Class Feature Friday: Shadow Bloodline (Bloodrager Bloodline)

They say that anger is a “dark emotion”, and nowhere is that more literal than with those bloodragers that call upon the power of darkness.

While the kyton bloodline does exist for bloodragers, today we’re looking at those whose power comes specifically from the Plane of Shadows and darkness itself, rather than the denizens that now dwell there.

While other shadow-focused specializations often focus on subtlety and the mutability of shadow magic, there is nothing subtle about these bloodragers, and I think its apt to say that they very much play up a “monster in the dark” sort of vibe, draining light around them and overwhelming foes while they are bewildered and fearful.

This bloodline is most likely to show up wherever the plane of shadow is close, whether it be from the energies of the plane directly, a heritage linked to the shae or fetchlings, or something more bizarre.

Regardless, this bloodline might physically manifest in a variety of ways, such as having a shadow that moves with a life of its own, or perhaps a person whose features seem always to be in shadow, no matter the angle. Some might seem ephemeral in direct light, but very solid in dim conditions, and so on.

 Living as they do in darkness, these warriors rely on all their sense, and react quickly to them, learning various techniques to make fighting in the dark and against various threats much easier.

Their magic also bears the mark of the shadow, and they are never without spells to drain the energy of foes, enhance their own nightvision, blanket areas in supernatural darkness, or conjure forth allies and/or other things from shadow.

When they enter their rage, the senses of these warrior grow incredibly acute, enhancing whatever forms of vision they already possess.

That is especially helpful, for as they grow in power, they seem to suck the light from an area with their fury, reducing natural light levels.

Icy cold is often associated with a lack of light, and not only do these ragers become supernaturally resistant to such cold, they can also channel it sometimes through their weapons, though mostly only through particularly grievous blows. Eventually, such cold no longer harms them at all.

Using their foe’s own shadow as a conduit, they can sometimes strike a foe through their shadow, bypassing many protections as wounds manifest on their body.

Shadow magic can also be used as a gateway, and shadow bloodragers of sufficient power can step between shadows, for a certain amount of total distance a day, allowing them to approach from any angle as long as the area isn’t bright.

The most powerful of these bloodragers, however, become perfect avatars of darkness, seeing through all darkness as if it were daylight, and sapping the strength from the bodies of those they attack with every blow.

Since darkness is such a big factor in concealment, these bloodragers can both use it to their advantage by ambushing from the dark and carrying it with them as they rage, but also use their enhanced senses to negate the advantage of those who would do the same. With that in mind, pretty much any basic bloodrager build can do a lot here, but I recommend one based around mobility, since you’ll want your area of darkness to cover as many foes as possible at one time, not to mention overwhelm foes by attacking from many different angles.

 Though darkness is often associated with evil, your bloodrager need not be. Certainly others may be intimidated and judgemental given the sinister-seeming nature of their powers, but it is up to the player to decide where they want to go with that. Perhaps they have risen above that prejudice, or succumbed to it. Certainly their greatest allies will be those who also walk in shadow.

  Though portrayed as a sinister race by humans, the strix are no more inherently evil than any other mortal heritage. Not even the Owl clan, who cling closely to their connection to the syrinx. However, that connection to those avian overlords and their uncanny mastery over shadows keeps them at arm’s length in most peaceful encounters.

 The current captain of the griffon riders of Halbreath is a raven-haired elf who answers only to Mooncaller. Though gracious and charismatic as a leader, she is prone to periods of wistfulness and solitude. That being said, she is a fearsome force indeed on the battlefield, literally darkening the skies with her approach, her curveblade rending foes as she flies past.

 The city of Dusk rides the line between the Plane of Shadow and the Plane of Light, with the upper city a gleaming, beautiful place, while the undercity holds is own, more humble courts in dim gloom. Many who live in the latter have some trace of shadow influence in their blood, and those who feel the call to rage make a living as enforcers or guards.

There had always been Sangheili that had disagreed with humanity’s existence for one reason or another. Even as the two species worked together to overthrow the Prophets and stop the firing of the Halo array, there had been those among the Sangheili who still viewed humans as the enemy, pushing it aside temporarily for a common goal. And after the Arbiter had called for peace between both species? That had gone down with a great number of clans about as well as one might think.

So when California, ambassador between humans and Sangheili, had been named an honorary Sangheili and welcomed into the fold of House Vadam for her service, loyalty and protection to the Swords of Sanghelios and even the Arbiter himself, her back had essentially been painted with a target. Or, well, a bigger one at any rate; many had objected to her presence on the Sangheili homeworld from the very beginning.

Attacks on her had began to dwindle, though. Now that the Swords were successfully crushing or negotiating peace with any faction who dared to oppose ‘Vadam, the Sangheili were gradually accepting California and even humanity as a whole a little better. But you couldn’t change everyone’s view overnight, Sangheili or human.

And that was how California found herself attacked by Sangheili assassins while going to meet another Kaidon. She had managed to dispatch two of them, but the last was smaller and faster than his companions and quickly overwhelmed her, knocking her to the dusty desert ground. Before he could finish her, however, something roared and knocked him flying. It took California to recognise her saviour.

“Kesan!” She called his name, originally intending to ask what he was doing here. But then she noticed her assailant rising from the sand, a poisoned curveblade in hand, preparing to lunge at Kesan. “Behind you!”
