THANK YOU ABBY! And @tillahji and family. RePosted • @abbyriacharles The roots of Carnival are in protest and resistance. "The re-enactment of Kambule is symbolically the awakening of the Carnival spirit." I Just finished watching @kambule1881 the short film re-enacting Kambule and i'm thankful for the Springer family for their work to preserve these carnival roots over the years. "Usually they re-enact Kambule on carnival Friday to recognise and celebrate the bois men and women, the warriors of the mas, who held the frontline in the confrontation with Captain Baker in the 1880s." Story: Kambule was banned in 1880. The British authorities found it was too disorderly and out of control.    In 1881, The masqueraders, stickfighters came out in full force and a full-scale fight ensued. The police retreated and the celebrations continued peacefully. And so Carnival begins with Kambule! Thinking of this as @womenofcarnival march today in protest. Carnival is protest, carnival is resistance. Swipe for videos from past Kambule re-enactments. The cover video is reposted from the amazing @caribbeangirlmeiks. "This is My Platform, My Peace and Piece, My Rebellion, My Path To Purpose, My Understanding of Self And Us. My Safety and My Weapon , My Constant Expression Through Many Aspects Of Sharing Light.
