Day 6 Back to the mainland - spectacular coastline views

Or, more riding on Croatian flats - when the guides say it is down hill all the way they really mean it is less steep uphill. When we always start at the sea, there is no way to go but up.

We left Korčula on the boat and headed back to the main coast for the most scenic ride of the trip. The keeners cycled fast. We stopped and took lots of pictures. We were all along a cliff for most of the afternoon. We stopped at a winery and sampled lots of different wines.

What looks like a bike path is a road. There were only a couple cars though.

We took the ferry from Hvar to Korčula Island, the sixth largest island in Croatia. A website describes it as one of the most delightful islands in southern Dalmatia and that certainly is true.

Korcula is a treasure trove of gorgeous vineyards, olive groves, medieval squares and charming small villages, all very easy to explore on foot or bike. We chose biking and had booked a self-guided cycling tour to Lumbarda, a small fisherman’s village on the island.

The self guided tour included a map, guide and a glass of wine per person at Bire Winery, where they make the traditional GrK wines (it was so good, we of course had more than one hahaha!). We were very happy to go at our own pace - we stopped at a few other wineries along the way, ate delicious pizza with a view at Pizzeria Torkul for lunch, lounged at a beautiful beach on our path and got to chat with locals along the way.

There’s that moment when you’re biking on a quiet narrow lane winding through a winery and your senses are overwhelmed with the scent of the grapes basking in the sun, the stunning greens and reds of the vines and leaves... and you feel so alive and lucky to be able to have such experiences.

Whipping up a storm with the fragrant Gregada an imaginative stew, the aspiring chef in me would love also to taste the rare Vitalac which originates from the island of Brač.  The mouth-watering dishes of Croatia evolve over delicacies such as Istarski fuzi, a pasta served with veal sauce, Brudet, a fish stew,  Viska and komiska pogaca, a savoury dish with salted fish and roasted turkey with mlinci pasta, a traditional Croatian pasta dish. Day 4

Hvar to Korčula

Bus-> bike-> boat-> bus-> boat

The above tells the tale. You can’t get there from here. These islands run parallel to each other but there are no ferries that pass between them. The small boats can’t take our support van and bikes so they had to drive all the way through Bosnia to Dubrovnik and then ferry back to Korčula.

We took a bus in the morning over yesterday’s “kill hill” and then cycled to the east end of the island. It was another huge elevation, 980 M but more gradual than the day before so it was a piece of cake - not. Lunch was at the top cooked in a huge fire oven.

After the ride down the other side I got to put my feet in the cool ocean.

We took a private boat over to the peninsula (essentially another island) at Trpanj and then another bus over to another small boat on the other side.

Girls on the back of the boat were throwing strawberries in the air for the birds. (Notice the flying strawberry at 11:00 in the picture).

After the second boat ride we arrived in the home of Marko Polo - The island of Korčula.

Subtitle The 7th Triathlon Marco Polo Challenge, is Korčula's international sporting event for all persons with a competitive spirit. In 2017 the Triathlon takes place on April 29 consisting of Olympic and sprint distance races (cycling, swimming, running)  for foreign and domestic recreational and licensed triathletes. In addition, Korčula's schools compete for local championships.
