I’m taking a bit of time after grading and running Christmas errands to reflect on the super talented students we have at @mcafeeschooloftheology. In my “Creation Theology, Spirituality, and the Arts” class, I asked the students to produce a piece of art that expresses what they learned through their interpretive papers and nature retreat. Jukabiea wrote about God as an improvisational composer in Genesis 1 and shared his own hip-hop interpretation of the passage. He composed, improvised, recorded, and mixed his composition within the 15-20 minute presentation time on the final day of class. Still basking in the creativity of our students at @mcafeeschooloftheology. They brainstormed a modern day speech from the perspective of one of Job’s friends and an alternate ending to the book of Job in a simulated “writers’ room” in my morning class. While it is still the dog days of summer, Fall is coming and it happens to be my favorite time of the year. This Fall semester, I’m teaching my “Creation Theology, Spirituality, and the Arts” class again at the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University. In the class we are exploring creation texts from the Hebrew Bible, the relationship between creation and spirituality, and the expression of our divine encounters through the arts. This year, our class is using the hashtag #CreationSpiritMcAfee to share snaps of our daily and weekly spiritual experiences related to the natural order on Instagram, FaceBook, and Twitter. I am inviting the McAfee community at large (current students not in the class, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends) to join us in this journey by following the hashtag and posting your own photography, art, poetry, or other words of wisdom with us on social media. This was a photo I took last Fall in Portland at a conference where I was gathering material for this class.
