THE FINAL FAREWELL...

November 29th, 1968; the largest liner in the world is seen leaving Southampton for the last time on a dull, aptly overcast day.

Cunard's legendary Queen Elizabeth had been sailing on a rising tide of red accountant's ink for a few years by this time. The liner- a genuine, bona fide war heroine and a post war travel legend- was by now literally bleeding her owners dry.

She had to go.

Before she did so, the Queen Mother asked to be allowed to visit the ship she had launched some thirty years earlier for one last time. Cunard cobbled together a gang of workers to wash down the grimy paintwork on the port side, in the line of the Queen Mother's vision.

After that interlude, the flag bedecked behemoth shrugged off her shackles one last time. Her siren bellowed mournfully as she stood out into the raw winter gloom, never to return...
