15. recommend and review a book.
The Land of Open Graves by Jason DeLeon. This is actually a book I had to read for intro anthro like two years ago but it seems like something you might be vaguely interested in?? Described as an "ethnology of death," it's about migrants in the Sonoran Desert and the stories and objects they leave behind. Of course, it's also about how this is an intentional policy - to force migrants into the desert - by the US to deter immigration, and critiquing that "prevention through deterrence." Definitely brutal (I remember the parts where they mimic how bodies decompose in the desert vividly) but it's a book I actually think about which counts for a lot. Idk. Might not be up your alley? idk. But the only other book that is coming to kind is Pachinko by Min Jin Lee which I feel like a lot of people have read already. But it's really good as well!
20. what are things you look for in a book?
Like everyone else, I'm a bit arbitrary...
Good writing. I like to vary the kinds of books I read so I like to see different styles as well.
Draws you through the narrative. I don't like it when it takes a couple hundred pages for the book to pick up but I also don't like it when there's a lot of anticipation and then whatever happens is dumb.
Some sort of interesting view on something (specific, huh!). I like when a book makes me think of something new or consider something in a new way or challenge me.
I would say I like about 1/3 of the books I read to be fun. Either pop fiction or fantasy (Terry Pratchett!) or just something readable... And then maybe 1/3 informational (usually history or like... about bands) and 1/3 challenging or classic or literary. this isn't exact because i truly go to the library and pick up anything that catches my eye but. More or less.
Tldr... I mostly I want to enjoy (at least somewhat) reading the book and I want it to make me think...
