52 Crumbs from the Table of Joy by Lynn Nottage dir Leslie Holland. Crumbs tells the story of a recently widowed African American father and this two daughters who move to Brooklyn in the 1950’s, and how their lives get further complicated when the father marries a caucasian German woman. Not content to JUST be doing a 4 hour show 8 times a week, I also took the running crew job for the Outreach show in the morning. So if the 8 PM show ended around 11:30PM, then I had to reset and change, and then get home, which would usually be about 1 AM, then I would have to be back at 8AM for call, which meant leaving the apartment at a little after 7AM. While this was less than optimal, it ended up saving me when my heat was shut off in February. I slept in my winter coat for a week, and would shower at the theatre after the show, and hang out until the evening show started. Or go see a movie. Amy Farrington and I walked down to see Fargo at the Esquire once. Finally, when the idea of sleeping in my winter coat one more night broke me, I slept at the theatre. Yes - I Phantomed Steppenwolf. I locked myself into the chorus dressing room post evening show, and was unlocked in the morning for work. Once the heat got turned back on, I went back to my regular commuting schedule. The show was performed on The Libertine set so there was a lot of setting stage scenery on a handcart on a rake, which was fun. The kids really dug the show. I was also having the worst insomnia of my life. Even with a properly heated apartment I was only getting two hours of sleep a night. My roommate was rehearsing a play where he was a Charles Manson surrogate, so he had all these films about serial killers around. One night when I woke up at 3 AM, I popped in Henry; Portrait of a Serial Killer for the first time. That was fun. Eventually, the issues with our landlords became untenable and they let us out of our lease. I had nowhere to go, and no money for my own place, so it was out to the suburbs and my pop’s couch for me.
