aaaand three more for the blanket. these were SO fun to make and adapt! i added the shell/bobble border from splendid serendipity on all of them to match my other two squares! for all three of these squares i used Lana Grossa Cotonella with a 3.5 crochet hook. :)
more details on what patterns these are under the read more!
square 1:
this is Tropical Delight (i followed the video tutorial by It’s all in a Nutshell Crochet but there’s a written pattern!) that i did until i think round 10. I skipped some decorative slip stitch rounds because once again I challenged myself with not cutting the yarn and doing the inner square in one color. For this one i was extremely lucky, the amount of stitches at the end of the round i stopped on matched the amount of stitches for the v-stitch round of splendid serendipity perfectly.
i used Lana Grossa Cotonella in color 009 (100% pima cotton) and added some Drops Safran and Drops Loves You 100% cotton yarn in between because i wanted some color contrast. the difference in texture is somewhat noticeable but i really don’t mind!
square 2:
this is The Blooming Lotus Square by Sisters in Stitch (written pattern) which is so so sos so osososo gorgeous. I finished all rounds on the flower but ended early on the actual square the flower is sorta appliquéd to. i actually ended up missing some cluster stitches on one of the inner petals, but it’s not noticeable at all! this one also required some creative freedom on where to place my v-stitches because i cannot count apparently.
again Lana Grossa Cotonella yarn, in color 003. i bought this one twice because i wanted to use parts of it for square 3, but ended up scrapping that plan, which meant i could work on both the flower and the back square simultaneously without cutting the yarn again, because i’m silly like that. i did end up cutting a large chunk of pink out, because it looked very newborn baby blanket and i didn’t quite like that.
square 3:
this is the Octagram Kaleidoscope Block by Debi Dearest. I did some fuckery on this one. I had to square it up earlier than the pattern and so i just adapted some of the squaring up stitches from splendid serendipity and.. added my own nonsense. I wouldn’t be able to replicate it lol. It was extremely fun but in hindsight it might have been smarter to copy the corners from tropical delight, would have been less of a pain in my ass probably. the inner part ended up slightly too big in comparison to the other squares i’ve done, so i had to go down on stitch height for the border, while still keeping the same amount of stitches as all the other squares. It’s still a slightly bit bigger, but that doesn’t matter as long as stitch count matches :)
For this one i used the rest of the yarn from square 1 (Lana Grossa Cotonella color 009) and then did some fun transplanting with Cotonella color 002 in the squaring up corners. it worked out really really well, and i love the intense effect the red/purple border has!

Crochet tumblrrrrr i have another question!!!😫
Still working on this pillow pattern
Tumblr media
Still making tests, and these are the instructions for the bobble panel
Tumblr media
Standard i assume, right? This is what the test panel looks like.
Tumblr media
Ok, alright. I assume i did this right based on the instructions, right?
So then why does the side(?) Panel in the picture look like THIS??????
Tumblr media
Why does it look so jagged?????? Mine is pretty much straight on each edge, why is their side so jagged???? Did they tuck the edge in or something??? Did i mess up??? Cus the instructions for seaming it doesn't mention anything about tucking in the edge, infact if anything it tells you NOT to tuck in the edge on any side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I'm lost why the pattern's side picture looks different. And if you look at the sides in A for the full front panel you can see her's is straight too, so where did this jaggedness come from? Also the seaming doesn't even mention what to do at a corner for seaming, shouldn't i be slip stitching 2-3x in the corner? Should i not?? And it also mentions that the sides stitches seaming won't match up pefectly because they dont have the same number of rows, but then they also dont explain how youre supposed to handle that issue, do you just igonore the extra rows on the other side and stitch straight across??
This seems like it should be auch a simple pattern and yet it's making me so confused, like i almost have more questions than answers the more i reread it and try to understand and try it. Maybe because i crochet/knit so infrequently I'm still a beginner at it but idk i feel like I'm missing instructions or something.

News Coo Delivery for Penguin!!
It’s a package wrapped with white wrapping paper. Painted on it was an arctic landscape with little penguins playing around a swimming hole, and the Polar Tang in the distance. Inside was a handwritten note with a little sketch of Pen himself in the corner.
‘Hey!
I hope this finds you in time! Dunno how the news coos are gonna find you guys underwater, but even if it doesn’t, I know you’ll get it eventually. Anyways! I’ve been trying some crochet lately, and I think I managed to replicate your hat! Even put some fleece in it for whenever it gets cold on your travels. Though, thinking about it, I guess your normal hat already does that. Ahhh I don’t have time to make something else!! And making the brim was hard!!! Whatever! I still hope you like it, even if you don’t wanna wear it.
Hope to see you soon!
- Usopp :^)’
And sure enough, inside the box was a knitted, fleece-lined version of Penguin’s hat, with two added bobbles on strings on the bottom. ( @gxdmade )
| @gxdmade
Tumblr media
ㅤ⠀The Tang had made port for a supply run. The sky was clear, the wind was warm, and those who opted to remain on the Tang were enjoying the weather. Like Penguin, who had sprawled out on the roof of the tang, sunning himself as if he were some sort of reptile rather than a Selkie. But it was in his nature to enjoy lounging, and this was certainly no different.
ㅤ⠀When the News Coo dropped the package unceremoniously, Penguin had all but snatched it up curiously ( and a touch nosey ). Realizing it was for him- from Usopp ( be still, dear heart ) - he wasted no time in ripping the package open with the small claws that sat at the ends of his fingers, cautious to preserve the painting on the box. Perhaps he’d hang it in his bunk…
ㅤ⠀He read the note once, twice, three times, until he could hear Usopp’s voice ins his mind reading it with the little mannerisms that came with it ( wide eyes, gesturing vaguely, fretting at the end before waving a hand- ), before he set it aside to pull the hat out carefully. His fingers brushed across the stitches; how long had it taken him? Smiling to himself, he reached up to pull his normal cap off, replacing it with this new one. Ah… Soft.
ㅤ⠀He’d have to wear it the next time they got to see each other. And maybe send a thank you note…

Tell me more about Ferret making blankets and stuff?
He's mostly a crochet guy, but he knits occasionally too. He likes to have something to do when the Savage is in working order and doesn't need any repairs. He keeps a few for himself, the ones he really likes, but mostly he stockpiles them to sell at various markets. He's a trader/smuggler by trade, so he likes having his own wares to sell sometimes. (This means that children in all corners of the galaxy have blankets made by our favorite Grumpy Boy. Just think about that for a second.) As an orpahn and former street rat, he also frequently donates them to kidds he sees that are clearly living in alleys.
His absolute favorite one that hes made is a black blanket with multi-colored stripes with little bobble stitches throughout it. He keeps it on his bunk.

Garden Variety, part i : other people’s patterns + group shots
Tumblr media
[Image description: a mess of 14 crocheted flowers. Many of them are granny squares, but 2 are hexagons, 1 is a pentagon, and 1 is a septagon. Many use either a dark blue yarn or a green yarn with foil which sparkles faintly in the natural lighting. Descriptions of the individual flowers are included in their personal portraits in this post and the next. End image description.]
These flowers are presented as a uquiz, but all the pictures are divided between this post and the next post so there is space for additional pictures. I’ve done my best with photo descriptions, but some of them might be a little, ahem, flowery. Some of the uquiz descriptions will be included, others omitted.
African Flowers - blue and pink
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image description: Top image contains two “African flower” style crocheted hexagons. The one in the upper left is predominantly blue with brown border and center. In the lower right is a predominantly pink flower with a yellow center and white border. In the second picture is just the pink hexagonal flower with a yellow center and pink/purple/white petal edges. The border is white, and the flower rests on a black background which makes the colors more vibrant. End image description]
Pink uquiz description: “There are so many "African flower" patterns it's hard to say where I learned this one initially. Do you remember when Maude asks Harold what flower he would be, and he says "One of these, because they're all the same." But they're not all the same at all, and Maude points this out to him and shows him how some droop to the left or are missing petals, etc. The pink/purple/white yarn at the edges of your petals align with the white border in one place, bringing the border into your heart. Two petals clockwise (at 9 o’clock) from this is the spot you can tell the rows all started, because yellow cotton filaments break from one another and you can tell one of them is a row of chains rather than a true double crochet.”
Tumblr media
“Crochet Bobble Drops Flower Granny Square” comes to us from crochetforyourblog.com and, will you look at that? it’s on some joker’s blog! (mine, i’m not making fun of the pattern maker, thank you for this lovely pattern)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image description: First image: blue square. A dark blue flower with 16 bulging, teardrop shaped petals. Every 4th petal cuts up through a pale blue to the think dark blue border. It sits on a black background. Second image: a crocheted square with a blue border. The same blue yarn makes a 16-pointed flower. Every 4th point or petal reaches through a sparkly green space toward the border. An errant strand of foil sparkles on the blue flower. The square is sitting on a black background. End ID]
I made two because I really loved how the first (the top, all-blue) one turned out, and because it had a wintry vibe, I used a yarn bought from a Xmas display for a Yule mask last year.
Nick’s Series - original pattern
Tumblr media
[image description: a small brown and blue speckled square held in a white hand. One corner is gently nudged forward at the top by my index finger. In the middle of the square is a blue flower with six petals. They cast a blue shadow on the flower's circular center. end ID]
Blue uquiz description: “I made you, and Nick said he liked you, which resulted in 3 more in rapid succession before I lost the impromptu pattern. It's since lost, but you remain. A hand-sized square intended initially as a way to explore pulling yarn through lower rows, or through the center over other layers, hiding them deep inside you, you would have made it difficult to be written, anyway. This one remains my favorite out of the four flowers in Nick's Series, and it is the only of the flowers photographed in my hand for this quiz.”
This is, in fact, the result the series’ namesake got when I had him test the quiz, so I think the quiz is rather accurate for that reason alone. In the quiz, you can also get the white flower, or Nick’s favorites (which we might call sherbet and purple to distinguish them) as options.
Tumblr media
[image description: a green square arranged as a diamond on a black background. There is a white flower in the middle with 6 petals like squiggles. end description]
Tumblr media
[image description: 2 squares matching in construction but not color. They're arranged vertically on a black background. The flowers have 6 petals each. The top has a purple/pink/white flower on a brown background with pale blue speckles. Its corners are more defined than the slightly rounder one below which has a green background and a blue/green/pink/orange/red flower.]
Tumblr media
[image description: all 4 of the previous flowers arranged in a square on a black background with the blue and sherbet flowers on top and white and purple on the bottom. End ID.]
To be honest, they look best together where you can see that half are solid flowers, and half are speckled borders, and these halves overlap. If the pattern was to be duplicated, there had to be 4 in the end, not 2 or 3. What I loved about the first one of these was honestly how the back looks:
Tumblr media
[image description: the backs of two crocheted squares: sherbet with its green border on the right and blue with its brown and blue border on the left. From behind, you can see that the sherbet or blue “flower” is a circle of tightly packed stitches surrounding a circular hole against the black background. End ID.]
Sherbet and Blue are my favorites, if you were wondering.

Special Instructions To begin putting together your Sobble, sew the fin to the top of his head. Do your best to angle it straight forward! Then take the fin stripe and sew it to the front of the fin. Next sew the cheek patches to the front of his head at the bottom corners of the triangle formed by changing colours. Now is a good time to stuff the body and sew it to the back of the head. Then sew the belly patch to his tummy, making sure that it touches the light blue part on the head! next sew two of the limbs on each side of the body right behind the head. Keep them low to the ground! After that sew the remaining two limbs to the bottom of the body. Again, keep 'em low! To make the tail, take the tail ball and wrap the tail around it once. Secure the shape by running a few stitches through it. Then sew the tail to the back of the body near to the booty. If you choose to neele felt the eyes onto your amigurumi, then begin by forming two circles with black roving right above the cheek patches. Next take some blue roving and form a semi-circle around the lower, outer edge of each eye. Finally take some white roving and form a small dot towards the middle, upper part of each eye. Now you're done!

Sampling Stitches: An Update
Tumblr media
I’ve been exploring my scientific side with my latest pattern - namely, I’ve been trying to answer the question “What crochet stitch uses the most yarn?”. Sure, I could test a few popular stitches and be done with it, but what’s the fun in that? So, I’m testing 50+ stitches in a comprehensive experiment, and to avoid wasting all that yarn, I’ll be making all my samples into a blanket when I’m finished!
I’ll be releasing an affordable pattern for the blanket with instructions on how you can do your own experiment. I’ll be publishing the results of my experiment on my blog for free as well, but you may find your results are slightly different due to variations in tension, yarn, hook, etc.
Tumblr media
I’m also accepting suggestions for stitches that people are interested in seeing as part of this experiment. So far, these stitches have already been included:
Single Crochet
Half Double Crochet
Double Crochet
Treble Crochet
Linen Stitch
Alpine Stitch
Thermal Stitch
Star Stitch
And these stitches are already planned to be included:
Corner to Corner Stitch
Basket Weave Stitch
Puff Stitch
Bobble Stitch
Popcorn Stitch
Granny Square
What is your favorite stitch? To submit a stitch suggestion, email me at [email protected] with the keywords ‘Stitch Suggestion’ somewhere in your subject line, or reply to my Ravelry thread on the subject HERE.

Crochet Hugs & Kisses Shawl by Jeanne Steinhilber
Crochet Hugs & Kisses Shawl
My friends at The Crochet Crowd Stitch Social have challenged and inspired me to crochet more and more Hugs & Kisses designs.  It’s my pleasure to introduce you to my latest design of the Hugs & Kisses Shawl.  This is one of the easier of the series so far to crochet.
I started and restarted this one a few times before I decided to use the Caron Big Cakes in Afternoon Tea.  I had 2 of these cakes on hand, but just wasn’t sure if I enjoyed the colors.  It wasn’t until I started hooking and watching these beautiful colors start to blend that I watched this blossom into a lovely project.
Of course, you can use your favorite cakes or even try it in a solid color.  And this would make an awesome prayer shawl for a special person that needs comfort.
