100% accurate CSM predictions using my psychic powers
*straightens glasses* Okay, here's the play:
(Spoilers for up to ch 142 below the cut.)
So Fujimoto is really hammering home this idea of the impossible choice. As presented to Denji, it's:
Let Nayuta die, or let Asa die.
Never become Chainsaw Man again, or never have a normal life.
Go along with the batshit church, or go along with the weirdo Pubilc Safety gang.
Asa and Yoru get a similar choice presented to them by Fami, in the kill/save Chainsaw Man argument. Fami presents a solution by rejecting the premise: what Asa really wants is to save Denji, and what Yoru really wants is to kill Chainsaw, so there's no difficulty there, or so Fami claims.
We know better, obviously - Denji is both Chainsaw Man and Denji Hayakawa, and any denial of either part of his identity is a denial of the whole (again, interesting Asa/Yoru parallel there). But I think the method Fami is using here is interesting, because Denji comes up with it when push comes to shove with Yoshida:
She chooses two choices.
In 142, Denji is again presented with an impossible choice: keep his promise to Public Safety (and test Yoshida's threat to kill Nayuta), or let these innocent people die. (The placement of Fumiko and Barem on opposite sides of him, angel/devil style, is particularly unsubtle.) In the immediate future, maybe he'll pick one or the other, or maybe he'll again choose two choices - I don't care. At the climax of part 2, what's going to happen is:
Denji and/or Asa will be presented a truly impossible, horrific choice
They will fail to choose two choices, and either suffer or nearly suffer terrific loss, when:
The other will come in/they will come together, and Through The Power Of Love (remember, part 2 is a shoujo parody) they'll overcome the impossible choice together - they'll choose two choices. (Compare to Jojolion, and Hirohiko Araki's idea of "miracles".)
I will accept all accolades given if I'm right, and I will delete this post in great shame if I'm wrong.
