It would involve law enforcement officers checking travel documents, passports and visas and making sure travelers abide by strict customs and agriculture importation rules at UK airports before flights are boarded. More than 600 US law enforcement officers currently work at such facilities around the world. Pre-clearance operations in Dublin and Shannon airports in Ireland opened in 2008 and last year officers processed almost 1.5 million people. In total, 18 million people went through the pre-clearance system around the world last year – 15 per cent of all commercial air travellers flying into the US. But it is feared that if implemented in the UK, it could see increased costs for travellers. Discussions between the UK and United States on the potential deployment of US Customs and Border Protection officers to the UK are ongoing. One insider said the Americans were very keen on pre-clearing and it was unlikely that the question of whether officers were armed, as is the case in America, or not would be a deal-breaker. He added: “They are much more concerned about having pre-clearing granted than they are about having their officers walking around armed like in the US. The real challenge is who’s going to pay. “The US wants airports to pay for it; airports will say, ‘That’s fine’ but then increase charges to airlines. I would imagine airlines would pass on some of that additional cost to flight users.”

SCOTS HOTEL VISITED BY THE BEATLES SNAPPED UP BY NEW OWNER…. THE hotel where The Beatles stayed during their 1964 tour of Scotland has been snapped up by a new owner. Guests can stay in the chalet where John Lennon and Paul McCartney spent the night at The Four Seasons at St Fillans in Perthshire after the 19th century boutique hotel was bought by businesswoman Susan Stuart in a £795,000 takeover deal. Ms Stuart can already stake her own claim to fame, having launched the legendary Roundhouse venue – a former railway engine shed converted into a performing arts and concert venue in London. She moved to Perthshire for a change of scenery and chose the Four Seasons because of its setting and history. The Fab Four arrived at the hotel during a night of heavy rain on October 19, 1964. Fresh from another wild show in Edinburgh’s ABC Cinema, the travel-weary Liverpudlians were ushered into the dining room for steaks. The following morning John and Paul took a walk along the shores of Loch Earn.  A news report at the time said they tried to “entice a dog into the loch by throwing sticks. SCOTS CYCLE STAR ROBERT MILLAR IS NOW MS PHILIPPA YORK….  ONE of Britain’s most successful male cyclists has become a woman. Robert Millar, 58, announced yesterday that from now on she is to be called Philippa York. Millar was the best Briton in the Tour de France, finishing fourth 33 years ago, until the overall Tour de France wins of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, had the best place of a Briton in the race, finishing fourth 33 years ago, while also being crowned King of the Mountains the same year. Ms York has previously written on cycling as Robert Millar. Now she will write as Philipa York and contribute to ITV4’s  Tour de France coverage. Ms York wrote on cyclingnews.com: “As much as I’ve guarded my privacy over the years, there are a few, I believe obvious, reasons to why I haven’t had a public ‘image’ since I transitioned. “Gratifyingly, times have moved on from 10 years ago when my family, friends and I were subjected to the archaic views and prejudice that some people and certain sections of the tabloid media held. “The outcome of that journey has meant that for a considerable time now I have lived as Philippa. The steps taken over a prolonged period under the watchful eye of the medical profession to complete the transition from one gender to another can be difficult and are always only taken after much soul-searching and anguish.” Ms York continued: “Thankfully, gender issues are no longer a subject of such ignorance and intolerance. There’s a much better acceptance and understanding. I really am delighted to have accepted this new challenge with ITV4.

SCOTS GRANDMOTHER FACE DEPORTATION AFTER AUSTRALIAN VISA RULING….  A 96-YEAR-OLD Scottish grandmother who moved to Australia to be with her family is being deported over a visa ruling. Christina Grant, from Dulnain Bridge in Strathspey, is described as nearly blind, has mild dementia and requires round-the-clock care. The frail pensioner moved to New South Wales to stay with her son Allan and daughter-in-law Diane after her elder son Robert, who was her carer in Scotland, died two years ago. Despite believing she was complying with her visa, which stipulates that she must leave Australia once a year, it is understood she is to be deported. Diane Grant has posted a picture of her mother-in-law online, gripping a walking stick and a wheelie-case, apparently preparing to leave. She wrote: “Here is 96-year-old mum with bag packed, ready to leave her only close family and her home for the last couple of years, and being sent back to Scotland – hopefully to a nursing home – after the bureaucrats here unreasonably expired her visa. “If it had instead been cancelled we could have gone to the administration appeals tribunal who, I believe, would have overturned this decision. “The immigration department has kept themselves and us very busy, filling in endless forms and offer no help or advice. “We paid $250 for less than half an hour with an immigration specialist who did clarify a couple of things for us but was useless in the end – not her fault as there was nothing she could do for us.”

MARK BEAUMONT AIMS TO CYCLE WORLD IN JUST 80 DAYS….  A SCOTS adventurer set off on his latest trek today – inspired by the feat of fictional explorer Phileas Fogg – to cycle the world in 80 days. Mark Beaumont, who rode round the globe in 2008, is now planning to repeat the feat in less than half the time. The 34-year-old, of Murthly in Perthshire, will cycle 240 miles a day and will be joined by 17 drivers, leaders, navigators and nutritionists. Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic novel, Beaumont set off from Paris early today on the Artemis World Cycle. A cross-continent pedal, it will take him through Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and Mongolia on his way towards Beijing. From there he will head south to Australia, before covering the South and North islands of New Zealand. Onwards towards the USA, his journey will see him land at Anchorage before braving the rugged terrain on the road to Halifax, Canada. If all goes to plan, he will be back in Paris on September 21.
