This day 3 years ago, on my first solo backpacking trip around Europe, I was in Sicily as part of my journey throughout the top to bottom of Italy. It was in the small train station of the coastal city of Cefalù where I met 78 year old solo traveler, fellow Australian, and Vietnam War Veteran, John Auditore. He was revisiting Sicily, which he had visited many years ago. ⁣ ⁣ As we both took the train back to Palermo, I got a brief glimpse into the incredibly varied and fascinating life of this stranger I had just met. He spoke of some of his life lessons, his travels, and about his family, who were back in Melbourne, Australia. He spoke little of his time in the military. ⁣ ⁣ As it turns out, John had been grabbing his backpack and just going. Working odd jobs. Saving. Coming back to Australia. Leaving again. I saw some similarities with the current way I have been intentionally designing my life. ⁣ ⁣ John had been traveling to far away places, with cultures and languages he never heard of, way back since the 70s and 80s. Many of these places are still considered off the beaten track today. He never stopped. ⁣ ⁣ Just this year (3 years on) John was planning to solo travel through Pakistan because, why not see something extremely different? Then he planned to travel to various pockets around the world where he had friends waiting to see him. ⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Right now, he is on a strict lockdown in Melbourne, with family visiting to check up on him. John just gets on with it though, and sometimes we call to catch up. I will listen to his stories, and he will listen to my plans. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Like mine (and probably yours), John's travel plans are on hold due to the current COVID-19 travel restrictions.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What an amazing person to know. A masked Spiderman and friends bring joy to Melbourne’s locked-down suburb

Melburnians are trying to uplift people’s spirits during the pandemic

With Melbourne in a winter COVID-19 lockdown for six weeks, any ray of sunshine is especially welcome. It seems that Spiderman has been bringing just that for some time during the coronavirus pandemic. St Kilda is an iconic bayside inner suburb, usually bubbling with backpackers and other visitors from around the globe. It has played a big part in your author’s life, not the least because of its Australian Football League club that began there. It’s an unlikely place to find our superhero as there are few very tall buildings. Perhaps that’s why Spiderman has taken to jogging. Local Jack Latimore’s son has been lucky enough to spot him more than once:

Another resident, activist Asher Wolf, is well known on social media. The photo at the top of this post is from one of her tweets in June 2020. It was taken in Carlisle Street, Balaclava, which is part of East St Kilda. She replied to Jack’s tweet and also explained that another encounter was before the current 8 p.m. curfew:

Spiderman was wearing a mask before they became compulsory for most outdoor activities. He couldn’t have known that jogging and cycling would be the two mask-free activities allowed during the maximum one hour’s exercise within five kilometres of your home each day.
