Cursed Bread - Sophie Mackintosh
Summary: Still recovering from WWII, the small village of Pont-Saint-Esprit welcomes the arrival of the Ambassador and his wife Violet, a glamorous and out-of-place couple. No one is more intrigued by them than Elodie, the baker’s wife, who gets drawn into their dangerous orbit.
Quote: “I've been looked at in pity and in fear and I've learned that the only way to really be seen is through desire. To be looked at and found whole. Found alive.”
My rating: 3.75/5.0 Goodreads: 3.31/5.0
Review: These types of psycho-sexual obsession books don’t always do it for me, but this one is beautifully written and captures the real undercurrent of unhappiness and desperation that leads someone to become obsessed with someone else. Elodie’s total focus on the intriguing new couple as a way of escaping her own unsatisfying life is convincing and the slow descent into violence is as subtle as water slowly coming to boil. The source of that violence is less convincing, however, and the suggestion that the Ambassador as an unreal figure doesn’t work, particularly in contrast with the realism, dreamy though it may be, of the rest of the book.
Note: If you come to this book looking for a focus on the Pont-Saint-Esprit poisoning, you should know that while it’s an obvious part of the story, this is really more of a story about Elodie.

What did you think of cursed bread? Currently reading it and liking it but it hasn’t captured me yet
i quite liked it!! i think it's one of those books that slowly grows on you with time, but it's definitely not going to be everyone's thing. i interpreted it more as a character study, and that really helped me connect to it a bit more?
also, it gets quite unhinged by the end, i'm still not sure what happened lmao, but the vibes were great
#i'd love to know your thoughts when you're done!!#cursed bread#sophie macintosh#booklr#literature aesthetics#asks#my asks#ask response
