spicy: Probably savory. There's this dim sum place where I live and they have the best soup dumplings I've ever had. I think about ordering there daily and so how manage not to some days.
Current Obsessions: Lee Harker (not necessarily Longlegs as a film; Dale Kobble, who? I'm here for Lee lol), jalapeño cream cheese, Silence of the Lambs (same thing, I'm for Clarice and Clarice only, though Hannibal is a top tier villain), Dim Sum Garden's soup dumplings, snuggling my cats, not wearing a bra
Last thing I googled: "how did hannibal lecter do his art if he's not allowed to have writing utensils"
