futuristic au but make it humans and androids/cyborgs with the stereotypical "arghf i hate robots!!!" kinda people. think detroit become human kinda hatred

varian is a former human, now probs about 90% cypernetic. hugo is a human who basically uses the bots for parts to build his own inventions (including olivia :]])

varigo meet cute is varian just chillin in an alley, battered and broken up from humans who've attacked him, and hugo finding him there and literally trying to ransack him for parts, not knowing varian is very much still functioning

haven't thought of the rest much but literally any a makes my brain sizzle with happiness

little more hugo background because i like thinkin about it

unlike most people, hugo is probably generally indifferent towards bots. while he isn't really empathetic towards them, he won't go out of his way to be aggressive towards one if it isn't necessary. any unmotivated harm he causes them is probs just orders from donnie (what's she doing with the parts?? um haven't gotten that far). otherwise, he just cops parts from bots who are already out of commission to make his shit. less trouble that way.

little about varian i GUESS. he's an abnormally advanced bot with top of the line tech. modeled it himself. however, he wasn't created as a bot. they're upgrades he's given himself. whether out of necessity or otherwise, who knows, but he's now unrecognizable as a human in any way because of it.

anywho back to varian + hugo first meet, where hugo is just lookin for parts. it probs goes something like this

"gods... this shit is high tech"

cue hugo attempting to dismantle var, who's currently the equivalent of ur computer in sleep mode. hugo's rummaging sparks varian awake

"tf- excuse you???"

"OH MY FUCVK HOLY FHSIT?????"

varian uses hugo's moment of shock to promptly shove him off and onto the ground, maybe a little too harshly

"bitchass"

var stumbles to his feet and runs off (more of a quick tumble out tbh, he's fucked up bad) before hugo can do anything more. hugo is left confused as hell but now extremely interested in varian

okay okay starting with vat7k tl because there are so many tts timelines i think about and I CANT DECIDE ON ONE

let's begin with var vague backstory <33 varian was born in the dark kingdom with the moon's touch, an unfortunate thing, really. his power is unstable, unpredictable, and has caused harm to those around him on more than one occasion. after a few years of trying to get varian to control it, quirin and ulla seek out donella for help, unable to find a solution by themselves. donnie suggests looking for the eternal library for answers. shocker ulla gone now!! cue varian's future mommy issues

(umm filler filler use ur imagination to think of what happens during tts)

varian eventually somewhat gets his power under control with the help of rapunzel, yippee!! fast forward to start of vat7k. pretty much the same as canon there

pan to hugo, who has grown up with an odd fascination with the moonstone. something about its inexplicable properties catching his attention. donnie learns varian has begun going through the trials, and she tasks hugo with following them around n junk. this time, however, hugo is intrigued by the moonstone, not a promise of riches.

oooooo betrayal oooooo...... varian finds out hugo only wanted him as a test subject, not a person goddamn!! transition to angst or sum but then they all good bc hugo confesses his love or something????

my thoughts are very disorganized so shhh, but i would love love love to hear anyone elses hcs on these too <333

valentines hcs valentines hcs:

varian and hugo r touch starved so valentines day (or day of hearts ig) is spent just cuddling/being physically close

hugo asks eugene for his opinion on the gift he got varian. it's a rock. eugene tells him he thinks it's dumb and he should get something more meaningful but then when hugo gives it to varian he realizes his little brother is a Loser and has a favorite type of rock

the tangled gang did NOT know varian and hugo were in a relationship. they are in for a Hell of a surprise when they walk in on varigo kissing during the day of hearts festival

i feel like it would be one of those things varian would mention in passing like all casual (he's not. he's really excited about this.) early in their journey and hugo remembers for MONTHS until this opportunity

varian will tease him about remembering that little obscure detail like "awww, u were obsessed dude" but he's actually ecstatic

also side note but i comepletely forgot about the day of hearts

i think for hugo it was def a seemingly small moment, but something that made him realize "oh, shit. this is the one." like just a small unecessary gesture from varian that made hugo realize var cares about him, and not just what he can do for him. it's just varian remembering little details about hugo that no one else does, that's what gets him. varian is this stupid, selfless, caring creature and it's so different from what hugo's used to. it's captivating.

for varian it was something similar. the fact that hugo would just listen to him rant and ramble when no one used to want to, or understand what he was talking about. but now he has someone who gets it, someone he doesn't have to slow down for. and while varigo starts out as a rivalry it kinda blooms into varian sort of striving to learn from each other, rather than just beat the other down. their weird ass mad scientist energy matches each others perfectly and good for them good for them

kind of rant but honestly i love most of the hcs about what made them fall and i've read some cute ones <33 i would luv to hear if u have any though !! :]
