"oh, come on! nanamin is so into you, y/n," yuji grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
"yuji itadori, why on earth would you even suggest something like that?" you scoffed, your tone a mix of disbelief and irritation, but you have to admit your stomach flutters like a teenage girl at the suggestion.
"i don’t know, y/n! nanamin’s as stoic as they come, but when you’re around, i swear i can read him like an open book!" yuji teased. megumi sighs lightly.
"that’s completely untrue! and unprofessional," you shot back, your voice firm even as you fought to keep heat from rising to your cheeks. "you really shouldn’t be speculating or talking about your elders like that. it’s disrespectful no matter how well intentioned you are.” you turn away slightly, hoping the flush in your face wouldn’t give you away.
"you’re blushing sensei! i knew it— i knew it! you’re in love with nanamin, just like he’s in love with you!" yuji practically shouts, leaping ahead of the group. he spins around pointing dramatically at you while you sheepishly cover your face with one hand.
yuji clasps his hands together, holding them over his chest and his eyes gleam with exaggerated adoration. for a second, you almost expect heart shapes to pop out of his skull. "you two would be so cute together! i can already see the wedding! the flowers, the vows—and me, of course, as the ring bearer!" he gasps as if struck by inspiration. "but would nanamin even trust me with such an important duty? i’ll prove myself to you both, y/n! i swear i can handle it—"
"itadori, knock it off," megumi mutters, landing a sharp fist on yuji’s shoulder. yuji yelps, stumbling forward with a dramatic wince, his romantic musings abruptly cut short.
you let out a quiet sigh of relief, grateful for megumi’s intervention, though yuji’s bold declarations still echoed through your head.
“whatever” he shrugs the punch off. “you both know i’m right. if only kugisaki were here, she’d agree with me!” yuji rolls his eyes and continues to skip along the path.
you feel too embarrassed to look anywhere other than up at the ume trees that arched overhead, their branches a delicate lattice, filtering the gray light of the early spring morning. the air is cool and misty, brushing against your reddened cheeks like the softest whisper, carrying with it the faint scent of damp earth and blooming trees.
a sudden gust of wind stirs the branches and a flurry of blossoms descend like golden snow, scattering across the path before you. the petals twirl and dance in the breeze, their bright yellow striking against the damp cobblestones. you pause, watching them settle. you can’t help but think of the color of nanami’s hair in the sunlight—how it gleams just like this, radiant and warm, as if he holds the season's essence within it. everything reminds you of him these days.
was it that obvious? if the students could so easily pick up on your feelings for nanami kento, then what about nanami himself? could he tell that the way you looked at him, the way your voice softened when you spoke to him, was more than just friendly? you had long since accepted the painful truth: he was completely and entirely out of your league. he was a grade 1 sorcerer, and you weren’t even allowed to fight. sure you knew basic shikigami and could cast barriers, but you were by no means a jujutsu sorcerer. more so a glorified babysitter. and so, you resolved to keep your feelings locked away. a secret you would never dare reveal. there was no point in confessing, was there? you didn’t stand a chance with him… did you?
you walk slowly, soon falling behind the two boys. yuji’s voice becomes a faint murmur and his spirited delusions are muffled by the distance and rustling of the trees overhead. the air feels heavier now, each breath cool but slightly stifling. megumi glances back over his shoulder, his dark eyes catching yours for a fleeting moment. there’s something in his gaze—an almost pitiful understanding, as if he can see straight through the wall you’re trying to build around yourself. the look lingers just long enough to leave your chest tight before he turns away again, leaving you to the quiet that fills the space between you all.
