Why Do Lions Have Manes?

This question has always made its rounds in zoologist circles, however Dr. Craig Packer was able to find a solid answer to this question.

Before, his experiment and conclusion, the major theory was that it was some sort of shield for their neck, which didn’t really add up considering fighting lions typically go for their back, hindquarters, etc. Not their throat.

Dr. Craig Packer was able to find that the darker a lion’s mane, the higher its testosterone levels were. Males with dark manes are the preferred mate of lionesses, due to their elevated aggressive nature: males with darker manes’ cubs also had higher survival rates.

Dr. Craig Packer is a biologist, zoologist, and ecologist. He is known for his research on the lions of Serengeti National Park. He is the founder and director of both the Lion Research Center and Whole Village Project, as well as the co-founder of Savannahs Forever Tanzania.

happy world lion day to my favorite animal! i’m so glad there’s a whole day to celebrate this absolutely incredible species :D lions are one of the most crucial animals in their ecosystems in both africa and india, and their social interactions are truly unique and fascinating. sadly, only around 20,000 lions remain, immeasurably fewer than their historical numbers. check out panthera, kopelion, ewaso lions, lion guardians, and other organizations to help save these extraordinary cats 🤍🦁also, i highly recommend the book “the lion: behavior, ecology and conservation of an iconic species” by craig packer. it’s an amazing book that dives deep into every aspect of lion life. here’s some cool lion clips :)

Contrary to the stereotypes of the macho ultra-masculine man being a 'lion', REAL lions are actually matrifocal pack animals! National Geographic published an article about it on July 8th, 2019:

Beautiful Moments Between Animal Mothers and Their Babies!

A Polar Bear Mom rests after nursing in Wapusk National Park in Manitoba, Canada. Polar bears mate in the spring but don't become pregnant until the fall. Then, only those females who've successfully fattened up over a summer of hunting will begin to bear young. During those months of plenty, a bear may gain more than 220 pounds, and mothers need every bit of those reserves when it's time to den. Depending on where in the Arctic they call home, polar bear moms may remain in their snowy dens for up to eight months without eating or drinking. Cubs, often twins, spend their several months in their den, enjoying their mom's high-fat milk. Moms dote on their cubs for two to three years, protecting them from threats including male polar bears. They also teach them the skills needed for life on the ice, including how to swim, hunt, and prepare dens for their own future families. A Saker Falcon and her Chicks, known as Eyases, take in the panoramic view across the vast expanse of the Mongolian plain. Mothers raise their young in existing nests f built by storks, eagles, or other birds, says Per Smiseth, a University of Edinburgh behavioral ecologist. This particular falcon mother sat on her eggs for over a month, never leaving the nest, while her mate brought her food. Both parents care for their noisy young, which fledge after about 50 days. Smiseth notes that this kind of family-focused lifestyle is far more common among birds than among most other animals. "Birds are typically very good parents," he says. Humpback whales have a calf only every two to three years and lavish it with attention. Young whales nurse for an entire year and keep growing for 10. During this time, mother and offspring travel thousands of miles from their calving grounds in tropical waters to rich summer feeding grounds in the temperate and polar seas. The whales, pictured above frolicking near Vava'u, Tonga, spend winters in Antarctica, while some North American whales journey from Alaska to Hawaii. A main threat to the calves during such journeys are orcas, also known as killer whales. Unlike most of their famously aloof kin, African lions are social cats. They live in prides dominated by related females, like this cub-wrangling mom in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. "Females are the core. The heart and soul of the pride. The males come and go," Craig Packer, director of the Lion Research Center at the University of Minnesota, told National Geographic in 2019. Female lions hang together to protect themselves from dangers, including male lions, which will kill cubs of competing males. They form a communal nursery called a crèche, and even groom and nurse each other's cubs (though they always prioritize their own). Young lions are playful, but they don't begin hunting until they are about a year old. This means they generally eat last, and competition over food, as well as infanticide, mean that many cubs are unlikely to make it to adulthood. An Emperor Scorpion, one of the World's Largest Scorpions, carries her immature offspring on her back. "Scorpions may get some bad press, but female Scorpions are very attentive parents," Smiseth says. Emperor scorpion mothers give birth to an average of nine to 32 fully formed young. These ghostly white newborns are completely dependent on their mother for the first few weeks after birth. The young don't need food, as they subsist on nutrients left over from the embryo stage until they can hunt for themselves. All scorpions practice parental care, which is perhaps why they've been around for hundreds of millions of years and live on every continent except Antarctica. "Scorpions were among the first animals to colonize dry land, and female care might be part of the key to why they were able to do that successfully," Smiseth says. A cheetah family slows down for a bit of play in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Being a cheetah mom is very hard work: During the early weeks of her cubs' lives, the mother must move them every few days to avoid predators. If all goes well, cheetah siblings stay with their mom for about a year and a half, learning to hunt. The young cats then try out their independence by hanging together as a group for another six months or so. Some cheetahs are supermoms, not only raising their own young but fostering the cubs of others. "I'm not aware of any other carnivore whose survival relies so heavily on the success of so few females," Sarah Durant, director of the Serengeti Cheetah Project, told National Geographic in 2012. An Angolan Giraffe Mother and Calf greet the dawn on the plains of Namibia. Giraffe calves are born famously well suited for life on the run, standing within 30 minutes of birth. It’s critical that they do so, as newborn calves are a favorite meal of many African predators. But before these “mini-adults” are born, mom has to endure a 15-month pregnancy, which allows for the development of a six-foot-tall baby with strong muscles and nervous system. When their calves get a bit older, female giraffes will sometimes call on “babysitters,” Verdolin says. “The mothers hang out together….The females leave their calf with another mom, and it’s sort of like a giraffe calf playgroup. A Female Gray-headed Flying Fox hangs with her young in a riverside colony in Yarra Bend Park, Victoria, Australia. Mothers typically a single pup at a time, which initially can’t regulate its own body temperature. During this time the mother wraps her young in her wings. When she ventures out at night to feed on fruits, pollen, and nectar, the pup clings to her, clawing her fur and clamping its mouth around her nipple. When pups are older, yet still too young to fly, they’re left behind in the colony’s trees. A Giant Panda Mom cradles her Cub at the Wolong Conservation and Research Center in China. The cubs are born famously tiny—just 1/900th the size of their mothers—and are blind, hairless, and totally dependent on Mama. Pandas often have twins, which means panda mothers must choose which of the pair is most likely to survive—and devote all her efforts to that cub at the expense of the other. So while practice of abandoning a less fit twin might land pandas on some lists of the animal kingdom's "bad moms," they are actually trying to be the best mothers they can. It's not that panda moms aren't devoted. For months after birth, she holds her cub almost nonstop to share body warmth and nurse. She rarely leaves the den, even to eat and drink. Starting a new year and heading into the offseason and i thought it would be cool to delve into a different position group every month for the next several months ahead.

For this month i chose tight ends and we’ve had some good ones here since the Titans started in ‘99 including Frank Wycheck,Delanie Walker,Bo Scaife,Erron Kinney,Ben Troupe,Jared Cook,etc.

Now everyone has their own opinions and many fans including myself will debate this as to who has been the best tight end so far in the short history of the team and some say Wycheck and others say Walker but either way it is definitely close.

For his NFL career Walker has a total of 504 catches for 5888 yards with 36 TDs while Wycheck has 505 catches for 5126 yards and 28 TDs.

As a Titan Walker has 381 catches for 4423 yards with 28 TDs while Wycheck has 482 catches for 4958 yards with 27 TDs.

Wycheck was also involved in one of the biggest plays of all time The Music City Miracle against Buffalo in January of 2000.

Wycheck made three straight Pro Bowls including the Titans first two seasons in Nashville in 1999 and 2000.

In December of 1999 Wycheck threw a 61 yard TD pass to WR Isaac Byrd in a win over the Atlanta Falcons.

A couple weeks later Wycheck scored 2 TDs in the first half against the Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium as the Titans jumped out to a 31-7 halftime lead and in the end Tennessee won 47-36.

A couple of years later the Titans would meet the Steelers in the postseason in January 2003 in Nashville and Wycheck along with Erron Kinney would score TDs in the third quarter that would be critical in a game that would go to OT and be decided by a FG in a 34-31 win for Tennessee.

A tight end that i always liked was Bo Scaife he played six years from 2005 through 2010 and caught 251 passes for 2383 yards and 12 TDs

The only tight ends in Titans history who have caught more passes than Scaife are Frank Wycheck and Delanie Walker and thats it.

Scaife scored the first TD in Vince Young’s infamous fourth quarter comeback in 2006 against the N.Y. Giants.

Scaife had 5 catches in the game for 34 yards including the fourth quarter TD that started the comeback.

With only ten minutes left in the game and Titans down 21-0 VY went on a mission leading Tennessee to three touchdown drives and a final drive for the game winning FG as Titans stunned Giants 24-21.

Another tight end that many fans will remember is Erron Kinney who was drafted by Tennessee in the third round and played here from 2000 through 2005 during his six years he caught 178 passes for 1750 yards and 10 TDs

Kinney caught a game winning 18 yard TD pass from Steve McNair with a little over a minute left to lift the Titans to a 23-20 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium in September of 2000.

In the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft the Titans selected TE Ben Troupe and he played well as a rookie catching 33 passes for 329 yards and a TD.

For his career in Tennessee Troupe had 106 catches for 1056 yards and 7 TDs

The Titans drafted Craig Stevens in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft and he would play for eight years from 2008 through 2015 and was mainly used as a blocker but still managed to catch 60 passes for 724 yards along with 6 TDs

Just a year after drafting Stevens the Titans drafted another tight end in 2009 Jared Cook and just like Stevens he was also drafted in the third round.

There were analysts saying before the draft that Cook could be the type of TE to last a lot of years and some even compared him to Shannon Sharpe a tremendous compliment at the time.

Overall Cook did have longevity playing 13 years although the Titans let him go in free agency after four years

As a Titan Cook had 131 catches for 1717 yards and 8 TDs and overall for his career he had 553 catches for 7237 yards and 45 TDs and played for Titans,Rams,Saints,Raiders,Packers and Chargers.

One of the best moves the Titans ever made in free agency was signing Delanie Walker in 2013.

In his first seven years in San Francisco he was mostly used as a backup but once he hit Tennessee his career took off.

Walker made three straight Pro Bowls from 2015-2017 and for a period of time was one of the best if not the best tight end in the game.

In 2015 he had 94 catches for 1088 yards and 6 TDs

For a five year period from 2013 through 2017 Walker had at least 60 catches or more every season during that span.

In 2017 the Titans drafted Jonnu Smith in the third round which seems to be their go to round for tight ends through the years.

Smith would get some mentoring from one of the best in the game in Delanie Walker.

Smith in his four years as a Titan had 114 catches for 1302 yards and 16 TDs.

One of Jonnu’s most memorable plays was his one handed TD catch in the Titans playoff win over the Ravens in January 2020.

At the end of the 2020 season Smith would move on in free agency and ended up signing with New England before the 2021 season.
