What is CPCS? CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) is a card scheme created to reflect and showcase the competence of plant operating personnel. Launched in the year 2003, CPCS is a standard to show how competent a plant worker is. CPCS was started due to requests put forward by several employers in the UK. It is controlled and run by the authority CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). The main objective of creating CPCS Is to standardize different practices for plant operatives throughout the country. The courses must all be taken at a registered training centre.
What is NPORS? NPORS is the alternative to the CPCS accreditation. The card lasts for 2 years (red card) or 5 years (blue card) from the day you successfully complete the assessments. The NPORS operator registration card is produced for an individual who has successfully completed practical and knowledge assessments on the categories shown on the back of the card. The courses can be on your own site. For the latter, your site must meet NPORS specification for the category (available upon request) and you must also have the correct items of plant and equipment on site.
NVQ To progress through the CPCS or NPORS scheme you must complete an NVQ to upgrade from red, a red trained operator to a blue competent operator’s card. You cannot simply re-take your test and get another red card, to keep your card you must complteet an NVQ on the category of plant you operate.
On Site Assessment NVQ - OSAT This is a work based qualification delivered through onsite workplace assessments from one of our team of experienced assessors. You will be observed operating your category of plant, enough time will be given to allow you to demonstrate the full workings of the machine and any attachments. Based on the information from the assessment and you professional discussion a portfolio of evidence will be compiled. Evidence will also be collected, Method statements, Task briefs, Witness testimony from supervisors, Timesheets, ect.
NPORS Variety This is where NPORS training really comes into its own. We offer the “normal” categories – Excavators, Dumpers, Rollers, Telehandlers etc but they also have a lot of other courses that other schemes do not. These include Slinging and Lifting with Excavator, Vehicle Banksman (Traffic Marshall), Quick Hitch (Safety or Awareness), Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT and Genny) and Abrasive Wheels. Training Elite Plant Training can offer full Novice Training Courses with NPORS assessments at the end for candidates with no previous experience. We ensure that no matter what, you have access to the construction training you need and we are certain to have the courses you are looking for. We also offer bespoke courses for semi experienced operators or those that may have used the machine in a different capacity E.g. A 360 Excavator operator who has only used the machine to load or other duties.
It is recommended that delegates have at least 2 years prior experience although, as with anything, experience and ability are subjective. Even if your knowledge base or experience is limited, our construction training courses are certain to teach you everything you need to know for the future. Successful candidates will be issued with an NPORS Red card, which is valid for 2 years. Our NPORS training is provided by professionals in the construction industry so they are assured to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to complete your course and receive your NPORS card. Unlike CPCS, you have the option of undertaking the practical and theory tests either at an accredited test centre or at another location of your choosing (assuming it meets the necessary criteria). Before undertaking any CSCS NPORS practical or theory test you will need to have passed a Health & Safety touch screen test within the two years prior. If you currently have a valid ‘traditional’ NPORS card there is the option of changing it to a CSCS card by passing a Health & Safety touch screen test and applying to change the card.
CPCS The CPCS test consists of a professional one-to-one theoretical exam, followed by a practical examination. The theory exam will be recorded by one of our testers and the CPCS practical test could also be video recorded, if required. These tests can be randomly monitored to ensure quality and standards remain to those expected. Both parts will assess competency in operating plant machinery. The majority of CPCS testing must be completed at one of our registered CPCS test centres, unless it is an off centre category (see training guidance for on/off centre categories), but we are also able to come to site for certain categories that are off centre.
Why have a CPCS card? Gradually, customers and employers are asking evidence of competence from all operatives on their construction sites. The CPCS card shows employers that the abilities and practical knowledge to do the job successfully are present. Indeed, countless sites will not let you operate machinery without the card. Kalzip is proud to announce that its training courses have been formally recognised as complying with Basic Competency Programme (BCP) standards for roof sheeting & cladding.
The company is now recognised as being a BCP approved manufacturer of this industry-wide initiative that is driven by the Roofing Industry Alliance (RIA) in conjunction with the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC).
The prime objective of the BCP is to support unqualified roofing operatives by raising their personal standards of knowledge, skills and competency in the workplace while at the same time providing them with a route to becoming more highly trained, better equipped and further educated by attaining National Vocation Qualifications (NVQ).
Endorsed by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), Construction Products Association (CPA) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the BCP scheme is formalising manufacturer training and linking it to NVQ attainment.

Once a roofing operative has attended a Kalzip 4-day General Operator Course and passed the BCP End Test, they’re awarded a certificate, and on successfully completing a CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Test, they automatically become eligible to apply for a ‘Red’ Experienced Worker CSCS Card, which is valid for a three year period. Operatives then have the opportunity of further upskilling themselves and climbing the qualification ladder by studying towards a Level 2 NVQ, which entitles them to apply for a ‘Blue’ Skilled Worker CSCS Card.
Courses scheduled in Kalzip’s ongoing training programme are generally held at the Haydock Training Centre, but they can also be arranged at other suitable venues if required. Kalzip awarded BCP training status

Kalzip are proud to announce that their training courses have been formally recognised as complying with Basic Competency Programme (BCP) standards for roof sheeting & cladding.
The company is now recognised as being a BCP approved manufacturer of this industry-wide initiative that is driven by the Roofing Industry Alliance (RIA) in conjunction with the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC).
The prime objective of the BCP is to support unqualified roofing operatives by raising their personal standards of knowledge, skills and competency in the workplace while at the same time providing them with a route to becoming more highly trained, better equipped and further educated by attaining National Vocation Qualifications (NVQ).
Endorsed by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), Construction Products Association (CPA) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the BCP scheme is formalising manufacturer training and linking it to NVQ attainment.
In addition to advancing the skills and abilities of the roofing operatives themselves, this nationwide development is also of benefit to Kalzip, its Teamkal contractors, architects and clients who can be reassured that the company’s highly durable and maintenance-free standing seam systems will always be installed to extremely high standards.

Once a roofing operative has attended a Kalzip 4-day General Operator Course and passed the BCP End Test, they’re awarded a certificate, and on successfully completing a CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Test, they automatically become eligible to apply for a ‘Red’ Experienced Worker CSCS Card, which is valid for a three year period. Operatives then have the opportunity of further upskilling themselves and climbing the qualification ladder by studying towards a Level 2 NVQ, which entitles them to apply for a ‘Blue’ Skilled Worker CSCS Card.
Courses scheduled in Kalzip’s ongoing training programme are generally held at the Haydock Training Centre, but they can also be arranged at other suitable venues if required.
