5 Ways to Make Your Bridesmaids Feel Special on Your Wedding Journey
On average, it costs a bridesmaid around £408 to have the privilege to stand by their dearest friend as they tie the knot. In fact, from organising a memorable hen to booking accommodation and buying the right accessories for their dress, the expenses can slowly creep up. But even if the role comes with pressing responsibilities, the reality is that bridesmaids are more than delighted to support you during the preparations and celebrations. As the bride, it’s only right to thank your bride tribe for all their dedication, as they are likely to have been through all your highs and lows. So what can you do to show how important they are to you? Lake District Country Hotels, owners of luxurious wedding venues in Cumbria and the Lake District, share some tips on making your bridesmaids feel confident and special throughout your wedding journey. ‘Propose’ in a unique way As you plan your big day, one of the first steps is to ask your closest loved ones to be your bridesmaids. Most people will feel flattered to hear the news that you’d like them to accompany you on this beautiful journey. In this respect, Paul Muresan, hotel manager at Lake District Country Hotels, says there are ways to make this moment even more unforgettable. “Asking someone to be your bridesmaid is an unforgettable moment, bound to spark tears of joy and tingles of excitement. “To make everything even more unique, you may want to ‘propose’ to them in a personalised fashion. For example, you could present them with a proposal box matching the wedding’s theme and their personality. “If you’ve known one of your bridesmaids since you were only a kid, think about including some pics together from your childhood. Or if you share a favourite musical band, you could add a CD with their best hits. “Don’t forget to include a heartfelt note, too! Just jot down a short but sweet message that explains why you’d love for them to be your bridesmaid when you marry your better half.” Introduce them to one another There are many different people you may want as your bridesmaids, from your sister and cousin to your university friend and work colleague. So, this means that there is a chance your gang may have never met each other. To avoid awkward silences during the rehearsal dinner, hen do, or the actual wedding ceremony, make sure to introduce them to one another beforehand. If all your maids are acquainted, they will feel more united and have time to form a stronger bond. Once you have picked your bridesmaids, consider organising a meal or a night out where they can get to know each other. With laughs, smiles, and wine flowing, it is easier to spur brand-new friendships! If they are scattered across the country, and distance is proving to be an annoying hurdle, make the most of social media. You could set up a WhatsApp group chat or arrange a joint video call – this is a quick, effective way to get everyone talking. Listen to their opinions Another way to make your bridesmaids feel special is to involve them in the wedding planning process. Your loved ones will want you to have the best experience possible, so ask for ideas and opinions as you perfect your event. You may even want to delegate specific tasks based on their areas of interest. Whether it’s suggestions for the menu, flower arrangements, or their bridesmaid dresses, they might be able to offer you some much-needed inspiration and come up with a winning idea that you never contemplated! Of course, you may not agree with all the opinions they are bringing to the table. But don’t make the mistake of dismissing their suggestions from the off if they are not what you had in mind. As well as potentially discarding a good idea, your bridesmaids might start to feel a tad underappreciated. And let’s be honest – you wouldn’t want to upset a loved one who is just trying to help. Plan some relaxation time Although organising a wedding is exciting, it is no hiding that it can be stressful and daunting at times. In fact, 71% of couples admit that wedding planning is more nerve-wracking than most major life events, such as moving house or starting a new job. It is crucial to take time out during the preparations to chill and unwind. So why not do just that with your bridesmaids? For example, you could book a magical spa day to keep the stress and worries at bay. On a tight budget? Don’t worry! You can opt for a relaxing night in with your gang and pop a bottle of bubbly with some reinvigorating face masks on. Not only will this help you all wind down, but it will also show your bride tribe that you care about them and appreciate all they are doing for you in the build-up to the big day. Celebrate the journey Before it’s time to make your way to the altar, reserve a few minutes to thank each bridesmaid individually. It will mean the world to them. If you’re running out of time, postpone this moment of gratitude to the end of the celebrations. Let them know how incredible they have been throughout the journey, and don’t be afraid to show your emotions. It is okay to shed a few tears or give them a big hug to recognise their invaluable support! You can hand them a personalised gift to make them feel extra special, too. Whether it’s a piece of jewellery or a meal at a restaurant they particularly like, treating them to a little something can go a long way and truly cement your affection for one another. When Ghosts Come For Us
Chapter 58
NOTE This is based on the movie Crimson Peak, so if any of the subject matter in that was uncomfortable for you, you will find this similar. I will *NOT* be describing incest in this, it will only be implied, same as the movie.
Also, I do not own any image or gif used in this story.
HERE is the link to Chapter 1 on Ao3
Rating - Mature
Charlotte was practically shaking with excitement as she watched the carriage making its way up the road to Foxgrove. She had been waiting for her brother excitedly for a few days, knowing that there would be no way for him to respond by post before their arrival. The room was readied for them and for the past day, Charlotte waited patiently. A rider was sent ahead from the closest town to alert them that Edward and Joanne were there and awaiting permission to come to Foxgrove. As soon as the carriage turned up the path, she ordered tea and food be readied.
When the carriage came to a halt, she had to force herself to remain where she was, knowing that rushing forward was completely against social construct. To her side, Thomas stood stoically, though the manner in which his hand was on her was almost as though to assist her to remember that she could not simply rush forward. They watched patiently as the coachman dismounted his position to the front of the carriage and walked around the side to open the door. It felt like an eternity to Charlotte before finally, the occupants of the carriage came into view.
As soon as Edward began to disembark, Blake gave an excited bark and seemed to plead with his master, who had the good sense to have him put on a lead so not to rush into the freshly prepared soil for the new plants, to say hello. When Joanne came into view, Charlotte’s smile became all the wider and she walked forward, forcing herself to remain formal. She stood in front of them, Edward giving a slight bow and Joanne giving a slight curtsey. Thomas walked forward and received similar.
“It is wonderful to see you both.” Charlotte forced her tone to be merely pleasant and calm when all she wanted was to embrace her brother and his wife.
“And us you. Thank you, Lady Sharpe, for your kind invitation.” Edward, knowing the gathered staff would be watching them carefully, acted as though it was not as personal a meeting as it truly was. “Sir Sharpe.” Thomas bowed his head slightly. “Dr Thompson, thank you for accepting our invitation. I hope the southern English coast was to your liking.” “It is colder at this time of year but not near as crowded, so we had a wonderful time.” Edward looked lovingly at his wife.
Charlotte looked at her brother and Joanne and to the quaint wedding bands they both donned on their hands. “We are most elated that you made time for us on your journey back north. Please, come in and get settled.” She encouraged the pair inside. “This is Mrs Matthews by the way.” The housekeeper stood forward on her name being mentioned. “She keeps this house in running order, her husband Mr Matthews is the butler and between them, I could not ask for a better pair to run Foxgrove. If you have any issue in your time here, do not hesitate to inform them, they are most able and facilitating.”
“I will have one of the servants bring the bags to your room.” Mrs Matthews offered. “Why don’t you get a warm cup of tea? I know Littleton’s tea leaves a lot to be desired.” “That sounds heavenly, Mrs Matthews, thank you.” Edward smiled. “I do not wish to speak ill of anyone but Joanne and I found their tea a tad…lacking.” “It is like pond water, there is no need to try and save feelings, it is horrid.” The housekeeper stated, causing everyone to give stifle their laughs. “I will have it brought out immediately.”
They all walked into the reception room where a fire burned, heating the room to a comfortable temperature whilst they sat down. “How was the coast?” Charlotte asked brightly.
“Wonderful, I...I never saw something so beautiful.” Joanne responded.
“I told Joanne that it is far more beautiful in the summer,” Edward added.
“Well, do not tell her, show her,” Charlotte smiled. “She deserves to see it.” Edward looked adoringly at his wife. “She most certainly does.”
The talk was very basic and light while they waited for their tea and such to arrive. After the last of the trays were left down, Thomas looked at the maid, “Thank you, Margaret, please inform Mr and Mrs Matthews that we do not wish to be disturbed.” “Of course, Sir Sharpe.” Margaret curtsied as she spoke and did as she was told, knowing that it was not unusual for Charlotte or Thomas to speak in private with the doctor and his now-wife. “If you require anything…” “Thank you, Margaret.” Charlotte smiled as she walked out of the room.
“I see Margaret is increasing her vocabulary,” Edward noted.
“She is liking it here,” Charlotte stated. “She is a very able young woman in every manner.” She looked at her brother. “Congratulations to you both, how are you finding married life?” “Wonderful, thank you,” Joanne answered.
Edward cleared his throat. “We’re sorry to have not waited for your return, however…” Charlotte waved her hand dismissively. “Please, to have to wait months for our return would have been madness. You were right to do as you do and I could not be happier for you both.” her smile was genuine. “I cannot believe you have achieved everything you have wished for in life, Dear Brother, I cannot express how happy that makes me for you.”
“I have some things I still wish to achieve, but overall, I can genuinely say, I could not be happier.”
“You are so capable, you will achieve anything you strive for.” Charlotte smiled.
Thomas smiled, seeing her same encouragement for her brother as she had for him. It was Charlotte’s way. She wanted to see those she loved happy and achieving.
“Where is Master Thomas, may I ask?” Joanne asked curiously.
“Thomas is usually asleep at this time. I have instructed for him to be brought to me when he is completed his afternoon ritual.”
Edward noted the displeased look on his sister’s face as well as the similar one on Thomas’. “You do not fit the role of a wealthy wife of a baronet.” “It means I am not supposed to tend to my son and I have to act as though I am incapable of basic emotions.” Edward chuckled. Charlotte always hated the propriety of upper-class society. He suspected that as long as she had enough to actually live, she would have been happier, and in his opinion, better suited to being the wife of a farmer over the wife of a wealthy businessman, or indeed, a baronet. “One would think you wish to return to Cumbria.”
“I do. There are too many people with too many ulterior motives here to enjoy the lesser cold.”
“You could always rent a house closer to Cumbria but not as north?” Joanne had heard of wealthy families doing such from time to time, even the nefarious Mr Brown did such when he entered an area.
“There are matters that must be attended to here, this winter. Even if the snows melt before it is dealt with, Thomas will have to return North alone. I cannot leave until it is all settled.”
Edward was somewhat startled by his sister’s words, but when Thomas nodded slightly in agreement, his expression both solemn and determined, he knew there was a deeper issue than his sister was willing to discuss at that present moment.
*
“Did you miss me?”
Thomas Jr beamed brightly at the woman talking to him, his arms bobbing up and down as he smiled and babbled at his aunt. She could never be acknowledged as such but as Charlotte explained to her brother, she very much wanted Joanne to be a part of Thomas Jr’s life. When he was older, she had informed them previously, she would tell her son of the familial link between him and the town doctor but only when he was old enough to understand that to say such a thing to any that was not a member of the family would have consequences for the doctor’s reputation.
“I think it is safe to say he recalls you somewhat.” Charlotte smiled.
“Or perhaps he simply is as pleasant and personable as his mother,” Joanne smiled. “Or is simply glad of a new face.” She looked around as she spoke, noting the stoic and expressionless face of the woman that was his nursery maid in the corner, giving her a withering look.
“I think that the situation for us all here,” Charlotte gave a warning glance at the employee who seemed to look at the far wall for a moment before stating she would check the nursey was being cleaned and left the room. “How is married life treating you?” “It is odd. For the first time in my life, I am not sharing a room with my sister but my husband. I….even saying such a title…” Though she sounded uneasy, there was no way for Joanne to hide the smile on her face. “It is wonderful.” “Good, I am so happy for you both. Thomas can tell you, I was like one that had taken leave of my senses as I rushed through the house to inform him of your impending marriage.” Joanne smiled as she thought of Charlotte’s insisting that her brother explain the odd relationship between himself and the wealthiest woman in the county, imaging her rushing through the large house they were now in to find her husband excitedly to tell him her brother’s news. “What news in Cumbria?”
“Very little. Mrs Phillips came to Edward’s a lot after your leaving, as you can imagine, you know how she and Mrs Davies are.” Charlotte nodded slightly. “Young Mr Grant, do you recall him?” “The undertaker’s son if I am not mistaken?” “You are not,” Joanne’s tone went cold. “I thought him a good man, I...He has besmirched my sister.” There was shame in Joanne’s face.
“Is she alright?” Charlotte asked worriedly.
“Perfectly so, she was all too happy for it. I knew she was smitten with him when he was interested in me but…” “You cannot control the actions of others.” “It made me so angry when I received mother’s letter. I get married, I do what is required before marriage and I am no sooner out of town with my husband and my sister acts in such a manner. It angers me so.” Charlotte nodded and simply listened to Joanne, suspecting she simply wished to vent. “Is she with child?” “Heaven’s alone only knows. I hope not, she is too silly for such a thing, she has not grown enough to tend to another’s needs, much less a husbands and a child's.” Charlotte nodded silently. “I’m sorry, the last thing you need is to listen to me discuss my wayward sister like some common…”
Charlotte patted Joanne’s hand. “Whatever your concern in this world, Joanne, you can speak to me.” “I am sure there are a few things you do not think that regarding.” Charlotte frowned for a moment before she noted the slightly embarrassed but also sly look in Joanne’s eyes, causing her to laugh, which in turn caused Joanne to laugh. “I concede, there are indeed some aspects of your life that perhaps we cannot discuss your woes of,” Charlotte acknowledged. “But I am a pen and paper away at all times, Joanne, please never hesitate to write me should you find yourself fretting anything.”
“Thank you, all things considering, I feel I can indeed speak to you on different matters.” Joanne smiled. “Actually, considering the topic of conversation, where is my husband?”
“And indeed mine?” Charlotte pondered. She had thought Edward would join them soon, if not both men, instead, they were joined by neither. She very much doubted that Thomas and Edward were in each other’s company as she knew they disliked each other at best and merely tolerated one another for her sake.
* “What do you think?” Thomas asked, showing it to Edward.
Edward, for his part, observed the object in his hand studiously. “You put a lot of effort into this.”
Thomas scoffed. “How could I not? Will it work, do you think?”
“According to the gentleman I spoke to, there is a possibility. It will be a first but being honest, none thought a machine could singlehandedly excavate an underground mine yet you have engineered one to do so. All discoveries are the result of someone’s engineering a single situation that allows it to occur. What does Charlotte think?” “I have not told her yet.” “Edward looked at him suspiciously. “Whyever not?” “I did not wish to until I was sure I could even begin to engineer it.” “And now?” “Now I fear to tell her also, for fear it fails.”
“What was it the inventor Thomas Edison stated, ‘I have not failed. I've just found ways that won't work.’?”
“I have found ten thousand ways that don’t work,” Thomas corrected.
“If this fails, then it fails, but you are trying, she respects that. She never ceases to commend your ingenuity and mind.” Thomas looked at him curiously. “My greatest error was asking her in politeness what you were doing whilst you were here only to get more information on your plans to revolutionise your machines than on her and my nephew. I think it came to just shy of three pages about some turning….thing to do with mechanisation. I have no idea what she was referencing, I have no idea what it is and I have no idea ho she knows what in Heaven’s name it was but she was adamant it would revolutionise some part of a machine you have. Not even the full machine, no a part. I do not know if you realise just how much my sister loves and respects you and your work.”
Thomas could not contain his smile at the reference to his work by his wife and of her clear interest in his work and in him as a husband.

As a huge admirer of the music of Howard Goodall and having seen several previous productions I was very much looking forward to another opportunity to see this evocative musical adaptation of Melvyn Bragg’s 1969 powerful first novel in the trilogy of the Tallentire family. The Hired Man starts at the turn of the 19th century, painting the harsh and difficult times when men & women would travel around seeking ever diminishing work as agricultural labourers simply to earn barely enough to live. It charts the immense changes brought about by the demise of farm work as young men swapped a life of fresh air and open fields for the ‘Blackrock’ of coal mines under the sea. Many men rarely saw any day light at all during winter months and the work and conditions were filthy and very dangerous. World War One added further horrors upon the already struggling poor and we see how the union movement began seeking to protect and improve the lives of working men and women. Women held families together eking out meagre wages with little company from husbands. And so the scene is set for stress and strife for the Tallentire family.
We meet John Tallentire at Cockermouth hiring fair in Cumbria in 1898. He is desperate to find a home for his newly pregnant wife and himself and ‘takes a coin’ from Crossbridge farmer, Pennington. Tallentire is sensitively played by Ifan Gwilym-Jones, completely capturing a working man’s pride in his job which though admiral, has the negative consequence of making him old before his time. This newly-wed couple become middle-aged in attitude in just a few months. Into this scenario comes restless maverick Pennington’s son Jackson, played by Luke Kelly, who every woman in the village is enraptured by including John’s wife Emily. Determined as she is to resist his charms she is gradually worn down by the monotony of life and against her better judgement she eventually gives in.
Rebecca Gilliland plays Emily perfectly. First full of joy and excitement in building a new life with her husband, then full of embarrassment and regret for not being strong enough to resist the advances of Jackson, and in Act II and 15 years older, strong-willed enough to insist on working at the mill and fiercely protective of her family. Gilliland and Gwilym-Jones are well matched and vocally both rise to the vocal demands of Goodall’s beautiful score.
Gwilym-Jones is particularly vocally impressive in his first act realisation of betrayal in ‘What A Fool I’ve Been’. Gilliland was born to sing this score and her beautiful voice soars, haunting and compelling throughout, particularly in her act one song of realisation of cause and consequence ‘If I Could’. Their duets ‘Now For The First Time’ at the beginning of their married life and the very beautiful ‘No Choir Of Angels’ at the end, are truly affecting and poignant.
Other strong performances are from Jonathan Carlton, charismatic and vocally strong as John’s brother Seth Tallentire; Jack McNeill as John and Emily’s headstrong young teenage son Harry Tallentire who goes to war against his mother’s wishes; and Christopher Lyne who plays Pennington and several other older characters over the span of some 2 decades!. Matthew Chase, Laurel Dougall and Lori Mclare give notable and strong performances in the ensemble, standing out for all the right reasons.
One of the most wonderful things about Goodall’s musical writing is the sense of history and community he evokes. His music is earthy, rich and vibrant, drawn from traditional English folk music and tradition and feels deeply ‘connected ‘and strong both in melody and rhythm. From the outset, it creates an immediate sense of community and determination as we hear the opening song in the distance, which then builds until the community is at full throttle in front of us. Goodall’s’ score is at its most lush in the ensemble numbers where he encapsulates all shades of human emotion from determination and despair to rage and joy. Whether at the hiring fair, hunting or drinking in Act 1 or at the gutsy union meeting, in the trenches or down a mine trembling in fear, his music powerfully conveys the requisite emotion.
The ensemble singing is wonderful throughout so it is, therefore, a matter of regret that some solo and duet singing is unfortunately hampered by a lack of projection. Some singers are drowned by the fine small 3-piece ensemble playing at the side of the space under the stairs – Richard Bates as Musical Director and on piano, Sophia Goode on violin, and Dominic Veall on cello. There is also a lot of dialogue above underscore and it was honestly very difficult to hear much of what was said as well as some of what was sung. If there is no amplification I wonder whether the band could have been placed at the back of the stage rather than on the same level as the cast? Something to ponder on for the future as it seems to be a niggly issue for many of the wonderful productions here at the Union Theatre.
Brendan Matthew’s direction and Charlotte Tooth’s choreography of the horrors of the war in the trenches and also down in the coal mines in Act 2 were particularly moving and very sensitively and well done indeed. However, it is genuinely puzzling that absolutely no one wears shoes throughout the entire show, especially as it spans nearly two decades and covers farming, mining and war. It simply looks peculiar and was particularly strange when Seth returns on crutches from war with a prosthetic leg with a boot on, yet is still bare footed on his undamaged leg! It would be understandable to perhaps start with no shoes, but as they all work, earn money and become less poor, surely the first thing anyone would buy is footwear of some sort?! It was unnecessarily distracting.
It also has to be asked why everyone is wearing exactly the same clothes 15 years on! A change of blouse, shirt, skirt, waistcoats surely would have been possible? It’s also very confusing when characters who have supposedly died, appear in the next scene as a different character but still wearing the clothes of their dead character! It was noticeable that the oldest and most experienced cast member did make an effort to change his costume and look! Niggles about sound, feet and costumes aside it was overall a wonderful evening!
This is a vibrant and committed production of The Hired Man. A wonderful British musical by two great writers, directed with very much love and performed by a talented young cast. Definitely worth a visit to Sasha Regan’s wonderful Union Theatre!
Review by Catherine Françoise
Based on the novel by Melvyn Bragg, THE HIRED MAN centres around the lives of a simple country family facing the turn of the century and the darker times that lay before them. When love, misguided affairs and war come into play, this makes for a stunning and romantic score filled with unforgettable melodies from one of Britain’s most popular musical theatre composers Howard Goodall.
Following the success of last year’s Howard Goodall season, the Union Theatre are thrilled to be bringing this beautiful tale of love and loss to life.

Real Weddings: Lauren and Paul by Jessica O’Shaughnessy
Happy Friday one and all!
We have such a pretty wedding for you today, and all done beautifully on a £10,000 budget! This in itself is a miracle, but its so gorgeous as well.
I will hand over to Lauren and Paul, to tell us all about their big day, which was captured beautiful by Jessica O’Shaughnessy…
Lauren and Paul
What was your budget?
Our budget was £10,000.
How would you describe your wedding theme?
I would describe our wedding theme as vintage folk with just a hint of rock and roll.
What was your favourite part of your wedding?
Lauren: My favourite part of the wedding was asking our guest to sing ‘Wouldn’t it be nice’ by the Beach Boys as part of the service. As we were having a civil ceremony we decided to incorporate an element of a traditional church wedding (singing the hymns) in a non-religious way. We wanted our guest to feel actively engaged with the ceremony and we also wanted them to stay on their toes.
Paul: My favourite part of the wedding was the speeches. We took a non-traditional approach and encourage the best men and the bridesmaids to get involved. Rachael (Lauren’s sister) a long with the other bridesmaids (Hollie, Sophie and Freya) sang an edited rendition of ‘Crashed the wedding’ by Busted (one if Lauren’s favourite bands). They edited the words, printed scrolls for all of the guests and invited everyone to sing-a-long) it was absolutely hilarious.
They definitely set the tone for the speeches and all of the pressure was then on the ‘Adequate Men’. As I had 3 best men each of them took responsibility for telling different stories from different points in my life. The speeches included pictures (which all of the guests had a copy of) and a little toy pony called Jeff (who had been an integral part f the stag do). I must also mention Lauren’s Dad, Craig, who opened proceedings and did an amazing job of both embarrassing the bride with funny stories and expressing his pride about the lovely young woman she has become.
Tell us about your Wedding Dress
The hunt for the perfect wedding dress began early in 2015. My Mum, Sister and I decided on one Saturday morning that we would go into Chester and try some dresses on in some of the Bridal shops. I was the first one of my close friends to get married and so had no idea about protocol. As a result it some became apparent that just turning up and asking to try dresses on wasn’t the way things were done. One shop allowed me to try on a couple of dresses however I was advised that they only stocked sizes 8-10 and therefore none of the dresses were going to fit me properly. The whole experience was very unpleasant as I left feeling fat and uncomfortable. I already had a very clear picture in my mind of what sort of dress I wanted but this would prove very difficult to find. In wasn’t until the summer of 2015 that we tried again. I had discovered a discount Bridal store in Newcastle upon Tyne (which is where Paul and I live). My Mum, Sister and Nan came to stay for the weekend and we visited the store. The staff were amazing, they had hundreds of dresses in different styles and sizes. This experience I really enjoyed. On that day I tried on 4 dresses, I knew instantly that I had found ‘the one’. We bought it then and there. In the months that followed I tried on 3 other wedding dresses as I wanted to be sure that I had made the right decision. I had. No other dress even compared.
Who did you pick as your bridesmaids &/or best man and why?
Lauren: My family are really close and I am lucky enough to have cousins who are like sisters to me. I choose my sister Rachael and my cousins Hollie, Sophie and Freya to be my bridesmaids. I also choose my younger cousin Isobel to be our flower girl. They looked beautiful and did an amazing job of keeping me calm and getting me drunk before the ceremony.
Paul: I decided not to have one best man and instead had ‘The three adequate men’. Matt, my brother and Will and Blandy two of my best friends were in charge of best men duties and they did an outstanding job-from planning and facilitating my two stag do’s to delivering their speeches. I couldn’t have asked for more.
Why did you choose your venue?
We wanted the wedding to be as informal as possible. We talked about the fact that we wanted the wedding to reflect the freedom that we felt at festivals or when we went away camping with our friends. Listening to music we loved, drinking and talking into the early hours. We didn’t want to be constrained by formalities. We also wanted the venue to be stunning and unforgettable.
Tower Hill Barns ticked all of these boxes. We booked our wedding when the refurbishment was still happening but we knew from the plans that it was exactly what we wanted. The setting, the buildings, the gardens and the staff were amazing. It really was the dream wedding.
Tell us about your photographer
I found Jessica by chance. I had been searching for photographers over Christmas and happened to come across her website. I had a very specific image in my head of what our wedding photographs should look like. I hated the idea of forced pictures with fake smiles and formal compositions. When I saw Jessica’s work I knew she was the one. Her images are so informal, they capture moments of reality. You can see from the images that when people are smiling it’s because they are happy and having a good time. She was outstanding. She added so much to our day and she has created images that truly depict our personalities and exemplify the emotions of the day. She was so professional but also a friend. When I was unsure about what was happening or where people should be, she took that pressure away from me, reassuring us that everything was as it should be. I can’t thank Jessica enough for the role she played that day or for the amazing moments she captured.
How did the proposal happen?
Originally Paul is from Cumbria and as a result we have spent a lot of time in the Lake District. We had planned to go back for the weekend with some of our friends for a get together. On the journey over I had asked to use Paul’s phone as my battery had died and he was very sketchy about handing it to me, this started alarm bells ringing and I honestly thought the worst ‘there is someone else’.
When we arrived at Paul’s Mum and Dad’s house all was calm. We spent the evening with our friends and usually this would result in a very late night and a horrible hangover the next morning. As 1am approached Paul suggested that we should get some sleep, this was very out of character. The next morning we woke up and got ready to go for a walk with our friends. They had gone home to get ready and this seemed to be taking them a very long time. They finally returned at about 12.30pm and we set off to Lake Ullswater for a walk.
We pottered around the Lake, threw some stones and dipped our feet into the water. As I was walking back the shore I turned to see my friends had formed a horse shoe around Paul who had got down on one knee. He pulled the ring from his pocket and asked ‘will you marry me?’. He may have also said something else before the words came out but I honestly can’t remember, it is all a blur. I covered my face and started to cry and asked ‘are you joking’? He laughed and replied no. I of course said yes. We popped a bottle of champagne and enjoyed ghe moment with our best friends. I began trying to call my Mum and my Sister. There was no answer. Paul pacified me and said we would go home, get changed and head into town for some celebration drinks, he also reassured me that I could keep trying to ring them for as long as it took.
As we pulled into the drive of Paul’s Mum and Dad’s all seemed calm as we had left it. Paul took my hand and walked me through the house out into the garden, I could smell smoke. As we turned the corner music began to play, I look down the garden and there was my entire family, who had driven up from the Chester in the morning, all of our friends, a BBQ and a gazebo set up in the garden. Paul had organised a surprise engagement party. I cried as my Dad hugged me. Paul hadn’t wanted me to use his phone as he had been texting my Mum and Sister organising the party. The engagement party set the tone for the wedding. We knew that we wanted the wedding day to reflect the laid back and fun atmosphere he had created on that day. People still ask Paul ‘what would you have done if she had said no’ and his answer is always ‘I knew she would say yes’.
Any DIY stories/tutorials you’d like to share?
Buy a decent printer and make your own invitations-this saved us a fortune. Everything was done on publisher and all you have to do is download different font styles and images from the internet. I was really proud of our invitations. We did the same with our seating plan, I mocked it up on publisher and then we sent it to be printed on canvass. I really liked having creative control and again it was so simple to do.
My mum spent a year buying crystal vases from charity shops for our table decorations. we filled each of them with gypsophila. Each of the vases was slightly different and this added to there charm.
We bought all of the decorations ourselves and on the morning of the wedding my Mum conducted a team of happy helpers to decorate the venue. We couldn’t have done it without her. My favourite decoration was a guitar which my Mum re-designed. She painted and added the lyrics to one of our favourite songs-this was a surprise for Paul on the day. All of these little touches really make the difference and made the day ours.
What was your first dance & why?
We spent months deciding on our first dance. Both Paul and I are really into music, it has been a very significant part of our relationship. We selected songs that had meant something to us throughout our relationship and rated them out of 10. Then one evening we discovered a cover of ‘Don’t let me down’ originally by the Beatles, but beautifully remastered by one of our favourite artists Paolo Nutini. We knew this was the one. It felt significant that this was a new song in our relationship and would forever only be associated with our first dance. We kept it a secret until the day and it was absolutely perfect. As a homage to the other songs that we had wanted, we incorporated them into our vows, selecting specific parts and re-writing them into our own words.
In hindsight, was there anything you would have done differently?
The only thing we would have done differently is hiring a live band. This would have been more in-keeping with theme and would have added another element of fun. But this is a minor detail for us as the DJ was absolutely fantastic.
Do you have any advice for future couples?
Be really fussy about you DJ. I spent months searching for a DJ who would be willing to only play songs that we suggested. We asked our guests to choose 5 songs that they would like to hear and we also created our own wedding playlist. As I already mentioned music is a very big part of our relationship and we wanted the music played to reflect who we are as people and not be the standard wedding tunes. The DJ was amazing, they got just the right mix of soul, rock and roll and Indie tunes.
What’s the best piece of marriage advice you received?
It will be exactly the same as it was before. It is. Nothing changes, you wake up in the morning and bask in the idea that you have engaged in a traditional rite of passage that means that you are now part of a club in society with millions of other people. But how you feel about each other and who you are doesn’t change. That’s the most amazing thing about it, you have this incredible day which celebrates your love for each other and everyone who is important in your life, but then you just go back to your normal life, with a ring on your finger and memories that you will cherish for a life time.
What was your favourite thing about planning a wedding?
I adored planning the wedding. There are so many parts of the planning process that I loved: finding the venue, thinking of the theme and seeing it all come to life, creating the invitations, planning the table dressings with my Mum, coming up with the playlist, designing my cake with Jan which was absolutely beautiful. All of those things add to the excitement and contribute to the build up. At no point did I feel pressured or stressed because we had so much support from everyone around us. I love the fact that everyone played a part in making our wedding perfect, it was a team effort and that truly reflects our relationship with our families and friends.
