Monotech's 25 years of innovation in printing industry

Chennai-based printing solutions provider Monotech recently marked its 25th anniversary, celebrating a journey that began in 1999. From its humble beginnings, the company has grown into a leading supplier of a diverse range of equipment and solutions for the printing and packaging industry. Today, Monotech offers comprehensive solutions for pre-press, digital printing, digital enhancement, wide-format printing, engineering systems, labels and packaging, and printing software.

“Our journey started with a team of seven people. We faced many challenges but overcame them, and built a great team. Monotech has developed a product line that has facilitated the industry's digital transformation over the years,” says TP Jain, owner of Monotech.

Initially focused on the South Indian market, Monotech harbored ambitions of expanding across the country. The company began by importing refurbished imagesetters and scanners, supplying them to Indian customers. This strategic move helped Monotech establish a national presence. “This strategy paid off well, allowing us to supply value-for-money products from a variety of brands to customers across India,” Jain notes.

Key milestones in Monotech's Journey

A significant milestone was Monotech's venture into computer-to-plate (CtP) technology through a partnership with basysPrint. This collaboration proved to be highly successful. “In terms of new equipment, basysPrint was our big success. We sold a good number of units in India,” Jain says.

In 2007, Monotech partnered with Konica Minolta, a major turning point for the company in the production printing segment. After a successful run, in 2015, Konica Minolta Business Solutions India acquired Monotech's production printing business. “This was a major decision for us as it was a profitable business. We decided to unlock its value and move into manufacturing in a big way. Our Jetsci line of inkjet solutions has since become a global brand,” Jain explains.

In 2012-13, Monotech introduced Scodix to the Indian market, which became a significant success in the upper end of the print embellishment market. To cater to the entry-level market for embellishment, Monotech launched its own Pixelglow line. “Pixelglow has gained good traction despite initial challenges. We have managed a significant number of installations,” Jain says.

Monotech's second foray into the production printing market with Ricoh has also been fruitful. “This is our second inning in the production printing market, and we have had good success with this venture. Ricoh has a solid lineup of products. We see a lot of promise in this space,” Jain states.

Pioneering inkjet technology

Jain highlights the growing importance of inkjet technology in the printing industry, especially for book printing. “Monotech was an early entrant in this segment. Our Jetsci knowzzleJet inkjet web press for the book printing market has gained significant traction. At the industry level, a lot of book printers are keen to embrace this technology,” he says. Monotech’s in-house research and development department is dedicated to developing advanced inkjet products, including label embellishment, on-demand book printing in both monochrome and color, large format printers for signage applications, industrial printing applications, and their own enhancement engine.

“This year’s drupa showcased the dominance of inkjet technology, and it gives us immense satisfaction to see that Monotech was one of the early advocates of this technology,” Jain adds. “Our journey with inkjet has become almost mainstream, and we continue to innovate with our dedicated R&D units.”

Future prospects for the Indian print market

With India experiencing robust economic growth, Jain believes the Indian print market has a bright future. “If you ask me about the short term, I think FY2024-25 is going to be a great year. The first quarter was a little slow because of elections. Also, industry players wanted to wait for drupa to make any big decision. Now that the first quarter is over, I am of the view that the rest of the year will see strong growth,” he says.

this is class material i saw during my degree (book manufacturing) so i hope it's ok if i chime in with more technical details !

in offset, what will be printed on each sheet of paper is converted into a screen (a grid of the ink dots) by a CTP, computer-to-plate, and each aluminium plate will be carved out specifically for the space one colour of ink will occupy before being pressed into the paper

the dots need to be angled in different ways so the darker colours don't cancel out everything, as shown above. if you look at a large advertisement posters in the street, you'll see them quite clearly because they are scaled according to the size of the paper and the average viewing distance

there's two types of screens:

frequency modulation, where the dots are all the same size but are placed closer or further apart to create smoother gradients between colours, most often used when printing clothing or faces (things where you don't want harsh lines)

amplitude modulation, which is the most common, where the dots are on grids that are angled differently depending on the colour, and change in size to create the colour nuances

the fuzzy uncomfortable colouration is a moiré effect (moirage in french), and is mostly due to yellow being unaligned. since it's the lightest colour, it's easier for it to clash with the others, and why it's at 0° while black is at 45° (the easiest to set up - keeping in mind there's other alignments). yellow is also printed last (black > cyan > magenta > yellow) so it can meld into the other colours more easily and further tone down any disruption

additional details:

when doing offset printing, each sheet of paper (it's huge. usually between 450x640 mm and 1200x1600 mm) goes through 4 C M Y and L units. you can add more to print the other side with the same CMYK inks, or use them with other colours of ink called spot colours, that come pre-mixed (Pantone being the most well-known). there are guides to know what any mix of CMYK inks will likely turn into once printed, but none for when you use a spot colour because of the amount of possibilities, so they're usually used on their own or in flat tints. or at your own risks ^^

the number of line of points on each inch of the screen ("LPI", line per inch) will define the amount of detail each paper will be able to render. coated (smoother) paper will give more precise images than newspaper (very rough) because the ink will sit on top of the paper

there are other kinds of printing than sheet printing (like web-fed, where a massive roll of paper will be cut off into sheets later and then into each individual signature or paper) but they can rely on the same printing techniques, while digital printing will often use one single unit and drop ink / toner (powder ink) as the paper is fed through

Was experimenting with halftone effects after watching this video and it almost has spiderverse vibes honestly. I actually learned some neat things about why printers use CMYK instead of just CMY so I thought I'd share !!

So in our optimal little computer space, Cyan (0,255,255), Magenta (255,0,255) and Yellow (255,255,0) all multiplied together gives us a perfect black (0,0,0) Awesome! The issue is that ink colors irl arent exactly perfect like this, and color is a bit more complicated irl compared to how computers represent it, so they aren't the greatest at combining into black if they aren't those perfect CMY values:

(thats not even black, its a dark blue in the original image but dark colors just look so much richer)

An important step to make sure you arent doubling up on the black values though is to divide the image by it's own "value" (the max of all 3 color channels) that way the value is equal to 1 everywhere, and you're letting the black ink take care of the value on its own.

Now obviously the grids of dots cant be aligned perfectly with each other because you'd just get a bunch of black dots in unwanted areas, but if the grids are misaligned, then some dots become more prominent than others which tints the whole image. This was an issue because older printing methods didn't have great accuracy and these grids were often misaligned.

The solution was to rotate these grids such that they can move around freely while getting rid of that tint effect if they aren't perfectly aligned :D

(I have no idea how they came up with these angles but that might be something to look into in the future who knows)

SPEAKING OF MISALIGNMENT

I wanted to implement that in my own filter to get some cool effects, and I discovered another reason CMYK is better than CMY for lots of stuff !!

With CMY, you're relying on the combination of 3 color channels to make the color black. This means if you have thin lines or just details in general, misalignment can make those details very fuzzy. Since CMYK uses a single color of ink to handle value, it reduces color fringing and improves clarity a lot even if you have the exact same misalignment as CMY!

(yes these comparisons have the exact same color misalignment, the only difference is using a fourth ink color for black)

ANYWAY I just thought there was a lot of cool information in this tiny little day project, I also just think it looks really neat and wanted to share what I learned :3c

EDITING BECAUSE THERE'S ONE MORE THING I WANTED TO ADD

So, I talked about how to get K in addition to CMY instead of just CMY, but how exactly do you separate CMY from an image in the first place?

Well, CMY is a subtractive color space, meaning the "absence of color" is white, compared to RGB where it's black. This makes sense because ofc ink is printed on white paper. You can use dot product to get the "similarity" between two vectors, and this can be used to separate RGB actually! Using the dot product of a color and red (255,0,0) will give you just the red values of the image. This is cool though because if we plug in cyan and get the dot product of our image and the color cyan (0,255,255), we can get the cyan values from our image too! If we first divide our colors by their value to separate the value from them, then separate CMY using those dot product values, and using K for our final black color value, our individual color passes end up looking like this:

While it's called a "subtractive" color space, I find it more intuitive to treat white as the absence of color here, and then multiply all these passes together. It makes it much easier to understand how the colors are combined imo. Notice how cyan is the opposite of red: (255,0,0) vs (0,255,255) and magenta and yellow are the opposites of green and blue respectively! This means you can actually kinda get away with separating the RGB values and just inverting some stuff to optimize this, but this example is much more intuitive and readable so I won't go too deep into that. Noida's Shree Krishna Graphics acquires Cron CtP

Noida-based Shree Krishna Graphics, a pre-press bureau and a supplier of offset plates, recently acquired a CRON UVP-4664G+I+ commercial & newspaper CtCP system from Monotech Systems. It already had a thermal CtP system from Technova from the date of its establishment in August 2022.

Anupam Gupta, director of Shree Krishna Graphics, also runs two other companies — Krishna Sales, which deals in plates and consumables from prominent brands such as Technova, DIC, and Toya as well as Crystal Graphics, an offset plate provider in Ghaziabad.

“The surge in demand for plates was a catalyst for us to start Crystal Graphics with the Amsky thermal CtP system. Later on, it became difficult to fulfill the demand for plates from printers in Noida. This need was the catalyst for Shree Krishna Graphics.” Just like Shree Krishna Graphics, Crystal Graphics is also equipped with two systems for plate production.

Gupta said the installation of the CRON CtP was the result of positive feedback that was doing the rounds about the machine in the market from its customers. He praised the ease of maintenance, accuracy, and speed of the press as well as the technical support of Monotech Systems. The CRON UVP-4664G can produce 28 plates per hour (28*40 inch), supporting plate sizes up to 1160mm. Dot imaging, accurate dot reproduction with a minimum error rate, and a 64-channel capacity are some of its key features.

Loksatya, Jagat Kranti, and Hindustan Times along with several other newspapers, publishers, and packaging and commercial printers form the clientele base of Shree Krishna Graphics.

Expressing his thoughts on digital printing, he said its growth is not along expected lines in India right now. “drupa 2016 predicted digital printing to be a game-changer in the industry. It has been eight years but the expected rate of growth hasn't seen its peak.” Though he acknowledges that the value of additional printing is something that only can be done digitally, he says the quality of output and cost-effectiveness of printing in offset are unmatchable. “Every offset printer has a digital printing system but is not ready to give up offset completely.”

Gupta recalls his transition to entrepreneurship, leaving behind salaried jobs across different sectors. “A printing technologist by profession, I served as a production head at The Indian Express, later joining the Ministry of social justice as a gazetted officer. However, my industry-centric mindset led me to The Times of India (Sahibabad) and eventually as the north India head of CMS Info Systems (Mumbai). This journey paralleled the establishment of Krishna Sales in 2010 until 2013 when I devoted myself entirely to business.”

Nova Carteira de Identidade Nacional pode ser solicitada; veja como emitir o documento

Os atendimentos de cadastro e confecção da nova CIN serão feitos de forma presencial O Estado de Rondônia iniciou a emissão da nova Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), em dezembro de 2023. O documento unifica possíveis números de registro que existam em cada um dos 26 estados do país e o Distrito Federal (DF), de acordo com a Lei Federal n° 14.534 de 11 de janeiro de 2023, que estabeleceu o CPF, como número único da Carteira de Identidade Nacional. O uso do número do Cadastro de Pessoa Física (CPF), emitido pela Receita Federal, permite que o documento seja válido em todo o território nacional, enquanto o Registro Geral (RG) tem a emissão pelas Unidades da Federação (UF). Desta forma, o CPF passará a ser utilizado praticamente em todos os documentos, permitindo assim, que a partir de uma única combinação numérica, entidades governamentais consigam ter acesso a todas as informações de um cidadão, como Carteira Nacional de Habilitação (CNH), Título de Eleitor, Carteira de Trabalho e Previdência Social (CTPS), entre outros. EMISSÕES De acordo com dados do Instituto de Identificação Civil e Criminal da Polícia Civil (PC), até o momento, foram emitidas 11.200 Carteiras de Identificação Nacional em todo o Estado. Diariamente são disponibilizados 507 senhas para agendamento. O diretor do Instituto de Identificação Civil e Criminal, Alex Queiroz salientou que, a proposta da nova Carteira de Identidade Nacional “é aumentar a segurança da identificação dos cidadãos, melhorar os cadastros administrativos e diminuir fraudes no país”, evidenciou. Para solicitar a CIN, o Governo de Rondônia disponibiliza a plataforma “Portal do Cidadão”, para acesso e realização de agendamentos à emissão do documento. PORTAL DO CIDADÃO Pelo “Portal do Cidadão” é possível fazer agendamentos para emissão da nova CIN O Portal do Cidadão pode ser acessado pelo https://portaldocidadao.ro.gov.br/, para a realização de agendamentos online, que são feitos diariamente, com limite de senhas. Os atendimentos de cadastro e confecção da nova CIN, de forma presencial. A emissão da primeira via é gratuita, direito garantido pela Lei Federal n° 7.116, de 29 de agosto de 1983. Na segunda e demais vias são cobradas taxas, com valores e regras estabelecidos pela Unidade de Federação (UF). Documentos exigidos para a expedição da nova Carteira de Identidade Nacional DOCUMENTOS OBRIGATÓRIOS: - Qualquer documento original contendo CPF ou espelho da Receita Federal; - Certidão de Nascimento original; (expedida nos últimos cinco anos); - Certidão de Casamento original (expedida nos últimos cinco anos); - Não será aceito documento de União Estável; - Se divorciado, apresentar Certidão de Casamento atualizada com averbação de divórcio; - Brasileiro Naturalizado apresentar o Certificado de Naturalização; - Comprovante de residência original. DOCUMENTOS OPCIONAIS: - CNH (Carteira Nacional de Habilitação); - Cartão do SUS; - Título de Eleitor (em caso de maior de 16 anos); - CTPS (Carteira de Trabalho e Previdência Social); - Carteira Profissional; - Registro Militar; - PIS/Pasep; - Tipagem Sanguínea. OBSERVAÇÕES: CPF precisa estar regularizado junto à Receita Federal; Evitar o uso de camisa branca para não coincidir com o fundo branco; Durante o registro fotográfico, não usar óculos, acessório marcante ou maquiagem exagerada; Os dados constantes na Certidão apresentada devem ser coincidentes com os registros existentes na Receita Federal; Pessoas com Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA) – apresentar Laudo Médico, com CID; A troca do RG antigo pela nova Carteira de Identidade Nacional (CIN), bem como a emissão da primeira via desse documento, em formato físico (papel de segurança) e digital, será gratuita; A substituição da Registro Geral pela nova Carteira de Identidade Nacional em formato físico (papel de segurança) e digital, poderá ser feita de forma gradual e gratuita até 2032.
