Boys, I hate to risk your ire by writing about cricket again, but today is an important day for us willowheads, us boundary-jockeys, us wicketfiends. Today me and other followers of the slow game celebrate the 100th test match of a true colossus of the game - Hashim Amla. Amla is one of the most iconic South African cricketers and I want to pay tribute to him in the only way I know how - with amixture of legit facts and hot garbage that I just made up. So please, cricketpals, read and admire the man, the myth, the beard that is Hashim Amla. Amla's nickname is Hash (or #). Like me you're probably thinking he got that name because of a just savage marijuana habit, but you'll be suprised to learn that it is actually a shortening of his name "Hashim"- cricketers are very creative with their nicknames. Hash has probably never smoked that sweet green angel grass because he is a functioning Muslim! In fact, when the team was sponsored by Castle Lager Hash was like "nah son, I don't go for that alcohol vibe, Imma wear my own special uniform without that beer logo and just be sponsored by my number 1 boy - Muhammad, peace be upon him". Luckily the team is now sponsored by Sunfoil Oil (seriously though, how? How do they have the money to sponsor things? I do not understand the world). Some say Amla's beard is actually a symbiotic alien that bestows upon him a mighty skill in the game of cricket in return for a home on his sweet face and a steady diet of pie crumbs and spilled tea. Seeing Hash's sweet sweet face mullet is what convinced a young me to rock the bearded look, and we were pioneers as now almost everyone has a beard like its the fucking 1800s again, which judging by the current political climate it might as well be, am I right? Fuck Trump. Amla has scored over 7500 runs in tests, at an average of 50 per innings. That is pretty dope! He also scored the highest individual score for SA of 311 not out. 311 is also the name of a shitty white boy ska reggae band, who I am sure history has forgotten, but who I am cursed to remember forever. The band 311 has a turntable-ist (seriously, fuck these guys) named Doug "SA" Martinez and "SA" is short for South Africa!!! I smell a conspiracy that goes all the way to the TOP! I don't know him personally (I am sure we would be friends if I did know him though) but by all accounts Amla is an incredibly sweet, humble, intelligent man, and a total credit to cricket, South Africa and beards. I hope he lives forever and plays a thousand more test matches. Seriously, look at his twitter bio, that is so pure!
