Took Me 30 Years....

There are moments where I feel completely alone in the world. It’s as if I am the only one who thinks the way I do. It makes it difficult not to feel ostracized by everyone around you. I was born from two people who I am nothing like. People will say I’m much like my father. I would argue though that’s it's all superficial. When you look different, think different, and act differently you start to change the way you act so you can blend in. Cuban families are unforgiving to those who are different. The things most people know me for have all been defense mechanisms. I wasn’t mentally strong enough to handle being different. So I faked it till I made it. The joke was on me though because I’m still the outsider.  I did quite the opposite of making it.  I spent so many years somewhat brainwashed as to how I was supposed to think and act. I don’t mean it in a hypocritical way either.   The brainwashing was in making me think that being anything different was wrong. I didn’t have to look exactly like them. I certainly didn’t have to act like them either. I didn’t have to have their same tastes. I could have been me. I wouldn’t have ended up any different other than maybe just happier for a few extra years.  I could have just been me. It took me 30 years to learn this…

After 15+ years of aging I get to finally push my grandma in the swing. Despite having severe dementia she can remember taking me to the park, pushing me in the kiddy swings, feeding the squirrels, and having picnics back in the day. Life is short.
