Book Review
Have you ever wanted to learn more about the fighters that made boxing such a great sport? Most of these fighters made up the golden age of boxing, and some of these fighters were Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, or Rocky Marciano. I wanted to learn more about these fighters and how they got so great, so I found the book "The Boxing Kings" by Paul Beston. The book covers a lot of famous fighters during this golden age and what makes them different from any other fighter. I would definitely recommend reading the book because the more that you know the history behind something, the more you appreciate it.
In the book, there is a whole chapter about Kid Dynamite and how he became so famous through boxing. At just thirteen years old, Cus D'Amato already saw a lot in his future. Why is that? Even at a young age, Mike Tyson had incredibly powerful punches. Being coached by D'Amato, Tyson developed a very brutal style of boxing. His goal was to hit and hit hard without toying with any of his punches, primarily using his knockout punches consisting of his heavy left hook, uppercuts, or his right cross. Combining his great power with great speed and defense is what made his style one of the toughest in the sport. In the book, it says that "He was a knockout artist with defense, a puncher who didn't get punched much himself."
There are 11 more chapters just like this one that give a ton of information on exactly what I'm looking for. While it does give more information about the history and biography of these individual boxers, it also gives some insight into what makes the boxers unique and what style of fighting they use to be successful. The book mentions a lot about Muhammad Ali. In one of my previous posts, I used one of these chapters as a source to back up some of my research on my topic. The book talks a lot about how Muhammad Ali got into boxing, and I think it is interesting to see how such a famous boxer started small, just like anyone else.
My favorite chapter in the book is the one about Rocky Marciano. Starting off as a very uncoordinated fighter with terrible form, Rocky proved himself in a sparring match with Wade Chancey; using his devastating punch, he was able to knock Wade out instantly. In my opinion, I think that it is interesting how Rocky had such terrible boxing skills when he first started, and yet he was destined to be a great boxer sheerly from his solid punches and his iron determination. Looking at his background in other sports, Rocky also played baseball and football in the past. This is definitely a big contributing factor to Rocky's beginning in boxing, and this is because a lot of sports can help people be better boxers. For example, uppercuts use a lot of leg strength and explosiveness. A physical trait like this could be achieved through a sport like track or football, and Rocky used to play football in his youth.
The book does a good job of telling the story of Rocky Marciano's rise to fame, and it also does a good job of teaching readers about the history of boxing. Reading the book has opened my eyes to the vast difference in fighters, and the similarities shared between them as well. I think that new boxers or people wanting to learn more about the sport should read this book because it mentions a lot of key points in boxing.

On a November night in 1986, a crowd gathered in Las Vegas for an event that was hyped as "Judgement Day.” At the center of it all was a boxing ring with a referee and two fighters: Mike Tyson and Trevor Berbick.
Tyson was 20 years old and hoping to become the youngest ever heavyweight champion. Today he says he never would have been in that ring if it weren't for trainer Constantine "Cus" D'Amato, a man Muhammad Ali once called "the bible of boxing." According to Tyson, D'Amato is the reason he had such a legendary career. Now, he’s written a book about his time with the trainer. It’s called Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D'Amato.
NPR’s David Greene interviewed Tyson at his home in Las Vegas.

The Cornerman - one of the most invaluable allies/assets a Boxer has in a fight.  They are part General/Strategist, part Physician, part Psychologist, part Nutritionist, 100% inspiration, and all respect.
Before the fight, a Cornerman's job is to mentally prepare the boxer for battle, shielding their mental state from any fear, anxiety, doubt with positive statements & reinforcements.  And they also temper their brawler's enthusiasm, if they see any signs of over-confidence/ego.
In addition, the Cornerman must prepare the Boxer's body for the beating about to ensue, making sure he doesn’t go into the match cold, as dominance is best established quickly in the first round. Thus, the Cornerman will ensure his fighter is properly warmed up, primed/ready.  Warm, not hot. Tempered.
Before the bell, as the fighters enter the ring, the Cornerman will immediately size up the opponent, building a quick initial strategy based on size/differential/posture/style. That fast, accurate, glance assessment comes from keen intuition based on years of observing carnage in the ring.  No text book/Ivy League/Rhodes Scholar/Stephen A. Smith advice wanted here whatsoever.  Only the Cornerman's.
And when the bell rings, as the crowd roars & roots for their chosen ringster, the Corner Man's job is to assess both fighter's strength/strategy/dexterity/endurance/weaknesses.  Though the temptation will be to take his bruiser's side, he must remain objective/non-prejudiced/truthful.  And while doing so, he must build an effective strategy to influence his boxer toward victory.
And in between rounds, during the precious sanctuary minute, this is where the Corner Man really gleams.  He's only got one minute to assess the integrity of his fighter - determine whether or not the fight shall continue, and if so, with what battle plan. And within that same 60 seconds, they've got to get their fighter to rest/recover, stop any bleeding/swelling, cleanup, oxygenate, cool down, dictate clear/quick/effective strategy & any information  gleaned on the opponent's weaknesses, & then empower/invigorate that same fist pounded mutt before sending them back on their merry way to withstand the next salvo of bloody cruise missile punches.  Who said warfare ain't fast and pretty?
Shout out to some of the greatest Cornermen in boxing history…Ray Arcel (Frazier/Duran/Holmes), Chuck Bodack (Ali/Marciano/Chavez/Holyfield/De La Hoya), Rafael Garcia (Vargas/Mayweather), the legendary Cus D'Amato (Ali/Patterson/Tyson), & the incomparable Freddie Roach (Pacquiao).  Though boxing is an intensely individual sport, it can be strongly argued that none of those bruisers would've ever stood a chance without their trusted Cornerman at their side.
So Warrior, do you have someone who trains you to eat lightnin' and crap thunder? Someone who brutally tells you like it is, and not how it should be?  And who stitches you back together in between rounds and inspires you full force to get back in the fight?
Who do you have in your corner?

Its a manual on how greatness achieved. This is the first REAL book on cus damato, both his work with mike as well as an extremely detailed account of his life fighting the mob while taking patterson to the title. This is a must read. As a fan of tyson and of cus, ive been waiting 20 years for this book to be written... ever since reading about how cus wanted jose torres to write his story about how cus turned mike into a champion. Well, that book was never written. Instead, torres wrote Fire and Fear, which was NOT what cus had intended. This is the book cus wanted written about himself. This is his legacy. Mike has proven himself to be cus' most dedicated and most valuable student. First he won the title, fulfilling cus' final prediction, and now, 30 years after his death, mike has written a biography WORTHY of cus to ensure his legacy lasts forever. Thanks for writing this book, mike. Its not just that it teaches us about cus, but about his beliefs and methods regarding how to transform a weak person into a strong one. This is a book the world needs. Go to Amazon

Also in this documentary one may learn about the opinion that claims that Tyson integrated the system of "52 Block" into his technique, which was the reason of his victories, and why some people try to attempt to create public opinion that role of Cus D'Amato in Mike Tyson's life was a conditional one. ___ In the movie: Oleg Maltsev Ph.D., Founder and Head of the "Research Institute of World Martial Art Traditions Study and Criminalistic Research of Weapon Handling" Tom Patti One of the last fighters to live with Cus D'Amato Current Elected Official Larry "Ratso" Sloman Co-author with Mike Tyson of bestselling books: "Undisputed Truth", "Iron Ambition" Tursunbaeva Kanykei Correspondent Scientific employee at the "Research Institute of World Martial Art Traditions Study and Criminalistic Research of Weapon Handling" #CusDamato #OlegMaltsev #TomPatti #LarrySloman #MikeTyson #Patterson #Torres #Peekaboo #MartialArts #ConstantineDamato #CatskillBoxingClub #CusDamatoCatskillBoxingGym #PeekabooBoxing #liesandtruth #WorldChampion #IronMike

After finishing work on the book about the style of Сus D'Amato "Non-compromised pendulum", there was an idea to create a new book which is going to be called “Lighting rod that strikes faster then lightning itself”. I will try to explain why there was an idea to write the second book and what we are assuming this book to be. We are "contemplating" as in fact we cannot state anything exact yet. As you remember from the chapter about the phenomenon of Cus D'Amato in the book  "Non-compromised pendulum", one of the components of the phenomenon of Cus himself - is his origin. Certainly, life and place of origin of his family, later on his life in the Italian quarter of Bronx had a great impact on Cus from psychological and material aspects. These factors influenced his formation, further life and the structure of knowledge that he possessed accordingly. Any psychologist will confirm that such factors have a cornerstone effect on one’s personality.
Our main task is to write an honest book about the origin of the style of Cus D'Amato. In the end, we will get irrefutable evidence regarding the connection between Neapolitan fencing and the style of Cus D'Amato, or recognize the fallacy of the hypothesis and illustrate it with evidence. In the meantime, we are starting our work on the second book, getting prepared for an expedition to Bari, homeland of the D'Amato family. The goal one it is to find the truth and find out what impact had the family environment, heredity, environment on the formation of the style of Cus - the greatest coach who nurtured three world boxing champions.
Ph.D. Oleg Maltsev Author of the book “Lighting rod that strikes faster then lightning itself”.

... Tyson is an extraordinary man who never ceases to amaze me. He's one of the most awesome individuals ... Mike Tyson is an extraordinary man who never ceases to amaze me. He's one of the most awesome individuals to ever lace on gloves. Like many great boxers he hit the skids, went to jail and lost it all. But then, incredibly and almost unbelievably, he rose from the ashes like the Phoenix and became the upstanding man he is today. Tyson is a good writer who tells how Cus D'Amato rescued him from the mean streets of New York and a dismal future and helped him become a fighter and a man. The story gets a little bogged down in the telling of D'Amato's trials and run-ins with Frankie Carbo and Blinky Palermo and the mob who controlled boxing in the 1950's. But it's a good read with lots of good anecdotes about D'Amato's relationships with Floyd Patterson and Jose Torres. Go to Amazon

Phenomenal and insightful look into a great mind This book was exhilarating and exceptionally well written. I have not read a book in some time, but avowed that I would read over 10 books this summer, starting with this one. Go to Amazon
Thanks Mike and Ratso This book is one of those very rare special ones, that you can't stand to put down. It will have you up at night. Amazing lessons and stories on topics spanning the punic wars, hypnosis, mob death threats, to the psychology of Eric Hoffer. This is not some theoretical BS self help book, its the real life story of the blueprint of champions. As another reviewer stated, it is a manual on the achievement of greatness. Go to Amazon
I never read 400+ pages so quickly! Must read for any fan of boxing history! This is the best, most informative work on Cus D'Amato to date. I consider myself somewhat of a Tyson and D'Amato historian... There's a wealth of information I've never heard. Ratso did his homework for sure! Not as entertaining as Tysons Undisputed Truth, which was exciting from the first page to the last. There's allot more historical stuff in this though. Lot's of old Floyd Patterson stories, mob stories, IBC, etc... I highly recommend this book if you're a Tyson or D'Amato fan, or if you're interested in boxing history. Great read! Go to Amazon
What an amazing chronicle of D'amato out of the mind boxing's youngest ... I like Tyson's first book a lot Misleading Title I thought I knew it all. In this book Tyson and writer weave intimate, new detail into a seamless tale that reads like fiction. Five Stars Five Stars
