Life as a ‘celebrity’ in a foreign country
The new experiences and opportunities here in Chile just keep coming. In the last two weeks I’ve co-judged my school’s Independence Day cooking competition, appeared on the Radio and experienced the delights of teachers day.
Fiestas Patrias which I’ve spoken about in a previous entry is the most important celebration of the year in Chile. My school had to postpone it’s own Fiestas Patrias activities due to the earthquake in September, but plans could not simply be shelved for next year. Many students had spent weeks practicing the traditional Cueca dancing in advance of the big day while classes and their parents had planned their stall with traditional Chilean food.
So a shortened day of classes two Thursdays ago left ample opportunity to celebrate. The cancha (covered multi-use sports area) was set up with stalls for all the classes in the school around the outside. This left space for the stage at the front from where the event was presented and the centre for dancing. Like any other acto this commenced with the national anthem of which I’m beginning to learn the words by heart. This was followed by an impressive hour and a half of Cueca dances by a large number of students including some alumnitos from nearby escuelas (primary schools). I should give a shout out at this point to fellow English teacher Pablo for an excellent job co-presenting.
My role which I only found out of course 15 mins prior was to be co-judge of the authentic Chilean dish competition. Each class had to both cook and then present verbally and or in writing the ingredients and method to create the dish. Of course being such an expert in Chilean food and die hard carnivore I was perfectly qualified (not) for this role. But not wanting to let my school down I got stuck in and sampled what I have no doubt was some very well cooked meat. My co-judges and I were particularly impressed though with a simple, yet great tasting soup but more importantly (perhaps) they presented me with my own leaflet of the recipe in English. And with that they secured first place. I was also particularly pleased to show my lack of bias by choosing one of the only classes in the school I don’t teach!
The following Saturday I managed a long anticipated trip to see a friend I made during the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. He lives roughly halfway between Curicó and Santiago in a medium sized town called Graneros (or Rio de Graneiro as he likes to call it!). Graneros is in the O´Higgins region, which is known as being the home of Chile’s finest wine. Not only did I manage a glass of wine but also some special Chocolate flavoured beer originating from somewhere in the Los Lagos region of Chile. His friends cooked some cool vegetarian empanadas for me with esparagus and cheese (and another variety which escapes me) and I had a great opportunity to practice my Spanish.
Sunday was a fairly early start for a 10k race in Talca followed by an Asado and tour of my host brother’s really nice campus. It probably beats York in fact on most counts apart from the size of the lake. Lots of greenery and wildlife and one of the best performing universities in Chile I’m told (photo to follow of me outside the Economics department). We also managed a quick trip up Talca´s awesome Cerro which has some incredible views!
The day before teachers day was an opportunity for all head teachers (what we call tutors in the UK) to spend some quality time with their students over an extended breakfast. I managed a shortened and adjusted lesson with one of my Segundo medio classes featuring two who wants to be a millionaire quizzes on the subjects of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and British television. I was amazed by the HP expertise of one or two of the students.
So then time for the acto, cue national anthem, some fantastic vocals from students and some moving words about how much students value all their teachers. It was also the chance for some of the cool 2 medio students I teach to show off their DJing and MCing skills. All teachers received a gift – me a very nice pen. I’m told this is a traditional gift and in honor of a teacher’s superior knowledge and to allow him/her to carry on their job.
I got a late invite to the municipal education authority’s teachers day ceremony attended by over 400 teachers which was a very formal occasion and took me somewhat by surprise. But the biggest surprise for all of us was the principle turning up late only to receive a special award for 30 years of service!
On teachers day itself I returned to the coast for the schools traditional day trip. Only 9 teachers came in the end but I was impressed that one of these was the Principle. Two Asados, some football on the beach and I even managed a really nice walk to the next deserted beach.
I was approached a number of weeks ago by one of the teachers at school about appearing on his Sunday afternoon radio show. The day I had been dreading finally arrived. After completing a more than 10k 10k race which was held to celebrate the city’s 272nd birthday I hurried over to the offices of Radio Inolvidables for an informal interview mixed with some music from Lulu and Erik Clapton.
As many of you will know this is not the sort of opportunity I would usually seek out. But here in Chile there is a big culture of helping people out so I didn’t want to let a fellow teacher down plus it was a good opportunity for me to practice my Spanish. I fielded questions on why I came to Chile, my mission at school and what the differences were between life in Chile and the UK. Apart from an embarrassing hiccup of failing to retranslate a Lulu song name in Spanish back into English, I did very well according to my head-teacher.
Yesterday saw one final activity to mark teachers day. The asistentes sociales put on a very nice little reception for us including an impressive photo slide show, another musical performance from students and probably one of the biggest non-wedding cakes I have ever seen! We definitely should have more celebrations like this in the UK both inside and outside of school (Chile observes the day of the firefighter, secretary and many more).
Finally it’s about time I shared some chilenismos
Al tiro – Literally means at the gunshot or very quickly/immediately. However this is somewhat of a running joke in Chile as it is more often used to refer to about 5/10/15 minutes or even half an hour later as I have found out on more than one occasion.
Cuatico – can mean obsessive, over reactive or entertaining depending on the context. Not yet one I’m comfortable using.
¿Cachai? – do you understand? or are you following me? Thrown in often while someone is giving a long rambling explanation.
Po – not so much a modismo as simply a bonus sound that Chileans like to make. Siiiiiipo, nopo and yaaaaaaapo. Yaaaapo actually means ‘get a **** move on’ and can often be heard in the classroom when a student takes it upon themselves to help you with classroom management without saying callete which is shut up.
When one of my octavo kids was attempting to speak to me in some fairly unintelligible Spanish, a segundo medio who happened to be nearby piped up with ‘él habla ingles po´!
It is well known that Chileans like using of the diminutive. (Equivalent in English ´the li’lle baby, li’lle dog’) A lad in one of my tercero classes walks into the room sometimes and says calientito having come in from the cold/wet outside (I hasten to add this is before my English only policy kicks in). I’m yet to work out if he is referring to it being only ‘a little bit hot’ in the classroom or ´how great that it’s hot in here’. A teacher in the school is referred to as Carlito while small objects are reffered to as chiquitito which by my calculations is actually the diminutive ‘squared’.
That’s all folks.
