sometimes i get the sense that reid is more attached to gideon than gideon is to reid. obviously they both serve as surrogates for the family member each is estranged from (gideon is estranged from his son and reid is estranged from his dad) but.

you know. reid clings to gideon, not physically but emotionally, and i think a lot of his wellbeing at the start of the series relies on gideon's presence. gideon almost certainly knows the most about reid out of anyone on the team—i don't think canon ever says that reid has told gideon about diana, but i would imagine he has—and i think reid feels understood by him in a way he doesn't by other people, even compared to the rest of the team who (mostly) try their best. i think he also tends to try to be as good and deserving as possible of gideon's presence, since he definitely at least partially feels like his father left because he wasn't good enough.

on the flipside, while gideon definitely sees reid as a son, he's...not the best dad. i think we see him repeating a lot of the mistakes that drove a wedge between him and stephen with reid, and i think that had mandy patinkin stayed on, we would have gotten a larger parallel there. he holds him at arms length, trying not to get too close, although he definitely cares about him more than he lets on and the mask slips sometimes, like this moment and on the plane after ldsk.

Episode 12 – What Fresh Hell

Hey guys! So last episode was like so intense, I was on the verge of like – what the actual fuck is going on here? – the entire episode. This episode’s name isn’t really better, but let’s hope we get more Penelope, at least.

Alrighty, let’s get to it.

Ok, so I paused the episode on 00:00 right before I went to work so it was queued up, and to be honest? It just came on like this:

Ok, so bitchy mom coach and she’s just being mean to her daughter. Ugh. I would have had a bad attitude if I had a mom like that.

Um, a stranger comes up to you, you go away! You walk away! Ugh. He’s a smart bastard, but seriously why do people have to be so fucked up to lure kids into their cars and kidnap them? Damn it.

Lol, so it’s kind of obvious that Gideon didn’t send Penelope the flowers but I love her so much for being so appreciative of his appreciation. I can’t with her!

What’s BTW? Oh Gideon,  you poor puppy.

Whoa, Gideon just took stuff personally. I love him. I get him, how the fuck can a guy who claims to be devoted to his daughter turn off his cell. Sure he was in the hospital, but come on. Oh, wait, he has cancer. But still. He should’ve responded sooner.

Whoa, that mom is aggressive! “What’s a pedophile sex freak?” oh, shit, how can you explain that to a kid?

Aw, their attitude to kids is the cutest ever!

How can a girl talk to a stranger? Isn’t that the first rule people drill into kids’ heads? Don’t talk to strangers.

It goes against procedures, sure, but you’re already in enough trouble with this abduction case, so it times to go off book and try and lure him out. Come on, dick, think outside the box.

But we still don’t know who the body belonged to.

Oh no. That reporter is bad news. They found the body but didn’t tell the parents so they wouldn’t panic, but come on. No need to panic them.

And it’s finally confirmed that the body wasn’t Billie. Just awful that they put that amount of fear on the two of them, Jesus fucking Christ.

Just go and find the little fucker who thinks it’s okay to abduct a kid. Blah.

He got sick. He didn’t want them to see him die, so he filed for divorce? That guy is a coward. Can’t believe I thought I was defending him. So the mom took on the responsibility and painted a picture where she was the bad guy so the girl would still have a positive picture of her dad? Oh my god, that woman is beyond amazing. I’m sorry honey for being so harsh on you. You’re amazing. But you shouldn’t ever say that your daughter is a pain, okay?

Gideon is one amazing guy and I want him to stay forever on this show. This show will collapse without him, I know it.

‘Holy smokes! That was fast!’ yeah, you call the FBI about a suspect regarding kidnapping, their response is the fastest ever. And to be honest? You look creepy, too. But yeah your profile of Don is definitely on point.

Just get the bastard already and save Billie, you have less than 9 minutes to figure this out.

Weighing the law against the price of a door? That’s a kid inside that might die, come on! Fuck that! You go, Gideon, you go!

Oh wow, that’s a gun cocked straight into the forehead. Damn. Just find the kid, please.

What are those fluffy white things? Wait, he’s hiding her in the vents? How fucked up does a guy have to be? Oh my god. The poor thing, oh my goodness. Fuck. This is the most fucked up kidnapping I’ve ever seen. Jesus fuck. Aw, Gideon is like the cutest thing ever and oh my god I’m just broken over this. But at least they found her okay. Fuck.

No way, Spencer just won in poker. Word.

Hahaha Hotch sent Garcia flowers in Gideon’s name. I love him. “I already sent her a gift, an MP3 player, lasts longer. Unless she drops it or the battery dies, whichever comes first.” So she has two gifts now. “So she’ll think I’m sweet on her.” Elle’s face of doubt. Oh god. I love this show so fucking much. And Gideon is the fucking best in the entire world.

Oh wait, those photos on his mantel aren’t his family, but the victims he saved? Oh my god I love you beyond measure, Gideon, you perfect puppy.

 Alrighty, so that’s it for episode 12. This was amazing. I loved every bit of it, it had the right level of emotion for a crime series, the right amount of comedic relief, the right amount of character development, just awesome.

can't post it because it's hard to communicate through screencaps and i dont know how to get video but the poker scene at the end of s01e12 what fresh hell is immaculate. the way reid says "two pair...of aces." the team's reactions. morgan shoving reid. morgan doing the "yap yap yap" motion with his hand while reid says that poker is math. hotch saying "he's from vegas." i've rewinded it three times this rewatch and im probably going to go rewind it again. it's perfect. if anyone has video or gifs of it i will love you forever if you share them.
