Part One
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You looked up at the ceiling, the waxy moonlight creating towering shadows around the room. You’d had a nightmare. Faceless man chasing you, his elongated fingers wanting to rip into your flesh. Your heart was racing, you felt like the man could be anywhere.
You looked out of the makeshift bed Alfie had made you. It was very comfortable, a large wicker tote filled with cushions. He said that way he’d not accidentally crush you in his sleep. You peeked over the edge and looked at his large figure sprawled out, snoring loudly. You attempted to quietly crawl out of the basket, seeking his warmth. Hoping that he wouldn't wake up and tell you off.
He never minded when you woke him up in the night, something you were getting used to. You moved on top of him. Placing your head on his chest listening to his snores become even louder. He woke up and his hands cradled you.
“There are no faceless men ‘ere” He mumbled, his voice heavy with sleep. He patted your back in an attempt to comfort you. “Now crawl back into your basket.”
You nuzzled your face against his chest in protest.
“Come on, love. You know that nothing will hurt you in this house.” His hand rubbed your back and you felt your anxieties flutter away with the warmth of his touch. “Look at Cyril there by the door, he’d be losin’ his mind if he thought there was someone else in the room”
All of this was true, but your mind was hazy. He had a way of putting you at ease making you feel safe. His rough hand kept running up and down your spine.
“Go on little one.”
“Just a little longer?” You mumbled into his shirt. He let out a deep sigh. You tensed up at his disapproval, ready to go back to your basket. Rejection felt like cold water, you didn't know why something could feel so safe, and yet bother him so much. After you had settled into the space, he’d been increasing the distance between the two of you. You knew it was probably because he was a busy man and you’d not been a part of his plan. It was a lot to ask and you were being very rude. You would wait for him to stop rubbing your back before climbing into your basket.
_______________________________________________________________ Alfie POV
There must be something wrong with her. Dark thoughts swirled in his mind of what would bring her to be this hungry for affection. She was desperate to be touched by him at all times. Only by him, everyone else caused her a great deal of fright.
He knew that keeping space between them was respectable. He certainly never wanted to hug his father, let alone be held by him.
Did someone do something horrible to her, make her feel as if she had to win his protection? Looking down into her big eyes, there was a soft sense of adoration in her.
He didn’t want her to put him on a pedestal. He was just doing his best not to mess her up, surely the bare minimum all things considered.
But maybe little girls were different, or perhaps this was trauma.
“You can stay for a bit,” He said watching her face relax. Her breathing evened out and her fists loosened their hold on his shirt.
He thought about the way her face would fall when he would push her away. Putting her in the basket, or during the day. It suddenly dawned on him that maybe she had no way of knowing what was wrong with this situation. As an adult, he’d made many men suffer for their wrongful actions. Maybe she’d not experienced those evils.
“Why do you like being held so much eh?” He whispered softly.
“Feels nice.” She murmured words slightly slurred with exhaustion. “M’ always alone. People were mean but you're not mean. You just feel nice.” She said after a few moments.
Her world was separated into mean people and nice people. What about the very fast in-between that held all people? He looked down at her little face and before arguing or explaining he realized yet again that he was dealing with a two and half year old. The fact that she could tell the difference between nice and mean was already a big step when he considered what most other toddlers were like.
And he was nice. Nicer than his father had been to him, although she rarely ever gave him a reason to discipline her. He always made she was dressed well and her belly was full. She was respected and she behaved so well that people at temple were happy to see her when he brought her along.
Her sense of affection was just being held tightly.
She had no memories of her parents, her whole life was spent on her own. She remembered one Nun very fondly but when Alfie looked the woman up he found out that she had passed.
He held her the rest of the night, soothing her when she would whimper the sound causing his heart to break.
When she woke up she looked around, he caught her pretending to go back to sleep in hopes that they could stay like this for longer. He decided not to do anything until her stomach let out an impressive growl making Cyril raise his head off the floor in confusion.
“Sounds like it’s time for breakfast, love” He watched her let out a little yawn.
“Okay.” She said easily. He decided to just keep her there on his hip while he cooked breakfast and enjoyed all the questions she asked about his cooking.
After that he just let her hold on to him whenever she wanted. To his surprise, he noticed that eventually, and very slowly she would be okay walking next to him or running up to things and people she knew. She was still very clingy but he could see that she was starting to trust that even if she didn't have a death grip on his shirt he wasn’t going to leave her.
He stopped worrying about it once seeing her interact with Sarah. Just the same, she wanted to be held. If anything he felt a pang of jealousy assuming he’d been replaced. Only to see her be happiest when Sarah would read to her on the couch squished between the two adults.
It shouldn't be right. He didn't come about it the right way. But these moments gave off the unmistakable feeling of home and family. Sarah would look over her head to give him a look. As if -She was waiting for him.
That night when you’d come flying into the room he’d not liked it one bit. The room was a mess, completely obvious to any person with two eyes what they had been doing. They had both put on bed clothes after in case they needed to get up at some point, the only reason he considered letting you stay in the room at all. But Sarah was drowning in the giant cotton shirt he had lent her and the whole thing was not appropriate in the slightest. Anxiety built in his chest and he looked at you.
He waited for you to get upset. Sarah was in your spot, his arm still tucked under her head. Instead, you settled against the woman's chest. Her fingers holding your head as if such a position was the most normal thing in the world. Alfie had only seen art depicting such unconditional love between mothers and their children.
They looked like a painting.
He held the both of them closely, feeling his heart grow bigger trying to accept his new family. He proposed the next day, mentally angry with himself for wasting time. Potentially confusing the both of you, making everyone stressed about the uncertainty of his family (he was the only one stressed) A wrong he would make sure to right.
After Sarah and he had settled into a proper house. Both of them watched you become more outgoing. Embracing the ins and outs of childhood more recklessly than before. Soon you were old enough for school. He’d struggled with the concept all summer Sarah’s knowing eyes followed him closely. You would have to be alone, in the hands of other adults, and the concept was eating him alive. He should be within his rights to send you with Cyril.
The time came and you left the house in your little uniform. Making Sarah promise to wait in the parking lot in case you didn't like it. But you did.
While you were coming home with scraped knees that sent his blood pressure through the roof, yammering on about friend drama and lessons at school, the unthinkable happened.
Well, not unthinkable, but it still caught him off guard.
Sarah had come back later than usual, and gone right into the shower once home. Normally she would bother him in his study when she got home. After a while, he heard her move into their shared bedroom. Curled into a tight ball on her side he wondered if she was ill. Wordlessly he got in next to her and pulled her against his body.
He wanted to ask but somehow the silence felt necessary. They had been married for almost two years and she was always talking about something.
“Alfie.” She said in a soft voice. It was almost a defeated, a sound that made him feel like the earth was going to swallow both of them whole.
“Wot.” He answered already angry and whatever she was going to tell him. Getting ready to fling into action to fix whatever was weighing on her.
“I’m Pregnant.” She whispered and his heart stopped. He felt his heart race and his stomach twist at all the possibilities.
He tried to do what she always told him to do in these situations. He started to take deep breaths. Thoughts of all the things that could go wrong, all the things that were out of his control eating at his soul.
“Fucking hell - Two of them.” His vision was hazy. On one hand, he had never felt so happy, then on the other, there was crippling anxiety over the lack of control and fear of failure. He kept trying to breathe his way through.
She’d been told she wouldn’t be able to have kids, something that hadn't bothered him. Sometimes God has other plans.
She turned around in his arms to face him, His eyes landed on her face registering how much pain she was in. Hands clutched around her middle, tears in her eyes. Her skin was so pale.
“Fuck - are you sick? Do you need a pale?” He shot out of bed realizing he was being an idiot. Obviously, she needed things. “I'll get you a cloth, and some ice chips. A blanket.” He was rushing around and still, she looked so gutted.
After a bucket was placed at the bed and two glasses of water were on the bedside (one with ice and one room temperature, because what did babies prefer? He assumed it would be hot in there but still he wouldn't want cold water poured over him)
“Alfie I’m not sick” She kept saying, but still a cloth on her head should still make things better.
“Alfie stop.” He froze and looked down at his wife, her eyes started to tear up. “What are we going to do?”
“Now, Well. I erm - I figured you’d do the growing and I’d just help out around here type of thing. No real way to split it 50/50 when you think about it.”
“I'm being serious. You just about had a heart attack - I know this isn't what you wanted.” she was angry and him, that was very clear to him, but he had no idea why? Pregnant women were known to be angry though, weren't they?
“I most certainly did not almost have a heart attack.” He said stubbornly hoping that showing strength would make you feel more calm. It didn’t, her eyes flashed and suddenly he wished that there was a handbook for such situations.
“Alfie seriously, you didn't -”
“Plan for it - meaning I was caught off guard for a very small moment.” He interrupted. “But I’m very prepared - know exactly what to do” He gestured at all the water and cloths. “Nothing to worry about. I can provide you the things you need, alright.” He said firmly.
“Out of duty or love?” Your eyes narrowed.
“What kind of question is that?” How could she ask such a stupid question? His voice raised at her accusation which he realised was a mistake.
“I can tell you're angry!” She said with tears spilling over onto her cheeks.
“I am not angry.” He thought about arguing or just admitting the obvious. Seeing her this upset made him realize it was better to be honest and vulnerable. “I was for a moment, potentially, slightly scared.” He cleared his throat. “However I know exactly what to do, so I’m fine now.”
She started laughing softly and he felt like he could breathe again.
“What are you afraid of?”
“You getting hurt mostly. - Knowing what to do. When she showed up it was already a mystery how to protect something so small. When it comes out it's going to be even smaller. At least she could walk and talk.”
“I think we will manage,” She said after a long moment.
“I know we will,” Alfie said with a smile that made your spirits lift.
_________________________
Alfie was worried about how you would feel about the situation. Would you think that the time required to care for a small baby meant that they loved you less? What if you got the wrong idea, and felt replaced?
Thoughts of you growing up with an attitude problem then running away and living on the streets again made him want to throw up.
You were smart though. He would just explain it to you and make sure to spend extra time doing things you liked.
You cried when Sarah told you and he acted without thinking snatching you up into his arms.
“Still your house. Still your family.” He rubbed your back trying to calm you down. “If you even think about running away I swear-”
“I finally get to be a big sister.” She wiped her nose on his shirt and reached out for Sarah. “ I asked God so many times - I didn't think he could hear me.” You curled against Sarah while still using one hand to hold onto his shirt tightly. He moved closer holding both of them.
______________
In nine months' time, the mystery was officially solved. People, especially children like to be held. He watched as both his daughters grow, much too fast. You were always holding the little one. Then you were trying to make her crawl, then walk, teaching her bad words and laughing.
Adi and you formed your own alliance, thankfully both of you were happy enough so you rarely ever argued with him and Sarah. He was happy knowing that long after He and Sarah were gone, you would have each other to lean on.

While the moms are away
For @justrainandcoffee alfieverseray
Allie and Rose are her creations, Diane and Eva are mine
Cw: dad's playing dress up with their daughters, mentions of past cross dressing and slight mentions of couples sexual life
Tumblr media
He adores his children, his daughters especially, but they took great delight in pushing his limits.
Eva usually took her to her playdates or hosted them. After all, his wife was charming and interesting ... and female.
She could wear costume jewelry and make up and a cheap feather boa as pink as the rest of Diane’s room.
Tommy Shelby would lose his next election if anyone even heard of this.
But he is not alone in his torment. On the other side of the tiny French table in an equally fancy tiny stool sits Alfred Solomons wearing the pink derby hat Eva never even wore once and painted with Eva’s favorite red lipstick. You know that one that had a matron at a charity luncheon call a whorish shade of red.
“Allie, sweetheart, you missed a spot.” Tommy knows he’s playing with fire, but Solomons pointed out Tommy had ear piercings and now Eva’s hoops hung from his ears.
He once pretended to be a girl so Greta could sneak him into her dormitory when they were teenagers and her father sent her to a catholic private school. For several weeks the matrons in charge believed he was Thomasine Shelby, cousin of Ada Shelby visiting from Cork.
And now he is plotting his revenge while they wait for Eva and Rose to return from some ladies charity bazaar they organized for her reelection campaign.
Solomons only glares at him murderously but bites his tongue in front of their daughters. Their strange friendship and enmity is only allowed to show in subtle things to prevent the children, the girls in particular, from hearing swear words in any language or see either father pointing a gun at each other again.
“Di, Princess, didn’t your mummy get you that wig at the costume shop?” Alfie asks with such a shit eating grin that only makes Tommy hate him more. “The blonde one you asked for because you wanted to be Rapunzel for Halloween?”
“Alfie, I will tell Eva to tell your wife about her Russian toy if you don’t stop.” Tommy warns, well, vows as the girls fit the long wig on his head.
Alfie knew what toy he meant, he’d heard of it from Tatiana as they made a change to their plans after the orgy. Tommy has been mocked by him for letting Eva fuck him like that ever since.
“Tell her, I dare you.” The Jewish Gangster smirked. Tommy wasn’t sure if the Solomons were as adventurous in bed as he and his witch were or Rose was not into dominating her husband like Eva was.
Tommy then decides it's just easier to shove him into the pond again even if Alfie drags him down with him. “Girls, how about we stop playing princess tea party and have a picnic by the pond again.”

Family respect
Alfie and his Shelby wife are back for more adventures.
Tumblr media
"He's back." was the first thing Ada said to her when she picked up the phone, and that was enough for Y/N to understand who she was talking about.
If she had hardly known her mother, who died when she was young, she had not really known her father well either, while he was still alive.
The relationship between Arthur Shelby Sr. and his family had always been complicated. Long before Y/N was found by Polly when she was still a child, abandoned in an orphanage.
It had been luck or fate that her father quickly spoke of her in a letter sent to his sister, writing that he had made a little mistake during a trip. That was what he named Y/N, his little mistake.
The rest of Shelby didn't see her that way. They had adored her from the moment they saw the girl, welcoming her as if she had always been there, as if they had the same mother, and protecting her against this drunken and tyrannical father.
There was still respect for the elders. This notion was important to the romani, and some therefore found it difficult to completely rebel against the man despite his many faults.
This was especially difficult for Arthur. He admired him when he was younger, and even though he often stood up for his brothers and sisters, he blindly followed him in all his dangerous plans.
He had often gotten into trouble because of their father. Tommy was very angry with him for that.
This naivety was undoubtedly one of the reasons why it was not Arthur who managed the family affairs even though he was the oldest.
He never complained about it. As he followed their father, he followed Thomas without question, recognizing that his little brother was smarter, more stubborn, better at business and discussion.
But the few times their father had passed through Birmingham again, he had criticized this absurd hierarchy, and even if Arthur eventually bowed his head to Tommy, there were always several days when he was at their father's side, ready to believe that he had changed.
“Where is Thomas ?” Y/N asked her sister, because she didn't want to hear more about their father at the moment.
"Probably in one of the neighboring farms, with horses, to calm down and stop himself from shooting someone between the eyes."
"And the others ?"
"Polly is talking to them in the kitchen. She thinks dad wants something. Money probably. He'll leave quickly when he gets what he's looking for. But I'm afraid of what will happen in the meantime."
"I'll take care of it. I'll find Arthur." Y/N promised, because absolutely anything could happen to Arthur Senior, no one would be sad, but leaving her brother was out of the question.
Ollie asked nothing when she ordered him to send his best men to look for her older brother, and to watch what he was doing. He just nodded, calling her "Madam Solomons" with great respect.
According to Alfie, she had seduced the poor boy, as well as many of his employees, the residents of Candem, and even the dog.
"Before, Cyril sat with me by the fire. Now he moans by the door until you come home. Where have you been, love ?"
“You know very well where I was.”
"Damn right. With Tommy, dear Tommy. Tell me, treacle, why are my men outside a bar instead of working, uh ? Because when I asked Ollie, he just shrugged his shoulders, saying that those were the orders, but I didn’t give those orders. Remind me who’s in charge here ?”
“Cyril.”
"Very funny, love. Hilarious. Why are my men following this crazy dog who serves as your brother ?"
Of course Y/N could have told him. It would have been simple, and Alfie would have sighed and muttered insults, because the whole thing was nonsense and he didn't really care because it wasn't his family.
Since it wasn't his family, she decided there was no need for him to know the details.
There was no need for him to hear about her father.
So she simply replied that Arthur was in trouble, which wasn't a lie, and that she was just checking to make sure he wasn't going to end up in prison, or worse.
If he noticed that she was hiding something, her husband accepted it, growling when he saw that she was petting the dog before giving him attention.
Several days passed, and Arthur Shelby Sr did not leave. The whole community was nervous, which made the London underground scene much more dangerous than usual.
So Y/N went by herself to look for her brother in the tenth pub he had visited this week, finding him alone at the counter while their father was talking with some men in another room.
"Little sis ! In my arms !" shouted the eldest cheerfully, hugging her tenderly.
“Come home with me.”
"I can't. Dad needs me for a case. A big thing."
"You know very well how this is going to end. It always ends the same way."
"You sound like Tommy… He's changed this time. He wants to make amends, he has the right for a chance."
"He got more chances than Judas got silver coins, Arthur. Please."
"Y/N ? Is that you ? You grew up, I almost didn't recognize you ! Beautiful. When I think that I saw you as a mistake, I was wrong, right, son ? A charming girl, all men would want her."
In that moment, she saw in her brother's eyes that he knew he had a choice. He could defend her, saying that no one talked about his little sister like that, not even their father. He could also keep quiet, nodding his head and not talking about her marriage.
But he had drunk a lot, and despite all this time he still had resentment towards Alfie, so he opened his stupid mouth.
“She married a Jew.”
Their father turned to Arthur with a huge frozen smile, waiting for a follow-up to this joke, before looking at Y/N again with a darker look, understanding that he was serious.
"… A Jew ? You married a pompous old cheapskate ?"
"Arthur, come home with me." Y/N insisted, trying to ignore everything around her brother.
"He's not just pompous, he's crazy. And a coward. And mean. He can't be trusted. I'm sure he's putting on an act to get to us, holding Y/N hostage."
"Well said, son. It's quite possible that's what happening. They know how to play, those dirty rats."
"Arthur, come home with me."
"I knew right away he was evil. Even before he killed Billy and betrayed us. I don't know why Tommy agreed to work with him again, or give him our sister's hand."
"Thomas has always been less clever than you. They're a bit sodomite, you know ? He was able to seduce several of us for sure."
"No… No, that bastard son of a bitch, I'll kill him."
"Arthur, insult my husband once more and you will never see me again."
The threat caught her brother's attention for a second, like the tears in her eyes, but their father continued to criticize Alfie, and as always Arthur followed him blindly, considering that nothing could happen to him if he imitated his father.
A hand then rested on her shoulder, while she hesitated between crying and hitting him. Alfie's smile was quick, only for her, as he held her close, watching the two Arthurs who were surprised to see him.
Y/N thought he would say something, but he only placed a kiss on her forehead, leading her outside, to the car that took them home.
"… I'm sorry."
"Why, treacle ? Because your father is an asshole and your brother is a moron ? I don't see how this is your fault."
“I’m still sorry.”
"Nothing I haven't already heard. I promise I've never slept with Tommy."
"You are not funny." she whispered as she sobbed, letting the tension leave her body. He muttered that she was probably right as he took her in his arms, not knowing what to do to comfort her.
It was not easy to lose a family member. Y/N had been close to all of her siblings, but Arthur had always been there for her, like she had always been there for him, standing up for him, respecting his ideas, making sure he was okay.
She loved him, but she also loved her husband, and she could not tolerate him being insulted like this. If she said she wouldn't talk to him anymore, then she wouldn't talk to him anymore.
So it was a shock to find him in the middle of her living room the next day, holding his cap with two hands, looking miserable and embarrassed. Y/N almost told him to leave, before seeing Alfie standing in the corner, tapping the ground with his cane.
"Well, come on, mate. The lady is waiting."
"… I'm sorry, lil sis."
“Where is father ?”
"In prison, I think. He organized bets, the coppers caught him. They would have had me if… I mean if…"
"If I hadn't saved his sorry ass." Alfie translated, raising his eyebrows when Arthur growled at him. "Maybe I should have left him, he made you cry after all and I didn't like it."
"Y/N… I'm sorry. Your husband is a cunt, but… But he's not that bad, I think. I see that you're happy and he treats you well. I want you happy. I'll try… If he doesn't deserve it, I won't knock his teeth out."
"Mazel tov ! I'll buy you a drink, brother-in-law, but I don't drink and I want you to leave. Well, come one. Out."
Her husband still gave Arthur time to hug his sister, who accepted his apologies on the condition that he finally stopped following their father in his usual bullshit.
To avoid any problems, she only notice out loud after he had left that he had not winced when Alfie called him "brother-in-law".
“Hangover, probably.”
"Or he considers you part of the family now. Normally it's Polly, Tommy, John or me who keep him from completely tripping."
"If you hadn't cried, I would have let him drown in his beer and piss, treacle."
"I wonder how the cops knew, our father is often quite secretive. He moslty ruins everything by wanting more money or insulting someone."
"Oh. Someone who looks like Ollie may or may not have called the police on orders from their boss." Alfie muttered, pouting a little.
"… Arthur will kill you if he finds out."
"He said you were a mistake. Nobody says my wife is a mistake. Would you rather he be in jail or at the bottom of the Thames ? Now I'm sleepy, love. I've been running all night to find your stupid brother, come to bed with me."
“It’s nine in the morning.”
"So what ?"
The only true thing her brother had said was that Alfie was insane, but that wasn't a bad thing. His madness was charming, tender and funny, and if one day they had children, he would be the most protective and caring father in the world.
You only had to see him with Cyril to be sure, even if he slammed the door in the dog's face to be alone for a few hours, only letting him in because he couldn't concentrate anymore. cause of the squealing.
"There you go. Before, he stayed on the ground, now he jumps in my place to press against you, while it's me who opens the door for him despite the cold and my poor back."
“Shut up Alfie and go back to sleep.”
"It is noon."
"Come here."
"Very well, damn woman. You will explain to my men why I was not at work."
Since they had all heard about Y/N's family troubles, they adored her, and were quite happy that the boss wasn't there to yell at them, no one asked Y/N why Alfie had been absent. They even gave her flowers, which greatly annoyed the King of Camden.
They didn't ask if he wanted flowers too. The Shelby sent him some gifts, bottles, money and a horse, without having to say why, and Alfie was in a weird mood for the rest of the day.
Y/N only smiled, knowing that he was lost but proud to be accepted by her family.

“Who let you in?” the man who was sitting facing the open balcony door asked.
“How’d you know it was me?” the other man, who was standing at the entrance of the room, responded with his own question.
“Smelt the smoke and horse shit the second you stepped through that archway,” the first man mused, earning a snort from the second. “So I’ll ask again: who let you in?”
“Your wife…”
“Figures she did,” the first man cut the second off, muttering the comment under his breath.
“Your wife’s assistant let me in after she told me to get lost and slammed the door in my face,” the rest of the statement was shared, which made the first man finally spin in his seat to look back towards the archway.
Silence hung in the air for a few moments, the two men staring at each other from several paces away…much like they had on that fated day all those months ago. “So why didn’t ya listen to her?” the first man finally broke the quiet, his quip conjoined with a look of query.
“It’s been a while, hasn’t it, Alfie?” the second man asked, his eyebrows just slightly raised.
“It has,” the first man nodded, pursing his lips together for a moment before he continued, “yet it is still sooner than the day in which I thought I’d see Tommy Shelby again.”
Tommy Shelby just shook his head at the man’s remark, looking at the ground as he pursed his lips. It didn’t faze him in the slightest.
“Why’re you here then?” Alfie asked, still wanting to get to the bottom of the Birmingham man’s presence. However, he interjected again before said man even had the chance to speak: “you’ve come to finish me off, haven’t ya? Since ya couldn’t get it right the first time.”
“I’ve come with something,” Tommy answered, not even bothering to respond to Alfie’s second comment.
He then stepped towards the chair that the other man was sitting in, his hands still behind his back. Anyone else would have wondered if maybe they’d got it right…maybe he was actually there to finish his old adversary off. But Alfie wasn’t bothered in the slightest. No, he could tell from the manner in which Tommy approached him.
“I want to offer a congratulations…on your daughter,” Tommy finished his statement once he was standing in front of Alfie. Alfie looked him over with raised eyebrows, wondering just how a busy, business-minded man like him would have gotten such information. “(Y/N) told me the news. She got word of it from Rose,” Tommy gave the curious man some more information.
“That Rosie…” Alfie mused with a slight shake of his head, “I had a feelin’ that she hadn’t cut off all contact with you Shelbys.” He couldn’t help but smile at the thought of his wife still keeping up a regular correspondence with the wife of the man who’d shot him.
(Y/N) and Rose had hit it off practically from the moment they met each other. Their friendship went beyond their husbands’ business partnership, and so when one disgruntled husband aimed a gun at the other and pulled the trigger, the two women tried hard not to let it come completely between them. There some time where radio silence prevailed…actually most out the time over the course of the last year was filled with radio silence, but it didn’t seem like a beat was missed when Rose contacted (Y/N) to tell her of the newest addition to the Solomons family.
Although Tommy was more hesitant to make amends, he couldn’t deny his wife’s request to deliver something to the newest Solomons.
“She wanted me to give you this,” Tommy then said, finally revealing the tan, stuffed rabbit that he’d brought with him. “To give to her,” he included, making his intentions more clear.
“I knew you weren’t givin’ me a stuffed rabbit,” Alfie quipped, snorting to himself before continuing, “or at least I hope you were plannin’ to.”
“I wasn’t planning on doing that, Alfie, no,” Tommy shook his head, dismissing the comment before it gained any ground. “The rabbit’s for your girl.”
Alfie took a moment to look over the other man again. He was still holding the rabbit out in front of him, waiting for Alfie to take it. Tommy wondered how long Alfie was going to make him stand like this.
Finally he took it. “She’ll like it,” Alfie stated, eyeing over the animal from close up now. He couldn’t deny that it felt soft in his hands. Allie would surely love it. “Thanks, Tommy.”
“My three couldn’t go to bed without it,” Tommy commented, a small smile gracing his lips as he thought of his three daughters and the love they had for that very stuffed rabbit.
A look of realization flashed across Alfie’s face as he heard Tommy’s comment. He brought his hand up to his jaw and ran it down his cheek slowly, stroking his beard as if he was in thought. “Have a seat,” he then said, gesturing to the chair that was set directly across from the one he was sitting in. He waited until the other man was seated before continuing, “three girls, huh?” he mused, sounding like he was talking more so to himself than anything.
“Yeah,” Tommy nodded in response.
“A proper girl dad,” Alfie commented then.
“A what?” Tommy asked with furrowed eyebrows.
“You’re a dad that’s got all girls, hence the fucking term girl dad…stick with it, Tommy,” the response came laden with derision.
Tommy raised his eyebrows at the other man’s comments, looking to the ground as he let the air cool off before he cleared his throat and nodded his head. “Yeah, a girl dad then.” He ran a hand along the back of his head as he spoke, wondering if he was even using the term correctly. Alfie didn’t comment, so he guessed that he didn’t seem to care none.
Instead the newer father continued on with the conversation. “Does it ever get hard?”
“What? Being a girl dad?” Tommy looked over at him again.
“No, not being able to hit your fucking mark when you’re fifteen fucking paces away,” Alfie retorted, “yes, being a girl dad,” he then exaggerated his words.
Tommy bit his tongue yet again. He wasn’t here to get into a fight with Alfie Solomons. The rabbit currently sitting in the other man’s lap was supposed to serve as a sort of olive branch.
“It does,” he finally answered after a moment’s pause.
“Give me some fuckin’ detail, mate,” Alfie asked.
“Fuckin’ hell, Alfie,” Tommy sighed under his breath, pressing the pads of his thumbs against his eyelids. He cleared his throat again as he thought of how he’d answer the question. “It’s been hard from the moment we brought Thea home. A different sort of hard than the ‘hard’ I’ve experienced prior. But it’s also been rewarding...with Thea, then Evie and now Juniper. I’ve learned more from them than from anything else I’ve ever done.”
Alfie took a moment to digest what his confidant had just shared with him. He truly didn’t expect Tommy Shelby to come out with such meaningful statements. I guess even the worst of men can change their tones, he thought to himself. “I didn’t know ya had it in ya, Tommy,” he commented, exuding a breath of a laugh as he shook his head.
Tommy kept his eyes locked on Alfie unsure of how to respond to his comment. He wondered if this was all some sort of game…if Alfie now wanted to toy with him; getting him to open up just to use the information against him.
“Thanks for sharing it though. I, uh…” Alfie paused, the sound of his voice cutting through Tommy’s thoughts and making him focus in again. “I’ll take all of the help I can get with this one. They say that raising a child takes a fucking village, or however that fucking saying goes.”
“There’s a great deal of joy in it too,” Tommy made sure to add, hoping to convey that having daughters, or kids at all for that matter, wasn’t only stressful. “I just know that I wouldn’t be able to do it without (Y/N) though.”
“That’s the same with me and my Rosie. A fuckin’ trooper, that woman is,” Alfie agreed in regards to his wife. Truthfully, he wouldn’t be here right now if it weren’t for Rose Solomons. He genuinely owed his life to her…and he was going to spend the rest of it showing her.
Silence fell between the two men then, both sitting comfortably in their thoughts of the women they had in their lives, and of how much their respective wives meant to them. The silence hung until the sound of small feet came pattering off of the hardwood in the hallway.
“Daddy! Daddy!” a shrill voice of a small girl soon accompanied the hurried footsteps. Said girl quickly appeared in the archway of Alfie office. Along with her frantic demeanor, Alfie was also able to see streaks of tears on her chreks.
“What’s wrong, Allie?” he asked her, his brows furrowing together.
“Cyril chewed on my stuffie, daddy!” she exclaimed, hiccuping as she spoke through her tears. “It was my favorite stuffie!”
“Awe now love, I’m sorry about that,” Alfie began, opening his arms to the child as she came over to him. She quickly fell into them, and he wasted no time in hugging her tightly. “He’s just a brute that knows nothing of favorite stuffies,” he consoled her as she continued to sniffle her tears away.
Tommy watched on as the moment played out in front of him. He laughed to himself as hearing the reason behind the problem at hand took him back to the moments where Cyril had chewed his girls’ stuffies; there had to have been several instances during the dog’s stay at Arrow House.
“I don’t have a stuffie now, daddy,” Allie whimpered, finally lifting her head from her father’s chest. “Mum said it was too covered in slobber to be saved.”
“Well I’ve got just the fix for ya, Allie,” Alfie began, unwrapping one of his arms from her so that he could blindly search for the stuffed rabbit that Tommy had just handed him. He continued when he found the animal, “now I know it’s no bear, and I know that your favorite stuffies have all been bears, but this lovely little lass was just placed upon my lap moments before you came runnin’ in.”
Allie’s eyes immediately found the rabbit, and she had it in her tight embrace within an instant. “This stuffie is so soft! And she has a lovely bow!” she observed, now beaming with excitement. “Thank you so much, daddy!” she smiled at her father.
“Thanks have to go to that man,” Alfie told his daughter, nodding in Tommy’s direction. He bit his tounge and stopped the urge to add ‘the one who shot your father’ because even he knew this wasn’t the time for that. He didn’t want to bring that feud into Allie’s realm.
“What’s his name?” Allie asked in a loud whisper, her shy eyes finding Tommy’s.
“Tell ‘er your name, mate,” Alfie beckoned Tommy to share the information.
“It’s Tommy,” the other man followed suit, smiling as he spoke.
Allie observed him for a moment, surely trying to decide what she felt about him. A few beats of silence passed before a smile formed on her face. “Thank you, Mr. Tommy,” she said in a small voice.
“You’re welcome, Allie,” Tommy nodded, his smile widening.
“Dad you have to yell at Cyril now,” Allie turned back to her dad, a deep frown present on her face.
“I’ll make sure he knows what he’s done,” Alfie assured her, “go play, love.”
With one last smile, Allie hopped off of her father’s lap and exited the room almost as quick as she entered it.
“That fuckin’ dog…” Alfie trailed off, shaking his head, “why’d you give him back?”
“You wanted him back, Alfie,” Tommy answered in a monotone voice.
“You may be right,” Alfie conceded, cracking a smile as he thought about the dog.
“Your daughter’s lovely,” Tommy commented.
“She is, ain’t she?” Alfie answered, “light of my fuckin’ life, that girl…both her and her mum.”
Tommy nodded, his mind going to his wife and daughters. There was no doubt that he shared the same sentiment towards his girls.
Oh, the joys of being a girl dad…even if — or rather when, because it’ll surely happen again — Tommy and Alfie were at odds with each other, they’ll always have the shared title as something they can both relate to.

January 2024
I'm so glad that 2023 ended... I hope this year is so much better for everyone.
I didn't expect last month's list to be well received. I just wanted to show my admiration and gratitude to all those incredible writers. So there was no need to thank me for being included in the list, since recommending your stories is the least I can do as a reader.
Your writing is wonderful. Some of the things I've read this month have left me speechless, I didn't expect to find in a fic the quality of something that should be published instead.
Thank you for sharing your stories, for dedicating your time to writing, and for offering readers (for free) these masterpieces.
You can find the previous list here.
(If you are in this list and don't want to be in it let me know, please).

Picturing Alfie as a dad just warms my heart so much. You just know that he would be the best dad ever and have so much love for a little one.
This is such a cute fic ❤️
A/N: fulfilling @j23r23's request made here. Happy reminder that requests are open!!
Summary: Alfie comes homes late at night and finds his pregnant wife sleeping on the couch and confesses his fear to his unborn child
Pairing: Alfie Solomons x F!reader
Warning: sexual connotations towards the end, language, pregnancy themes
Tumblr media
Alfie was never one to be easily scared. He had a tough upbringing and, being the man of the house to his two older sisters, Rebecca and Debora, and their divorced mother, he had to grow up fast.
His father had left before Alfie was even born, leaving his son to become the only man of the house.
Sure, his mother was quite the mama bear herself. But there had always been resentment from Alfie towards his unacquainted father for leaving his mother to fend for her children on her own.
Alfie vowed that, if he ever became a father, he would support and help the mother of his child however he could, no matter how unconventional.
You felt like the luckiest woman in the world to be married to him. Alfie was nothing like most men. Most men would participate very little in these affairs, believing them to be limited only to women, but not Alfie. And if anyone dissed him for it, he'll tell those cowards to fuck right off because he wouldn't leave you alone in one of the most painful moments of your life.
It wasn't very common for you either. Part of you was so worried about just having him present for the birth. You worried he wouldn't want to go anywhere near you after it - obviously after you've healed - or have another child.
"Love, after the war I've seen, there is no amount of blood that can scare me away. Now, I won't pry if you don't want me to, of course. I'll respect whatever boundaries you have. But I would like to be there to hold your hand at the very least," he'd say.
He was hellbent on getting you all the best doctors and only the most experienced midwives to assist with pregnancy and the labor.
He didn't avoid making love to you because you were pregnant. It surprisingly turned him him on, made him certain about getting a baby back into you as soon as he could.
Every night, he came home to you with your favorite sweet and treated you to a warm bath together entitled to a foot rub and back rub just before bed.
Every afternoon, he'd meet you exactly at 3 when the weather wasn't too sunny or cold for a walk around the square or the block.
Every morning, once it became harder for you to bend over, he'd kneel down every time to get your heels on for you and compliment how beautiful you looked.
Regardless of the arguments you'd have, he was always consistent with his help. It didn't matter how he felt, he put his feelings aside as he reminded himself that they were nothing compared to the human growing in your body.
Your unborn child had reminded him of his sisters struggles during their terms. Crying over their husbands' affairs, neglected and alone, desperately wondering how they would raise the child. He was only a boy at the time, but he made sure to remember their names.
Once older and stronger, he tracked down all the men responsible for breaking his sisters' hearts and punished them with a beat-down they'd never forget. He considered offing them, but he figured the very least they could do is provide financial support. So, before they could even speak right or breathe through a healed nose, he put them into jobs his contacts proposed especially to him in order to keep a close on them.
That was simply Alfie's nature. Protective and vengeful.
Despite barely having to lift a finger for anything ever since Alfie hired an entire team to assist you, your body still felt exhausted and heavy from the weight of the growing baby in your belly.
You found yourself sat on the couch with Cyril snoring peacefully at your feet, warmed by the crackling fireplace before you.
You wanted to lie in your bed and rest your swollen feet in the comfortable warmth of your cotton linens, but Alfie still wasn't home. You worried when he got home late.
It took one look at the winding wooden stairs to convince you to swing your legs up on the couch, stretching them over the plush cushions.
Closing the heavy book in your hand, you tucked it snug between your side and the back of the couch for a quick shut-eye.
When Alfie arrived home, he tried to be as quiet as possible. He wasn't sure if you'd gone to bed, but he did know you had trouble sleeping without him. Your limited sleep positions were nothing as comfortable as snuggling up to his side.
Locking the door, he hung up his coat and hat. Just before he could make it to the first step of the stairs, he heard Cyril's snoring coming from the living room. That's when he noticed the light radiating from the fireplace, dancing against your skin as you slept soundly.
He stood in the door watching you for a moment, basking in the image of your sleeping frame. The warmth of the fireplace could not compete with of that which spread through his chest.
Alfie smiled to himself as he gazed upon you, his eyes admiring every crevice and hair on your face. The line of your nose, the eyelashes you'd bat at him, the shape of your lips and the faint curve of your smile lines. He loved knowing he'd been the main cause of those particularly.
But, as his gaze moved down to your protruding belly, he was reminded how close the day was. He wondered how the months flew by so fast.
He felt like he had so much time to prepare for fatherhood, but he felt just as hopeless as when you first told him about the baby.
Stepping into the living room, he walked over quietly to join Cyril on the floor in front of the couch.
He stared into the fireplace as cyril shifted to rest his head on Alfie's lap - his laziest greeting yet.
Alfie sat on one side, leaving his opposite leg bent to rest his arm over his knee. Your belly was just inches away.
Moving his gaze back your clothed bump, he sighed heavily.
"You know, I never met my father, right," he whispered to the unborn child. "I think it's wise you know that now, 'fore you come out. Didn't have one growing up, see? So I 'avent got the slightest idea of how to be one."
Lured from your nap by Alfie's voice, you slowly blinked your eyes open. Although Alfie's head of hair was all you saw, you realized he wasn't talking to you and he couldn't see you were awake.
Eavesdropping wasn't very polite, but you couldn't help yourself. You didn't want to stop him, but hearing him to the baby in you was quite heartwarming so you decided to let Alfie have a bonding moment of his own.
"Truth is you got me downright scared," he continued. "Even after months, I still am downright terrified and you ain't even 'ere yet... I know it's a lot to ask, yeah, especially since you're still in there, blissfully unaware of the horrors of the world. But I give you my word I'll try my best to be the best for you and your mum. I hope you can understand that even when you decide to hate me whenever I give you an earful. Though I doubt I can do it. Think your mum will have to sort you out," he mumbled with a playful smirk. "I'll try my best for you, yeah? I just hope it's enough."
Alife's smirk faded as she gazed at your belly. He felt pathetic, venting to an unborn child as if that would solve all his problems. Alfie hated admitted, and he would never admit it to anyone but you, but he was terrified of becoming a father.
You didn't blame him; you had your own fears as well, so you could understand why this precious and fragile life had him so frightened.
He still hadn't noticed you were awake or that you had heard his confession. Until you lifted a hand to stroke the hair on the back of his head.
" 'eard all that, did ya?"
He didn't exactly blush, but he did feel warmth racing around his face with embarrassment.
"You're going to be a great father, Alfie" you answered. "I know you're scared. I'm scared too. But as long as we're together and we have each other, we can get through anything."
"Yeah, I know, love," Alfie nodded and sighed. He hated talking about his emotions, even if it was to the only person he could trust blindly. "I just don't want to be a disappointment like my father, if you could even call 'im that much."
"You won't be, and I'll tell you why. You're nothing like him," you smiled, carding your fingers through his brown locks. "You're a good man, Alf. I know you do what you have to do out there, but what matters to me is the man you are in here. And in here, you're a good man. And I wouldn't want to be carrying anyone's child. I'm honored to be the mother of our babe."
"You really mean that?" he smiled trying to look over his shoulder at you, as far as his neck - and age - allowed.
"Every word. You're worried enough to ask your sisters and the midwives for help, Alf. Not many men care to even worry about that sorta thing."
"I'm not like most men," he smirked feeling a sense of pride. "How'd you know about that though?"
"Becca told me you been meeting her for tea every week for advice."
"I fucking knew it. I knew she'd blabber off to you," he chuckled shyly.
"It's nothing to ashamed of, love. I actually find your level of concern and willingness to help in whichever way extremely attractive," you smirked stroking the sensitive skin on his neck with your finger.
"Do you now?" He grinned mischievously knowing exactly where this was headed. One of the perks that came with your pregnancy, in the later stages of it, was the sharp peak of sexual desires.
There were no more worries about you getting pregnant - too late for that now - and seeing your belly swollen, with his child that he put inside you, only made him wish he could put more and more.
"I think I like where this is headed."

American Woman (Thomas Shelby x American OC) Ch. 55: Resolved Debt
Tumblr media
Masterlist: https://www.tumblr.com/sl-newsie/739551758747090944/american-woman-thomas-shelby-x-american-oc?source=share
For the rest of the day I keep myself busy by cleaning out the entire house. Every time I look over at my suitcase in the corner my stomach ties into a knot. Maybe Alfie’s right. I shouldn't be here. All that’s happened since I got here has gone from complicated to worse. And-
Okay, where is Thomas? I take another glance out the window. Mr. Solomons has returned with his gang but Thomas is missing. He wouldn’t forget to accompany his friend back to his car. Did something come up?
I leave Charlie asleep on the sofa and stick my head out the door to call across the street.
“Where’s Thomas? I thought he was with you.”
Alfie looks up and sees me shouting. He motions for his men to wait and walks over to the front steps, leaning his cane on the railing.
“The man left for some errands. Mentioned something about the foundation or whatever.”
“Just him? No one else went with him?”
He scoffs. “How the fuck would I know?”
That doesn’t sound like Thomas. All these weeks he’s stressed about security and keeping in pairs. He would have told Alfie where he was going.
“Alone…” A light flicks on in my head and panic sprints through me. Polly! “That’s means-! I need to find him!”
I lurch forward to start running but Alfie reaches out and grabs my arm. No no no! This must be what Polly set up! Changretta will want to get Thomas alone so he can kill him-!
“Whoa, whoa.” Alfie tugs me back. “Whatever this mess is, you are not in it.”
I try to pull away. “Polly did this! She-!”
“Not. Your. Business. You want something to do? Go tend to his boy.”
“I-”
“Verena.” The Jewish gangster gives me a certain look. “We both know that a father without his son is the worst thing we can let happen to him. He needs someone like you to look after Charlie.”
“I have been!” I cry out with a cross between rage and despair. “And he never tells me anything! I am not going to wait for a note saying he’s been shot!”
“Steenstra, coming from a man who knows how Tommy thinks, let me say this. He has strange ways of showing affection.” Alfie, seeing that I’ve calmed down a fraction, pats my shoulder. “I’ll leave it at that.”
Yes, because that cleared up so many questions! I watch the man stride back to his car and see him give a final wave as the vehicle starts driving away. So I’m subjected to what all other Shelby women struggle through. Staying safe indoors while I wait for Thomas to tell me what’s going on.
Thud! The sound of the back door sends me sprinting down the hall. No more of this-!
“Polly?”
The Romanian woman walks past my shocked face and starts to light a cigarette.
“What a surprise,” I droll darkly. “Are you here to apologize to Charlie for killing off his dad?”
She flicks some ash into the sink. “Tommy isn’t dead.”
Not dead? Not…? Okay, then what did happen? She can’t hide it from me! Polly’s worried just as I am!
I clench my fists and march straight up to her. “Somebody better start telling me what the fuck is going on right now-!”
“We’re holding a family meeting,” Polly explains all too calmly. “I’ll explain everything then. Right now, keep your head clear. You don’t need to pick up Tommy’s hot-headedness.”
“My head clear? My head clear?” I hiss. “Do you have any idea how hard I’ve been trying to keep a clear head throughout these past weeks?”
Polly just shakes her head and walks off to see Charlie. My shoulders slump and I lean against the wall. Not Polly too. Is Ada the only other one who understands this insanity? Can somebody tell me anything?
Knock knock.
I cannot handle any more of this. That better be a bloody angel because, dear God, I need some good news-!
“Hello.”
Thomas. It’s Thomas. Alive. Holding a parcel.
“Thank Christ. You son of a bitch!”
My anger fazes into frustrated relief and my knees buckle. Thomas uses his free hand to grab me just before I can crumple to the ground. He stands me up and I bury my face into his warm coat. At the same time I weakly pound a fist against his shoulder, still raging about his return.
“Y-You could’ve- I thought you were going to die!” I gasp. “What happened, Thomas? What the fuck is going on?” I look back at the parcel. “And what is this? More guns?”
Thomas clears his throat and helps me stand straighter. “Verena, about the argument from before. I understand that you’re only looking out for your family. None of this is your fault. I know you’re not working for Changretta.”
“Thomas… That’s really sweet, and I accept your apology, but just moments ago I was about to pull my hair out worrying about if you had been killed!”
“Here, here. Let’s get inside.” Thomas ushers me back into the warm house and shuts the door. “I know, none of this has been fair for you. And the Hudson-”
“Don’t mention the car, Thomas. I needed to stop keeping quiet and thought that it would help-”
“Oh it does, love.” Thomas licks his lips. “It’s a gorgeous car. But I still owe you a big apology for this whole mess. So to make it up, Charlie and I picked out this a few days ago. Thought you’d like it.”
He passes me the box. Why does he look… scared? Excited? It’s hard to tell. And why is the box light? I remove the top and peer inside. It’s- It’s… A beautiful white coat! An elegant, warm coat that feels almost too soft to the touch. He picked this out for me?
My jaw drops and I immediately start shaking my head. “Thomas, I cannot accept this. It’s too much.”
Thomas sees the joy in my eyes and refuses to take the parcel back. “‘Course not. You need something to keep you warm here. Please.” He puts a hand over mine and gently pushes the box further against me. “Please take it.”
“It’s genuine fox fur!” I gush. “This must have cost a fortune! If I wear this half of England will come running expecting me to be some prime duchess or somebody important.”
“You are important. To us.”
He didn’t say ‘to me.’ Is this an apology for the argument or saying sorry for pushing me onto the ‘women to pay no mind’ list?
“Thanks again for watching Charlie.”
He’s had his hands full with this vendetta business that he’s had no time for his own son. A steep understatement. So was I wrong? Thomas really does care? He just… has strange ways of showing affection.
I grudgingly accept the gift and smile warmly. “You never need to thank me for watching him.”
Thomas closes his eyes and rubs his temple. “There’s so much I need to thank you for, love.”
Then why do I still feel pushed away?
“Thomas.” I hold up the coat. “You don’t need to apologize with this. Just promise me you will keep me informed. Promise me.”
He leans against the wall I’ve backed him into and sighs. “I can’t.” His piercing blue eyes look down at me with something I can’t quite decipher. “You know why.”
I bite my lip and take a deep breath. “Yes. I know why. But it doesn’t hurt to ask again.”
I love you, Thomas! And it makes me saddened with worry and sick with anger that I will never be good enough for you.
Thomas starts to reach over but holds back. “I know you still believe I’m worth saving. But- But all I’ve given you are more problems. You don’t-”
“Tommy.”
Polly cuts him off and motions for him to follow her to the parlor. Did she do that on purpose? How am I supposed to pry anything out of Thomas without being interrupted?
Thomas sits in an armchair, an unlit cigarette hanging from his lips, and stares at Charlie playing with his blocks. He doesn’t notice right away when Polly offers him a drink.
“What do you think you’re going to tell Arthur?” she asks.
Thomas doesn’t blink. “I’m going to tell them the truth.”
“Did she like the coat?” Charlie asks shyly from the floor.
Thomas doesn’t answer right away so I speak for him. “I love it, Charlie. It’s beautiful. Did you help pick it out?”
He grins proudly. “Yeah! It was the softest one.”
In the corner of my eye I see Thomas look over at me. He’s still holding something back. But what?
Polly moves over to look out the window. “They’re here.”
I will have to wait for another time. Again. I was so close to telling him.
Another family meeting. Another awkward silence while everyone waits for Thomas to speak. This time I choose to wait with Charlie in the hall while everyone else gathers around the table.
After a minute Arthur speaks up. “Heard there was a shooting today.”
Thomas nods. “Yeah. I killed three men today. Now our enemies will have to wait.”
Arthur and I exchange the same look of surprise, while Lizzie and Ada don’t look the least bit shaken. That’s what was waiting for Thomas today. But he lived.
Charlie tugs at my skirt and points to his dad. “Was daddy in trouble?”
“No, no,” I whisper and kneel down next to him. “Your vader just met up with some bad men.”
“Suppose they took you by surprise?” Arthur asks gruffly.
“No. I knew they were coming.”
Hold the phone. He knew?
Polly speaks up. “A few months ago I received a letter from Luca Changretta, offering to spare my son if I gave up Tommy. And I gave Tommy up.”
“Which is the plan that Polly and I agreed on,” Thomas explains. “I knew Luca would want to pull the trigger himself so I used this as a setup to bring him in.”
He locks eyes with me and sees my growing irritation. All this time? He knew all this time what he was getting himself into and he told me nothing!
“I didn’t get Luca, but I got three. All right?” He walks over and leans down to pick Charlie up. “Come here, you.”
Johnny Doggs holds up a glass. “I thought you’d gone soft. I drink to you, Tom.”
“So you got three?” Uncle Charlie asks.
Thomas nods. “I got three.”
“Well, I drink to you, Tom.”
Charlie looks back and forth in confusion. “Dad, you got three what?”
Thomas laughs and pokes his chest. “I got three shillings for a two-shilling horse.” I guess that’s one way to put it. “Now, my boy, you come with us, eh?”
Charlie giggles and gives me a wave goodbye. Arthur lets out a laugh and ruffles the boy’s hair.
“Been playing with Aunt Verena, eh Charlie?”
Suddenly Thomas’ gaze hardens. “No, Arthur.”
“Why not? She’s basically a sister.”
Yes. Why not? I should think that I deserve aunt status at this point. And why is Polly looking at Thomas like that? Almost like she knows something…
The Romanian woman catches me looking and busies herself by grabbing her coat. “I’m picking up Michael from the hospital tomorrow. Then I'm dropping him off to Mr. Gold on the outskirts.”
I stifle a laugh. “Michael? In the woods? He’s going to hate it.”
Polly rolls her eyes. “He’s going to deal with it.”
Once she walks out, Thomas sticks his head back in, with Charlie still clinging to his neck.
“We’re going out for a drink. When I bring Charlie back for his nap, will you watch him ‘til I get back tonight?”
I put my hands on my hips and give him a cheeky glare. “I suppose Charlie can spend more time with his non-aunt.” My teasing fades. “You’re not staying?”
Thomas notices my disappointment and tilts my chin up. “I've got some paperwork but I’ll be back. I promise.”
Thomas does fulfill his promise… eventually. He brings Charlie back just as it starts to turn dark, tucking the yawning child into bed. But he walks back out again, no doubt off to overwork himself. Thomas seemed eager to come back but does not return until the early hours of the morning. I don’t know what kept him but when I hear the door open I put down the dishes I’m washing and head straight for him.
“You’re back late. Charlie’s- Thomas? What is it?”
His face. All hints of conquering and happiness from earlier are gone. Replaced by a sad stare. He looks as if someone just slapped him.
Thomas’ mouth opens and closes while he tries to think of what to say. He pinches the bridge of his nose and removes his hat.
“Did Polly tell you?”
Tell me what? In case he hasn’t noticed yet, I’ve been kept in the dark with many important bulletins as of late.
“I take that as a no.” Thomas lets out a deep breath. “Lizzie, she’s… pregnant.”
Tug! My body goes still and I grip the dish towel even harder. The blood drains from my face. My heartbeat screams in my ears. I lean against the wall, keeping my shocked, distraught face hidden away. All this time…
“Th-That’s wonderful, Thomas,” I manage to say through my shreiking thoughts. “Another baby is another blessing.”
I feel Thomas put his warm hand on my tense shoulder. “Are you alright?”
Alright? Alright?! Is he fucking joking?!
“Yes, just tired.” I pull away and fling the towel onto the counter, changing to a colder persona. “Is there anything else, Mr. Shelby?”
My heartless tone hits Thomas square in the chest. A sorrowful look freezes over his face. Good.
“No.”
“Congratulations again. I’m sure Charlie will be happy to have a sibling.”
I rush back to my room and fight the urge to slam the door right off its hinges. It’s happening all over again. They have a baby, he marries her, I’m pushed away again. Sticks and stones, best wishes to them both. At least Grace brought a sense of peace to Thomas. Lizzie only seems to bring out the rough side of him.
Lizzie Stark? Lizzie fucking Stark. Back to his old ways. He will kiss any woman but me. Always another woman. Just when he starts to open up, he uses someone else. Is my love invisible to him? There he goes again, back to Lizzie while I’m taunted for being single.
Thud! That was the front door.
Yes. Go, Thomas. That’s one fucking context clue you pick up on! I want to be alone.
I’m just another whore to you, Thomas Shelby. You’ve said it yourself. We’re all whores, we just sell different parts of ourselves. I’ve sold you my time. Each year I saved my time for you and your family, your Shelby Company Limited. And for what?
Ring! Ring!
If that’s Lizzie Stark I’m going to rip the phone clear from the wall! I roughly pick up the receiver. On the other end I hear the distinct chatter of two people.
“Verena?”
No. No. No. I do not need a talk full of pity.
“Please, Finn… Not now. You too, Ada.”
I hear Ada sigh. “He told you?”
I choke back a sob and wipe the pooling tears from my eyes. “Yes. God smiles on us again.”
“Verena-”
“PLEASE!” I shriek and cover my mouth to keep myself from breathing too fast. “Just- Just leave me be.”
I hang up before they can argue. That does it. I’m not playing this game anymore. As soon as this bloody fight is over I’m packing my bags for home! Company employee or not, I will not stick around to work in these harassing conditions. Despite my lingering love for that klootzak, it’s not enough to win me over to stay anymore. No more moral obligation. My debt is finally paid.
Maybe I will be too cold, Thomas. Too empty and numb. But I’ve followed you around too long, hoping you might love me back. If this is what it takes to earn love, it’s a cost I’m not willing to pay.
And yet even if I’m leaving for good, my heart will never be free from you.

A witch and a rose
A second gift for Flor/@raincoffeeandfandoms , it was supposed to be wacky kid shenanigans, but then Eva demanded she be writtwn seriously, and i couldn't get her out of there.
I hope you like it
Cw: mentions of Tommy’s depression and suicidal thoughts
Gif by @hellomadelene
Tumblr media
1930
For Allie Solomons’ sixth birthday, Tommy had agreed to arrange ponies and horses for the girls to ride by the beach.
As if the antique dollhouse was not gift enough, he had complained when his witch of a wife asked, no, told him they were going take horses to Margate.
“Diane told Allie about her pony on their playdate, so I thought it would be nice for you to let the poor little girl get a pony ride for her birthday.” Eva answered his unspoken question as she was fond of doing before handing him baby Florence as she made damn sure the older children understood they were to be on their best behavior.
After Tommy shot him, Alfie had lost some of his looks.
What the bullet with his name hadn’t finished, was slowly being taken over by his skin cancer.
Did this horrify his children?
Absolutely not.
Like their mother and father, they had inherited an unnatural fascination with the scary and not so pretty aspects of life.
Five-year-old Diane and four year old Gabriel, in their last playdate, had schemed to touch Uncle Alfie’s face and, even worse, done it.
Tommy had hoped Alfie would have scared them into not doing it again ---Tommy didn’t know enough about his condition to know if it was contagious, he just knew its just something you don’t do--- but he just laughed and let them satisfy their curiosity.
“Why do I have to go. They are all babies.” Eight-year-old Charlie complained as he took his seat behind him.
Been a while since they went anywhere as a family.
Eva tried her best to pry him away from work after Polly’s death and his suicide attempts.
Went as far as using her friendship with Rose Solomons to get him to leave the house and the woods.
“Because we will be staying at Margate for the weekend, it will be fun, Carlitos.” Eva said hoping to get the boy to stop pouting. “Besides they’ll be plenty of boys for you to play with, Allie’s cousins will be there.”
“Will Auntie Florence be there?” Dia asked climbing after her brother.
She likes being in the middle, makes it a fucking pain on long drives because she has the bladder of a hummingbird.
“Yes, but we are calling her Esther when we are there.” He reminded her as he made up a lie as to why they can’t call her by Florence or her birth name, Frida. “So we don’t confuse her with the baby.”
How do you tell your children Auntie Florence was a spy and assassin who changed identities like one changes underwear?
“And for your Aunt Polly’s sake, please don’t touch Uncle Alfie’s face without permission.”
Tumblr media
The fact that they get there with no accidents is a miracle in itself.
Sometimes the children’s noises cause Tommy to lose his patience which lead to four crying children or worse, Tommy having an episode.
Tommy had suffered since that night.
Margate will do them good, Eva thinks.
Besides, it would help patch things up between her and Rose after they fought when they last saw each other in London.
Rose had called her a sellout when she saw that Eva and Tommy would be budding up to Mosley and the New Party.
Did Rose wait for Eva to explain what Alfie already knew?
No.
Could Eva not have used her daughter’s sixth birthday to tell her they were spying on the fascists to make sure the party never takes off?
Yes, but chances are Rose Coldwell-Solomons wouldn’t hear her out.
It had been a highly likely friendship, both women had strong opinions, valued freedom and most importantly, did not hesitate to make themselves heard.
Sure, it had been awkward when Eva had a whooping four children while Rose struggled with her infertility, but they had made it through those tentative moments and come out the better for it.
And then they had the worst fight after the kids’ playdate ended.
Rose had not been told that the Shelbys flirting with fascism was a cover. Alfie knew, hence why he had agreed to provide a distraction to have Mosley assassinated last January, but it seems no one had told his wife.
To her they were traitors and the worst sort of people.
They had said things, they had burned the metaphorical bridge they stood on and before she could regain her senses, Rose had ended their friendship and left without ever looking back.
Now she was here with gifts and knowing Florence Solomons had her back should Rose try to toss her out on her ass.
“I am not a child; you can’t bribe me with gifts.” Rose crossed her arms once they had had a moment alone in her kitchen.
They’d come early for this exact reason.
So far so good.
“I know, Rosie. I came to apologize; I should have told you why we are kissing Mosley’s ass after failing to kill him instead of assuming Alfie had told you.” Eva began her apology and thanked the Abrahamic god that Florence had given her the file detailing their mission written by Churchill himself.
“Yeah, you should have instead of cutting me out to make space for Cimme Mosley and her friends.” Rose remarked as she skimmed through the file.
“I’m sorry. Can you ever forgive me for being a pendeja about it?” the witch asked noting Rose’s defenses had lowered enough to soften towards her.
It’s all going to go to hell when she discovers this ruse has to last for the next four years.
Just until they know Mosley is not getting anywhere with his party.
“How long are we to pretend we are enemies?” Rose said getting to the agreement in the final page.
Something was happening in 1934, something bad and this chill only happened when Diane and Tommy were together.
Mosley wanted to hurt Tommy and he would hurt Eva’s little witch too.
“Four years. They are planning something, something awful. I don’t know yet, but I feel it in my bones. I only need four years to figure out what it is so I can stop it and make sure Mosley dies alone and his ideas with him.” Eva confessed to her friend and ally.
“I suppose I can forgive you, it’s for a worthy cause. But the moment you arrive in Margate, this---” she says gesturing to the file “--- stays out of my house.”
“Agreed, we have that rule at home. Been a fucking lifesaver.” The witch admits, breathing easier now that she has her friend back.
“We should return to the party; I want to see Allie’s face when she sees the ponies.” Rose smiled jubilantly; motherhood agreed with her.
It was so good to see her have this happiness so long denied her.
“I want to see Alfie’s when he sees Florence bring out her gift for her sweet little niece. What is your policy on a gold and diamond Star of David for Allie?” the witch asked. Maybe she should tell her about the hand painted illustrated Siddur and matching Torah as well and, oh, the wooden Noah’s Ark that was absolutely perfect, but that would wreck the surprise.

This is the cutest thing ever 😭
And so accurately Alfie. Your Alfie fics are so spot on, I love them!
BIRTHDAYS . ALFIE SOLOMONS
Tumblr media
summary: birthdays are a big event in the solomons household - especially when it's alfie's favourite daughter's big day. warnings: swearing, children being children, comlicated family dynamics, fluff, alfie loves all his children equally (honest), unedited word count: 2.2k a/n: nobody asked for this but here's a lil birthday story. this is the last of the prewritten stories but there's definitely more to come. ( i wrote this three melatonin deep so, if it makes no sense, forgive me!)
Alfie woke up to what felt like a ton of bricks being thrown onto his stomach.
"Fuckin' hell," he groaned, the bed bouncing up and down, jostling him from his sleep.
"Fucking hell," a little voice giggled from beside him and his eyes shot open at the sound. His daughter was kneeling beside him on the bed, already dressed for the day, wearing a frilly dress that reminded Alfie of a trifle, and pink ribbons in her - usually - wild hair.
"It's by birthday, dad," Bessie laughed, still bounching up and down on the bed.
"Have you already had your cake, Bess?" Alfie sat up begrudginly, leaning against the headboard, holding his arms out so Bessie could climb in his lap.
"Waiting for daddy," she pointed a finger at him in a way that reminded him of her mother, she was going through a phase of imitating everybody around her - it was endearing when she imitated her mum, less so when she imitated him.
"Well, we best get a move on, then," he swung his feet out of the bed, dragging the now three year old with him, her laughter drowning out the groan he let out due to the strain in his back from carrying the girl that seemed to get heavier everyday.
He carried her into the kitchen, ruffling Benjamin's hair as he passed him, the boy sitting quietly at the table eating his breakfast.
"Alfie, put her down," his wife warned as she fussed with the cake on the bench, little Noah perched on her hip, sucking on his thumb, taking in the scene. He was the calmest of the three children so far, he was only four months old, but Alfie swore he was going stay like that until adulthood - always calm, always studying those around him.
Alfie obeyed his wife, placing Bessie gently on the ground and walking to approach his wife, his daughter following close behind him, eyes fixed on the cake her mother was almost done perfecting.
He placed a chaste kiss on her lips, and then one on little Noah's hair, not oblivious to the toddler gripping onto his leg. He eyed the cake suspiciously, the colourful icing and decorations feeling like an assault on his eyes.
"What happened to a Vicky sponge? When did these things have to get all fancy?" He lifted a finger to touch the cake, but his hand was swatted away before he could reach - and ruin - it.
"It's the fashion now, old man, you need to get used to it," she smiled, raking her eyes up and down his body, her eyes narrowing. "Why aren't you dressed? It's nearly ten, Alf, party starts at twelve."
"Fuckin' hell, I'll go now," he groaned, reaching down to pick up Bessie from her place beside him, muttering to her as they left the kitchen together. "Your mum is so horrible on birthdays."
"Mum is horrible," Bessie laughed along, not really knowing what she was saying.
"It's not fair! Bessie got more presents than I did," Benjamin huffed, arms crossed over his chest from his seat on the sofa, his mother rubbing his shoulder soothingly.
"Will you stop your whining?" Alfie spoke to his son, he was sat cross legged on the floor, helping Bessie open the perfectly wrapped presents, the floor covered in floral wrapping paper.
His mother leaned in to her son's side, pulling him to her gently. "Yours were more expensive," she winked, earning a smile from the boy.
"A baby!" Bessie laughed as she opened her final present, the fabric doll with bright red hair and rosy cheeks making Alfie jump from his seat on the floor.
"Fuckin' hell," he took the doll from his daughter's hands, holding it up to show the other three people in the room. "It's uglier than Benny when he was born."
"Alfie!-"
"Dad-"
The mother and son chastised the man, the little girl throwing her head back as she laughed.
"We're the only one's with a sense of humour in this house, Bess," he muttered, handing the ugly doll back to her.
The doorbell rang at exactly twelve, and Alfie answered with Bessie dangling upside down in his arms.
"Oh, it's you," he said flatly when he saw the woman on the other side of the door.
"Bubbee!" Bessie shrieked, wriggling to get out of her father's grip, and he let her down as gently as possible, which wasn't easy considering she was upside down. Bessie slid ungracefully to the floor, picking herself up, unphased, throwing her arms around her grandmother.
"Happy birthday, Elisabeth," she smiled, and Alfie rolled his eyes, Bessie's head turned to him, a frown on her face.
"Who's Lisabeth?"
"Come in," Alfie turned before the woman could respond, speaking under his breath, "or fuck off home, I don't care."
"I hope I'm not too early," the older woman spoke as she trailed behind him. "I was told twelve."
Alfie ignored her, stalking into the kitchen where his wife was pulling some form of baked good out of the oven - she went overboard in his opinion.
"Your mother's here," he said in an overly cheerful tone, gesturing to where the woman stood behind him.
"Hello-"
The woman interrupted her daughter's greeting, moving to inspect the birthday cake that was now presented on a crystal stand on the kitchen table.
"Is this the cake?" She raised a brow, and Alfie lifted his head to the ceiling, taking a deep breath. "It's awfully fancy, you were lucky if you got a Victoria sponge."
His head snapped to his wife, who was now standing with a sly grin on her face.
"It's funny you should say that mum, because Alfie-"
"It ain't fancy at all," Alfie interrupted with a scoff. "Anyways, our Elisabeth deserves the best, don't ya, Lis?" He scopped his daughter up in his arms.
"Who is Lis?" She frowned.
The doorbell rang, breaking the awkward tension in the room.
"Thank fuck for that," Alfie sighed, carrying Bessie to answer the door for the second time.
In hindsight, inviting twenty people with twenty toddlers into their home wasn't the best idea. The house had been filled with screams of laughter and terror for the better part of two hours, and it was driving Alfie mental.
He didn't really like kids, he thought they were dirty, messy and stupid. His children were the exeption, they were clever and clean - even four month old Noah had better manners than some of these three year olds. If Bessie's birthday taught him anything, it was that the only children he liked were his own.
"You want a drink, Alf?" His wife's brother? cousin? asked him holding up a glass of whiskey from the other side of the living room.
"Don't touch it...mate," Alfie declined, shaking his head in disgust at the gesture. He was telling the truth, this day not only marked the birth of his daughter, but the last time he had a sip of alcohol - determined not to have a repeat of three years ago. He was proud himself for that, he had never been a big drinker, even in his younger days, but he never felt obligated to swear off the stuff until the day Bessie was born - whether it was because he felt genuine guilt, or the reoccuring nightmare regarding Ms Abrams and that Charles Dickens book, he wasn't too sure.
Bessie was asleep next to him on the sofa when his wife approached with a cup of tea, the little girl's mouth open, pink icing still smeared across her face, it was the first time she'd fallen asleep before her bedtime since the day she was born.
"Your family drinks too much," Alfie eyed the fathers in the corner of the room, growing more rowdy as the minutes ticked by, the expensive bottle of whiskey he bought his wife for his birthday now empty, barely a drop left.
She raised a brow at him, "is that a fucking joke? A Solomons is saying my family drinks too much?"
"We sell, we don't drink."
"You don't drink, your cousins on the other hand?" She shook her head as if she were trying to shake the thought of his family away. She had only met them a handful of times, at weddings or funerals, and she was happy to keep their interactions at a minimum, lest she receive another black eye from being shoved away during a drunken scuffle.
"My family are fun," Alfie protested, though there was no real fight in his tone. "Yours are drunk and stuck up."
"It's a three year old's birthday, Alfie. I'd take drunk and stuck up over hammered and violent."
There was a smile on her face as she spoke, his family was fun, though she would never admit it.
He kicked everyone out at five. throwing his arms up as he herded them out of the house, wishing them well and thanking them for coming, not caring about their response.
"Yeah, bye now, Rachel, by now," he said, closing the door on his wife's aunt before she could say anything in response. He slumped against the closed against the closed door, his forehead pressing into the cool wood, closing his eyes relishing the sound of silence.
"Alfie."
"Fuck," he shouted, spinning around to face his mother-in-law, who was stood directly behind him, her hat on her head and gloves on her hands. "You leavin' so soon?"
"It was nice seeing you, Alfie but I don't want to overstay my welcome," she offered him a strained smile.
"You?" His eyes widened, a fake smile on his face. "Never." He opened the door for her, not waiting until she had fully passed the threshold before slamming it shut.
The family were sat in the living room in silence, the chaotic mess surrounding them completely forgotten as they savoured the calmnmess that enveloped the house since the last guest left.
Bessie was still flat out at Alfie's side, Noah sleeping against his mother's chest.
"Dad?" Benjamin said from Alfie's other side, and Alfie opened one eye to glance at his son. "Is Bessie your favourite?"
"Now what makes you think that?" Alfie opened both of his eyes, sitting up carefully as to not wake the birthday girl.
"You say it all the time."
"Well...yeah, I suppose I do," he stroked his beard thoughtfully. "No, she isn't, because I don't have a favourite."
Benajamin offered his father a skeptical look, one that clearly said 'I don't believe you.'
Okay, the truth is, your sister needs more reassurance than you do," he gestured his son to lean in, whispering in his ear, "you're my real favourite."
Benjamin smiled a toothy smile, jumping up from the sofa and happily running up the stairs to his bedroom.
His wife grinned at him from the seat across from him.
"Liar," she whispered.
It was six o'clock when the doorbell rang, and everybody's head lifted to glance at the door from the dining room table.
"Now, who could that be?" Alfie rose dramatically from his chair, his eyes flickering in between his two oldest children, "I wonder if it's Bessie and Benjamin's big present." He strode towards the front door, ignoring his wife's panicked calling of his name.
"About time," he spat at Ollie, motioning for him to come inside, the present following behind the two men apprehensively.
The children were sat up straight in their seats when he returned to the dining room, a smile on his face, their hopeful expressions turning into ones of pure joy when they saw the four legged creature sat at his feet, panting happily.
"Please don't hurt me," Ollie whispered, his eyes fixed on the woman sat at the dining table, a scowl on her face.
"A doggy!" Bessie screamed, jumping down from her chair and running to kneel in front of the animal, Benjamin following her happily.
"It's fucking massive, Alfie," his wife spat, her arms crossed across her chest. "Where did it even come from?"
"Funny story that," he pointed to the Ollie, then to the dog. "Ollie found it, behind the bakery, getting beaten half to death by some cunt, poor thing...truly fucked up what happened to it...and Ollie brought it into the bakery," his wife glared at him but he continued on, "yesterday all this happened, why I was so late home."
"What happened to the owner, dad?" Benjamin asked, patting the happy dog on its head, laughing as she leaned in to lick his face gratefully.
"Well..." Alfie cocked his head to the side, "gave 'im a little warning, didn't I? He won't be harmin' no more dogs, let's put it that way."
"Can we keep her, mum?" Benjamin asked.
"Well I can't say no now, can I?" She huffed, crossing her arms across her chest, unmoved by her children's cheers.
"What's her name?" Bessie asked, hugging the dog around its broad shoulders.
"She don't have one, yet, thought the birthday girl should choose," he leaned down to whisper in her ear. "Don't she look a bit like bubbee?"
"Bubbee!" Bessie squealed, "Name's bubbee!" The dog lurched up at the sound of her new name, knocking the toddler back as it licked her face gently.
"Fucking hell!" Bessie laughed, and her mother's eyes widened.
Alfie's eyes locked with his wife's, and he pointed to the little girl.
"Favourite," he mouthed.

Like real people do
Alfie Solomons x Fem!OC
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[warnings: war in itself, mentions of blood, wounds and deaths, a lot of angst, suicidal thoughts, English isn't my first language
AN: I know Child 44 isn't set during WW1 and I should be banned from using such a gif. But it's close to the representation of young/soldier Alfie I have in mind, so let's say it is, right? It’s also your sign to watch (again) my fav edit in the world]
masterlist | previous part
— two
July 1917, somewhere in France
The sky was an eerie amber, like hell itself had descended upon earth. Shells exploded so close to the tent you had caught yourself freezing in horror a couple of times, even when the other nurses yelled at each other to keep going and never stop.
It had been your choice to come here, two years ago. Some generous act to show your parents you were a good person. The thing is, you’d prepared yourself to be working in a hospital ward in the city, not so close to the battlefield where you risked your own life every day trying to save others.
Coward. Wimp. You’d heard them all. Only now, you were stuck here.
It wasn’t that you didn’t like helping the men. You really did. It filled your heart with satisfaction every time one of them thanked you for saving their lives, shedding tears as though you were an angel. Reality was just harsh. You’d managed to stay over water for the first months, but witnessing such horrors was getting harder every day. How could you help the men when you could barely stay alive yourself?
Furiously blinking the tears away, you looked at the lifeless body in front of you and shouted at Ellen to get you someone, anyone, to take the young man away. Like assembly-line work–from what your dad had described back at home–the corpse was taken away, and you were met with another man bleeding to death, begging you to help him.
So you did. Everything blacked out as you focused on the crying Tommy, thinking only of your Andrew somewhere on the line. The man looked just like him—soft eyes, freckles over his nose, and dark hair. A faraway gaze and a voice that broke your heart and your soul, until you were unable to move or say something, and your legs seemed wholly unable to hold you up in your current state.
In the distance, the Chief Nurse shouted at Ellen to replace you. God knew how long you had been standing there, staring at the blood gliding off the scalpel and through the gaps in your fingers. It could have been Andrew’s. Your sweet Andrew, whom you’d promised to get to know better after the war ended. What if he’d already died, somewhere in the mud? Had he called for you?
“Out!” another voice yelled.
Now fully hyperventilating, you dropped the scalpel with the other bloodied tools, knocking over some supplies that fell on the floor.
Some unknown force pulled you out of the tent.
The breeze was gentle, but it helped you stay grounded. You pressed your palms to your eyelids and counted up to ten, sweat gliding down your forehead. The display of weakness was ridiculous, especially as some walked by without really seeing you. Everyone had their own issues to deal with, you knew it, but couldn't kindness be reciprocated for once?
So you drew in a deep breath and held it before exhaling slowly, just like Ellen had told you to do the first time. It'd never hit so hard, and it took forever to find some sort of peace again. Though you knew the only peace you’d meet was in the afterlife, wherever it was.
In the shocked calm of your brain, you considered it. How easy it would be to just… stop.
“Miss?”
Your head snapped up in fear, though it was only one of the Tommies. Freshly shaven, his eyes full of horror. And still, you wondered how he could stand so straight.
“Miss? You’re alright?”
Deciding to be honest, you shook your head and felt your body swaying a bit, landing on the ground. You stayed there, sitting on the mud, wondering if the cries reaching your ears were only a part of your imagination.
You hugged your legs and rested your forehead on your knees, not caring that you were soiling your uniform with mud. It was stained with blood anyway.
“The panic, eh? It grips your heart like a snake. Won’t let it go.”
Numb and unable to utter a word, you tilted your chin to look at the man who was sitting down next to you, clenching and unclenching your fists. He looked older than you, perhaps in his thirties. You’d noticed him in the ward a few days ago, but he hadn’t been as vocal as the others back then. A leg injury Ellen had taken care of, you reckoned.
“They said it’ll be over in a few months,” the man went on, strangely soothing. “But they’ve been sayin’ the same shit for years now, haven’t they? So the people like you and me don’t give up.”
His gaze boring into yours was an invitation to be honest, as though telling you that you were safe with him.
So you were honest.
"I won’t last.”
“Ya will, love,” he elbowed you gently, slightly leaning closer to you. “Ya will. I’ll come and find ya, and we’ll have a short conversation every time, yeah? As much as we can.”
For the first time in over a year, you smiled. Not a full grin like you’d offered people at home, but it was still something. And if there was something you had never forgotten, it was that exact moment of hope, as small and stupid as it sounded. Nurses often fell for the sweet and relieving words of the men, but you’d never considered it could feel so nice. Cheerful lads were rare, after all.
"Right."
Even though you weren’t sure you’d see him the next week, you gave a small nod in agreement. It was bad to think he could cure your loneliness, but what else could you do? Andrew was… somewhere else. Probably dead, or writing an apology for not sending letters.
A small pause ensued. The man glanced over his shoulder, pulling at the tight collar of his khaki uniform. He looked terribly hot and uncomfortable, and there was nothing you could do about it.
“Ya need to think about something that reminds you of home, eh?”
It took you a second to realise he was still addressing you.
“Well, I…” you trailed off, ashamed of how weak you sounded. “I wanted to think about my sweetheart, you know, but I don’t even know where he is. I haven’t got any letter in two weeks. I’m worried.”
“He must be thinkin’ of you somewhere,” he replied without a doubt. “The postmen aren’t used to workin’ so much, you see. Workin’ all day long–that’s a first for them.”
Chuckling softly, you hugged your legs a bit tighter. “I’m glad they’re here, though.”
“Me too, me too. Don't get me wrong.”
You shot him a smile, staring at his expression as he watched you back. He looked both gentle and… impressive, came to think of it. Still, you appreciated his desire to make you feel better.
“Sadie!”
Right on cue, one of the postmen sauntered over to you, holding up an envelope that looked like it had crossed the trenches and been stomped on in the mud before getting here.
“Letter for you, darling,” Rob gave you the usual crooked grin, saluting quickly the man next to you.
You took it from him, squinting as you tried to decipher who the sender was. Your mother. Like every time she wrote to you, a sense of unease filled you. Although your brother's disability had prevented him from coming to the front, you always imagined the worst.
“Thanks, Rob.”
You tore the envelope without waiting, exhaling in relief as you read that everything was fine at home, the worry that had been gnawing at you finally lifting. The letter was folded and slipped into your pocket.
The man's thick accent jolted you out of your thoughts, his eyes still trained on you.
“Good news, yeah?”
“They’re not bad,” you replied, glancing at Rob who was now handing another nurse a small package.
You wished you'd got one.
Beside you, the soldier was silent, probably feeling you needed some time. But the thought of going back inside was scarier than usual, and you were desperate to make the moment last.
“You said I’d need to think of something that reminds me of home. What helps you?”
“Bread.”
That one-word response had you chortling. “Bread? Are you a cook by any chance?”
“Nah, something wiser,” the man tried for a smile too, though it looked strained. “I’m planning on opening my bakery, see?”
How many men had told you about their plans, only to die the day after?
“Why, that sounds lovely.”
“I’ve bought the place, right, and…” he trailed off in thought, running a hand through his short hair. “I’ve been waitin' ever since.”
“I hope you make it,” you told him sincerely, frowning at the muddy men running into the tent.
It seemed that another horde of wounded soldiers had arrived. It made your pulse race.
“Alfie Solomons.”
Spotting his hand stretched in your direction, you met his gaze again and shook it. His fingers tracked tiny sparks across your skin until they pulled away, maybe a bit too fast.
“Sadie Murray.”
The image of him glancing up at you as he lighted a cigarette was engraved in your mind. The beginning of a smile on his lips, and the way he ground the white stick under his shoe when you walked inside the tent. It was hard to ignore how your heart thumped under the weight of his eyes tracking you, though it should have been your Andrew comforting you there.
Through the explosions and the daily horrid cries of pain, the first meeting with Alfie Solomons was the one thing that kept you going for the next months.

MOMENTS . ALFIE SOLOMONS
Tumblr media
summary: alfie's third child is about to be born, and he reflects on the births of his eldest children. warnings: pregnancy, childbirth, traumatic birth (but it's all okay), strained familial relationships, angst (not as bad as usual), swearing, murder, drinking, unedited wordcount: 2.4k a sequel to home but can be read as a standalone. <3
Alfie called his wife's name from the bottom of the stairs, his exhasperated shout echoing up the staircase and into the master bedroom. There was no response to his call, save for a pained scream that he was almost certain was not directed at him.
He breathed a sigh, climbing the stairs to at a time and knocking on the bedroom door, his wife's cries muffled by the heavy oak door. He called her name again, louder this time. "The kids are bein' fuckin' mental, I don't know what to do with them."
The door swung open, revealing a very angry old woman. Ms Abrams was a stern woman, she had delivered hundreds of babies, including all of the Solomons children, his wife insisting she was the best midwife they could ask for - she was also one of the few people Alfie was genuinely scared of. So scared he had considered stopping getting his wife pregnant just so he'd never have to see her severe, wrinkled face ever again.
"Mr Solomons, your wife is in labour, I will not have a repeat of last time," the woman hissed at him, swatting him away with a blemished hand.
"I don't know what to do with them," Alfie said, desperately, his hands thrown out at his sides. Ms Abrams gave him a pointed look that caused him to shrink back slightly, memories of her beating him with a heavy Charles Dickens book during Bessies birth flashing in his mind.
"You're their father, Mr Solomons - figure it out," she slammed the door in his face before he could protest, and he was left to figure it out alone.
"Dad, Bessie got into your office again!" Benjamin called from the bottom of the stairs, the giggles of his little sister following his voice.
When Benjamin had been born, eight years ago, Alfie had been mortified by the entire experience. His wife had woken up in the middle of the night, in unbearable pain, gripping onto his arm so tightly that in the haze of sleep, he had reached for the gun he always kept in his bedside table.
When she had told him to call for the midwife, he had done so without hesitation, and when there was no answer, he had sent Ollie to collect her and bring her to the house personally - it was a terrible first impression for both Alfie and Ms Abrams.
When the old woman finally did arrive, she had instructed Alfie to leave.
"Go to the pub or something, it's what most men do."
But Alfie was not most men, and had insisted he be close by, just in case. It had not impressed Ms Abrams, who had rolled her eyes at the gangster as if he were a spoiled child, before telling him to wait downstairs for however long it would take.
It was three hours in when Ms Abrams came running down the stairs, hurriedly asking him where the phone was, and he directed her to it wordlessly. He asked to her what was wrong, but she had ignored him, speaking into the phone in a tone that Alfie knew too well - panicked.
His head went fuzzy as he watched the woman clutch the phone to her ear, speaking in a hushed tone to whoever was on the other end.
"We need a doctor here immediately," she had said, and Alfie had started for the stairs before either of them could blink. He ignored the protests of the older woman, rushing up the stairs and into the bedroom too fast for her to catch up and stop him.
He didn't know what he was expecting - maybe blood, maybe his wife lying lifelessly on the bed - but there was no red stains on the sheet, and she was lying on the bed, very much alive, though pale and tired.
"Alfie," she breathed out, her head flopping back on the headboard. "What's happening?"
He had no response, he just lingered in the doorway helplessly.
What was happening?
"Get out," Mrs Abrams pushed past him, a man in a nice suit following behind her, giving the scared husband a polite smile as he squeezed past.
"No," Alfie spat at her. "You tell me what's going on."
Neither of them responded, sharing a worried look, before the man kneeled at the bottom of the bed, ensuring his wife that everything was going to be fine.
Ms Abrams glanced at Alfie, and with a heavy sigh, placed a hand on his shoulder to push him out of the room, closing the door halfway so she could speak to him through the crack.
"The baby is in distress," she said, holding a hand up when Alfie went to interrupt her. "It'll be fine, Mr Solomons, the doctor is here now. I'm certain it will all be fine."
But Alfie could read the midwife's face.
She wasn't certain - how could she be?
Eveything worked out, Benjamin Solomons was born one hour later, his cries filling the house, and Alfie shot up from where he sat on the floor outside the bedroom, waiting for the door to open.
"Your son is here, Mr Solomons," Ms Abrams said, smiling for the first time since he had met her all those hours ago. He nodded at her, pushing into the room as the midwife and doctor left, not paying any mind to them as he approached the bed where his wife lay, with a now quiet baby in her arms.
Alfie had seen babies before, though they were at least a few weeks old, cleaned and dressed properly, ready to meet strangers. This one, though, was purple and swollen, with his eyes scrunched shut and his lips pursed as he took in his new surroundings.
Benjamin was an ugly baby - but he was theirs.
"Bessie, please stop," Alfie sighed at his daughter as she sped around his study, throwing pieces of paper in the air, laughing when her dad would try and catch them before they hit the floor.
She was a fast two year old, she seemed to have endless energy that didn't burn out until the very end of the day, Alfie swore she tried to tire everybody else out first.
The knock at the door interrupted Alfie's protests, and he gave up, scooping the little girl into his arms and making his way to the front door, stopping in the foyer at the sight of his mother-in-law greeting her grandson and stepping into the house.
Her eyes flickered from Benjamin to Alfie, and the smile fell from her lips, pursing into a look of disgust.
"Alfie," she nodded, scoffing when the man ignored her, spinning on his heel as his daughter laughed, reaching her arms out to her 'bubbee'.
He was sat at the kitchen table with Bessie, pretending to listen to her babbling when the woman walked in, hand in hand with Benjamin - they had always gotten along - and it pissed Alfie off like nothing else.
"How long has it been?" She asked, pulling off her gloves and sitting in the chair opposite him.
"Four hours," Benjamin said proudly - he had been counting.
"Might be a while yet," she sighed, turning to her grandson. "Why don't you take your sister to the shop and get yourselves some sweets while we wait?" She was already reaching into her purse to pull out some coins before Alfie could protest.
"Sweeties!" Bessie laughed from her seat, jumping down and pulling her big brother by his hand out of the door.
"I'd appreciate it if you didn't do that," Alfie grumbled, crossing his arms tightly over his chest.
"They're just sweets, Alfie, it won't do them any harm," she waved a dismissive arm. "Besides, it looked like you could use a break," she let her eyes trail across the room - he would admit, it had been tidier.
"Surprised to see you, don't usually show up for these things," he was challenging her, and from the way she sat up in her seat, she was ready for it.
"I'm her mother, Alfie, she asked me to be here."
"Well she's emotional," he shrugged calmly. "Pregnancy brings out her meloncholy side."
"I'm trying to be a better mother, I would appreciate it if you let me."
"Yeah," Alfie scoffed, "too little too late for me, love."
"Glass houses, Alfie," the woman glared at him. "You've hardly been an outstanding husband."
"Never threw her out on the streets, though, have I? Let me tell you somethin', you can see her as often as you like but if you dare come into my home and try and poison her, or my children, against me" he leaned forward in his chair. "Your body will be floating in the thames before those kids get home from the shop."
She seemed taken aback by his comment, and it made Alfie want to throttle her, if it wasn't for his wife upstairs, he probably would. She opened her mouth to respond, but was interrupted by the two children running back into the house, the front door slamming shut behind them.
"Dad, she stole my cola cubes," Benjamin whined, pointing to his younger sister, who had a sly grin on her face and her hands tucked behind her back.
"I'm going to go and check on your mother," she spoke to her grandchildren, offering them a smile as she left the kitchen.
"Is mummy hurt, daddy?" Bessie asked, climbing onto his lap, a white bag of cola cubes in her hand.
"Yeah," Alfie nodded, "but not for long. It'll be over soon."
Bessie's birth had gone much smoother than Benjamin's had - from what Alfie could remember.
He hadn't been home when his wife had gone into labour, he had been at the bakery, dealing with business that could not be delegated to anybody else.
The was a rat in the bakery, and after months of searching his men had finally figured out who it was. The phone rang in his office incessantly, but nobody heard it over the sound of the man's screams from the main floor.
Rats didn't die quick. That was his policy when it came to such matters, and this day was no exception. It had taken hours for the man's body to finally give up, for his body to slump on the floor with little fight left in him, and that's when Alfie shot him in the head - like a lame horse.
It was divine retribution in a way. This man died while Alfie's daughter was being born - there was a clear winner in the scenario.
He had drank rum from the distillery after, the phone had stopped ringing and it was quiet again, and he took a moment to himself, drinking half the bottle before he decided it was time to call it a night.
He didn't drink the rum out of guilt for what he had done, nor had he done it in celebration - he just needed a moment of silence, a moment to cleanse his mind of what he had done before he went home and hugged his son and kissed his wife.
He had come home stumbling, Benjamin was already in bed, fast asleep and the house was eerily quiet - until he stumbled into the bedroom that is.
The screams were delayed when they hit his ears, a frown on his face when his bleary eyes lifted from the carpet to his bed, where his wife was sat up, a screaming infant in his arms and an unimpressed look on her face, the midwife stood at her bedside seemingly shaking with rage.
"Fuckin' hell, you had another one?" He laughed, throwing his head back. He was still laughing when Ms Abrams approached him a book from the bedside table in her hands, delivering a smack to the side of his head, knocking his hat onto the floor. "For fuck's sake," Alfie groaned, cradling his ear with his hand, but the woman didn't stop, hitting him repeatedly with the book until he backed out of the room.
"Go and wash the smell of rum off of you and get youself together, man," she hissed once she had him backed into the wall outside the bedroom.
He didn't argue with her, shuffling into the bathroom before she could get another hit in.
"Her name is Elisabeth, by the way," she called out after him.
Bessie was finally in bed when Mrs Abrams came into the kitchen.
"You have another son, Mr Solomons," she said plainly, her coat already on her shoulders and her bag in the crook of her elbow.
Alfie got up from his seat and nodded greatfully at her before he rushed for the stairs, glaring at his mother-in-law as she passed him, heading for the door.
Benjamin was already in the room when he got there, kneeling on the bed to gaze at his new baby brother in wonder, and Alfie approached cautiously, coming to stand at the side of the bed, placing a hand on his wife's shoulder and looking down at the baby.
It didn't look much different to the other two when they had been born, it had the same purple and swollen face, the same scrunched up expression on its face, though he was much smaller than Benjamin had been.
"What's his name, mum?" Benjamin asked bouncing up and down on the bed, trying to contain his giddiness.
"I think your dad should choose this time," she said, looking up at her husband with a dazed smile on her face. Benjamin's head turned to his father expectantly, and Alfie froze. He had had no part in the naming of his first two children, their names chosen before he had a chance to process they were even born, it had annoyed him until this very moment.
"What about Isaac?" He offered eventualy, and mother and son shared a thoughtful look.
"No," they spoke in unison.
"Fine," Alfie sighed. "Benny? What do you want to name him?"
"Noah," Benjamin said proudly, and the husband and wife shared a look, nodding together in silent agreement.
"Benny, go to bed, now." Alfie spoke, ignoring the frown on his son's face as he clambered off the bed.
"I heard you threatened to throw my mother in the Thames," she said when the door closed behind Benjamin.
Alfie shushed her, moving to sit on the bed. "Don't talk about her, Noah's listening."
Her eyes began to droop shut and Alfie gently took the infant from her arms, holding the little thing bundled in a yellow blanket, watching as his eyes began to close too.
Alfie was the only one who didn't sleep that night, keeping a hold of his youngest son until the sun came up.
