@dreamsofalife from X
“Easy, easy…” Her hand hovered over the closing wound, and Shy’s expression changed, almost like night and day; now that she knew it worked, she was more focused on keeping him calm and safe, something she was far more adept at than healing. “I’ve got you…you’re okay, Gid.” A soft smile traced her face, eyes downward. “Thank you. How do you feel now? I’m so sorry, I should have seen that…what even attacked you? Because I really do think someone’s sending these after us; it can’t be a coincidence that your friends are missing and there are all of these dangerous creatures in the way of finding them.”
The way she called him "Gid"... It brought up the memory of his father and Kremy. It was a name that he felt safe with; one that invoked a soft warmth in his already blazing body. Gods he just hope Kremy and the others would be okay...
He moved aside and motioned to the hobgoblin that lay dead on the ground. Its skin bruised and singed from an incredibly crushing blow. "Fuckin' awful ass things... If it's these that're after me, than so is the rest of that terrible gang of murdering kidnapping thieves..."
Just the mention of it made his blood boil, his body brightening as licks of flame arose in random places of his exposed skin.

“Ah, shit-” he said, giving a soft hiss. It wasn’t as bad as he thought, but it definitely stung like hell. When he turned there was a slash that went up at a diagonal just to the right and above his naval. It was hard to see the blood against his skin, but the stain on his shirt made it more obvious that he’d been wounded.
“It ain’t that deep,” Gideon said, giving it another glance, before looking at the worried look on her face. “Man if Gricko were here he could patch me right up. I don’t suppose you know any healin’ magics Miss Shy?”
Shy hissed at the injury, trying not to look too stricken by the sight; there was no need to upset Gideon further and make it worse. Quietly she cursed herself for not taking more classes in healing, and for only going for the bare minimum needed to graduate.
“Shit…I haven’t used Healing Word in almost a decade, but I’ll give it a go.” She placed a trembling hand above the wound, speaking gently but as firmly as she could manage. “Heal…come on, heal, you can do it! I believe in you!”
A decade? Well that was certainly a fair bit of time since using a spell. He had some inherent magic himself, being part ifritee, but he couldn’t imagine not using it for so long. Though he supposed it might be different with actual casters, especially someone who doesn’t regularly see combat.
Gideon flinched a little as he felt the wound start to close up. Honestly he wasn’t sure if she was talking to him, the wound, or herself.
“Don’t worry, I believe in you too,” he said, speaking without really thinking. Sure, he did believe that she could. But she also seemed like she needed the pep talk.
"Dangerous, not dangerous, same thing." (( From Gideon because he absolutely would))
"You realize that those are two fundamentally different things, right? Anything can be dangerous in the right context, but if something isn't dangerous, it must mean that it's not currently dangerous."
"...bloody hell, I'm getting lost in semantics."

Gideon frowned. “Naw, I don’t have a number or anything to contact them with, whatever that’s for. Do you have like a stone of sending or know the sending spell? Might be able to contact Kremy that way.”
One large hand scratched the back of his head, the heavy chain hanging from the manacle on his arm rattling lightly. “Well this sucks. Whatcher name by the way? I’m Gideon.”

((Smol headcanon for Gideon because I was thinking about what would equate to a sickness that has a fever since fire genasi or other fire creatures wouldn't be affected negatively by a rise in temperature. Though it did occur to me that it would probably be the opposite for him. So technically when he gets sick his body temperature will drop and his skin will become a dull dark red like a coal cooling off.))

That got Gideon to pause for a moment. He hadn't been sure what to look for but now he had an inkling. "Frost or Kremy would probably use some kind of magic. I mean Frosty can use all kinds of mind magic so he may have slipped something on him. Or maybe one of Kremy's little shadow servant things might be on this guy."
He poked around a little more and found a card. It was one of the Three Dragon Ante cards that Kremy kept tucked into his hat. The genasi had to stop himself from accidentally crushing the card in the sudden distress he felt. These nasty fuckers really had taken his friends.
"This is Kremy's..." Gideon said, a slight shake to his voice. "Can you use this to track him? Or maybe if you know that locate object spell that Gricko knows. Maybe we can track the other card from his hat?"
Shy wasn't normally one for bloody revenge; she was too timid, too cowardly to take that route on her own. But when one is faced with the kind of Hell that Gideon had been thrust into, there wasn't really any other way to feel safe again. If these creatures had been responsible for such evil, then it was her moral obligation to help him get his revenge on them. That was the only fair way.
"You don't have to make anything up to me. You lost everything, this is the literal least I can do." Checking her impulse control at the door, she gave the body a curious poke to see if it was still breathing; no dice, it was thankfully deceased. "Do you think they would leave you clues if they could? I'm not good at magic or anything, but you have a lot of members of your party, would they be able to leave some kind of magic footprint to trace?"

"Well Torbek is really good at escaping things. He's like a literal shadow sometimes and was able to get out of the cell and pick the lock to let us out. We followed the horde after hearing of a fire demon attacking just outside their camp. We figured that meant Gideon, but as you can see we did have to fight our way out," Frost explained as the fighting died down, yellow cat's eyes scanning the area for nearby threats as he spoke.
Gideon had managed to get himself sitting up, looking up at Frost. "Shit, I figured I'd have to burn the whole place down to get you guys back."
"That was probably just your burning rage and hatred for hobgoblins talking," Frost quipped back.
"Yeah, proba-oof!" Gideon was cut off as he was suddenly tackled in a hug. Kremy was holding tight to him as the shadows lifted away from him and the neon faded away to show a regular alligator lizardfolk in a torn and bloodied purple 3-piece suit.
"You fucking idiot, Gid. You had me worried sick," he said, a scaly clawed hand running through Gideon's hair. On his ring finger was an elaborate wooden wedding band.
"I was worried about you too, Kremy. You guys were the ones that got captured."
"Yeah but to be fair, every time you get into a fight alone you almost die," said Gricko, back in his goblin form as he walked up to the group, Hootsie giving a soft hoot of concern.
"So who's your new friend Gideon?" Torbek asked. No one even seemed to notice when he rejoined the group, but it made a couple of them jump.
"You really need to make a little more noise when you move..." Kremy said with a sigh.
"Oh! Sorry Mr. Kremy. Torbek will try to keep it in mind," the bugbear said with a grin.
dreamsofalife:
Shy could only stand by and try to fend off as many of the hobgoblins as she could, in her admittedly limited capability. As he fell to his knees, she cried out; in terror, in sadness, in a mixture of fear and worry that couldn’t be put into words. But then…well, then the cavalry showed up.
She could only mouth a few words of confusion and awe as Gideon’s family swooped in and began taking down swathes of hobgoblins. Even as she stayed in place glued to Gideon’s side in case the worst happened, her gaze was locked on Hootsie, and Gricko, and Frost and the rest as they attacked, determined to rescue their lost loved one. In spite of the destruction, it was actually a pretty sweet gesture.
Gideon smiled, his breathing ragged as he watched the others join in the fight. They looked like they had a rough go of it themselves, battle damaged clothes and wounds from their own skirmishes. Though his attention quickly turned away as he heard a noise behind him and Shy. As he moved he was suddenly knocked on his back, a hobgoblin straddling him as it tried to plunge a blade down into his chest. Gideon grabbed the other by its wrists, clearly struggling.
“GET THE FUCK OFF MY HUSBAND!” a loud voice boomed. Another shadowy eldritch blast ripped through the air and collided with the hobgoblin. It went sprawling backwards with a scream. Silver eyes were glaring as the neon skull faced alligator took a few heavy breaths.
As another one tried to jump at Shy, the air suddenly shifted as the tabaxi appeared. Frost grabbed her and yanked her out of the way, as seemingly out of nowhere, the bugbear appeared, his long nasty claws spearing the hobgoblin.
“Don’t worry new friend! Torbek will help!” he said before looking at his fire genasi friend. The fighter gave him a thumbs up as he tried to catch his breath. “Gideon’s okay Mr. Kremy! Also! Hi, Gideon!” Torbek said excitedly before launching himself at another hobgoblin.
“Are you alright miss?” Frost asked. It was the same voice that spoke in her head, but now it was being spoken out loud.
By now the hobgoblins were starting to realize they were out matched and began to flee.

It didn't take long for Gideon to start slowing down again. This time it was simply exhaustion from the fight and he'd already used his second wind to ease some of the blows. Once more he has to take a knee from the exertion, the whistle dying out completely, his fiery aura extinguished.
Then, as if on cue, a goblin riding on an owlbear came charging out of the trees. "Git 'em, Hootsie!" the druid howled as he launched himself off her back, his body shifting into a two headed hound monstrosity and joining her in tearing the hobgoblins apart. Quickly following behind were a large tiger tabaxi hurling orbs of energy and one very angry lizardfolk covered in shadows with neon markings of his skeleton all over his body firing Eldritch blasts from the skull atop his cane. And lastly was a disproportionately tall and lanky bugbear with large jars of a strange magenta liquid fixed to his back. Long horrifying claws raked through enemies like they were nothing.

Gideon could feel the warmth wash over him as she cast her spell. His hand came up and yanked the bolt out of his chest, the wound closing over quickly. With a few ragged breaths he got to his feet. The fire in him hadn’t died out just yet. His heat gauge had fallen back to first gear, but he was still in this fight.
As he went back into the fray, he noticed something. The hobgoblins were looking behind them, shouting about an attack from behind. A dark shadowy blast knocked down on, two bright balls of energy knocked out two more, and a large spectral frogemoth came crashing through the trees and lashing at more with its tongue.
There was a relief in Gideon’s expression. His rage turned to hope and confidence as he grinned and gave a low chuckle. “I shoulda had more faith in ‘em.”
“Holy shit.” Shy stared agape at the giant frog-beast that shot through the horde. It was…well, not an expected sight to be sure, but she was impressed. A low whistle of appreciation escaped her mouth in spite of her not doing so consciously. “Whoa. Your friends came in clutch!”
With a manic grin, she aimed her crossbow once again. Even if she wasn’t able to keep the hobgoblins at bay with it, she hoped to keep them away from Gideon until the froghemoth made its way towards them. With no spell slots left, all she could really do was provide cover for him for now, and hopefully keep the little buggers away as much as possible.
Gideon cracked his neck and smiled a devilish smile. If his friends were alive, well, and fighting, then they would be just fine. They’d all make it though the fight.
One of the hobgoblins rushed at them with a spear. Gideon’s large hand grabbed it by its ugly face and hoisted it up before slamming it down into the ground with a sickening crack. The train whistle sounded again as he began punching and burning his way through more enemies.
“Please don’t be alarmed miss. My name is Morning Frost,” came a voice from inside Shy’s head. “We’re trying to make our way to you and our friend. Just hold on a bit longer. He’ll keep you safe until we can return the favor.”

Shuddering as she picked through the corpses, Shy found a crossbow and a staff; not exactly her first picks, but considering she was a sitting duck otherwise, she figured they were her best bet. Grabbing the weapons, she rocketed off after him, shouting and hoping he could hear her beyond the carnage.
Shakily, she aimed the crossbow into the horde, wincing at it hit a random target. Normally she didn’t have the stomach for violence, but…well, this was an exceptional case. The horde was beginning to multiply, seemingly endless in number. Another firing of the arrow; another thump, and a muted cry.
“Gideon! Gid, wait! You can’t do this alone, you’ll burn out!”
He didn’t seem to be listening to her. The heat continued to roll off him in waves. Another punch here, another blast of fire there, another slash of chains elsewhere. It seemed after an impossible stretch of time, the horde was also beginning to slow, their numbers beginning to trickle. Gideon gave a simple glance back at Shy when he noticed her pitching in to help him.
There was a loud thunk as Gideon suddenly stumbled back. His head snapped back towards the fight. One of those things had got him good. The sound of the train whistle began to die down as he fell to one knee. The fire started to dim as well. He was injured pretty badly but he wasn’t out of the fight just yet.
From the back of the horde there was a panic starting and shouts about prisoners escaping.

"It's a pleasure, Miss Shy," he said. "Though your sad poetry is more than likely to summon Torbek than anyone else. He's a pretty sad sack kinda guy."
"If we're doin' this the old fashioned way I should probably give a little more detail. Lizardfolk, tabaxis, and goblins are pretty common. Kremy is an alligator with a purple suit and top hat. Oh, can't forget his mustache. Frost is a real big tiger with green robes. And Gricko has all these totems and weird druid shit on him. And Hootsie's just an owlbear."

“I’m glad you were able to get out. So, your friend can travel through shadows?” That reminded her of someone she’d known a long time ago, although his abilities weren’t naturally born. Still, it was a good thing he’d been able to pick the lock for them. “Are any of you hurt? I uh…I’m out of spell slots, but I’m a whiz with bandaids.”
Before she could say much else, her gaze went towards the spectacle of the green alligator and the flaming genasi embracing each other. Even if she wanted to allow the two their privacy, it was a bit difficult with all of them together like this. Still, the scene was adorable, and she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief; Gideon had gotten his family back. Kremy got his husband back, and for now they all seemed intact.
“Oh!” Shy let out a squeak and jumped slightly at the sudden noise of Torbek returning, seemingly from oblivion. Ah, there was the mortifying ordeal of being known that so frightened her. Letting out a nervous chuckle, she rocked slightly in place. “I’m Shy…or, that’s what I go by. I met Gideon a little while and he said he was looking for his family, so I tagged along to help. I’m glad you guys are alright.”
“I think I can still make some bananyas,” Gricko said, channeling his druidic magic to produce several banana shaped good berries. “Here, everyone should take a couple bananyas.”
“Don’t mind if Torbek does!” the bugbear said, taking one and eating it, peel and all. He’d eaten worse things.
“Thank you, Gricko,” Frost said. “We’re glad that you stuck by Gideon for us. Without you he’d probably be dead. He tends to get in over his head.”
“Oh, hey! That rhymed Frosty~!” the goblin chimed in.
“Yes, I suppose it did,” he said flatly with a tone of amusement.
Gideon and Kremy didn’t seem to be paying any mind to the others for a moment. The genasi’s face was buried in the other’s shoulder, large arms wrapped tightly around him. There was a slight shake to his form as Kremy continued to run claws through his hair.
“Don’t worry, Gid. It’s alright,” Kremy said softly. “We’re safe... It’s okay.”
“I just... I didn’t want what happened to Pa to-”
“It’s okay, Gid. I’ve got you. I’m right here. We’re all right here. We ain’t goin’ anywhere, ya hear?”
