xayah / rakan owo

The leaves of the palm bristled against the wind, and the way it shook made it look like the tree was laughing at her plight.

Xayah huffed, digging her talons into the ground and circling around the rocks for what must have been the twentieth time. The face of the rock was too steep to climb, even for vastaya. The shadow of her wing extended across the ground below her, and she grimaced. Couldn’t she have been born a couple of hundred years or so back in the evolutionary line?

They’d spent the better part of two days tracking down the elusive crystalfruit. But Xayah didn’t expect the hardest part to come after the search. What kind of tree grew upon rocky cliffs, anyways? Whatever winged creature that carried the seeds there was doing the tree’s lineage a huge favor.

“Xayah!” she heard a voice call from around the corner. Perking up a little, she rushed over to meet up with Rakan. He’d seen how difficult the ascent was for her, and before she could stop him, he had rushed off, pledging to find a “solution.” Xayah had rolled her eyes. If that solution didn’t involve them somehow sprouting wings, she didn’t think they’d get anywhere.

When she caught sight of him, her eyes immediately went towards the cylindrical object in his hands. It was the size of a large steel drum, except its top had been removed and an elastic piece of cloth was pulled tight across it.

“Ta-da!” His eyes gleamed with a wild excitement. “I told you, I’d find something! And this... this contraption is incredible! I’ve never seen anything like it!”

Xayah had to resist rolling her eyes. “A trampoline?”

Rakan snapped his fingers, as if she had just made an earthshaking discovery. “Magnificent! Don’t worry, babe. That fruit is as good as ours now!”

She took another look at the portable trampoline, and then back at the cliff upon which the crystalfruit tree grew. “I know you mean well, Rakan, but I don’t think-”

“I saw one of those human performers use one before I borrowed it,” he cut in, placing it at the base of the cliff and walking back twenty paces.

“Borrowed?” Xayah crossed her arms.

“I said I’d give it back!”

She chuckled. “Alright, alright. If anyone can get some air with this thing, it’s you, mieli.”

Rakan struck a pose while stretching his legs in preparation, contorting his body in a way that Xayah couldn’t tell if it was supposed to be seductive or in agony.

His legs bent like a sprinter’s, tail feathers sticking out. And then Rakan sped forward, a stream of red whizzing by her. He jumped forward, his body spinning in the air as he somersaulted, and as he landed he bounced up onto the trampoline. Propelled by the elasticity, Rakan soared up the cliff. Xayah was impressed - she didn’t expect his stunt to work so well. But it seemed like even his best efforts weren’t enough to scale the cliff. He was starting to lose momentum, and the edge was still a few feet away.

Rakan reached a hand out and grabbed onto a handhold near the top, swaying by his dangling hand. A few pebbles cascaded down the cliff face as his feet collided with the stone.

“You okay, Rakan?” Xayah called up.

“Never better!”

Straining to pull himself up with the one hand, Rakan pushed off the cliff, using that momentum to rock his body back and forth before lunging up with his other hand. It found the handhold, and with a great effort he dragged himself up, reaching the edge and finally emerging onto the top of the cliff.

Xayah couldn’t believe her eyes. She caught herself staring with jaw hanging open, and shook her head. “That - that was amazing, dear!”

He strode up to the tree, reaching towards one of the low-hanging branches before pulling off one of the fruits. From her distance, she couldn’t see much past a gray speck, but it looked like ha had gotten it. Rakan broke into a bow, hopping across the cliff edge in some sort of impromptu dance.

Whether through exhaustion or just being distracted, Rakan must’ve missed a step, for he stumbled and found himself rolling down the cliff face. Xayah cried out, rushing forward. He flipped over himself several times, colliding with the hard stone, but he managed to tuck into a sideways roll as he reached the bottom before eventually coming down hard and rolling past her. A cloud of dirt rose into the air as he skidded along the ground.

“Rakan!” Xayah called out, running over to him. “Rakan?” He was slumped over on the ground, but he had somehow held onto the fruit, tucked into the palm of his hand. As he opened his eyes and groaned, he met Xayah’s stare and managed a weak smile before presenting the silver fruit to her.

“See...?” he grunted. “Piece...” he tried to say, coughing, “of cake.”

She knelt down beside him, taking it into her hands before reaching into the pouch at her waist to look for some bandages and a salve. “You idiot,” she said, biting against her tongue. “You never know how to take it easy, do you?”

“Never easy for you, miella.” Rakan lay his head back, staring up at the sky. “What’s so great about that fruit, anyways?”

Xayah took another glance at the crystalfruit in her hands. Now that she could take a closer look at it, she could note how it almost shone with the luster of a precious stone, and how it seemed to have ridges like a gem.

“It’s beautiful,” she explained, “and as you can see, really hard to get. But beside that...” She sat down on the ground next to him, stretching out her legs. “It’s supposed to be a sign of ardent love. Bright and passionate. I wanted to dedicate it to you.”

Rakan let out a sigh, rolling over onto his side. He raised his head to look at her, winking. Or was it more of a wince? “Bright, like you.”

Xayah smiled, placing a hand on her cheek. He picked the strangest times to be charming.

“And passion...” Rakan let a mischievous smile curl on his lips. “Well, I’ve got that covered.”

She shook her head. The strangest times, indeed. Leaning down, Xayah placed a kiss on his lips for a moment before pulling back and looking into his eyes. “Easy there, lover boy. Get some rest and relax for a little bit, and then maybe we can look into that...”

New Etsy Shop, New Lease on Life!

Hey everybody, long time no see! Like a bear slowly awakening after a slumber, I am finally beginning to get the energy to create and get out and about again. Texas summers can be brutal, y'all, and when the weather gets below 90 degrees for the first time in 3 months, I am literally skipping in the streets.

So back to the grind, which isn't really a grind but more of a fun colorful mish-mash of projects that have been sitting on the back burner. I promised them I would be back!

My first task was to launch my second fledgling Etsy store, CrystalFruits, this week and have a handful of my wearable ceramic pieces uploaded. We're talking pineapples, bananas, watermelons- the works!

I have been working on a lot of the branding and administrative aspects to selling these cuties, which I must admit is quite the departure from felt banners but also just as colorful and fun.
