Description// Janus is one of the many grim reapers whose job it is to reap the souls of the dead and help them ascend to the afterlife. After one assignment, the spirit they reaped, a 23-year-old nonbinary person named Remus, refused to ascend. Now, Janus is stuck with them following it around wherever they go.

Janus looked at the sight in front of them, a solemn expression on their face. In front of them laid a woman, a bullet hole in her head. No one was around them, the room standing silent. Janus didn’t really have time to worry about its surroundings though. Silently, they took their scythe handle out of the pocket of its pants, the handle extending into a scythe. Janus raised the scythe above their head, swiping at the body of the woman. The woman’s spirit rose out of her body. The spirit stumbled back a little before regaining her balance. She looked up at Janus, scared.

”Who are you?” the woman asked.

”There’s no need to fear. My name’s Janus. I’ll be your grim reaper for your ascension to the afterlife,” Janus said, holding their hand out to the woman. The woman hesitated, reaching her hand out before someone spoke up.

”Wait just a minute there!” the person said. The two turned towards the sound of the voice, seeing two people standing on the opposite side of the room. Janus rolled its eyes at the sight of Roman and Virgil.

”Who are you?” the woman asked.

”You���re Virginia Davis, right?” Virgil asked.

”Yeah…” Virginia responded.

”My name is Virgil Blackheart, and this is my friend, Roman. We are part of an elite uprising against the oppressive rule of the grim reapers,” Virgil explained.

”An uprising against the grim reapers?” Virginia asked, confused.

”Yup! We’re fighting against the reapers so that people can choose their afterlife instead of being forced to ascend,” Virgil said.

”That’s interesting…” Virginia said.

”I wouldn’t listen to him. They poisoned themself playing a drinking game during a party,” Janus said.

”For your information, I did not poison myself. The person that I thought was my friend poisoned my drink,” Virgil responded.

”Same difference,” Janus said, rolling its eyes.

”Okay, okay. Let’s say I wanted to join your uprising. How would I join?” Virginia asked.

”All you have to do is shake my friend’s hand here and you’ll officially join the uprising,” Virgil said, Roman extending her hand out.

”So, what do you say?” Roman asked.

”I…” Virginia said, looking back and forth between the two.

”Come on, Virginia. If you just ascend you can reunite with your family and boyfriend,” Janus said, extending its hand out to her.

”Umm…” Virginia started.

”Boring. Aren’t you angry that your family’s lives were taken away because of the selfish actions of your father? If you join us, we can make it so your family can be back here, on Earth, and happy again, without your father,” Roman said.

”What about my father, though…” Virginia asked.

”You won’t have to worry about him. He’ll stay in hell where he belongs,” Virgil replied. Virginia looked over to Janus then back to Virgil and Roman. She approached the two cautiously.

”If I join you, you’ll make sure I will be able to see my family again?” Virginia said.

”Yup, just shake my friend’s hand and you’ll be on your way,” Virgil said. Virginia reached her hand out to Roman’s, grabbing it and shaking it. She looked down at her hand, seeing it looking a little less ghost-like. She looked back up at Roman, who was smiling and shaking her hand.

”What happened? I feel weird,” Virginia asked.

”You’re now able to be seen by the living like this guy right here! Pretty cool right?” Virgil said.

”Yeah! That’s really cool!” Virginia said.

”No, it’s not!” Janus said, angrily. It rushed over to Roman, going behind him and holding a knife to his throat.

”You know I can kill you right here right now?” Janus said.

”But you won’t. Unless you want Remus to destroy your ass,” Roman replied. Janus backed up, dropping the knife.

”That’s what I thought. Now, come on, Virginia! Let’s go,” Roman said, the three teleporting away.

The three reappeared in a bunker like room, Roman flicking on a light switch.

”What is this place?” Virginia asked.

”This is our base of operations. It’s completely reaper proof and can only be accessed through teleportation. Since, reapers can’t teleport and have their own method of transport, that makes it completely impossible for reapers to get in,” Virgil said.

”This place is pretty small,” Virginia said.

”Oh, no. This is just the entrance lobby, we haven’t gotten into the building. We just need to wait for the elevator,” Roman said, gesturing to the closed elevator doors. Just then, the elevator doors opened. Roman walked into the elevator, holding the doors open as Virgil and Virginia got in. He hit a button for the 3rd floor, the elevator closing its doors and starting to make its decent.

”Welcome to the Living Spirit’s Uprising!” Roman said as the windows on the side of the elevator showed a giant bunker outside, populated by many different types of people.

”Woah!” Virginia said, walking to the window and looking outside.

”Pretty cool right? This place was an old abandoned atomic bomb shelter before we transformed it into our base of operations. There’s 5 floors to this place. The first floor on the bottom is the courtyard. That’s were you’ll be able to hang out with friends, play games, and just unwind. The second floor are the offices for all the officers, so you won’t really be going down there unless you’re called there. The third floor, which is were we’re going is where you’ll find all the different offices for different factions of the uprising. The fourth floor is the med bay, which is where you’ll go if you ever get injured during fights, and the fifth floor is residential housing, which is where you’ll find your apartment. I’ll take you there after the tour,” Virgil explained. The elevator soon stopped on the third floor, the three stepping out as soon as the doors opened. Everyone in the hallway perked up upon noticing the three. Logan came to the front of the crowd, smiling.

”Ah, Roman, Virgil! You’re back. I see you have a new recruit!” Logan said.

”Yup, this is Virginia!” Roman said. Logan nodded, writing something down on his clipboard.

”Well, my name is Logan. I’m who you’ll be reporting to after every mission. If you ever need me, you can either find me around the base or in my office on the second floor,” Logan said, lending his hand to Virginia. Virginia shook it.

”Alright, well I’m going to tour around with Virgil and Virginia. Can you give my report to Remus that the mission was successful?” Roman asked.

”Of course! By the way, who was the reaper you ran into while recruiting?” Logan asked.

”Oh, it was just Janus,” Roman said.

”Janus… Alright, well, I’ll leave you to your tour. Have a good day!” Logan said.

”You too, Logan!” Roman said, waving Logan off. The three walked down the hallway, coming to a room labeled “Planning and Strategy”.

”Here’s the Planning and Strategy room. This is the room Logan commands. If you get a job in here, you would be coming up with different strategies and plans for the fighting and recruitment missions,” Roman said. The two continued on to the next door, this door reading “New Recruits”.

”This is the New Recruits room. I command this room. This is where you’ll go for training if you get assigned to recruitment missions,” Virgil said. The three continued to the next door, this one reading “Resources”.

”And this is the resource room. This is where you’ll go for refills on medicine, weapons, or anything else you may need,” Roman said, opening the door. Inside, three other people talked, two standing behind a counter while the other stood in front.

”Here’s the bandages you needed,” Thomas said.

”Thanks!” Patton said, taking the bandages.

”Oh! Patton! Perfect timing! This is Virginia, she’s a new recruit. Virginia, this is Patton. He’s the commanding officer of the med bay!” Virgil said, introducing Patton.

”Nice to meet you, Virginia!” Patton said. Virginia nodded.

”Oh, Roman! Did you happen to grab some first aid kits while you were out? We’re running out,” Nico said.

”Yeah, here,” Roman said, setting the kits on the counter.

”Great! Thanks!” Nico said, putting the kits away.

”No problem,” Roman said. Logan peaked into the room, seeing Roman.

”Oh, Roman! There you are!” Logan said.

”What’s up, Logan?” Roman asked.

”Remus is requesting you in their office,” Logan replied.

”Alright, tell them I’ll be down in a minute,” Roman said. Logan nodded, walking off.

”Are you going to be alright giving Virginia the rest of the tour?” Roman asked.

”Yeah, it’s fine. You go on down to Remus,” Virgil said.

”Alright, thanks! Also, I love you, Pa!” Roman said, waving at Thomas.

”Love you too, Roman,” Thomas said, smiling and waving back. Roman ran off down the hallway, getting back into the elevator and pushing the button for the second floor.

Remus sat at their desk, anxiously fidgeting with a pen. Their wings flapped nervously as they waited for their sibling. Roman walked into the room, closing the door behind him. Remus perked up as they saw their sibling.

”Remus? You called?” Roman asked.

”Roman!” Remus said, rushing over to their sibling.

”I heard you ran into Janus! Are you okay? Are you hurt at all?” Remus said, checking their sibling for any injures.

”I’m fine, Remus. Janus didn’t really do anything, just threatened me with a knife, but I was able to shut that down pretty quickly. It’s okay, calm down. Deep breaths,” Roman said, putting his hands on Remus’s shoulder. Remus took a few deep breaths, calming down as Roman hugged them.

”Thanks, Ro,” Remus said, hugging Roman back.

”It’s no problem,” Roman said.

”Okay, now come sit,” Remus said, walking back over to their seat. Roman sat down in the seat in front of Remus’s desk, Remus sitting back down on their chair.

”Now, what’s up with the mission?” Remus asked.

”Oh, well me and Virgil were only able to get one new recruit since the others decided to ascend instead or were forced to ascend by their reaper. I also picked up a few first aid kits since Pa and Nico were running out of them in resources,” Roman said.

”It does seem like a lot more spirits are choosing ascension nowadays…” Remus said, “You also said some of the reapers were forcing an ascension?”

”Yeah, like they wouldn’t even give them a list or anything like you describe was normal, they would just slice the spirit with their scythe and make the spirit ascend. I don’t know if Janus is influencing them to force an ascension, but all I know is that some of those ascensions weren’t consensual,” Roman said. Remus rolled their eye.

”Of course, Janus would do that. It was always trying to get me to ascend when we first met. Couldn’t go a day without something along the lines of ‘Remus, why don’t you ascend? It would be really good if you did!’. It was honestly so annoying, I almost left because of it,” Remus said, playing with a pen on their desk.

”Sounds annoying,” Roman replied.

”Yeah. Well, anyways, anything else happen on the mission?” Remus asked.

”Nothing really of note… What about here? Is there anything I need to know about?” Roman asked.

”Well, we did have a pretty big amount of visitors in the med bay today, because someone decided to put tinfoil in one of the microwaves while trying to warm up their food. It resulted in the dude and his friend that was standing next to him dying and some other people around the explosion getting injured. I had the rebel reaper reap the two guys who died so we have two more people in the spirit group and two less in the living. Patton really had his work cut out for him and his crew today,” Remus said.

”The area around the explosion was repaired, right?” Roman asked.

”Oh, yeah. The area was repaired and everything was replaced. One reaper did end up getting in, but I took him out,” Remus replied.

”Alright, that’s good,” Roman said.

”Yeah, anyways, wanna go hang out with me, Pa, and Nico in the courtyard? We were planning on playing some games in the arcade section and just hanging out and unwinding for the end of the day,” Remus said.

”Of course! Just let me shower and change out of my uniform in my apartment first,” Roman said.

”Alright. Thomas and Nico were going to do the same, so we figured we’d all meet in the courtyard around 4:45,” Remus said.

”Alright, then. I’ll see you then! Love you, Remus!” Roman said.

”Love you too, Roman,” Remus replied, smiling. Roman exited Remus’s office, taking the elevator to the 5th floor and entering his apartment.

Roman opened the door to his apartment a few minutes later, going over to the elevator to find Thomas and Nico standing next to it.

”Oh, Pa! Nico! You two are here too?” Roman said.

”Yeah, we figured we might as well wait at the elevator and go down together. Remus is already at the courtyard so we were just waiting for you,” Thomas said.

”Okay, let’s go then!” Roman said. the three got into the elevator, going down to the courtyard. The elevator doors opened, Remus standing on the other side.

”Remus!” Roman said, running and jumping into his siblings arms, the two falling down laughing.

”Okay, you two. Enough horsing around. Leave that for the courtyard,” Nico said.

”Hey, remember who’s the boss here!” Remus said, jokingly.

”I’ll race you to the arcade!” Roman said, standing back up and running away.

”Oh, you are so on!” Remus said, standing up and chasing after Roman. The two chased after each other, Thomas and Nico following closely behind. The two ran inside the arcade, running over to the two Pac-Man machines.

”I’m going to beat you like I always did!” Remus said, placing some tokens into the coin slots.

”Nah, I’m going to win,” Roman said, doing the same. The two played Pac-Man together, Thomas and Nico watching as the two focused on the game.

”Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck! Stupid ass ghosts!” Remus said, banging on the game machine.

”Yes! Hah! I win!” Roman said.

”You just died,” Remus said, gesturing to the screen.

”Doesn’t matter, I still win,” Roman said.

”Well, what do you two want to do next?” Thomas asked.

”Ooo! We should have Thomas and Nico face off against each other in Pac-Man!” Remus said.

”Yes! Come on!” Roman said.

”Sure, I guess,” Nico shrugged. The twins put tokens into the coin slots, watching as the two played the game.

”Is now a bad time to say I’ve never played Pac-Man before…” Nico said, struggling with the controls.

”Probably, yeah,” Remus said, watching as Nico played the game horribly.

”Shit. Welp, there goes my game. What about you, Thomas?” Nico asked, to no reply. Nico turned to Thomas finding him completely entranced by the game.

”Oh, shit. He’s good,” Nico said, watching Thomas play.

”I’ve never seen Pa play this game before, so this is surprising to me,” Remus said.

”What’s been your farthest level?” Nico asked.

”I think Roman’s gotten somewhere around level 65, and I’ve gotten level 67 once before,” Remus said.

”Well, Pa just beat both of those,” Roman said, gesturing to Thomas’s level count which read level 75.

”Damnit!” Thomas said, snapping out of his spell.

”How did you manage to beat both me and Remus? We’ve never seen you play!” Roman asked.

”Years of watching you two compete at Pac-Man,” Thomas replied.

”Well, what should we do now?” Remus asked.

”I figured we would just get dinner together and then watch a movie in the theatre,” Thomas replied.

”Alright, then. Let’s go the the cafeteria. I am pretty hungry,” Roman said. The four walked together to the cafeteria, talking and laughing among each other until they heard commotion coming from the cafeteria and saw a bunch of people running out of it. Remus stopped one of the people running from the cafeteria, the person’s breathing heavy.

”What happened? Why’s everyone running from the cafeteria?” Remus asked.

”I don’t know, all I know is something exploded and people started running,” the person said.

”Shit! Thomas, Nico, get everyone to safety. Roman, you come with me,” Remus said. The three nodded. Thomas and Nico running off with the person while Remus and Roman ran off towards the cafeteria. They got inside, dodging debris from the explosion and looking around the room to find out where the explosion came from. Remus looked around, their eye being just fast enough to see Janus walking through a hole in the wall.

Remus jumped and literally rolled out of bed at the urgency in their voice.

"YEAH??" he yelled back.

"Get dressed and come downstairs! We're heading out and we have someone for you to meet!" his ren instructed.

"ALRIGHT!" He quickly pulled on a thin T-shirt and ripped jeans that his dad would not entirely approve of, which he didn't mind. He started down the stairs like a normal person, then sat on the rail and slid down the rest of the way, landing easily on the floor below. His dad sighed heavily upon seeing him.

"How many times do I have to tell you not to do that?" he asked. "You're going to get hurt!"

Remus just shrugged. "Nah. I'll be fine. Where's Ren?"

"They're just in the kitchen. They're making your favorite~" Logan answered in a singsong voice. Remus grinned and ran past him to the kitchen, ignoring how his dad called after him to not run. He burst into the kitchen, skidding to a stop just before he hit the wall.

"Goooood morning!!" he chirped, inhaling the delicious smells coming from the stove.

"Good morning," Dee said, smiling softly at their son's antics.

"Is that what I think it is~?" Remus asked, leaning in. His ren pushed him away by the forehead, ignoring his cry of protest.

"It is. Now go sit at the table and have patience, chaos gremlin," they said.

"Patience is boring as fuck," he declared, plopping down at the table.

"Language," Logan chided as he walked in. He walked over to Dee and planted a kiss on his cheek. Remus faked a gag, and Logan rolled his eyes. He adjusted his glasses and sat at the table next to him.

"So!" Remus started. "Ren said you have someone for me to meet?"

"Ah, yes. It's a surprise, but Dee and I are quite certain you two will get along well together," Logan answered.

"Ooo, how fun! I'm excited!" he decided, clapping. Logan smiled softly.

"I'm glad to hear that, Remus." He ruffled his hair and Remus laughed. A moment later, Dee set a plate of food in front of him - three fried eggs, wrapped in bacon and ham with molten cheese on top.

"Here's your food sin, you little gremlin," they said fondly. Remus grinned and dug in. The three of them traded idle chatter until Remus declared he was done with a loud burp.

They got in the car and headed out, dragging Remus along for boring errands, until finally, Logan got a call. He paid close attention, trying to get any details he could, but Logan was painfully vague. So, he just zoned out again as they drove to some house.

They pulled to a stop and Dee shepherded him out of the car. They knocked on the door, and a middle-aged man with a cardigan tied around his shoulders answered the door. He lit up when he saw them.

"Oh, hey! You must be Dee and Remus. I'm Patton!" He shook Remus's hand enthusiastucally. "I'll go get Roman!" And he left, just like that. Remus froze.

"...Roman?" he whispered, looking to Dee. They just smiled. A moment later, a boy came rushing out, tackling Remus in a hug. Remus yelled in delight, holding his twin close.

"Oh my God," Roman whispered, and Remus alone could tell he was on the edge of tears. "Oh my God. I thought I'd never see you again."

"Too bad, I'm here now and you can't get rid of me," Remus laughed. He helped Roman to his feet.

"Awfully bold of you to assume I want to be rid of you," he shot back. They finally noticed how everyone else was watching them. They just smiled, and as Remus hugged Roman tightly, he knew everything was going to be okay.

Whumptober Day 2: Talking is overrated

For context, this is more background to the Reunited AU, and takes place when the twins are still in high school. Roman is autistic in this AU.

Roman stared at the wall and tried to focus on the physical sensations around him.

The rough carpet against his arm.

The hard floor pushing against his hip.

The worn denim under his head.

Remus's hand in his hair.

The stinging sensation in his cheek.

He tried to breathe. Tried to keep himself present, but he was so tired.

"It's okay, Ro," Remus's voice came from above him. "I gotcha, bro."

Roman blinked at suddenly became aware of the wetness on his face. How long had he been crying?

"It's okay, Ro-Ro. You don't have to talk. I know that's hard right now."

Roman frowned. Had he said that aloud?

"I'm sorry, Ro," Remus continued. "I'm sorry she's so mean to you. It's not fair and it's not right and, no matter what she says, it's not your fault. She's the one being an ableist b-" he sighed, and for a moment, fell silent. "You don't need to be fixed. I don't care what anybody says. I'll throw them out a freaking window. We're gonna get out of here one day, Ro. We're gonna leave and we won't have to worry about her anymore, and you won't have to go to that stupid therapy anymore, and it won't matter if you shutdown or go nonverbal because we're gonna be safe. And we're gonna learn sign language or find something else and we're gonna find real things to help. I promise."

Roman squeezed his twins leg, letting him know he heard. And Remus squeezed his arm in response.

"I know, Ro-Ro. You don't have to say anything till you're ready. I can still hear you even without your words."

If I had a nickel for each time you've ripped my heart out through a series revolving around Roman and Remus being two brothers on the opposite side of a war, I'd have two nickels. Which is actually pretty neat, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

(This is me saying that I have finally caught up with the latest installment of The Light and also had the chance to read your Presumed Death Creativitwins AU, and I am Having Feeling About It™. I can't wait to know how the Virgil-Patton situation pans out in the former and wish to know more about the later, if you'd be willing to share. …Also, may I punch Janus's parents? Pretty please? And if not, may know whether Remus or anyone else ever gets to punch them?)

Aaaaaaaa, thank you, I’m so glad you like them! I’m excited for you guys to see what happens with the end of Refracting Light too, I love it so much (and then I gotta write the last one, but we won’t talk about that).

As for the presumed dead au, that started just because I wanted an “I thought you were dead hug” for my boys. But unfortunately for the rest of my wips, my writing brain started working and then I fell in love with the story and its themes and its found family. I don’t want to spoil too much, but I will say that right now I’m working on a wip that picks up after Roman and Remus reunite in the future. And yes, the future brings nothing good for Janus’ parents. I don’t know if anyone punches them specifically, but they won’t be happy.

All in all, I’m glad you’re having fun and emotions with these stories, because I am too! I hope you like what I have planned next!

Janus is a lawyer and Patton is a fashion designer that specializes in wedding tuxedos

They met and married each other in a short amount of time (a few months maybe)

Things were great for awhile. They found a surrogate who gave birth to their twins Roman and Remus

They had a falling out shortly after the twins' first birthday

Patton took Roman and moved to the other side of the country while Janus kept Remus

Nearly eleven years later Roman and Remus are both sent to the same summer camp and that's how they meet

Of course they despised each other at first and everyone realized how similarly they looked like one another

They end up getting in a lot of trouble and are forced to live with each other in an isolation cabin

They find out that they're twins through a little heart-to-heart moment

Remus comes up with the crazy idea to switch lives so they can meet their other parent

Roman agreed because he wanted to get their parents back together so they can be a family again

When Roman poses as Remus he finds out that Janus is engaged to a golddigger (I'm thinking Remy for this part) so he's desperate to try and rush the switch back so Janus realizes what a huge mistake he's made divorcing Patton and wanting to marry Remy

Might as well throw in a little Analogical with Logan as Patton's butler and Virgil as Janus' nanny who eventually get in on the twins' plan and help set things up. The two of them fall in love in the process (it's part of the movie, just go with it)

Of course there's that moment where Remy and Patton meet and Remy gets excited over Patton being his favorite designer because he was looking at Patton's tuxes for his wedding right as everyone is being reunited

I don't see Janus as much of the camping type, but there's gotta be that moment where it's Janus, Remy, and the twins alone that leads to the final straw where Janus breaks up with Remy in favor of the kids

Then you get to the happily ever after where Janus and Patton realize that they can't live without each other and they can no longer keep the boys separated

They remarry and the little family lives happily ever after
