David Malin The Man Who Coloured the Stars

David Malin’s photographs have changed the way we think of outer space. His pre-digital process for photographing astronomical phenomena was the first to reveal the cosmos in its true colours. Later, he developed a way of isolating the faintest parts of an astronomical plate to reveal the most distant edges of the known universe. Here he discovered a spiral galaxy 650,000 light-years across – the largest yet identified – which now bears his name: Malin 1.

Throughout his long career, David Malin has worked with photography at the intersection of physics, chemistry, and aesthetics, creating images rich with scientific data while also enriching to the eye and to the imagination. He has achieved this by drawing on and integrating different strands of knowledge, ways of thinking. It is a process as creative as it is analytical, and it has taken him on a visual journey from the microscopic architecture of crystals to the unimaginable vastness of deep space.

ok to talk more about the geology building. it has those stone pillars on every level.

the pillars on the ground level are made of magmatic stone (aka the stuff that comes straight out of a vulcano (simplification))

the first floor pillars are made out of metamorph stone (which is what happens to stone underground. it gets all squished and partly melted. marble is metamorph thats why it has those pretty swirls)

and the second floor has sedimentary stone (yk when stone erodes and builds sediment and that sediment turns into stones again (can also be made out of fossils. like limestone)) (funfact the pyramids are made out of lots and lots of little microscopic fossils called Globigerina)

and this kind of dedication goes through the whole building. the floors, the stairs, the wall panels, etc etc. they also have a huge geological collection and a crystalography and a paleontology museum. very cool

like no one follows me but here's an intro post anyway.

this blog will be an archive of my thoughts and nothing else literally just stuff i occasionally or constantly think about

i probably know more about linguistics than the average person does. for some reason grammar sparks interest within me (why it must be something as outwardly dull as grammar, and not, say, geology or something of equal calibre i question every day)

i'm getting into crystalography, though, so maybe there's hope yet

i like physics, especially astronomy

i also think astrology is pretty interesting to learn about

i'm teaching myself latin for fun, which has been going well

my favourite hobby is writing because when i write i get to exist as something larger than myself, i am putting out a message into the world that anyone can read and hence giving out a part of myself as a gift, or an offering, like "here, this is a piece of my heart and i trust you to take good care of it" and it's the best feeling ever

i like the colour green. possibly because it was the favourite colour of one of the only people i have ever cared for very deeply, whom i no longer speak to

They kept stalking me to leave my winter stuff around for people they called a weirdo.....so I would deconstruct a sleeping bag to see the difference in canvas covering....say if the covering was name brand...as well as just cotton t shirt material........and i had most of it washed with a strong smelling detergent and found an inner fabric lining to replace the cancer causing stuffing that is really linty......so that is my contribution to asian labor rights......buy less reuse more....

Because the police came out to abuse people they would come back around to save image with an ambulance for the weirdo issues.......and they made a child's tipi out of sand wood....

Otherwise....the beach walk was still really busy with marathons.....and other activity......so I left some book recommendations...like the srimad bhavagatam with laudato si.......the letter by Pope Francis........and a copy of.....the Jacobin with the world of islam from new York.....

Global Cargo Missions Planned as Critical Research Proceeds

ISS - Expedition 56 Mission patch. August 23, 2018 A Russian cargo ship departed the International Space Station Wednesday night as another resupply mission from Japan is planned in September. The Expedition 56 crew members also observed protein crystals, studied an ancient navigation technique and researched time perception in space. Two Soyuz crew ships and a Progress resupply ship remain docked at the orbital lab after the Progress 69 (69P) cargo craft undocked from the Zvezda service module Wednesday at 10:16 p.m. EDT. It will orbit Earth until Aug. 29 for engineering tests monitored by Roscosmos mission controllers before deorbiting over the Pacific Ocean.

It is targeted for launch Sept. 10 to deliver science, supplies and batteries for installation during a pair of spacewalks next month. Russia’s next resupply mission, the Progress 71, is targeted for a two-day trip to the station at the end of October. Commander Drew Feustel continued working on a pair of similar protein crystal experiments today. The BioServe Protein Crystalography-1 and Protein Crystal Growth-13 studies allow astronauts to observe crystal growth in space and analyze the results. This saves researchers time without having to wait for samples to be returned to Earth for analysis.

Alexander Gerst of ESA assisted Serena Auñón-Chancellor from NASA and tested using a sextant in space for celestial navigation during an emergency. The duo worked inside the Cupola today and tested stability, positioning and sighting with the device using a star map. Gerst then switched his attention to a European Space Agency study exploring how astronauts perceive time in space. Researchers seek to quantify subjective changes in time perception to understand how astronauts navigate, move and hear in space.
