*Long sigh*
Alright guys. I’m here with an angry post about this. Please bear with me.
[x] This is a map of the Columbia Watershed. The Snake River is highlighted in yellow, the Columbia in blue.
[x] This is a map of the dams on the Columbia and the Snake. Bonneville, The Dalles, John Day, and McNary are on the Columbia. Ice Harbor, Lower Monumental, Little Goose, and Lower Granite are on the Snake.
On February 6, 2021, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) proposed a " $33 billion infrastructure and community investment strategy that would breach the four lower Snake River dams and reorder much of the fish, energy and commodity transportation systems of the Pacific Northwest.”
[x]
Good news, right?
Yeah, it’s great news until you get to the part about the time frame.
“If turned into legislation, passed and implemented according to Simpson’s timeline, Lower Granite Dam would be breached in the summer of 2030 and the river that was swallowed by slackwater 55 years earlier would reemerge. The breaching of Little Goose, Lower Monumental and Ice Harbor dams would follow and the entire stretch of the river would return to its free-flowing state by 2031.“ That’s NINE YEARS. 9. N-I-N-E. The Southern Residents can barely find enough food now. There’s no way they’ll last 9 years and still be an even barely viable population (not that they’re a strong, viable population at the moment anyways).
Lets go over everyone who died from 2010-2020. 10 years, approximately how many years it will be for the river to be free flowing.

Twenty-nine dead. Sixteen of these deaths were under the age of 40. Twelve were males, two were unknown genders, fifteen were females.
Now, lets look at the births that survived within that same time frame (2010-2020).

L115 (Mystic) Male born to L47 (Marina), her third calf, August, 2010
K43 (Saturna) Female born to K12 (Sequim), her third calf, February, 2010
J47 (Notch) Male born to J35 (Tahlequah), her first calf, January, 2010
Eighteen were born and survived (to this point when I’m posting this- February 10, 2021). Eleven are males, two are unknown genders, five are females.
Now, we’ve lost 15 females over the course of 10 years and have only gained FIVE in that same time period.
Now that we’ve looked at the births and deaths, lets look at the current living population, shall we?
J pod has 10 adult females, (2 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 2 adult males; 8 young males; 1 unknown gender.
K pod has 7 adult females (2 post-reproductive); 1 young female; 7 adult males; 2 young males.
L pod has 15 adult females (5 post-reproductive); 3 young females; 6 adult males; 9 young males; 1 unknown gender.
Total Males: 15 adult, 18 juvenile
Total Females: 23 reproductive, 9 post reproductive, 7 juvenile
Total Unknown Genders: 2
Now, that may seem like a good number of females, but we have to keep in mind that they need to produce healthy, living, viable, FEMALE calves to keep this population growing. While all calves are loved and cherished in this population, we need more females. This population is on a downhill trend that can NOT LAST NINE YEARS WITHOUT ENOUGH FOOD. “When the whales starve, their pregnancies fail. Southern Resident females used to give birth once every five years, just like females in other killer whale populations. But their average birth frequency has dropped to about once every ten years.“ [x]
For anyone who still might not be getting the picture, here. I have a picture for you. This is the population census that the Center for Whale Research updates on December 31 and July 1 each year.
[x] Do you see the trend? It’s falling. This population was decimated by the capture era (1960s-1970s) and is now continuing to struggle FIFTY YEARS LATER.
Another point: Reducing whale watching will NOT HELP. Whale watching companies help keep recreational boaters away from the whales and help inform them on the laws. They also report sightings and help keep population tabs. If a whale isn’t looking good, they can report that. If they didn’t see a whale for multiple encounters in a row and the CWR hasn’t been able to get out with them, they can let CWR know. This is a community effort, tracking and monitoring the SRKW. Whale Watch boats also ensure that, when Sound Watch (which mostly operates off the West side of San Juan Island) is not around, that local recreational boaters follow the Be Whale Wise guidelines and keep their distance from the Southern Residents.
“The Southern Residents pulled through the shooting era and pulled through the capture era, but if Ken is right, they will not pull through the conservation era. They are long-lived animals, so they will still be here—yet they will be gone...“We’re at the point—we’re past the point—of no return.”“ [x]
I appreciate Rep. Mike Simpson’s efforts to try to breach the Lower Snake River Dams, but the time to act is now. We are watching extinction happen before our very eyes. Breach the dams in 2021! NO FISH, NO BLACKFISH! “What will we lose if we let the Southern Residents go extinct?” “Our minds.” [x]

EXK.KZ https://www.instagram.com/p/CWR-Buboi8J/?utm_medium=tumblr

On this prelude to the Halloween Special Mista Montana and Menace do this:
The world famous DJ-JS-1 sat down to discuss his new album and the lack of authenticity artists of today claim to have using social media. "It Is What It Isn't" boasts an impressive line up of over 45 artists and a total of 21 songs, many of which become the subject of discussion in a revealing interview. Hear the making of such tracks as "It Is What It Isn't", "Whatever It Takes", "Soo Real" among others and find out why a planned song with Akrobatik and Jeru The Damaja didn't make the album. Will JS-1 and OC collaborate for a full length project one day? Listen and find out.
Author Brian Coleman shares his technique of putting together "Check The Technique Volume 2", his third book in a series, with a detailed history of classic Hip Hop LP's coupled by track-by-track break down of the songs by the artists themselves. In an attempt to get closer to the fly on the wall experience of documenting some of these albums we talk the process of exploring albums such as "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper", " A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing", "Funcrusher Plus", "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx" and much more!
Apollo Brown takes to Conspiracy Worldwide Radio to discuss and promote his new collaborative LP with Ras Kass "Blasphemy", breaking down the making behind several of the LP's tracks and inspiration for them. We also touch on his many upcoming projects, which will include a compilation, a "surprise" EP with a Mello-Music artist, a track with KA and more.
Viper Records' Hasan Salaam joins us to celebrate the final chapter in his trilogy, namely, "Life In Black And White" and explains why it reflects a feeling of a life as opposed to a moment like his other projects. We also touch upon the inspiration behind the Immortal Technique assisted lead single "Jericho", politics, working with producers in the UK including CWR affiliate Cross-Bone-T, the future of Viper Records and more.
Genesis Elijah joins us to publicly detail the until now largely private process behind his quadruple EP "Private Moments In Public". We talk and explore the conception behind the project, which he reveals was initiated by an argument with his girlfriend, the power of social media, experimentation, working with Fliptrix for the track "The Return", recording "Underground King" remix and more, including a forthcoming project with Brown Bag All-Stars producer The Audible Doctor.
The ever quirky Busdriver makes his debut appearance on the show and walk's us through the creation of his latest opus "Perfect Hair" and speaks of ambitions of working with Matt Groening. We also talk working with Open Mic Eagle, Danny Brown, Hellfyre Club and more.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL!

The Stop
The lights are dimming unwillingly, like the trailing end of a whisper, the night is approaching fast like an impatient companion. It itches, at every moment, to overtake us. Sweat is heavy in the air, clinging to clothing and skin, clinging to bowed heads, trickling in rivulets through matted swaths of hair. The scent of jasmine is sickly sweet, hovering in clouds by the tunnel’s entrance. An amber glow is emanating from where the light scorches the bus stop ad, the passing cars roar and expel hot fumes, smelling of smoke and burnt oil, and the heat travels under and up our skirts, coating our legs with a thin layer of soot. The sun is slow today. The noxious burn of cigarette smoke, the solace after a long day, carves trails through the heat. But the taste turns sour in the thick air. The street is littered with abandoned water bottles, soiled caps trailing on the ground beneath the overflowing trash bins, collapsed boxes covered in whipped cream fester on the sidewalk. The cars sputter ungraciously, the heat remains cloaked around our bodies, blankets covering us as the light disappears, replaced by the sole enthusiastic party, the dark grey sky over our heads.
In the heat, my thoughts bloom late. I only wonder what time it is when I feel the metal face of my watch against my skin, and the chill makes me shudder. A woman in a pink shift dress steps in front of me. She turns frantically this way and that, searching for a hint of eye contact. But nobody returns her gaze, only a thin young man smoking languorously, watching her with a lazy tilt of his chin.
“Is the next bus coming the 43?” He doesn’t reply, just leans back agains the metal fence, and watches her. She repeats her question.
He flicks his cigarette in her direction. “The 43 left ten minutes ago.”
“But I’ll be late,” she says. So will I, I realize, now remembering my watch.
She looks as if she’s around 35, but perhaps she’s closer to 45 or 50, it’s hard to tell. Her skin is impressively smooth, except for three violent, deep wrinkles that cut straight down her forehead. They glint dark in the shadows. “Are you going east too?” She abruptly directs her attention to me. I tell her I’m not, that I’m going further west. The wrinkles deepen.
“I’m not from around here,” she says, though I had already guessed that. After all, words are trailing out of her mouth instead of smoke. Nobody at this bus stop talks, just waits. “I just moved to the city two weeks ago. I don’t know the routes yet.” I nod. I wonder when she will realize that every route across the city can be retraced using the same few feelings: the indifference of the tunnels, the fatigue of this stop, for example. The simmering distrust, and mistrust, everywhere. I feel compelled to understand how she has come to learn this city.
“Do you like it here?” I ask.
“I live in a house with two other women,” she says. She stops. “It’s quiet. We cook for each other. We talk to each other when we come home at night from work. The city is so big, there are a million things we want to say. And telling stories makes us happy.” Her wrinkles sharpen even more as she speaks. I can hear her accent, coarse against her tongue. As if she senses me looking, she grows self-conscious, and turns her head.
We do not move until I see a bus coming from afar, one of its front lights cracked. The number reads “87” and so I look away, but the thin young man rises to his feet with a shout. “The 43!” He yells, pointing in its direction. We both turn to him, uncomprehending. “The 43!” He jabs with the remnants of his cigarette. The woman turns in surprise, and sure enough, as the bus approaches a flimsy cardboard sign with the number 43 scrawled in black sharpie appears in the front window. The woman breaks out into a run, her sandaled feet slapping against the sidewalk, her pink skirt clinging to the outline of her thighs. I watch her go, watch until she disappears in a sullen crowd of heads and limbs. I never see her face again. I try to conjure it up in my head, but the night moves into my eyes, in overbearing thick hues of purple and navy, and between that and distant thoughts of home I find I do not remember how it looked.
