My one day off this week and I'm getting to work on some commissions I've been picking away at. Do you feel like no one understands you? Do you want to meet someone who shares the same interests? Someone who wants to build upon these interests to make something beautiful? Or perhaps you want a ‘Second Life’, so to speak? Well here’s how you can do just that folks!

Virtual communities have flourished in recent years much to the credit of hybrid-economies and the social, educational and interest-based qualities that are fundamental foundations of such communities.

When I use ‘community’ in a sentence, it’s often to say something like,

“My hometown is a tight-knit community.”

Referring to a specific tangible location, inhabited by people with varying interests yet common cultural and social expectations. Personally, I am guilty of asking for a cup of sugar from a neighbour, lending a hand after a storm to the family a street over and bonding over our love for film with the girl across the road; this is my community. However, without recognising it, the way we apply ‘community’ has changed, evolved with technologies and our techno-social world. Now, a whole selection of communities exist virtually and no longer is community defined by geographical location and the cultural and social expectations associated with it. Instead, people navigate and have agency in the spread of this information (Green and Jenkins 2013, 111) and connect with communities of people who either have a common interest (community spaces), want to build something together (collaborative spaces) or live vicariously in a virtual world that mirrors the physical (virtual community). 

For example,

Do you have an intense love *cough* obsession *cough for your dog? Then ‘Dogster’ is for you! This community space offers “forums, classified, diaries, treats, private messaging, photo tagging, themed strolls, pet-friendly travel and pet-personality matrix” to quench your interest (Lessig 2008, 187).

Or maybe,

Do you want a space to build something together? Somewhere you can focus on your work and add missing piece of material then already available? Then ‘Wikipedia’ is for you! Here you can use your knowledge to contribute to a collaborative space, helping build an encyclopaedia, made by the people, for the people.

Or maybe perhaps,

You love the world you live in, but think it needs more dragons? ‘Second Life’, here you come! This website best represents the version of a community most of us are used to in reality, almost mirroring the communities we live in, yet with fanciful creatures and less limitations.

  These communities are made possible by hybrid-economies. The hybrid-economy builds upon the cores of sharing and commercial economies “to leverage value from a sharing economy, or it is a sharing economy that builds a commercial entity to better support its sharing aims” (Lessig 2008, 177). Either way, a community space, collaboration space or virtual community is produced, and people are connected. So…

Do you need a cup of sugar? Well in a special deal for your community involvement, you get not only sugar, but the flour, butter, eggs and mixing bowl as well!
