Fall/ Winter Ride Essentials: Riding Vests
Image of My Hincapie Cycling Vest Once the weather turns cooler, you might add-on to your current cycling kit of a jersey and bib shorts. You’ll probably add knee or leg warmers and arm warmers or a long-sleeved jersey. Sometimes, those add-ons aren’t enough, though, to shield you from a cold wind. That’s when a riding vest comes in handy. What’s the Purpose of a Cycling/ Riding Vest? Image of…

cassie sandsmark star jorts from issue #23 of yj98 you have always been famous to me
(before pic + additional photos and unnecessary ramblings under the cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made these jorts in 22 hours over the course of 3 days! pure willpower via my love for cassie sandsmark because I am a total novice in sewing and i am still not very good at it. (i really just combined various tutorials and improvised on measurements and then regretted improvising measurements later on).
I thrifted these jeans last year for cassie vibes (even though I had already made her star-spangled red bellbottoms at that point) and wasn't a fan of how they fit + I couldn't figure out how to style them. I enjoyed sewing in the panels to flare them out and then everything else (cargo pockets and sewing in stars) was hell <3
the pockets are not placed well (nor are they particularly well-made), the hem is uneven, the stars are quite janky (and I think I stitched on too many), I probably stabbed my fingers a million times, and I am so in love with them

'omg dazai treating akutagawa like he did literally makes no sense he just did it because he sucks and i hate him for it'
can we. have a conversation about this without being fucking stupid please. yes dazai fucks him up and its really awful and sucks so bad. yes it isnt necessary for akutagawa's improvement. but like everything with bsd, theres nuance to it that you are ignoring.
the initial meeting between dazai and aku is aku wanting a reason to live and dazai wanting to give him one. a repeat of what mori wanted to give him. (this does not mean those two relationships are the exact same. please guys. please things are different sometimes). Now. dazai assumes the way to give aku a desire to live is to give him purpose. he ISNT training aku to be a mindless killer - thats literally the Opposite of what hes doing. he wants aku to be More than a sword without a sheath. hes teaching aku to be efficient. not just killing people, being smart about it. being what the mafia wants. giving him a purpose through making him useful.
it also probably comes back to the fact that dazai is WRONG about what made him want (barely) to live. he believes it comes from being surrounded by death, thus making the mafia the perfect place for him. booo hes stupid boo hes wrong!! bc it doesnt. hes bored by it and he says that directly in dark era. that he thought being around death would content him with life and it HASNT. bc he was wrong in fifteen. he didnt suddenly become interested in life bc he was doing violence and masterminding for the mafia. it was bc Someone intrigued him.
dazais whole problem stems from apathy, he wants to die because hes Bored with life. nothing interests him. Except people. so he meets chuuya in fifteen and is Interested by him. and that happens to coincide with his first mission for the mafia so he thinks its the death aspect. but it isnt. and we see this repeated with the other people he cares about (oda and ango most obviously). dazais motivations for his plans arent fucking around w death for his own personal entertainment. its looking after his friends. thats the same no matter what canon material ur looking at. and that same reason is why hes alive.
his misinterpretation of that leads him to be wrong abt aku too. aku needs people, he needs a gentle hand to develop best (beast). dazai says himself that aku needs to find someone to be his sheath and that dazai cant be that person (he doesnt know how to be). ofc, the sheath is eventually atsushi and now that we see aku gain strength both with his ability, with strategic thinking, and just emotionally in general its bc of the development hes gone under w atsushi. but guess what? this is more to the thing of bsd being based on human connection. dazais alive bc of the people he cares for. aku does better around people he cares for.
this isnt to say dazais actions are at all justified, and thats not the point of this. bsd is full of grey characters. but i do wish that u guys at least understood the dynamic u want to complain about.

so. there are no patterns for a sleeveless bomber jacket/vest so i'll be using a sleeved pattern and just. won't do sleeves. i'm sure there are modifications that'll have to be made to make the fabrics right before where the sleeves would be not just... end unfinished. but i will figure it out.
the fabric i use is going to be chosen almost entirely based on its ability to be painted. cotton, linen, wool, and silk seem to be the best fabrics for that. i'm... not doing wool lmao. and silk seems like it might work -- might make it look a bit more like typical cycling vest material? -- BUT.
my sister thinks that painting on silk sounds like a nightmare. and since she is doing me the favor of painting it. it behooves me to make fabric decisions that WON'T torment her. so that leaves cotton and linen i guess.
some kind of cotton blend might also work but idk WHAT blend and if it would really be much different than full cotton. i dunno!
also once that's done i'll have to get and maybe make matching shorts by dyeing it but that honestly seems so much easier in comparison, it's just 1) find shorts that fit me and are the right look (like just standard shorts, no line of buttons or extra flair), and 2) IF not already the right color, dump into a bucket and dye em

jacket.
written for @steddieholidaydrabbles | prompts: jacket | wc: 999 | rating: teen & up | tags: alternate universe- no upside down, alternate universe- coffee shop au, different first meeting, musician!Eddie (if you squint), barista!Steve, platonic stobin, meddling Robin, flirting, fluff, getting together, requited pining
“Need me to grab the mop bucket?” Robin asks, leaning forward and into his field of vision.
Steve snaps back into reality from an elongated daydream to find Robin staring at him, grinning maniacally.
“Did I spill something?” He checks around the back of the display case, finding nothing.
“No, you’re just drooling, that’s all.” Robin shrugs and claps him on the shoulder. “You ever gonna talk to him?”
“I talk to him every day, Rob—” Steve starts but doesn’t get to finish because the Him in question appears.
A chill blows through the door along with him, a dusting of snow stuck to his sneakers and dotting the shoulders of his leather jacket. Steve’s not sure how he’s even wearing that thing over what looks to be several layers of teeshirts and under a thick, denim vest laden with hand stitched patches.
“That’s not what I mean and you know it,” Robin whispers and scurries away, smirking.
He hates her.
He loves her, but he hates her.
“Hey, Eddie,” Steve welcomes his favorite customer, feigning normalcy because he’s anything but normal about this man he can’t stop fucking daydreaming about. “What’ll you have today?”
“Hmm,” Eddie ponders, throwing his jacket over the back of his usual chair at a bistro table by the window. “What was that gingerbread whatever the fuck you made yesterday?”
Steve laughs, his nose crinkling. “I don’t think that’s what it’s called but if that’s what you want, I can make it for you.”
“Sign me up, big boy. Give me something hot and sweet,” Eddie winks and hands Steve a few dollar bills, their fingers grazing. Steve’s heart thumps in his chest as he tries to remember how to work the stupid cash register. Eddie pockets his change and heads over to the small table.
Steve does his best not to stare, but the coffee shop is quiet today and he can only pretend to clean the countertop so many times until that becomes more obvious than Steve just… looking. So he looks.
Like every other day for the last few months, Eddie whips out a notebook and sips the sugary abomination as he writes. Tapping his pen against the laminate of the table, scratching his chin, watching out the window, and then writing in unpredictable bursts only to repeat the cycle again and again. Steve doesn’t know anything about Eddie and asking what he’s working on in this private little notebook feels invasive.
Not that he doesn’t wonder out loud when Eddie’s not around— it’s why Robin won’t stop teasing him.
The snow continues to fall, sparkly fat flakes that stick to the sidewalk as Eddie works, and writes, and taps his pen just loud enough for Steve to make over the low hum of the holiday music they’re forced to play.
“Fuck!” Eddie shouts, startling Steve out of his thoughts as he scrambles to shove the notebook into his bag. “Sorry, I’m just, I’m late for a really important practice and just realized the time. Thanks for the coffee, Steve!”
“You’re wel—” The bell over the door chimes before he can finish the word, “—come.”
“Goddamn it,” Steve sighs.
“Still nothing?” Robin pokes her head out from the backroom where she’d stayed hidden for absolutely no reason.
“No, Robin. Still nothing. He’s a customer and I don’t wanna be a creep, okay?”
“It didn’t stop you when we worked at the ice cream parlor. Or the video store. Or the—”
“I’ve evolved! Give me some credit!”
“Oh, look!” Robin ignores him and walks past him to grab a leather jacket off of the back of Eddie’s chair. “He left his jacket! You can start a conversation when he comes back for it, right?”
“Who do you think I am? Cinderella?” Steve laughs, but takes the jacket all the time.
Robin rolls her eyes. “Well, technically, he’d be Cinderella. He left this jacket behind like some sort of metalhead glass slipper.”
“Let me try again: who do you think I am? A fucking Disney prince?”
“You could be if you tried harder.”
Steve doesn’t respond, just shakes his head again and quietly takes the jacket home with him for safekeeping. He’ll give it back to Eddie tomorrow, and maybe Robin will stop making jokes about Disney movies.
Except Eddie doesn’t come back the next day.
Or the day after that.
A week passes, and Eddie still hasn’t come back for his jacket or his daily coffee that’s more syrup than coffee, but Steve keeps the jacket, brings it back and forth to and from work every day for over a week.
It’s a bitterly cold morning when Steve eventually breaks. Eddie’s leather jacket hangs over his arm, like it has every morning, and he stops at a crosswalk to throw it on over his own bomber jacket. Warm and rich, he lifts the top collar up over his face to protect his frozen nose and inhales the remnants of smoke and musk.
When he finally makes it to the shop, he breathes a sigh of relief that Robin cranked the thermostat.
“There it is,” a familiar voice pops up behind him. “I thought I left it here.”
Steve’s not cold anymore, hot embarrassment flushing from his chest to his cheeks as he turns around and sees Eddie there, sitting at a table with his notebook and a smile.
“I was— I wasn’t—” He sputters.
“Robin told me, don’t worry. Why don’t you uh, why don’t you hang onto it today and maybe give it back to me tonight? Over dinner, if you’re free?”
He can’t even be mad when Robin looks at him from over the counter with a very conspicuous thumbs up.
“Yeah! Yeah, I’m free,” Steve agrees, maybe a bit too quickly but subtly has never been his strong suit.
“Oh, and Steve?”
“Yeah?”
“You should wear the jacket,” Eddie's face flushes as he pulls a lock of hair just in front of his lips. “It looks great on you.
