shouta has always been afraid of change. losing oboro only reinstated that fear, and so he bites back his feelings for hizashi and refrains from looking at and naming the warmth in his chest. he does the same for shinso, because he can't afford to single out one of his students despite knowing that he cares deeply for him, more so than anyone else in 1-A. he refuses change, swallows back potential threats to his somewhat stable situation, and it's safe but uncomfortable. but when summer break comes along, a time for the students to go home for a couple months, and shouta comes face to face with shinso, who has no place to go, he makes a split-second decision that incites the healing of wounds he's long since ignored, and the realization that he can't hide behind his walls forever.

or, shouta is scared to lose what little he's gained through his life, so much so that he doesn't realize how much more he could have if he showed a little bravery.
