Everyday Hero: Dad-Aizawa Fic

Hey there @the-lupine-sojourner !!! It’s me, Fleurie 😁 I bet you’re wondering, “huh, I wonder why she’s tagging me in this fic?” Well, I got news for you, buddy! I was your Secret Santa for this @dailybnha BNHA Secret Santa event! 😄 Surprise! What are the odds, ey? 😂 I hope I didn’t give it away in my anon asks cuz with me sounding all nervous all the time :p try as I might, I cannot shake it, lol. Well, anyway, this is all still a little new to me, writing bnha centered fics and whatnot. And as I mentioned before, it came out a little more on the slice of life side than fluff. Sorry, but I hope you like it anyway! Enjoy some Dadzawa and I hope you have a Merry Christmas!

The baby in his arms reached her tiny hands up, grasping at a few strands of his hair. It was different than before. No more did he feel that irk of annoyance when she did that. Instead, it felt warm. Innocent. And filled with love. Eraserhead blinked in surprise and tugged his head back. The movement caused him to wince and the child to laugh a colorful, sweet, twinkling laugh. Despite himself, Eraserhead felt a smile broaden over his own face and a soft laugh break through.

“Fukukado,” he warned, still laughing, “Turn it off.”

She quirked a brow, a smirk playing on her lips. “It’s not me, Eraser.”

“Don’t lie to me,” His hair rises (save for the strand in the infant’s hand) and his eyes glow red as he attempts to erase a quirk that was never even activated.

What? Curiously, he sneaks a glance at Yoshiko. Nothing.

“It’s not her either,” Emi says chuckling, “It’s you. It’s all you.”

“NO.”

“Oh come on, Shota! You haven’t even heard what it is yet.”

“I don’t need to. The fact that you’re asking me is enough.”

“Since when is me asking for a favor a bad thing?”

“Since you haven’t visited for years and only show up whenever you need something.”

“Okay, I know I haven’t had the chance to visit lately, but I know for a fact you haven’t made the effort either. The way I see it, it’s the classic kettle calling the pot.”

“I have a responsibility to my agency.”

“As do I to my city,” Sigh, “Look, it’s just for a few days. I need to attend the conference per company regulation. It’s just a series of meetings and trainings, but I can’t bring Yoshiko with me. I need someone to look after her while I’m gone.”

“Why don’t you get a babysitter for her?”

“I’m not trusting my baby to a stranger! Especially not now where there’s been undocumented kidnappings in the area. I don’t have time to do background checks on everyone. I know you. And I trust you. Please, you’re the only one I trust to look after my daughter.”

“...How long?”

“Just the weekend. The second the conference is over, I’ll be on the next flight home. I promise.”

“Alright. Bring her by the house later when you’ve got all her things. Stay safe up there.”

“I will. Oh, thank you Shota! You have no idea how much this means to me.”

“Don’t mention it. Though, in exchange, you need to stop with these out of nowhere favors. Come by and visit sometime.”

“Of course! Yoshiko needs to get to know her godfather, afterall.”

“Her what?”

It’s been four years.... I miss you, Aneko.

Indeed, four years have passed since the disappearance of his cousin. What had only meant to be a three day weekend of watching his newfound goddaughter had taken a somber turn when news spread of a massive villain attack in the city where his cousin’s agency was undergoing their annual battle training. Normally, such an outright attack on a congregation of heroes would be wildly unsuccessful, if not laughable. But this instance was far from normal. In broad daylight, the entire building just vanished. Along with everyone inside it.

Investigations were still underway to locate the missing heroes. But in the four years of the aftermath, too little leads yielded little hope. Many families were grieving and others were moving on, adjusting to their new lives; Shota included. Suddenly, he found himself to be the only family baby Yoshiko had left. Her mother was missing and as far as he knew, Aneko had been on her own.

Once he came to terms with the fact that he was now her legal guardian, he had pulled out all the stops. Parenting books, crib shopping, taking a leave of absence from his agency, and enlisting the help of a few friends like Ms. Joke and Present Mic. Despite not having any children herself, Fukukado was great with children. She always seemed to know what to do to get a laugh out of the child without the use of her quirk. Mic knew some good lullabies to lull her to sleep.

Even with all the help he had been receiving from those around him, he still found himself questioning his abilities. How was he supposed to raise a child? Aizawa never had any siblings growing up and was raised to be independent from the get go. Aizawa knew he couldn’t rely on their help forever, so he spent countless hours practicing on his own. In no time at all, he learned to change diapers, properly prepare bottles, braid hair, put outfits together, etc. and as Yoshiko got older, he was constantly finding himself picking toys off of the ground, trying to get her to eat her vegetables, preparing special meals for her, struggling to get her to sit still in the morning long enough to brush her hair. It was hard work. And he loved every minute of it.

Finally, in the blink of an eye, Yoshiko was old enough to start school. It should have been a relief to have her start school. It would mean that she was being kept under close supervision at all times for the better part of the day so that he could focus a little more on his work. As it was, being a single, working father was hard enough. Having somewhere she could be safe while he worked gave him a little bit of breathing room, but lately, he had been reminded that villains didn’t seem to care for heroes’ personal lives and would make their little heists at ungodly hours of the day. Or just any time he could have spent with his daughter.

With a sigh, the erasure hero pulled his goggles over his eyes and refocused on his current mission at hand. His agency had gotten word of suspicious activity on one end of town and had sent him to investigate. Silently, he crept towards the edge of the building overlooking an alleyway. It looked to be some sort of contraband deal. There were six figures in total; nothing too serious. Working quickly, he made sure to apprehend them and made short work of them in no time. The only injury he sustained was a cut along his upper arm from one of the thugs’ talons when he let him get too close. All things considered, that injury was the least of his problems.

“Shoot!” The injury could wait. He was nearly two hours late picking up Yoshiko from pre-school. Working quickly, he made sure to bind the thugs together away from the contraband and contacted the authorities. It took forever for them to arrive, it seemed. By the time the first cop car arrived, Eraserhead was already wrapping his scarf onto the building ledge.

“Wait!” The cop called, “Eraserhead, we need a statement!”

“That’ll have to wait,” He responded curtly, “I’m already late picking up my daughter.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of town, a little girl with violet hair and yellow floral overalls is sitting in the doorway of a classroom, drawing in the dirt with her finger. Her backpack is lain against the wall. Two of her teachers are watching from inside the classroom and exchange worried glances. The younger of the two, Akiyama, approaches her and kneels down next to her.

"How are you doing, sweetie? Your dad still isn't here yet?"

"Nope."

"Do you want to come inside? It’s going to be dark soon.”

“No, thank you.” she replied, not looking up from her drawings, “Daddy will come.”

“I know sweetie, but we need to get you inside. We’ll call your dad again in a few minutes.” She holds out a hand towards Yoshiko. “Come on. You can have a snack if you want, too.”

Yoshiko finally looks up at her and stares at her hand blankly. She hums in hesitation before glancing out one more time at the empty parking lot. “I don’t…”

A loud screeching of tires sounds through the air and a taxi is seen skidding past the pickup area, grinding to a halt a few feet away from where the classroom door is. The poor teacher’s aide next to Yoshiko screams and falls back, but the little girl smiles with glee. Aizawa jumps out the driver’s side and a very frightened taxi driver scrambles out of the passenger side.

The driver clutches his stomach and raises a shaking finger at Aizawa, “Y-you! What are you crazy?! You could have killed us!”

The other teacher rushes out of the classroom and kneels down at the side of the petrified aide. She shoots Aizawa a very angry look. “Sir!” she screamed, “This is a school, for Heaven’s sake!”

He pays no attention to them, instead, focusing on the one shout that mattered.

“Daddy!”

He rushed around the car to the little Yoshiko who is bouncing up and down excitedly. She’s raising her arms and he scoops her up into a hug with an apologetic look on his face.

“Hey, hey…” he murmured, “I’m so sorry. I didn’t expect work to keep me out so late. I’ll be on time tomorrow, okay? I promise.”

“It’s okay Daddy,” she said snuggling her face into his shirt, “I knew you’re coming!”

The older teacher, Hayashi, is helping up Akiyama while holding a steady glare at the “Sir,” she reprimanded, “This cannot continue. We have told you countless times that we are not a daycare center. When 3 o’clock rolls around, you are expected to be here, on TIME, to pick up your child. I understand you’re a busy man, but given that you are already aware of these instances, I implore you to make arrangements at an actual after school child care facility-”

“I am not trusting my baby to a stranger,” Aizawa interrupted, holding Yoshiko tighter, “The background check process took long enough with this school, I don’t have the time to interview other daycares.”

“Well, I’m sorry, sir, but something has to be done. Take it up with your employer; we can’t keep doing this.”

The tension hung in the air for a brief moment before Aizawa finally relented with a sigh. “I’m sorry. I’ll see what I can do. I’ll be here tomorrow.”

Hayashi crossed her arms and said, “See to it that you do.” before leading Akiyama back to the classroom by the elbow.

“Looks like I have work to do,” Aizawa humphed. He pulled Yoshiko away from him and placed her on his shoulders. “You want to take the scenic route home?”

“Yes!” she cried, clapping her hands happily. Aizawa wrapped one end of his scarf around her like a makeshift seatbelt and readied the other in his free hand. Before taking off, he dug around in his pocket for a few bills. He promptly handed them to the taxi driver who, though no longer shaking, still remained a little green from the incident.

“Sorry about that. We’ll take the high road home from here. Let’s go!”

Yoshiko waved bye-bye to the taxi driver one last time. And with that, he swung off high above the building tops.

“Alright, Yoshiko,” he said putting her down once they got home, “go put your backpack away. I’ll clean up a little and get dinner started.”

“Okay!”

While she bounded off to her room, Aizawa made his way to his own room to grab a fresh set of clothes and get changed. He winced a little at a small pain in his upper arm and remembered his wound. The cut wasn’t deep. Nothing a bandage shouldn’t be able to take care of. After wrapping it quickly, he headed back to the kitchen and set some noodles to boil on the stovetop. While that was cooking, he found Yoshiko sitting at the table with crayons and pages scattered all around her. Most were adorned with colorful doodles of cats and flowers. She had her head bent low over her current project and was scribbling feverently. Aizawa took a spot next to her, leaning over curiously.

“What are you drawing there?”

Donning a wide grin, she proudly holds up her drawing, “It’s you!”

Indeed it was. As close to resembling Aizawa as a four year-old’s crayon drawing could be, anyway. Yoshiko had drawn a tall box looking man with wild black sticks for hair and giant pink swirls for his eyes. Beside the figure was a smaller box girl with violet sticks of hair pointing downward that seemed to be both holding hands with the Aizawa figure and holding this giant pudgy looking cat in her other arm. (Said cat was now rubbing himself along the feet of her chair, meowing for attention.) And on the top of the page was scrawled the words “ME AN DADE” Warmth blossomed in his chest as he took it all in. Yoshiko leaned over with big gleaming eyes. “Do you like it, daddy? Did I do good?”

Aizawa chuckled and pulled her over, giving her a kiss on the forehead, “I do. It’s beautiful, thank you. And you know what? I know the perfect place for this.”

She jumped off of her chair and followed him back to the kitchen where she watched him proudly stick a magnet on the corner and stuck it to the fridge. “How does that look?” He asked her. Instantly, she squealed and bounced around in joy. “It looks perfect!!”

He picked her up and planted another kiss on her head before setting her back down again. “I’m going to finish up here. Go draw me another one, okay?”

“I’m gonna make a big one!” she cried, running back to her crayons and starting on a clean page with a renewed vigor.

As he stirred the soba, Aizawa got to thinking. How did he end up with such a beautiful little girl? A small pang hit his heart as he recalled the specific details as to how he came to be her guardian, but it was replaced with determination to raise his goddaughter as if she were his own. So far, it looked like he was succeeding. She was growing up so fast, and so patient for her age. She had to come first, always. It wasn’t fair that what happened today was commonplace for her. At this rate, it could spiral out of control and he could be missing out on larger parts of her life.

No. He wasn’t going to let that happen. Working at the agency and trying to be there for Yoshiko was becoming too much of a losing battle. He would just have to take a break from hero work for a while. Try something else, teaching maybe. A lightbulb went off in his head and he grabbed his cell, dialing a certain blonde pro-hero.

“Hizashi? Could you come over and watch over Yoshiko for a little while? There’s something I need to do.”

“Principal Nedzu, thank you for meeting with me on such short notice”

“Not at all!” The small rodent hoisted himself up on a chair and settled down happily with his cup of tea. “I have often told you in the past that if you ever needed anything, all you had to do was ask. Surprisingly, not too many folks are too keen on the idea of coming to me when they need assistance. I ask for nothing in return; I’m so glad you are finally coming forward to speak with me. Just tell me what you need and we can work something out. Are you having issues in your current place of employment? Perhaps if we discussed it at great length-?”

“That won’t be necessary,” Aizawa interrupted hastily, “I am experiencing some difficulty with time management in my current agency. I called hoping to meet with you to discuss an employment opportunity you had offered to me in the summer.”

“Ah, yes!” Nedzu exclaimed, “I do recall contacting you. We are in need of a new homeroom teacher for the hero course. Have you reconsidered my offer? The position is still available if you are interested.”

Aizawa set his own cup down and leaned forward in his chair. “As a matter of fact, I have. I will be leaving my current agency soon in favor of a job with more manageable hours. Financially speaking, we are well off. But practically, I cannot raise my daughter if I am never home. And now that she has started school, I am having a difficult time finding a middle ground”

Nedzu nodded understandably, “Yes, I see. It is no easy task raising a child alone. But rest assured, here at U.A. we take care of our faculty members. Believe it or not, you are not the only teacher who has had difficulty with after school childcare. We have a daycare center in our main building. You are more than welcome to make use of it for your daughter. We can send someone over to retrieve her every day precisely at three o’clock and have her wait here until the school day has finished.”

Aizawa stiffens a little at the mention of someone else picking up Yoshiko from school. Nedzu catches the hesitation, “I see you are a little uneasy still? Not to worry, Eraserhead, we are all trained professionals here. Your daughter will be in safe hands. You have my word”

Later that night, Aizawa took special care in brushing and braiding Yoshiko’s hair. He sat with her on the bed while she busied herself with annoying the old black and white kitty by hugging him relentlessly. While he brushed, he pondered how to ask his next question.

“Yoshiko? I want you to tell me something.”

“Yes?”

“How does it make you feel when I am late picking you up from school? Or have to leave early sometimes and you have to stay with aunt Fukukado or uncle Hizashi until I get back?”

The question makes her pause and think. The cat uses this opportunity to flee but she makes no effort to grab him again. “Well...sometimes when you’re late, I feel sad. I have to wait longer to see you. And when you’re really late...I get scared…”

A surprised look comes across Shota’s face, “Scared?”

She nods in affirmation, “Uh-huh. I get scared...cuz what if you don’t come for me? I don’t want you to forget about me…then I would be alone...”

At that, he pulls her in for a hug, “No, no. I could never forget about you. I’m sorry that I’ve scared you so much that you even had to think that. Look at me,” He lifted her face to look her in the eye, “I promise-”

“Pinky promise?” she asked, holding up her little finger.

“Pinky promise,” he confirmed, hooking their pinkies together, “that no matter how long it takes me to get to you, or how far I go, that I will never, ever forget about you. It’s impossible. You’re my little girl. I’ll always make my way back to you, even if I have to fight a million monsters to get to you. I’ll fight a million and one, just to keep you safe.” He kissed her forehead and scootches her over to the pillow end of the bed, tucking her into her covers. “Now you rest easy tonight, okay? Daddy got a new job, so I’ll be there right on time waiting for you after school. How does that sound?”

Yoshiko smiled and yawned, turning into her covers, “Every day?”

“Almost every day. If I can’t, I’ll have your uncle come get you. You won’t be alone again. I’ll be here. I promise.”

The smile on her face grew wider and more content as she begins drifting off into sleep.

“Thank you.”

He ruffles her hair in response, “You’re welcome.” He picks up her teddy bear from the floor and places it next to her as he gets up to leave. He stood at the doorway, flicking off the light when she spoke in a soft whisper.

“Daddy?”

He turned his head back to his little girl, already cuddling with her bear and falling half-asleep, “Yes?”

“You’re a hero.”

Aizawa snorted a little chuckle, “I know. That’s my job.”

“No,” she opened her eyes a little, “You’re my hero.”

A sudden burst of warmth exploded in his chest. To hold that mantle in your daughter’s heart...it almost made him want to cry. Almost. One thing he knew for sure: he would never let anyone hurt his child. He would protect her with his final breath, fight off any monster she feared, and make sure that she would be loved and safe for the rest of her life.

Sometimes he would think back to his life without her and think of how it was so different since she came along. His life was a better place. And it was all thanks to her.

“I love you daddy.”

“I love you, too.”

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Forty-Three: Damaged ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata, Uzumaki Naruto, Jiraiya ] [ SasuHina, vulgarity, homelessness ] [ Verse: Best Years of Your Life ] [ AO3 Link ]

Nobody likes damaged goods.

Hood of his sweatshirt drawn up over his face, Sasuke raps knuckles against the door before him. It’s late, lightly raining, and his typical plan has fallen through. Hence: the backup.

A light flicks on, and the sounds of a deadbolt are heard before the door opens. Beyond, rubbing tiredly at his face, is Naruto. “...Sasuke?”

“Hey.”

“Dude, it’s like…” He glances back. “...one in the morning. What’re you doing here?”

“Look, uh…” The Uchiha scratches at the back of his neck. “I can’t really explain, but...some shit went down, and...I could use a couch to crash on. If that’s okay.”

Immediately, the blond’s face slackens in surprise. “Oh, shit...uh...yeah, sure. Come on in.” Ushering his friend inside, Naruto thinks for a moment. “My goddad’s daughter is away at college, so you can crash in her room if you -?”

“No, a couch is fine. It’s...just for the night.”

“Dude, it’s a bed. All I gotta do is swap the sheets and -”

“Leave it. I just need to crash for a few hours. It’s no big deal.”

Brows furrow over blues as Naruto studies his friend...who in turn takes every opportunity to avoid his eyes. “...y’know, you can quit lying to me any time.”

“What do you mean ly-?”

“C’mon man,” Naruto sighs. “I’m not as stupid as you think I am. I know you’re out on your own. And I know those punks you’ve been hanging out with are -”

“Don’t call them that,” Sasuke cuts in with a growl.

“They’re no good for you, dude! I know the shit they get up to, and you’re not gonna -”

“Butt out,” Sasuke warns one last time. “Are you gonna let me crash on your couch, or what? Otherwise, I’m better off out in the rain than listening to your preachy ass. I’m fine.”

“You’re obviously not fine, dude! I’m worried about you!”

“I didn’t ask you to be!”

“Well too fuckin’ bad, cuz you’re my friend!”

“Well you can’t -”

“Oi, oi...what’s all the racket…?”

Both boys turn as another light flickers on, none other than Jiraiya scratching at his scalp with a yawn as he stands at the base of the stairs. The literature teacher makes a face. “Naruto, how many times I gotta tell ya not to use language like that in this house?”

“You write porn on the side while you teach teenagers about Edgar Allan Poe and Jane Austen,” Naruto retorts with a deadpan look. “I think that gives me some leeway with my language, huh?”

Jiraiya rolls his eyes. “Well...guess there’s worse things you could do. But d’you mind explaining why you two are up yelling at the wee hours of the morning?”

Scowling, Sasuke stuffs hands into his pockets and heads toward the door. “...never mind. This is a mess...I’m out.”

“Sasuke, wait -!”

Slamming the door and cutting the other pair off, Sasuke squares his shoulders and starts walking. Tch...like Naruto can even begin to understand. He’s been adopted since he was an infant, taken in by his godfather and hardly spending any time alone. Sasuke lost his parents at seven in a break-in gone wrong while he and his brother were off visiting their cousin. For a while they stayed at their aunt’s...until she was killed in the line of duty as a cop when Sasuke was twelve.

From there...the hard times really started.

He and his brother were separated in the foster system. Itachi tried to gain custody at eighteen, only to be denied...so he’s currently enrolled in college trying to better his odds at finally being able to take Sasuke in. Of course...by that time, he’ll nearly be an adult anyway. And now, at sixteen...he’s finally decided to run away fully. He’s lived in over a dozen different places in these past four years, and he’s reached a breaking point. His behavior has deteriorated with the depths of his frustration and pent-up anger. No one wants him around. So he’s decided to try couch hopping until Itachi graduates next year. He’s sure he can do it. Naruto was his most recent stop, but...something about going there feels wrong.

...maybe it’s the jealousy.

But either way, he won’t go back now. He doesn’t need Naruto looking at him like that. Like he’s some kicked puppy that the blond is going to adopt and spoil. He doesn’t need that kind of treatment...he can do this on his own. And his judgmental attitude about his friends pisses him off. Karin, Suigetsu, Jūgo...they’re in just as tight of spots as Sasuke. They do what they have to in order to get by.

Naruto just...doesn’t understand.

He’ll never understand…

Besides, being in this neighborhood sucks. He used to live on this street before everything went to hell in a handbasket. Last he checked, the house is empty...again. No one ever lives in it long. He likes to tell himself it’s haunted...and that no one can stand it. Call him bitter, but he’s glad no one else gets to call his house home.

They never should have had to leave…

Skulking in his thoughts...he almost misses it. In fact...he’s not sure what makes him look over. But Sasuke’s eyes get drawn to a house as he passes by, happening to notice that there’s...someone on the roof…?

That alone gets him to stop in his tracks. It’s dark, even more so with the cloud cover, but...he can just barely make out a silhouette along the spine of the rooftop. Staring, he can’t make out who it is from here, so...deciding he has nothing better to do, he walks across the lawn to get closer.

There’s a ladder propped up along the side of the house - it’s a split level: some roof one story tall, the rest two stories. This person - whoever they are - is sitting along the section over the front door, straddling the topmost point.

Looking it over...he then realizes what house this is. It’s been so long...but this is the Hyūga household. Two girls live here, from what he can remember. This must be one of them...the older. Hinata, was it?

“...hey.”

...no response.

Sighing, he eyes the ladder, and risks taking a few rungs up. It’s a bit slick with rain, but he’s used to climbing things he shouldn’t. “Oi…!”

For a moment, she stiffens, and he’s almost afraid she’ll fall. But her posture remains mostly balanced, looking to him in obvious fright. “W...what are you doing?!”

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”

“You’re on p-private property, and -!”

“And you’re sitting on a roof at one am in the rain,” he cuts in, tone flat. “No offense, but that’s not really something normal people do.”

As a matter of fact...it sounds like something he would do, if he had a roof to monkey about on.

“It...it’s none of your business. Who are you?”

“Sasuke. I’m in your class. Hinata, right?”

“...Sasuke…?”

Remembering he has his hood on, he tosses his head to throw it back. “Sup?”

“W...what are you doing out here?”

“Can’t sleep,” he easily fibs. “What are you doing out here?”

“...I can’t sleep either.”

“So this is your alternative? Not bingeing Netflix or something?”

“...I like the rain. And I like s-sitting on the roof.”

“Little dangerous, isn’t it? It’d be easy to fall.”

For a time, she’s quiet...then she mumbles something.

“Huh?”

“I said...it wouldn’t matter if I - i-if I did.”

He sighs. “Little dramatic, isn’t it?”

“We’re teenagers. We’re supposed to be dramatic.”

We, huh? “Yeah, well...you should come down.”

“Why?”

“Cuz it’s making me nervous, all right? Just...get off the roof, huh?”

For a moment she seems to pout at him...but then swings a leg over, scooting her way back to the ladder. He holds it for good measure, not letting go until both her feet are on the ground. “...happy?”

“Happy is a relative term. Overall? No. In this instance? Yeah.”

Hinata’s head tilts. “...what are you really doing out here, Sasuke…?”

“Running away from home. Except it’s not home, so just...running away.”

She seems to weigh if he’s messing with her or not. “...do you...have some place to go?”

“Working on it.”

“Do you want to come in?”

“Not sure any parent in their right mind with a teenage daughter would be thrilled to have a teenage boy in the house at night.”

“My dad’s not home, he’s away on business. It’s just me and my sister.”

...that rings a bell. Her mom died when she was even younger than his own loss. He’d just been too young to understand until...well, Life made him understand. “...sure it’s not weird?”

“I don’t mind. Better than you being o-out here soaking wet, right? Come on...you can take a warm shower, and I’ll put your c-clothes in the dryer.”

...under any other circumstances, he’d find all of this extremely weird. But Sasuke’s life hasn’t exactly been normal as of late, so...he shrugs, and follows her inside.

“Just toss them out the door and I’ll dry them, and put them back. We’ve got a guest room you can use.”

“A couch is -”

“Hardly comfortable. You’re going in the guest room.”

...okay, that part was weird. Hinata the wallflower, being assertive? “...all right, fine.”

His shower, admittedly, runs a little long. Not about to take one for granted given he doesn’t know when his next one will happen, he takes his time before peeking through the door. As promised, his clothes are folded just beyond it, snatched and reapplied. He finds Hinata in the kitchen, wordlessly handing him a cup of hot tea. “...what is up with you?”

“Hm?”

“You’re acting weird.”

Sipping her own and staring at him for a long moment, she retorts, “...I didn’t think you k-knew me well enough to know what’s weird for me to do.”

...well, she has a point.

“You’re usually so shy, and...modest. Now you’re letting a homeless good-for-nothing into your house, when there’s no adults around, ordering me around and making me tea? That seems weird.”

“...you needed help. And you’re Naruto’s friend, so…” Shoulders softly shrug. “...I hear bits and pieces. A-about what you’re going through. I’m...surprised you’re not at Naruto’s, honestly.”

“I went there first. Didn’t work.”

“...I see.” Considering her cup, she murmurs, “...Dad will be home in two days. You can stay until then. Hanabi won’t care, but she might p-pester you.”

“...that’s fine. I can handle pestering. You’re sure this is okay?”

Pale eyes flicker back and forth across his face, as if...looking for something.

“...I’m not exactly a stand-up kind of kid. Just want you to bear that in mind.”

The corner of her mouth twitches. “...we’re all a little damaged,” she replies softly. “And I think...yours meshes okay with mine. You can stay.”

Meshes with…? What is she talking about? Before he can ask, she gestures for him to follow, leading him to an empty bedroom.

“The sheets are clean, and there’s spare toothbrushes in the bathroom, in the cabinet on the left. It’s late, so...I’ll let you sleep in. If you get hungry, you can raid the fridge. My room’s upstairs, on the right. Knock if you need anything.”

“...uh, right. Thanks.” Watching her go, Sasuke then looks over the spare room. It looks like one of those mock-up rooms you see in magazines. It’s about the last place he can picture himself being, but...apparently this is his lot for the next two days.

...weird.

He sheepishly finds a snack, scarfing down a few handfuls of chips before doing as invited and brushing his teeth. It all feels so...strange. It’s definitely not what he was expecting...but then again, kindness tends to show up where you least expect it. And Hinata Hyūga was not the first person he was about to ask. Hell, she wasn’t even on his list. They never talk - he only knows her because Naruto hangs out with her sometimes. Apparently they even dated for a short while before calling it quits. Is that why…? She did mention his knowing the blond...but it seems to go beyond that.

Yours meshes okay with mine...what was that supposed to mean? Is she talking about...losing parents? True, she’s about the only other person he knows with a dead parent. But she still has her dad, right…?

...but he also knows sometimes a parent can be just as absent alive as dead. Away on business, huh…?

...right.

Removing his shoes, he slips into bed, staring at yet another unfamiliar ceiling. But at least this one doesn’t make his belly ache and his mind race. It’s actually...really nice. It’s only for two days, but...well, he’ll just make the most of it.

...he’ll have to thank her properly in the morning.

This is...not exactly how I pictured it going when I started, but my muse has been a lil wonky as of late, and I'm still recuperating after the double month ^^; So hopefully it's not too weird. Hinata might seem a little...strange in this one, but that's because she has her own share of trauma in this particular iteration I didn't want to delve into too much, mostly to justify Sasuke's confusion. He doesn't know what's up with her either. But losing one parent, and being so unable to depend on the other, isn't exactly easy. She knows her experience is different from (and not as heavy as) Sasuke's, but...there's still aspects she understands. There might be more reasons she was up on that roof... Buuut anyway, this is technically yesterday's prompt, and...I need to do today's. Er...the first's. It's late so...blegh. I'ma try to get that done, and finally be caught up now that SHM is over, so...let's see if I can do it! If not today, well...maybe tomorrow, lol - but either way, thanks for reading!

Another case of eloquence and truth in unexpected places. This webcomic can get pretty gross and gory at times, and the humor is most decidedly noir/black humor/sardonic/sarcastic. It is not for younger audience members...but sometimes its creator, R.K. Milholland, has some profound truths to share with others.

Descriptions & transcripts for the visually impaired:

Something * Positive, a four-panel webcomic dealing with noir humor, life, and weirdness.

The characters for today are PamJee, a young Asian girl with sarcastic/sardonic tendencies who was adopted by PeeJee, an Asian woman who runs an online telephone/video service for computer repairs and other things, and Jason, her blond husband who directs stage plays for small theater companies, among other things.

PeeJee and Jason have always raised their daughter with a mixture of genuine love and a blunt acknowledgement of the awful things in life, plus plenty of mock-teasing. “Uncle Davan” is the best friend of PeeJee and Jason who is an honorary uncle to PamJee, and is the main character of the webcomic most days.

Here is the comic for March 24th, 2020:

PamJee: Ugh, why are you still here? Don’t you have an office?

PeeJee: You know I’m working from home for the same reason you’re not in school. We’ve gotta stay put during all this pandemic stuff.

[Next panel, still in the office; a tallish potted plant can be seen in the background. PamJee is eyeing her mother in disgruntlement, while PeeJee has her attention more on the papers in her hand than on her daughter.]

PamJee: Mom, nothing personal, but I’m tired of your face.

PeeJee: That’s okay, I’m kinda sick of yours.

[Third panel, PamJee is holding up her hands, eyes wide in shock, while PeeJee rolls her eyes at her daughter.]

PamJee: What the hell, Mom?! You’re not allowed to say that

PeeJee: Sweetheart, I think you need to learn this now. You can absolutely love someone with all your heart, and sometimes be kind of tired of their bullshit.

PamJee: This must be that “building character” crap Uncle Davan talks about, ‘cuz it’s really pissing me off.

Now that most of us are doing our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it often means being stuck in quarantine, having to live with our housemates for longer than the hours before & after work, school, whatever.

In this case, this is a profound piece of wisdom which really strikes hard at the way we need to understand interpersonal relationships with family members, friends, spouses, and so forth.

PeeJee: Sweetheart, I think you need to learn this now.

This is a very polite way for PeeJee to call her daughter on her attitude. Politeness, courtesy, patience, these are the watchwords for when you’re stuck in a situation that, for the good of many many others, you cannot change. It is a life-lesson that many people don’t actually learn. Not consciously.

In this case, the comic shows how--yet again--PeeJee and Jason are raising their kid to be more consciously aware of what is going on in life, both within herself and in the greater world around her. Sometimes these lessons are taught young, and sometimes they are self-taught. Sometimes they’re only subconsciously learned, but PamJee’s parents love her enough to give her straight talk about life lessons.

We are not being taught to think critically (as in critiquing, not criticizing) about our lives, by our society/culture. But it is a valuable thing to learn how to be self-aware of certain things. For instance, when I was going to college and having to wait up to an hour between busses to get there and back home again (if a class ran too late to catch the right one in the late afternoon), I eventually realized there was a difference between being patient, and being patient when you don’t want to be patient.

Why is this important? Because these are different life skills. Being patient when you want to be patient is, well, easy. You know it’ll be worthwhile. But being patient when you don’t want to be patient, that’s much more difficult. I could not change the bus schedule. I could not change how late the teacher would hold our classes. I could not change how far away from the bus stop my last class of the day might be, that quarter. I could not change anything when a bus driver coming early and choosing to leave early.

And since this was an era (early 1990s) when smart phones were still nothing more than a scifi fantasy, aka the tablet PADD thingies carried around by the actors on Star Trek: The Next Generation (aka they did not exist in real life!)...I had to learn how to accept having to wait, whether or not I wanted to wait. A lot of people subconsciously learn this lesson, but there was this one day that--I don’t know how or why--I woke to it consciously, and figured out that, being utterly bored, with nothing external to occupy my attention...I should entertain myself in my head by focusing on world-building and storytelling.

(This is the era in which the beginnings of the IaVerse got started, btw, so this little story is relevant to my author’s blog thing.)

PeeJee’s next speech-bubble in that scene, however, speaks to a subconscious side-effect of life in quarantine, trying to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

You can absolutely love someone with all your heart, and sometimes be kind of tired of their bullshit.

This is a truth. We may have to put up with each other for far longer spans of time than usual while in quarantine, and we may subconsciously be aware of the need for practicing politeness, courtesy, common sense, and so forth...but frictions will arise.

And you know what? That’s okay.

You can still love someone, and be tired of their bullshit at the same time.

You are allowed to have complex emotions.

You don’t have to be happy all the time!

However...you are still responsible for how you react, based on those feelings.

And it’s okay for others (or you if you’re the target of their reaction) to refuse to let that bullshit slide uncommented upon.

In this case, PeeJee does tell her daughter the absolute truth. Her daughter is giving her a rude comment, spurred by the restlessness of extra exposure to her parents due to quarantine, rather than having the respite of being at school away from them for several hours out of the day. So PeeJee gives right back to PamJee what PamJee gave her.

When PamJee is shocked by this...yes, parents aren’t normally supposed to say things like that to their kids. But there does come a point where this particular lesson does have to be learned.

Life is complex. Emotions are complex. Bullshit can only be tolerated so much before it must be called out for what it is: Bull. Shit.

And when PamJee goes to her father to complain, Jason is delivering a punchline, yes, and it may seem cruel, yes...but it also in a back-handed-compliment way implies that they take turns being Good Loving Parent-Cop and Bad Sarcastic Parent-Cop. It implies that both of them are always there to support her, even if they “take turns” while one or the other is calling her out on her growing-pains bullshit.

...Is it a normal family dynamic? No. But it is remarkably healthy all the same, in a similar vein to the Addams Family’s values. Because even while PamJee calls out her daughter’s rudeness, she reassures PamJee that she is absolutely loved.

“Unconditionally loved” in this case doesn’t mean “we’re going to ignore every bad thing you do around us.”

I’ll let you in on the secret as to why: Hatred (or even just calling someone out on their bullshit) isn’t the opposite of Love, folks. Apathy is the opposite. If her parents didn’t love her this much, they wouldn’t want to teach her to be conscious of having to remember to treat her family & friends with better courtesy, etc. Of having to be polite even when you don’t want to be polite, due to the irritation-raising frictions of having to spend excessive, extra amounts of time together.

Anyway, that’s it for the webcomic page analysis!

Stay as safe as you can, be as compassionate as you can, and try to be consciously courteous, folks! It’s a skill that most of us aren’t used to utilizing in such large amounts, but as in everything, it’ll get easier with practice.

Stranded: Day 9 - IMPENDING MORAL CRISIS

Oh CARP I forgot to post this yesterday... I’m sorry. Next chapter will be up on Thursday.

The Spider-Gang took shelter in an alley behind a Burger Monarch restaurant. Gwen inspected her left arm, which had taken quite a beating. It felt less numb now, and she could finally hold things in it without exerting a death grip. Since she was right-handed, it didn't matter too much.

"Where's Miles?" asked Noir.

Peter B. looked around frantically, as though Miles was still there but had turned invisible. "Oh no, he's not here. Miles! Miles, c'mere!"

"Can't believe you lost him again," commented Ham.

"I, no, I didn't lose him. He's just… he's just… something happened to his uncle. They'll both be okay? I think?"

Peni's face was impassive. "The Prowler's dead."

"How do you know?"

"Sp/dr has infrared scanners. He's in the next alley over."

"Is Miles over there?" asked Gwen.

"Uh, no. Just a couple of cops."

Oh, this wasn't good at all. Miles was in no shape to help out at this point, considering that the poor kid's uncle had just died. She was going to have to sacrifice herself. But that was okay if it meant that everybody else stayed safe.

"We need to find Miles," Peter B. said. His brows were set in a hard line.

IMPENDING MORAL CRISIS

Gwen knew that her spider-sense could help her find Miles. She knew that the Spider-Gang could comfort him. But was it really the right choice? Was having a load really the best idea? Would he die if he came along?

She shook her head. "No. We shouldn't. We need to get to the collider now. Miles would… he'll just slow us down."

"Then who will stay behind?" asked Noir.

"I will," said Gwen and Peter B. simultaneously. They looked at each other.

"It's okay if I die. There's nothing left for me back home, anyway," said Peter B. calmly. "My wife's gone… well not really, but kind of. There are other heroes in my dimension: Ricochet, Prodigy, Sable, just to name a few. The public… isn't super fond of me. I won't be missed much."

"Yes, you will. Your wife… your ex-wife will miss you. So will all the people you've helped, and all the people who've helped you.

"And I'm supposed to be dead. Don't you get it? Why do you think the media calls me Ghost Spider? Why do you think all the heroes in other dimensions are like you, not like me? Why is Gwen Stacy dead in every dimension but mine? I shouldn't be alive!"

Peter B. adopted a soothing tone. "Yes, you should be. You're a hero in your world. You've saved plenty of people, including your own dad."

Gwen's voice started to break, and she exerted all her willpower to hold herself together. "I'm no hero. I killed my own best friend! And I'll fight tooth and nail to make sure I don't have to see Peter Parker die again!"

"And I'd do the same for Gwen Stacy."

Gwen balled her hands into fists. "Not if I have anything to say about that."

Ham spoke up. "Woah woah woah. Nobody's gonna die. We just… need to figure out what to do with Miles."

IMPENDING MORAL CRISIS

Again, Gwen was struck with a ray of hope. Miles couldn't be the MILES OF INTEREST for no reason. But at the same time, she couldn't put all her faith in someone else, especially if that somebody had already been proven unreliable. She could only rely on herself. That was one reason why she didn't want to let friends help. Gwen couldn't control friends, but she could control herself.

At the same time, she owed it to Miles to help him feel better.

Where was Miles?

VISION OF BROOKLYN

Gwen exhaled. "I know where Miles is. Follow me."

Of course, as she remembered only when the Spider-Gang reached Visions Academy, she didn't know which part of the building he was in.

That question was answered a couple seconds later, when Noir caught a book that had been cast out of a third-story window. Miles' name was on the cover. Noir threw the book back through the window, and the Spider-Gang followed it in.

Miles' room looked like that of any teenager, except in even more disarray. He must have had a roommate, since there was a bunk bed, neither level of which was properly made. (Not that Gwen was judging, as she only made her bed when her dad forced her to.) Clothes were strewn across the floor, as were his books and notes. They looked like they had been recently scattered. Gwen, not known for her tidiness, knew that even her room at home wasn't as messy as this one.

Amidst the mess stood Miles, looking just as disjointed as did his room. He wiped a tear from his eye as he looked up at Peter B.

"Hey buddy," said Peter B. "You all right?"

Miles turned aside and softly shook his head.

Peter B. laid his hand on Miles' shoulder. "We've all been there. For me, it was my Uncle Ben."

Noir replicated the gesture. "For me, it was my Uncle Benjamin."

"For me, it was my dad," said Peni.

Gwen blinked hard. "For me, it was my best friend."

"Miles, the hardest thing about this job is that you can't save everybody," added Ham.

She couldn't help but smile. Though he was a goofy cartoon character, Ham was probably the wisest member of the bunch, if not the smartest one. It likely had something to do with him having been a superhero for 35 years.

"But, but I feel like it's my fault," said Miles. "You wouldn't understand."

Gwen remembered a dreary day in school, limping between classes, an unending bell tolling in her head. She remembered an even worse night afterwards, the bell striking the insides of her skull. The bell was still there, ringing more softly now, but she had given up on muffling it. It would slow to a stop eventually, but it wouldn't go away.

Miles needed to learn what had taken her two years to understand.

"Miles, we're probably the only people who do understand."

PERSONS TAKING NOTICE

Gwen saw the door handle rattle.

"Oh no, it's Ganke," said Miles.

Everybody jumped onto the ceiling just before a stocky young Asian fellow wearing headphones walked in. He sat down in the rolling chair and pulled out a comic book. As Ganke slid to the left, the spiders scrambled right, trying to stay out of his field of vision. When he spun to the right, they moved left.

Finally, inevitably, the kid looked up and saw everybody.

PERSONS TAKING NOTICE

"Hey," Miles said awkwardly.

"Do animals talk in this dimension?" asked Ham. "'Cuz I don't wanna freak him out."

Ganke passed out.

Gwen helped Miles drag his roommate into bed while Peni, Noir, and Ham left the room. After he pulled the covers over him, Miles turned around to see only Peter B. standing there. Gwen was halfway out the window.

"What's going on?"

IMPENDING MORAL CRISIS

She looked down. She really didn't want to leave Miles behind. But she had to. For his sake. For everybody else's sake. Peter B. might have deluded himself into thinking that he would save everybody, or that Miles could, but Gwen needed to sacrifice herself.

But would Peter B. listen to her? He never seemed to. He always had his own agenda. Sure, it was understandable, seeing that he was a loner. Maybe he didn't want anybody else in on his plans because he didn't trust anyone? But how would Gwen make him see that Miles couldn't help? How would she make him see that he couldn't stay behind?

As little as she trusted herself to handle the situation, she was the only person who could.

"Bye, Miles."

Gwen hopped out of the window.

Noir, Ham, and Sp//dr clung to the other side of the wall, listening in on Peter B. and Miles. Noir waved for Gwen to join them. As much as she wanted to get on with saving the multiverse, she wanted to stay. Friendship prevailed over duty in this instance.

This was why Gwen didn't want to make friends. They would get in the way, just like Miles would have. They would get hurt, just like Peter had been.

But did that make them bad to have?

Gwen stopped worrying about herself and listened.

Should she be here?

SURE

"You're not getting it. You're staying here."

"I need to be there, so you all can get home."

"They are going home. I'm the only one staying."

That's what he thought.

"But if you stay here, you'll die."

"I'm doing what needs to be done. I just wanted you to hear it from me."

"What about MJ?"

A heavy pause.

"Not everything works out, kid. I need the goober."

Wait, Miles still had the goober?

"Don't make me take it from you."

Miles sounded agitated, like he was drawing on his last reserves of conviction. "But that's not fair! Tell them I can do this!"

"It wasn't their decision."

"But, but I gotta make Kingpin pay! Let me make him pay!"

"You're gonna get yourself killed if you do that."

"But I'm ready! I promise!"

He wasn't ready. He wasn't ready. What would it take to make Miles understand that?

Gwen heard thumping.

Peter B.'s voice sounded like it was coming from higher up than before. "Then venom-strike me right now. Or turn invisible, on command, so you can get past me."

Miles strained. He gritted his teeth and growled. But, apparently, nothing happened.

Gwen couldn't help but feel bad for him.

His devotion to friends wasn't going to help him. He needed to be broken of the habit before he got himself killed.

"Poor little guy," Noir muttered under his breath.

"I know how much you want this… but you don't have it yet. I'm sorry."

Webshooters fired repeatedly.

"When will I know I'm ready?" asked Miles.

"You won't. It's a leap of faith."

Peter B. climbed out the window and joined the rest of the Spider-Gang. They swung back into the city in silence.

IDK, man. There’s this one quote that I lived by for a long time. Probably still do, tbh. It’s like “God doesn’t give you any more than he knows you can handle.” And I used to tell that to Lemon a lot. Cuz she had like. Aside from my mom, like one of the worst lives I’ve ever heard of. Like. Her mom died of a speedball on Thanksgiving when she was like 8 right when her dad and her were about to get back together. He spiraled and was a hard drug addict. Was in prison most of his life. The SWAT officers knew her because of her dad. Etc etc stuff like that and way more that I’m not going to discuss cuz some of it’s real awful.

ANYWAY

She’d vent and cry when we’d hang out and I’d tell her that, and I think that helped her and made her feel better. Well, recently, I was watching a crime doc and a dude had his wife abducted and murdered, but he didn’t know for like 20 years. And the cops had him as the main suspect and he lost his job and friends and all this shit cuz the community thought he did it when he didn’t (the real killer eventually got caught). But he said this. Really profound thing that has stuck with me since and he was crying and was like “I know God doesn’t give you anything you can’t handle. But sometimes I wish he didn’t trust me so much.”

IDK it just kinda stuck with me, and I was thinkin’ about it tonight, cuz I was thinking about Lemon. And there were a lot of nights she’d cry into my shirt saying “I know you said God wouldn’t give me anything I can’t handle, but this is hard” and it was really hard to deal with that. But that guy makes me think of her.

I went to church like a year ago when some bad shit was going on with me and one of the things they said was “God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called.”

And like. That made me feel really good cuz. If any of y’all are long followers, you know what my last couple of years have been like. And I almost gave in more than I’d like to admit, but hearing that made me hopeful. That I could help someone through my suffering.

I’m not suffering now. I have bumps but I’m not suffering, and I used to “joke” about dying but kinda hoping it would happen. I don’t anymore, I really like living. And some of my suffering, like my tumor, for instance, it’s a blessing rn in my life I’m so glad it happened it put so much perspective in my life and helped me grow as a person.

IDK. I’m not even sure why I’m writing this. I just feel. A way today lmao

But I think that through some hard, terrible parts of your life, you can help someone. And I’’ve had some people say that to me through my experiences. The experience doesn’t define you, it just accentuates your best parts and reveals your true strength

Bleh. Anyway. IDK. I just wanted to get some thoughts out. You can ignore this

Progressive auto insurance problem !?

I need an opinion on what should i do in this case. 3 weeks ago , as I was driving home , on the freeway , from the truck in front of me fell big peace of ice and hit my car from underneath. Less than 1 minute later i noticed blue smoke behind , luckily there was and exit with gas station right there. By the time i pulled up to the gas station car was barely moving. After staying parked for 20 min , it leaked oil and tranny fluid . I called towing , had them pick the car up , called progressive made the claim. All of that happened in WI near Milwaukee , before i used to leave in Chicago , so I never dealt with progressive from WI. After couple days adjuster came out and gave shop 1100$ to start the repairs , shop diagnosed everything and came to a conclusion that its the transmission leaking because of the damage inside. Adjuster was extremely slow to give shop any kind of approvals to do anything , So after 3 weeks they finally allowed them to take transmission apart , another adjuster came out took pictures , then shop owner want around , called me and said that he will call me next day. Next day shop owner calls me asking if I heard anything from progressive ? I call that guy back , but he went on vacation. Call my first adjuster , she says that the guy who went on vacation concluded that it wasn't related to impact , so they wont pay for anything and I owe 500 for taking down transmission. I called shop owner right away asking if its possible , not being related to impact , he says of course not , otherwise your car wouldn't break after impact. He also said some technical explanation what caused it to break , i just don't know what. he also said that no one ever called him and asked him what was the cause if that. I dealt with progressive in Chicago twice , when i lived there , and i had greatest experience ever , but it seems that in Milwaukee , they are playing games , making me pay , and not taking responsibilities. I figured somebody might know what should I do in this case , I just want them to do what they should do , especially when Im paying 200$ a month.""

Hi, I would really appreciate if someone could give me an answer to resolve this situation: Facts: 1- I legally own a car in the US, currently I'm overseas. 2- My friend has a complete power of attorney 3- Car was registered in California and now is staying in Virginia for almost a year. 4- I put the car on Nonoperational status with CA DMV and canceled insurance in 08.2008. 5- I need to make my car drivable again, and my friend has to move it to MD where she lives. 6- To put car back on road with CA plates I should renew the registration with CA DMV. 7- CA DMV requires the liability insurance before registration. 8- My friend was at the insurance company (Progressive Insurance) and they say, they cannot insure the car with Californian liability unless the car is physically in CA. Wnen I'll be back to US in couple of months I have to drive car back to CA, because I study there so my residence is CA. Should I pay my car insurance premium?

I purchased a car for my daughter last August and paid the annual premium. In November the insurance company said I cancelled her coverage and they issued me a refund for the remainder of the policy year (thru July). I didn't know what the refund was for, but deposited the check anyway. I don't know what I did to cancel coverage (for just this vehicle, all my other vehicles remain covered.) I don't dispute that I must have done something.... In April I found out I didn't have coverage for this car by my accidentally calling the insurance company about another question. I asked for them to reinstate the coverage immediately. They did and sent me a bill for the full amount of the refund, plus another $176. I feel I should only pay insurance for the remaining two months on this year's policy since, if I would have had an accident, the insurance company would not have covered me. They say they can't charge me for just the remaining two months, but that they have to bill me the full amount (plus what's with the additional $176 charge?)
