   Lyra was an idiot.
That’s what Silver thought but as it would turn out. He was a bigger idiot than she was. And he didn’t know who he hated more for it: her or himself.
The confession came like a gut punch for Silver. It just full bodied him with guilt. It completely re-contextualised what he saw in that girl.  He saw an idiot, once upon a time, and now he saw her for what she was. So painfully good-natured and kind-hearted that she didn’t want to see anyone suffer.
Lyra wasn’t an idiot: she was a pacifist and he was the reason that she was a pacifist at all.
Silver recalled meeting her that fateful day outside the lab and then again on the outskirts of Cherrygrove. He remembered seeing her big, foofy hat, like a massive marshmallow, before he saw anything else, like her hair or the colour of her eyes, least of all that doughy expression that she wore all smiley as she came snooping around the corner and he told her to buzz off.
   So, she did.
She turned herself around, spun on her heel, and marched off. Her arms swinging, singing a little ditty to herself as she, marched off and right into the laboratory entrance. From his perch by the far-side window, Silver watched carefully as some kind of conversation unfolded.
He didn’t need to hear what they were saying to figure it out and for some reason, it really fired him that some bumpkin airhead was in such good favour with the Professor. Who, by the way, was a total dope. He yammered on and on and on until the moment of truth. The moment that Silver had been waiting impatiently for.
The Professor unveiled three, rare Pokémon and Silver wanted his mitts on one. He watched as that girl – Lyra – all but went eenie, meenie, minie, moe in front of the shiny, new PokeBalls. It absolutely infuriated Silver but as luck would have it. She would pick a perfect fit for herself: a Chikorita.
Now, with her new companion out of its ball and beside her, she marched off again to Silver couldn’t care less and he went in to snag a partner of his own. He picked a perfect fit for himself, as well: a flaming Cynadquil. Sure, it was kind of a cutesy puffball now but once its fangs and claws grew in with a couple evolutions, it would be a vicious partner for Silver.
Already he could see its ferocious nature coming through because as luck would have it. He and Cyndaquil’s very first battle would be against none other than that goody-two-shoes errand girl.
“My name’s Lyra and let’s have a good battle, yeah?” she called out from across the field. Her hand was stuck out as though she were expecting Silver to shake it, as though totally oblivious to the distance between them, as well.
Silver grunted. Entirely uninterested in getting to know her or anything about her. All that mattered was to see that chumpy little Chikorita of hers go down in embers and his Cyndquil did not disappoint, following every barked order to a tee. It tackled into its foe without restraint, knocking it over and over, driving it into the ground until it could not get up again. No matter how Lyra screamed and pleaded with Silver and his Cyndaquil to go easy on them or some kind of drivel like that.
It was an easy victory but a satisfying one.
Silver saw what he wanted in his own partner Pokémon – a tool, a weapon – and so did Lyra, apparently, because the next time that they passed each other by. Things were different. It was just a glimpse, an overhead conversation in a fire hazard of a creaking building, the Bellsprout Tower, but where Silver was scolded as he huffed off after beating the master of it, Lyra was praised.
Something, something, a unique battle style, pfft, whatever. It was all the prattling of a senile old man. Silver didn’t care at all. Not even when he hears straight from the Ponyta’s mouth that she had taken on some Team Rocket grunts and won. She was clearly all gas and no go.
Silver knew exactly what Lyra was. An idiot. She was a wimp and that showed through in their second battle as well. She didn’t attack at all. Not once. Instead, Lyra employed the most stupid and roundabout strategies available to her to just stall until, well, Silver’s not proud of this but she won.
Only because he was still so dumbstruck by how she battled. Poison Powder followed by all the Growls her now evolved Bayleef had. It was stupid but it worked and it was a bitter loss for Silver. She only won because of luck. That’s what he thought to himself as he stroked his ego and spat obscenities at the loser Pokémon who had been out-manoeuvred by a stupid little girl and her stupid little Pokémon.
Except… only… it kept happening… Silver kept losing and he kept losing to none other than Lyra. He didn’t even want to give her the satisfaction of calling her his rival but the truth was, she was the only one who could go toe to toe with him and his Pokémon. Wild Pokémon cowered before their might until even the long grass refused to shake for him where he dominated. Trained Pokemon whimpered and whined whilst their pathetic Trainers cried when they lost.
With all these wins under his belt, Silver was a terror and a scourge. Everything that he could hope to be as he continued along his own quest to eliminate Team Rocket, to destroy everything that his Father stood for and yet. He kept losing to Lyra.
She was the epitome of everything that he hated. She was mushy-gushy tenderness and care, with a glass half-full kind of outlook on life. It wasn’t fair.
Silver should have had his life handed to him on, guess what, a silver platter and yet. He was abandoned by it all and that hatred calcified inside of him. He would simply get what he wanted by taking it. Just like with that Cyndaquil he had stolen from that sap of a Professor and everything else he needed to get where he wanted to go in life.
And then there was Lyra. Sweet, naive, idiotic Lyra.
She seemed like she had everything on that damn silver platter. The Professor’s favour, a good mind for battling, despite her quirks and eccentricities of it, the affection of Gym Leaders who would call her a friend, partner Pokémon who understood her soul perfectly, relaying their odd orders and so on. Yet she was taking this hard way around it that Silver could never understand.
   Until now.
Lyra was now on the threshold of the Elite Four. She was, in all likelihood, about to become the new Champion of Johto, and it was all thanks to him, or so she reckoned with a forgiving, even humorous, smile. He mightn’t want to call her a rival but Lyra was very happy to call him a rival.
He just wanted to know so, Silver sat down and Lyra followed, his hand curled into a fist as he just got out with it, “What the hell is wrong with your battling style? It drastically changed between our first and second battles and I don’t know how but it's racking up more wins than mine but my wins… They don’t feel good anymore.” Silver confessed, frustrated.
“Hm, well, there is a little bit of a story to it.” Lyra replied, a little awkward. She didn’t want to look at Silver.
Even so, she sat next to him. She took a breath and Silver wasn’t sure if he would ever live down the regret that he felt as Lyra regaled a story to him, where he was both the protagonist and the villain.
“I didn’t realise how scary battling could be until I met you, Silver,” she gently explained, fidgeting by toeing the tip of her shoe in the dirt as they sat inside Victory Road together, “and when I saw how scary it was to lose… It changed me. I didn’t want to be anything like you.”
“I wouldn’t want to be like me either.” Silver miserably replied.
Lyra put her hand on his shoulder, gave it bit of a rub, “You’re a good trainer, Silver, just a horrible friend to your Pokémon.”
“Gee, thanks.” Silver rolled his eyes but then he sighed. “Save the speech. I’ve heard it all before but… you're right.”
   “I… am?” Lyra blinked.
“You have always been right.” Silver said, heavy. “I’m sorry. I’ve treated you and a whole lot of other people very poorly.”
“Well, you can start here by making amends.” Lyra said and her hand moved from Silver’s shoulder to where he kept his PokeBalls holstered.
Silver didn’t know how but she chose the exact right one, the one belonging to his Typhlosion. She let his Pokémon out of its PokeBall and in front of them both, where they were perched on a rocky outcrop, Silver’s Typhlosion opened its maw and growled at them.
“Deep down, you're a good boy, aren’t you?” Lyra cooed at the Typhlosion, she reached out her hands and waited.
Silver watched, with bated breath and a frown, as after a few seconds that passed, Typhlosion realised that Lyra just wanted to pet it. It honestly hurt Silver’s heart to watch as his partner Pokémon receive affection for the first time in its entire life - or life under Silver’s stewardship of it. His stomach twisted, especially as Typhlosion trilled sweetly for Lyra as she gave it the biggest scratch behind its ears and toyed with the fat either side of its cheeks.
“Yeah, no bad Pokémon, only bad trainers.” Lyra quipped.
   “Hey.” Silver cut in, brusque.
Lyra turned her head and poked her tongue out, “Then prove to me you can be a good boy as well then. Next time we meet, your Golbat had better be fully evolved, mister.”
“I’ll try.” Silver murmured. “I’m not good at it, though, being nice, it doesn’t come naturally to me. Not like it does to you.”
“You’ll figure it out. Be awkward, be sincere, and I think it’ll be fine.” Lyra said as she stretched out her legs, tapped her toes.
   “Thanks.” Silver muttered.
“Good. Well, I best be going.” Lyra said and she got up with a cute, little grunt. She then flashed Silver a smile, “Wish me luck, yeah?”
“You don’t need luck.” Silver said.
“Oh, you’re a smoother talker when you want to be,” Lyra teased as she spun herself around, playfully, on the heel of her foot, “but thanks and don’t forget,” she then leaned in close to Silver, to whisper in his ear: “being nice to others includes yourself, too.”
Lyra pecked Silver’s cheek, just briefly, enough to fluster them both and then she retreated. She continued to her full body kinetic fidgeting as she put more space between them.
“Anyways, you used to scare me. Like, a lot.” Lyra continued, a blush to her face. “But bit by bit, every time I won over you in a battle, I chipped you down and now, you're not that scary to me. I hope to see you around. For once.” She giggled impishly, her hands behind her back, stretching.
“I hope to see you around again soon, too. For once.” Silver echoed back to her, his tone bittersweet. Sombre, even.
With a grimace, he watched Lyra leave. His Typhlosion chirped at her and he was embarrassed that with just that, Lyra had tamed his Pokémon far better than he had but maybe he deserved that. He didn’t deserve anything else. Least of all her forgiveness.
It was entirely possible through the Butterfree Effect that if hadn’t destroyed her so badly in that very first battle, she mightn’t be walking into the crownland of the Elite Four right now but even so. Lyra didn’t deserve how he had tormented her so sadistically that early on, even how it became beleaguered with every loss.
To have her forgiveness, to have her looking forward to their next meeting, that didn’t agree well with the guilt that Silver was now stewing with and so felt like a punch to the gut.

Meiji Lenticular Johto Era Puzzle Cards
Each piece is a lenticular card showing the pre-evolution and final evolution of 8 different Pokemon. They are all formed together to create a whole picture. Unfortunately, each piece is individually wrapped as well as wrapped a second time together, so my apologies for the blurry scanning. I’m not sure when this particular puzzle was released, but it was probably between 2000-2002 when the Johto episodes aired in Japan.
Since Meiji is a food company in Japan, each piece was probably also released with candy of some sort in stores.

Plm: at some point, bakugo gets a cyndquil that eventually evolves into a typhlosion
The idea of Bakugou's first pokemon being a starter appeals to me

Sammurot is visually a samurai, but samurai were primarily archers, so decidueye, and tyhplosion is a badger (there is a samurai/shogun? Badger Yokai) and it’s name literally means military general/shogun in Japanese
Legends: Arceus is actually a LARP sim but they forgot to tell Cyndquill

Bulba is the objective fave. Not actually sure if i have ever played Gen 2 but if I have Cyndquill is the bestof them def. Emerald was the first Pokemon game I ever played and I had no idea what I was doing and these days I'll pick Mudkip every time; that said, that Treeko's name was Arrow and he was my first Pokemon ever <3 Piplup and Oshawott definitely got hit with "I don't want a fish!!!" but also Oshawott is one of the objectively best starters in the entire franchise. Look at him, he's an otter! Fennekin I wanted to play long before I actually could and was obssed with. Rowlet was a mistake (I'm so sorry but that ghost shackle move is SO USELESS it soured me on the whole evo line )= ) and also separately I'm solidly a Poplio girl now. Soble is perfect and my baby and I don't like the other two's evolved forms.
Wrt the latest gen, the grass cat is tentatively the favorite right now but I used to think the same about Litten and then its evolved forms happened.

Reply with your first starter choice for each gen you’ve played!! It’s tricky for me since I’ve played gen two and three over and over again and NOW I’m more of a chikorita / mudkip gal. Jury’s still out for me on the new gen but I think I usually pick water types as starters just because I’m so BORED by all the fish pokemon
