The Boy Who Would Be King: The Epic Journey of Mike Tyson
By Joseph Correa
Early Life and Challenges: The Streets of Brownsville
Born into Adversity: In 1966, in the harsh environs of Brownsville, Brooklyn, Mike Tyson's story began. Raised without a father and amidst relentless poverty, Tyson faced challenges that would shape his future in profound ways. The streets of Brownsville were rife with violence, a daily reality for young Tyson. These early experiences instilled in him a fighter's instinct, a survival mechanism in a world that offered little compassion.
The Bully Becomes the Boxer: Tyson's early years were marred by bullying, leading to frequent school absences and run-ins with the law. However, this very turmoil set the stage for his future in boxing. The aggression that once was a source of trouble became his greatest asset in the ring.
Rise to Fame: From Raw Strength to Boxing Prodigy
Discovery and Direction: At 10, Tyson's life took a pivotal turn. A local youth center trainer spotted his innate strength and aggression, recognizing the potential for a future in boxing. This discovery gave Tyson a much-needed direction, channeling his turbulent energy into a disciplined pursuit.
Amateur Success and the Road to Professional Boxing: Tyson's entry into the boxing world was meteoric. His natural talent and intense training led to a string of victories in the amateur circuit. By 13, he had already claimed multiple titles, signaling the rise of a new powerhouse in the sport.
The Cus D'Amato Influence: A Mentorship That Changed Everything
Meeting the Mentor: In 1980, Tyson's journey intersected with Cus D'Amato, a legendary boxing trainer. D'Amato saw in Tyson a boxer with raw talent and a young man needing guidance. He became a father figure to Tyson, offering him not just training in the sport but life lessons.
The Making of a Champion: Under D'Amato's mentorship, Tyson transformed. He developed a unique boxing style characterized by explosive speed and overwhelming power. D'Amato's influence extended beyond techniques, instilling in Tyson a sense of discipline and control that was previously missing.
Peak and Downfall: The Youngest Heavyweight Champion and Beyond
Reaching the Zenith: By 1986, at the age of 20, Tyson had reached the zenith of his career, becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in history. His rise was rapid and spectacular, marked by a series of stunning victories that left the boxing world in awe.
The Downward Spiral: However, the fame that came with his success was a double-edged sword. Tyson's life became a public spectacle, marked by excesses and poor choices. Surrounded by opportunists and caught in a cycle of self-destructive behavior, Tyson's career and personal life began to unravel.
Redemption and Legacy: A Journey Towards Inner Peace and Transformation
Facing the Abyss: The early 1990s were not just a downfall for Mike Tyson but a descent into a personal abyss. The loss to Buster Douglas, which shocked the world, was but a precursor to a more profound personal and legal battle that led to Tyson's incarceration. This period marked the nadir of Tyson's life when the once invincible champion faced his most formidable opponent yet: himself.
Confronting the Man in the Mirror: Tyson encountered an unavoidable confrontation with his identity behind bars. Stripped of the fame, the entourage, and the roar of the crowds, he was left with the raw essence of who he had become. It was a period of intense self-reflection and soul-searching. Tyson delved into literature, philosophy, and self-help, seeking answers and understanding. These years were transformative, serving as a crucible that reshaped his identity.
Emerging with New Purpose: When Tyson emerged from prison, he was not the same Man who had entered. The physicality of the boxer remained, but there was a newfound depth to his persona. He returned to the ring to reclaim past glories and, as a man, on a mission to redefine his legacy. While flashes of his former prowess surfaced, it was clear that Tyson's actual fight was no longer in the ring but in the arena of personal growth and redemption.
A Voice for the Voiceless: Tyson's journey turned towards helping others. He became an outspoken advocate for mental health, using his platform to speak candidly about his struggles with depression, addiction, and the demons of his past. Tyson transformed his narrative from one of a fallen star to a beacon of hope for those facing similar battles.
Raw Courage and Vulnerability: In his one-man show, best-selling memoir, and therapy podcast, Tyson laid bare his soul. He spoke of his trials and tribulations with a raw honesty that was shocking and deeply moving. These weren't just confessions, but lessons in humility, resilience, and the human capacity for change.
Inspiring a New Generation: Tyson's legacy is no longer defined solely by his achievements in the ring. It's marked by his courage to face his past, to own his mistakes, and to use his experiences to inspire and support others. His story resonates with boxing fans and anyone seeking redemption and a second chance in life.
A Living Testament: Today, Mike Tyson is a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. His story is a vivid tapestry of triumph, despair, and redemption. The narrative reminds us that even the hardest of exteriors beats a heart capable of profound change and deep compassion.

You guys will be talking a lot about #MikeTyson today. But what you might not be talking about is the fact that his foster mother was Ukrainian.
Ukrainian-born Camille Ivashchuk, was Tyson's foster mother and closest confidant. Camille was also the common-law wife of his trainer Cus D'Amato.
She was born in 1905 in the village of Staromyshchyna in Ukraine's Ternopil region, and then moved to Canada with her family at the age of 5, where they changed their surname to Ewald.
Camille met D'Amato through her sister, who was married to his brother. Although they never formally married, the couple lived together in Catskill, where D'Amato founded a boxing gym for at-risk youth, often holding training sessions on the roof of the local police station. Camille's house became a refuge for many of the boys D'Amato mentored, though the couple had no children of their own.
D'Amato, a strict trainer, was often stern with Tyson and the other boxers, but Camille showed them kindness. She made sure the boys were well-fed and took the time to listen to their problems. She also encouraged Tyson and the others to help out around the house.
When Tyson's mother passed away when he was 16, D'Amato and Camille officially took custody of him. D'Amato even asked Camille, "What do you think about him?" to which Camille responded with a hug, and Tyson began calling her "Mom."
When Camille passed away in 2001, Tyson said at her funeral, “I was very lucky that she blessed me with her love and took care of me for most of my life. I will miss her terribly." 💔🇺🇦

Burt Young, who played Paulie in the Rocky franchise, was actually trained by Cus D'Amato (who trained Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson) and went 17-0 as a professional.
According to Wikipedia: Young served a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959. While in the Marine Corps, he won 32 of 34 boxing bouts. He later turned pro and compiled a 17-0 record under three different aliases. His manager was Cus D'Amato.

About to info dump on a subject I take part in, but I think TMNT Mutant Mayhem did something that was genius and I'm not sure if they even realize that.
In the after credit scene at the prom, we see Raph show two other students how he would box and he took up the peek-a-boo style pose, a style created my Cus D'amato for boxers like Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres and most famously, Mike Tyson.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, though Tyson is known for being a furious infighter, the peek-a-boo style was all about offense and incredible defense. Even on Cus' death bed, he couldn’t emphasise enough to Tyson to "Move your head" and to make sure his defense is just as good as his offense.
And Raph, not only is he the most vicious of the turtles, his weapons, the twin sai, are defensive tools.
He took up a boxing style that fits him perfectly. The film makers are either geniuses or didn't something genius by complete accident.

"What's the difference between a hero and a coward? There ain't no difference. Inside they're both exactly alike. Both scared of dying or getting hurt. But it's what the hero does that makes him a hero. What the other guy doesn't do that makes him a coward." --"Cus" D'Amato, Mike Tyson's trainer

Sonny Liston & Floyd Patterson: A Clash of Titans
The world of boxing has always been filled with thrilling rivalries and unforgettable matchups. One of the most significant and intriguing rivalries in the sport's history was between Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson. These two fighters, with their contrasting styles and personalities, captivated the boxing world in the early 1960s. Their battles were not just physical confrontations but also symbolized the clash of different worlds within the sport.
Floyd Patterson: The Gentle Champion
Floyd Patterson, born on January 4, 1935, in Waco, North Carolina, was the epitome of a gentleman boxer. He rose from a difficult childhood to become the youngest heavyweight champion in history at the age of 21. Patterson was known for his humility, discipline, and a fighting style that combined speed, agility, and precision. Under the guidance of his legendary trainer, Cus D'Amato, Patterson developed a unique "peek-a-boo" defensive style, where he held his gloves close to his face, ready to unleash quick, powerful punches.
Patterson's rise to the top was marked by his victory over Archie Moore in 1956, which earned him the heavyweight title. However, despite his success, Patterson was often criticized for his lack of a powerful punch and his vulnerability to stronger opponents. Nevertheless, he held the title with grace and dignity, becoming a beloved figure in the boxing community.
Sonny Liston: The Fearsome Enigma
In stark contrast to Patterson, Sonny Liston was a fearsome and intimidating figure. Born on May 8, 1932, in Sand Slough, Arkansas, Liston's life story was shrouded in mystery and controversy. With a powerful build, a devastating punch, and a menacing presence, Liston quickly made a name for himself as one of the most feared fighters in the sport. His rise through the ranks was marked by a series of brutal knockouts, and by the early 1960s, he had become the number-one contender for the heavyweight title.
Liston's persona was a stark contrast to Patterson's. He was often portrayed as the "bad guy" of boxing, with rumors of his connections to organized crime and a troubled past. Despite his reputation, Liston's skill in the ring was undeniable. He possessed a powerful jab, a granite chin, and an aura of invincibility that made him a formidable opponent.
The Showdowns: David vs. Goliath
The first fight between Patterson and Liston took place on September 25, 1962, at Comiskey Park in Chicago. It was billed as a classic "David vs. Goliath" matchup, with Patterson as the smaller, more agile champion, and Liston as the imposing challenger. However, the fight turned out to be a one-sided affair. Liston overpowered Patterson from the opening bell, knocking him out in the first round to become the new heavyweight champion.
The rematch on July 22, 1963, in Las Vegas was equally devastating for Patterson. Once again, Liston dispatched the champion in the first round, solidifying his dominance in the heavyweight division. These two fights marked a turning point in boxing history, as Liston's reign of terror in the ring began, and Patterson's career started to decline.
Legacy and Impact
The rivalry between Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson was more than just a series of fights. It symbolized the clash of different worlds and the complexities of the sport. Patterson represented the clean-cut, disciplined athlete, while Liston embodied the darker, more enigmatic side of boxing. Despite their differences, both men left an indelible mark on the sport.
Patterson went on to have a successful career, fighting some of the biggest names in boxing, including Muhammad Ali. He is remembered as a true gentleman of the sport, a man who faced adversity with grace and resilience. Liston, on the other hand, continued to be a controversial figure until his untimely death in 1970. His life and career remain shrouded in mystery, and he is often remembered as one of boxing's most enigmatic champions.
The Liston-Patterson rivalry is a testament to the drama and excitement that boxing can offer. It reminds us that the sport is not just about physical prowess but also about the stories and personalities that make it so compelling.
