My Cross-Cultural Communications professor shared this video on our class Facebook group. It sums up the basics of Danish society while capturing the incredibly dark, ironic, and self-deprecating Danish sense of humor. 
I have to say, I still don’t quite understand the Danish inferiority complex; they love to joke about how supposedly pathetic they are. It’s the polar opposite of the mainstream American "we’re the greatest country on earth” mentality.

Breaking down the refugee law hoopla (or as the Danish media is calling it, the “s***storm”)

Today in Cross-Cultural Communications, we started off class talking about the local and international reactions to the new law passed by Danish parliament this weekend. In case you haven’t checked the news in the last 24 hours, the Danish government will now seize cash and valuables from refugees to offset their cost of living. It’s not a total free-for-all – wedding rings and low-value items are explicitly exempt from seizures – but new asylum-seekers could potentially have to give up a lot to pay for their stay. They’ve also lengthened the waiting period for family reunification to three years.
The court of public opinion has not been kind to Danish lawmakers, especially those from Venstre, one of Denmark’s main political parties. That being said, I’ve found that the media has been misrepresenting the situation and/or leaving out some key facts. Although I absolutely do not support this measure, I still think it’s important to put this all in context. Here’s what you should know:
Proportionally, Denmark has already taken on more of its fair share of refugees than most other European countries. Denmark’s population (5.6 million) is comparable to the population of Minnesota, and it registered 21,000 asylum applications last year. This puts it far behind Sweden and Germany, who are both really struggling to provide for the hundreds of thousands of refugees they’re housing, but puts it far ahead of other prosperous European countries.
Forget about American politics for a second and try to picture Minnesota singlehandedly trying to grapple with this amount of refugees. They’re used to a very different culture, don’t speak the local language, and need food, shelter, and winter coats. It is very cold and very dark. 
Under the welfare system, anyone who steps foot in Denmark is entitled to a slew of taxpayer-funded social benefits, including universal healthcare and free education. Many of these benefits must be extended to all the refugees. Even I, as an American student living here, am entitled to universal healthcare. 
The Danes pay for these benefits through their sky-high taxes. One of my professors straight up told us on the first day of class that 55% of her income goes straight to her taxes, and that high earners have a tax rate exceeding 70%. It’s the stuff of Bernie Sanders’ dreams. 
However, refugees who haven’t yet been approved to stay in Denmark permanently and don’t speak Danish aren’t ready to contribute to Danish society in the way that the rest of the country does. This means that all of their living costs are comped by the Danish people. Many people in Denmark are not too thrilled that their tax money is paying for thousands of people who are not paying into the system, and thus, they argue that forcing refugees who aren’t so poor is only fair. This does not address the ethics of taking things from people who are fleeing unspeakable violence, or the fact that many of the refugees who are only now fleeing to Europe are doing so because they didn’t have the means to do it before (and would thus be less likely to still have lots of cash and valuables), but nevertheless this is the logic behind the law. 
It is also widely accepted in Denmark that this law is meant to discourage refugees from choosing Denmark as their asylum destination in the first place, and the government doesn’t really expect to be taking too much away from new refugees. Again - many more ethical issues to be addressed here, but this is another piece of the logic behind the law.
Denmark’s not alone here. Sweden’s already reached its breaking point. The Netherlands is telling refugees to either adopt Dutch values ASAP or pay a steep fine and leave the country. Many Danes feel they’re being set out to slaughter, when in reality, this type of law is not so out of the European mainstream. 
In my opinion, former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan really hit the nail on the head with this statement from his Facebook page:
While European states have to address the legitimate concerns of their citizens regarding the historic influx of migrants since last year, they cannot do so at the expense of their values, ideals and international law. By doing so, they offer violent movements a victory they could never have won on their own.
The passage of this new law is a troubling move, but Denmark alone can’t take the blame for this entire crisis. The entire European continent has to work together to find a solution. However, this sure ain’t helping things.
As I posted yesterday, I’ll be learning much more about how Denmark is handling the refugee crisis in my courses this semester and I’ll be sure to share what I learn.
