I’m adapting a story where a key plot point is that it’s Valentine’s Day, but I was going to make one of my characters Muslim. Is it Haraam to give someone you love a Valentine? On one hand, it’s technically a Pagan/Christian holiday, so participating is probably forbidden. On the other hand (not to norm. Christianity) the modern holiday is basically just a gift-giving day without the same religious connotations of, say, Christmas. Since it’s a plot point, should I just not have Muslim protags?
Can my Muslim character celebrate Valentine’s day?
Hi! You’ve guessed it right, since it’s origins are not Islamic, the default is that any holiday outside of this frame is forbidden for us to celebrate and cherish. This being said, yes, partaking in Valentine’s Day, even if people nowadays don’t associate it with its original meaning, is still forbidden.
On the other, whether you should remove or not your Muslim character is up to you. Your character does not necessarily need to partake in Valentine’s Day to be present; they can just be there, let it be known that they are not participating and that’s it. I’m sure they may have other things to do. If your plot point requires the Valentines Day part, then do what is best for your plot. Muslims, as many others, don’t belong to each and every story out there.

Batman/Bruce Wayne from the HISHE (How it Should Have Ended) Super Cafe is autistic; he often takes things literally, wears his costume as a pressure stim, and says “because i’m BATMAN” as vocal stimming, echolalia, or social scripting!

Percy Jackson Characters
Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson and the Olympians is autistic! (She and Hermione are pretty alike.) She has special interests in Greek Mythology and architecture, and has a plan for everything (and gets very upset when she’s told that she’s in a situation where plans won’t work. When she joined up with Thalia and Luke, Thalia (who’s also autistic) let her stim with her jewelry. Thalia also stims tactilely with the spikes on her leather jacket.
Nico DiAngelo, Leo Valdez, and Percy Jackson are also autistic; Nico stims with the skull ring on his finger and Percy by fiddling with pen!Riptide. Leo has a special interest in machinery and cars and stims with little gears or scrap metal he carries around with him, plus he regulates his temperature with his fire to prevent sensory overload.
These are all the ones I can think of right now but there’ll probably be more soon!

Pippin (from the musical)
Pippin from the musical Pippin is an autistic, and also a trans man. His various special interests are the things he tries throughout the musical (art, politics, religion, etc.) . He bonds with Theo, who is also autistic, and knowing that Theo understands animals better than people, helps him care for the animals on Catherine’s farm.
