Chapter 411 - Nami vs. Kalifa

Wendell Wendell Chopper is fucking shit up. Sanji is depressed and gonna get crushed by the floor. The feminist who's even better than a German person is even more confused than an Icelandic person.

Nami realizes she needs to get wet, so she elaborately activates water.

Chapter 412 - You Missed Your Chance

Okay I love that the "stupidly-shaped shadow clones" combat technique also involved the "normally-shaped one" being a shadow clone. ...Sorry for being so normal about all this, it's just hard for my impenetrably goofy persona to withstand the sheer power of Nami. Such is her nature as the greatest member of the crew.

Okay, I'll go back to abnormal now. Probably.

The feminist disperses the shadow clones with a big wall, but Nami uses her Ultra Lightning Beam to kill the feminist.

Kyngpin comes and asks her about Wendell Wendell Chopper.

Wendell Wendell Chopper pays Zoro and Sniper King a visit. Zoro starts to feel bad for him, and says "Puppy is clearly dying :(".

The napping animal rights activist decides he doesn't care that much about animal rights, and that he'll instead make the puppy die faster. Zoro decides to do a Cool Attack as a political protest.

Kyngpin and Nami show up to solve every problem simultaneously. It's really convenient for everyone involved.

Chapter 413 - Hunter

Spamton NEO stabs Nico Robin with an elephant.

Usopp With The Personality Sanded Off stabs a random rock with a giraffe face.

The napping animal wrongs activist stabs Sniper King with a clever ruse.

Nami starts yelling about Usopp for some reason.

Sanji gets tired of not getting to beat anyone up this arc and decides to beat up the napping animal wrongs activist.

Chapter 414 - Sanji vs. Jabra

THAT'S THE HOMESTUCK NUMBER!!! Wait, no it isn't.

Sanji explains that having the floor falling towards his head was a good thing, not a bad thing. Nami says that it's a bad thing that it was a good thing.

SANJI WANTS SNIPER KING TO BE NORMAL ABOUT WOMEN!!!

What happens next is a Sanji fight, which is to say that it's not very interesting.

Chapter 415 - Heat Up

It still isn't very interesting.

Nothing is very interesting about it.

Hrmm? What the...? His leg is Finding Dory...!!

Sanji wins by using his Finding Dory leg to unleash a homing attack aimed directly at the napping animal wrongs activist's Dory.

Chapter 416 - Zoro vs. Kaku

Oh no! Sanji has developed a God Complex!

Kyngpin asks if Lufpy wants help fighting Matt Engarde, but Lufpy says no, because then it wouldn't be a 1v1 anymore. Instead, he tells Kyngpin to just walk past Matt Engarde and ignore the fact that Matt Engarde is guarding the door. (Ohhh... is THAT why he's called Matt EnGARDE?! Because he's a GUARD?! I only just now realized that.)

Meanwhile, Usopp With The Personality Sanded Off is playing Minecraft with his friend Zoro. :)

Chapter 417 - Asura

Wanze! Wanze! Wanze! He’s a cook. He’s a cooooook. He’s a cook, cook, cook. Wanze! Mad! Mad, mad!

Okay, Usopp With The Personality Sanded Off giving a whole speech about how he can use his adaptability to use his long limbs for an attack even if he has a short neck, and then immediately just using a long neck attack... is a pretty good joke.

Anyway, Zoro and Usopp With The Personality Sanded Off continue exchanging blows until they get all tuckered out and Zoro ends it all with a super move.

Chapter 418 - Luffy vs. Rob Lucci

Nico Robin hates the floor, so she decides to eat it.

Lufpy was wrong about Kyngpin being able to just walk past Matt Engarde.

However, Lufpy uses a super move to let Kyngpin just walk past him.

Chapter 419 - Legend of a Hero

Spamton NEO isn't tired of harassing Nico Robin yet. Kyngpin shows up but he does it wrong. Spamton NEO explodes. Everyone shows up and does it correctly, including Kyngpin who I guess is getting a do-over.

Sniper King helps Kyngpin complete his key collection.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but no to the last three sentences. The Hong Kong arc of S-Classes that I Raised (where Yoojin gets kidnapped to take down the slave auction in Hong Kong) is in/around novel chapter 120 (that's when he gets kidnapped, though there's planning before that) and ends around chapter 128 (that's when Han Yoojin gets back to the airport in South Korea, though there's follow-up after that), which is in volumes 5-6 of the ebooks. The manhwa adaptation of this arc, starting with Yoojin's kidnap, is episode 112, and Yoojin gets back to the airport in South Korea in episode 121.

The novel ebook art you're using above (full below) is from long after that, from volume 17:

It's from around the early chapter 400s (around 413/slightly after), in a very, very different arc. It hasn't been adapted in the manhwa yet (the manhwa isn't even up to the 200s as of June 2024). The cast was in China during this arc (and technically still is for this, though this art is when they're in a Chinese dungeon that's designed to be a fake version of South Korea), but it's for different reasons, and if I recall correctly, they're not in Hong Kong at all.

As for what he wears during the auction in Hong Kong, I'm not seeing his clothing described at all in the novel, so I think the manhwa crew just took creative license when adapting it (which is normal; geunseo-nim doesn't tend to describe clothes unless it's Yoojin talking about Hyunje or the kids, character introductions, or the Chuseok chapter).

I was scrolling tiktok when i read a comment that, in short, say kim dokja will blush if he sees yoojin during the hong kong arc.

In the novel, yoojin wears cheongsam by the way. Which the manhwa changes. What a shame.

Things i didn’t like about Homestuck in Retrospect

it’s not 413 anymore, so i feel like it’s less rude to do this now.

Anyways, Homestuck was... a big thing, as we know. Looking back on it though, there are a lot of things i didn’t particularly enjoy, or thought would be better if different.

Notes: I’m writing these thoughts down as they come. so some may seem related, contradictory, or entirely the same as others. Also this is specifically about the webcomic itself, not about the fandom.

The primary story was best when it was just John’s group and the Exiles, with Trolls just being online cameos.

The Trolls entire arc and session would have been better off as a related, but entirely separate story.

Lord English was a mistake and should never have been included into the story. if he absolutely must exist, he should never have been a primary antagonist, and instead simply a powerful background entity akin to the eldritch horrors.

The Midnight Crew, The Felt, Doc Scratch, and possibly English if he was absolutely needed, would have been better off as a related, but entirely separate story.

Jane and Co’s storyline could probably have been mostly the same and joined in with John and Co’s story near the second half. Could probably keep the condense? idk.

Bec noir should have been the primary antagonist. Because unlike SOME people, he actually had a proper setup to BE the primary antagonist. and everyone actually had motivations against him that made SENCE.

I love Meenah, but the whole Dancestors arc could probably have been dropped entirely without much loss.

The ideal story: Homestuck, but remove the Trolls (exceptions can be them pestering the humans and giving them clues and etc), remove the intermission, completely Delete Lord Engish, Bec Noir is the primary threat, maybe give the Exiles a bit more to do, John and co meet up with Jane and co and beat up Bec Noir together. Maybe use some of the freed-up space to better develop Jane and co as well.

Jane’s group were kind of underdeveloped and could have used a lot more work. give them something to do other then wait around in a dead session.

the Eldrich Horrors could do with having more of an impact. i really thought we were going somewhere when we first saw them in [S] Jade: Wake up.

John’s retcon powers could probably have been completely dropped without issue. firstly since English is no longer an unnecessary primary antagonist, and secondly so we could have a single coherent narrative instead of jumping multiple edited timelines.

The intermission was honestly endlessly boring, and could probably have been completely removed without issue. Just everything about them. The Felt, English, Midnight Crew, Snowman, Doc Scratch, they could have been entirely removed from canon and it still would have been a good, if not better story.

Maybe you could have some side-references in the Troll story about the midnight crew, as they WERE exiles from the Troll session. maybe they could still be fighting the felt, but don’t make an entire arc about it, and definitely don’t try to explain where the felt came from. and definitely DEFINATELY don’t tie them in to Mr. “why am i even here?” English.

Caliborn’s entire arc should have been a related, but entirely separate story. if included at all. i honestly enjoyed English more when i didn’t know his origin.

By far, Homestuck was most interesting when the plot was about Sburb itself. how it functioned, what you needed to do, what the point was. If Bec Noir was the perfect active primary antagonist who wanted to hurt everyone, Sburb was the perfect passive antagonist who was simultaneously a character and yet not a character at all. The setting itself can be an antagonist, just look at early seasons of the walking dead. or the film “Cube”

Meenah bailing on her relationship with dead!Vriska in order to go to war with RetconAlive! Vriska was honestly bullshit.

Dead!Vriska deserved better.

the squared sprites were hell. Davepeta especially. Did they really need to flash like that? Epileptics everywhere weep.

Bec Noir probably did not disserve a redemption arc. Or at the very least, not one that amounted to “baped with a newspaper and met a pretty girl.”

i have no strong opinions one way or the other about the epilogues or homestuck 2. of the epilogs, I’ve only read meat, and it was hella long. i never read candy because i suspect it’s equally long. never read homestuck 2 because i wanted to finish the epilogs first.

from the meat epilogue though... fuck lord english and that stupid plot point. john and terezi hooking up in a floating car orbiting a black hole was neat though.

So i understand that the Condence had animal-controlling powers and could make Jade go grimbark and all, but did she really need to be shelved for that long? Give the girl a tinfoil hat or something idk

why didn’t Roxy and John hook up? i mean come on, that stuff was built up so much and just went nowhere.

Hussie as a character in Homestuck itself was a mistake.

Honestly would it be so bad if after winning the game, everyone just made or settled on a new earth-like planet? like why does it specifically need to be earth?

A consistent art style would be nice. Going from sprites to paintings to pixels and back again was all kind of janky and a bit confusing.

at this point I’m not sure i can think of anything else. so until further notice this is a comprehensive list of all my gripes with Homestuck as a webcomic. Feel free to add your own.

Nancy Drew Season 2 Episode 7 Review: The Legend of the Murder Hotel

At some point, the fact that the town of Horseshoe Bay contains a hotel where the walls occasionally weep blood will stop being surprising, and yet, here we are. It’s just another week on Nancy Drew! Granted, Room 413 in the Breaker Hotel may be at least partially an owner-run hoax – Nancy isn’t even sure that anyone even died there, in the end – but it wouldn’t shock me if it actually turned out to be haunted anyway. Practically everything else in this town is, after all.

When a college girl goes missing under mysterious circumstances at the infamous Horseshoe Bay during a hazing incident, her would-be teammates do what any frightened young women might – immediately turn to Nancy Drew for help. They’re fans of the Nancy Drew News blog, and well aware of her interest in investigating all things supernatural. And they’re convinced that something terrible has taken, and possibly done something terrible to their friend.

With the end of the Lucy Sable mystery and the defeat of the Aglaeca, Nancy Drew’s focus is understandably shifting. Gone – at least for the moment – is the larger overarching case for our girl detective to solve, and in its place are more self-contained monster-of-the-week style stories. This isn’t a bad thing, necessarily, and it’s a change that likely wouldn’t have felt quite as jarring had the Dead Lucy and Aglaeca stories wrapped up last season the way they were originally supposed to.

That said, last week’s haunted dead body and this week’s deathtrap hotel are compelling enough stories on their own terms, and there are multiple longer arcs threaded through the background (Ryan’s plotting to bring down his family, Carson’s attempt to rehabilitate his reputation, literally everything going on with George) that it doesn’t feel like either of these installments are happening in a vacuum. Plus, “The Legend of the Murder Hotel” does manage to tie George’s Odette Lamar possession/body sharing problem into the larger case of the week, which allows our favorite girls to stop keeping secrets from one another.

In the end, however, “The Legend of the Murder Hotel” is actually one of Nancy Drew’s least supernaturally tinged-episodes. Yes, there are a couple of good jump scares, such as when the creepy hotel owner discovers the Drew Crew in his staging area full of recorded screams and containers of blood. But other than the revelation of Odette, nothing about this story actually involves ghosts at all.

Unless you count the ghosts of the people we all once thought we’d grow up to be.

In the end, it turns out that nothing actually happened to Jennifer. She wasn’t killed, or sucked into a parallel dimension, or forced to haunt the halls of the Breaker Hotel herself. Instead, she’s just a girl who tried to run away. Exhausted and confused by her college experience, Jennifer took the opportunity to try and disappear, to run away from a life where she got what she’d been told to want, but no longer recognized herself now that she had. She spends most of the episode hiding at the local bus station, wrestling over her choices and trying to decide whether or not to leave town for good.

Nancy Drew Season 2 Episode 5 Review: The Drowned Woman

This all naturally speaks to Nancy, who has been struggling since the show began with her decision to give up on her educational dreams after her mom’s death. And the thing is, it’s easy to see her going either way now – she’s brilliant, so one has to assume Nancy would excel in college, and probably end up in a forensic science program or something.

But she’s also made a real place for herself in Horseshoe Bay on her own terms – and a life that has nothing to do with her reputation in school or whose daughter she happens to be. Even if, at the moment, she can’t even decide which last name to claim. Has she made mistakes? Sure. It’s certainly unlikely that doing court-ordered community service in the town morgue was on her list of college resume enhancers. But it’s a punishment she earned saving her friends, and that mostly seems like a fair trade, even now.

“Maybe you’re not who you thought you should be. But who you are now is still pretty badass,” Jennifer tells her, looking (rightly) a bit starstruck as she hears all that she’s managed to come through in the past year. And that’s probably the best explanation of Nancy this show has ever offered – maybe she’s not who everyone thought the precocious girl detective she once was would grow up to be. But that’s not the end of the world – it’s just another part of her story.

Additional Thoughts

Is it wrong that I kind of still want a genuine episode about a real Horseshoe Bay murder hotel?

It’s the return of the Bobbsey Twins! (Or at least one of them.) Yes!

Ace and Amanda are clearly going to be a thing, and I don’t hate it because Ace is adorable and deserves the entire world. But I also still want him to ultimately be with Nancy? They have a private server! Come on!

I do love the women of Horseshoe Bay finally realizing what a catch Ace is, though.

“All I’ve got is 50s.” (How have I come to love Ryan Hudson this much?!?!)

“Think about it: Horseshoe Bay’s two biggest tourist draws are lobster rolls and ghosts.”

I’m sorry Bess has a secret husband?! Though truly, I’m in favor of anything that gives Maddison Jaizani more to do and I always thought the idea of her con artist/kleptomaniac background was interesting.

Morning, Rosy! I'm curious if you're willing to share how you think Bellarke could feasibly play out in 412-413 knowing what we know now about their character arcs, relationship to each other over the whole series, and limited info we have about where the story is going. Like if anything does happen, who do you see initiating it? Is it a moment of calm or fear/danger or confession over the walkies because they're separated, etc.? Also, I don't understand how it's believable that all Sky Crew 1/2

& the delinquents especially have been living together for months now, hyper-bonded, and no one has outright said to Clarke, “We know you love Bellamy best.” or “admit your feelings for him before it’s too late.” Or vice versa. Even Jaha called Abby out for her love of Marcus (which was no secret). But the space babies are way closer than Abby and Jaha, and it’s like nobody is willing to touch it with a 10-foot pole. Is this just a narrative choice by the writers to rev the tension up? I 2/3

3/3 know we’ve gotten call-outs over the seasons from RavenALIE & Murphy to Bell and Lxa and AbbyALIE and Finn to Clarke, but they weren’t exactly direct. They were roundabout. The world is ending, literally crumpling around them. People are at desperate breaking points, proclaiming their love and devotion and loyalty left and right. So what’s up with Bellarke? I see them leaving together on one final adventure team trip to go save Raven. Who will address it first? I always thought Clarke, but I’m getting closer to Bellamy, what with Clarke of course feeling ashamed for what she’s done and probably that he hates her now/again. Which she has definitely felt before. She is in no way certain of how Bellamy feels about her. Especially since Bellamy has been doing that “I couldn’t tell her I loved her, even with the world ending” thing and his resolution with Octavia and conviction that life should be worth living. 

I was recently wondering if it wouldn’t slip out accidentally. Like, “you’re crazy if you think I’m going to let the woman I love go off on a suicide mission without me.” That would be an interesting turn of events. Like he just takes it for granted at this point.

As for no one calling them out directly, I have a new theory that The Ark would have to have some cultural rules about butting into people’s personal lives. Three thousand people living forever on a closed ship.
