i just hope this publicity about bear stops some of the canadian self aggrandizment about how theyre so much better than the usa. i know it won’t. but in my experience canadians always downplay what they’ve done, or say “it wasn’t as bad as the US,” or say that it was something in the past. like off top of my fucking head:

1) residential schools, starlight tours, all in the near past.

2) many reserves still don’t have clean water and canada refuses to help.

3) Indigenous people are 4% of population but 23% of federal prison. Indigenous women represent 41% of all women in provincial jail.

4) Indigenous children are 8% of population but 53% of children in foster care, because Canada never stopped stealing our children. sixties scoop to millenium scoop.

5) Indigenous women and girls are extremely disproportionately victims of violence. I can’t remember off top of my head which numbers are for US and which are for Canada, but it is an ongoing epidemic of violence against Indigenous women and girls

6) the Dakota Access Pipeline that Biden is illegally running right now? it was built because of Canada, & canadian exports of oil. These pipelines don’t just taint sacred, stolen land, the mancamps around them are responsible for much violence against women. the police violence against Native people protesting pipelines cannot be understated

7) some Indigenous children in foster care have allegedly been forced to get IUDs inserted in BC. some of these children are under 10 years old. saskatchewan is also facing lawsuits for their (alleged) forced sterilization of Native women.

8) this whole fucking story. I know so many Natives with similar stories in the “great” canadian healthcare system, someone I know has a story about a loved one who was just turned away after traveling 6 hrs to the nearest hospital. i had hoped that in the nearly 60 years since my granny left canada they had grown out of calling Native women “loose” and only good for having children but nope 🙃

again, Indigenous people asserting our rights in Canada is met with hatred. But Indigenous people just existing is met with hatred too. That we still exist and have ties to what settlers call their “home and native land.” not just the current situation with Bear, it just is. they do this because they can. I think of Joyce Echaquan, who died listening to her nurse call her a fucking idiot and tell her she was better off dead. they do this because they can. and they don’t ever seem to reckon with it, because “hey we’re better than america!”

Heather Stefanson, the leader of Manitoba’s PCs, has launched a new ad campaign promoting her opposition to searching a landfill for the remains of two Indigenous women believed to have been murdered by an alleged serial killer. On Saturday, the Manitoba PCs took out a full page ad in the Winnipeg Free Press as well as site-wide banner ads on the province’s biggest newspaper’s website featuring a sensational and highly unusual campaign message from the incumbent premier, who is currently trailing by a wide margin in the latest opinion polls. “Stand firm,” reads both the print and digital versions of Stefanson’s ad. “For health and safety reasons, the answer on the landfill dig just has to be no.”

Other than that, I don't really tag as I usually speed-reblog. Organized tagging systems are ultimately useless for me bc I keep it up for like a week then I'm back to not doing it at all. I'm going to be honest, I don't tag most triggers, especially obscure ones. Not out of disrespect to obscure triggers (I absolutely understand having weird, confusing triggers, I have them as well), but because I do not want to play a captcha game with every post I reblog trying to figure out if it meets your obscure trigger.

Safest bet is either to unfollow me if you're following me already or not following at all if you haven't yet. Or browse my blog and if anything is upsetting and untagged, it will probably not get tagged in the future.

I don't tag spiders or arachnophobia or insects because again, I speed reblog and considering my love for them.

Edit: if you want specific things tagged, you can ask, but I can't guarantee that I Will. But I'm also pretty chill, so like, hmu. Don't waste my time by asking me to tag "q slur". You will get blocked and deleted as soon as I see it.

Being an Indigenous nerd in fandom spaces is also the absolute worst. More often than not, people are quick to dismiss your claims because of rampant erasure of us as people.

If you're not dismissed as overly sensitive, then you're invalidated because of Blood Quantum. "UHM, actually, I'm 1/64th Cherokee Princess, my great grandmother was Pocahontas, & I have no problem with (racist statement)" happens far too often as well.

You can't call out ANY sort of racism either, unless you're willing to lose like all your friends. Last October, I basically lost my entire friend group because all I wanted was to NOT be talked over/treated like a dog in One Piece fandom.

You want basic respect? Invalid. You're gonna be dehumanized, talked over, & told what is & isn't racist/impacts you negatively from people who are NOT Native.

Our sacred culture is free game apparently, even though we were killed for it up until recently. We were barred from this. Residential schools were finally brought to an end in the 90's, that is how recent it is. With rampant dehumanization, MMIW, land grabbing, & destruction still as recent as THIS YEAR, it's difficult to be a Native person in this world. I want to come online & get away from it, only to get slapped in the face with this sort of behavior & NO ONE is willing to listen to you unless it suits their agenda. No one wants to help you.

It's exhausting, disheartening, & lonely to be a Native Nerd in fandom spaces.

I deliberated with this person in particular, for DAYS. I tried so hard to explain why their friend was being blatantly racist. I LOVED this user, they were my friend. I actually had a panic attack over this.

So much energy exerted in patient explanations to them because I wanted her to understand, & it seemed like she would until she sent that. It hurt me so bad that it threw me into a panic attack, because ONCE AGAIN- I realized that I, as a Native fan, was not in good company.

I loved her, but she couldn't give me even basic respect. She went on to post a "vent poem" on her personal blog about how I used her & left her, making herself out to be the victim.

I don't get attached to people very easily at all. I don't just Love anyone. But I loved her, so the betrayal hurt so much worse. I left my rp blog after this, & still haven't fully come back to it. I'm still hurt over the fact that she did this to me, & I'll never get closure.

I’d have been fine with the reblog (hell signal boosting was why I reblogged it) but the combo platter of serious post/serious problem with a come-on nearly made me puke at the complete inappropriateness.
