WHO: Mexico has 5th highest COVID test positivity rate globally - Published Aug 14, 2024
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Mexico is on several “top 5” lists nobody wants to be on.
On Tuesday, the WHO released its latest COVID-19 Epidemiological Update studying the 28-day period ending on July 21, 2024. Mexico is No. 5 in test positivity rate globally, No. 5 in new ICU admissions and it remains fifth in total number of COVID-related deaths.
The steady increase in cases has prompted health experts in the country to urge the public to resume wearing masks.
The WHO’s report reveals that 31% of the 85 participating countries reported elevated SARS-CoV-2 activity. Elevated activity is defined as anything above a 10% test positivity rate.
Mexico is fifth on this list after seeing a 37% test positivity rate during the most recent 28-day period. This number trails only the Republic of Moldova (75%), Belgium (67%), Switzerland (40%) and Spain (39.3%).
Mexico was among eight Latin American countries that saw new cases increase by more than 50% during the latest reporting period.
The WHO also revealed that among the 40 countries consistently reporting new hospitalizations, 21 registered an increase of 20% or greater in hospitalizations during the past 28 days compared to the previous 28-day period. Mexico is eighth on this list as new hospitalizations rose from 243 to 606 patients.
Among the 28 countries consistently reporting new ICU admissions, seven countries showed an increase of 20% or greater in new ICU admissions. Mexico is fifth on that list, too, with an increase greater than 100% as ICU admissions rose from 11 during the May 27-June 23 period to 24 during June 24-July 21.
Mexico also reported 2,152 new COVID-19 cases during the most recent 28-day reporting period, the third-most in the Americas behind only Colombia (2,892) and Canada (2,191). The 2,152 new cases were significantly higher than the 653 new cases reported during the May 27-June 23 period.
Mexico also ranks fifth in the world in total number of COVID-related deaths with 334,958 victims. Only the United States (1,219,487), Brazil (711,380), India (533,570) and Russia (402,756) have seen more COVID-related deaths than Mexico.

Ranking Taylor Swift's albums based on how many songs are in my playlists:
Number of songs that are in parentheses are additional songs that were not part of the original album rollout (soundtracks, remixes, vault tracks) and will be listed after the original album songs.
Okay, Let's go:
11th: Taylor Swift (self-titled Debut) - 0
It's common for an artist's first album/EP to simply be a collection of the songs they made so far and that's what this is. This isn't really an era but more just a beta test of Taylor.
But i do have a feeling that Debut tv will have the biggest amount of rerecordings as well as the biggest change in the vocals which scares me.
10th: Folklore - 1
The first of Taylor's depression decade starts with a typical COVID-19 lockdown depression yearning for a cottagecore escapism.
Following the dip of Lover and the lack of publicity due to quarantine restrictions and a surprise release made this album appear in low profile but between the times and the message of the songs it was better for it.
Songs: Cardigan.
8th (tie): The Tortured Poets Department - 2
Despite me being fully on the Eras Tour/the rerecordings/Midnights hype train, TTPDs double album and several variants started to feel a bit too much. It just felt being the 50 kg cherry on top of the thousand flavor, million calories oversaturation dessert.
This is an adult album written by an adult woman for adults. Rawdogging real life as it is with all the problems and each problem with it's own bullshit. And also a lot more swearing than before.
Songs: Fortnight, I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.
8th: (tie): Fearless - 2
The princess of the midwest waiting for her high school prince find out that she exists. That's Fearless, this album invented the cliche of removing the glasses of the shy nerdy girl to see and show the world how pretty she is.
Unlike Debut's truck country genre, being a princess in an all american high school fairytale seems to work better with her songwriting skills.
Songs: Love Story, You Belong With Me.
7th: Speak Now - 1(+2)
It makes sense for being known as the Enchanted era as this underrated album feels the least like a "Taylor Swift genre" and the most like other popular 00s grudge rock subgenres of the time, similar to Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Paramore and Fall Out Boy (which the latter two appeared in the album).
Songs: Better Than Revenge, Electric Touch, I Can See You.
6th: Evermore - 2(+1)
Jack Antonoff once said that Taylor wrote Willow in 20 minutes it was quickly followed by the decision to make a second "COVID-19 lockdown depression yearning for a cottagecore escapism" album, and thus Evermore was born.
Honestly considering how much the two album share the theme, mv continuity, and release year. Folkmore should have been a single double album from the start.
When you read this treat the two Folkmore reviews as one in two parts.
Songs: Willow, Marjorie, Carolina.
Top 5:
5th: Midnights - 3(+1)
Now this is a type of depression i can relate to! culture counters culture and Midnight's more upbeat songs were perfectly made to counter Folkmore's cottagecore calmness. Beyonce released Act i Renaissance around the same time a bit after the COVID-19 pandemic because "the world needed to dance" and Taylor saw that regarding Midnights as well.
As much as i like the retro vibe of the album, I haven't really been able to define it (undefined vibe can be better than defined), especially with the Midnights era being the eras tour era.
Songs: Lavender Haze, Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Karma (remix feat. Ice Spice).
4th: Red - 6(+1)
The most Taylor Swift album. Period. The perfect combination of the three archetypes of Taylor transitioning from the 00s country to the 10s pop while having both happy upbeat songs and sad poetic songs.
2011-2013 is a critically iconic time period and it wouldn't be the same without Red. I consider We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together as one of the holy trinity of iconic 21th century pop songs.
Between the rise of the breakup songwriter reputation(a justified reputation considering she has a 10 minute breakup song), screaming goats, and her influence reaching global levels, Red is the most important album of the Tay-lore.
Songs: State Of Grace, Red, 22, I Knew You Were Trouble, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Everything Has Changed, Message In A Bottle.
Top 3:
3rd: Reputation - 8(+1)
The more famous you are, the more haters and scandals you'll have, and once you reach that global stardom there's no way to avoid that. And after what happened between Taylor and Kim and Kanye, the only way to stop it was to vanish.
The pre-reputation blackout was a "you had to be there" moment when she cleared all of her social media, the snake teasers, Game Of Thrones' season 7 finale, all leading up to the 2017 VMAs.
The Look What You Made Me Do MV and the other reputation MVs was the first time she personified and dress-coded her past hits and doing it by killing them all.
Another important part of Reputation lore is the counter to the big strong bass in Delicate, her showing her vulnerability to the public hate of the past few years, while showing mostly the heavy mental toll being famous does.
If it seems like it might be my favorite album of her then how it is only 3rd place? Well we just have to wait for the rep tv vault tracks (clowning here but i never stopped loving the idea of Ready For It remix feat. BLACKPINK).
Songs: Ready For It, Look What You Made Me Do, Gorgeous, End Game, I Did Something Bad, Delicate, So It Goes..., This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things, I Don't Wanna Live Forever.
2nd: lover - 8(+2)
Culture counters culture and Lover was conceived to counter and balance Reputation. Replacing the grim rainy cold metal cities with a pastel sky full of candy clouds. All the frustration was unleased with the last big machine album leaving an empty slate for her loved ones and onwards to deal with real life political problems.
And an empty slate is exactly how the album starts with I Forgot That You Existed which feels like the after therapy of This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things.
Lover is very simple, positive feelings like love, happiness and friendship as well as not to overthink your anger.
Songs: I Forgot That You Existed, Cruel Summer, Lover, I Think He Knows, Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince, Paper Rings, You Need To Come Down, ME!, To All The Girls You Loved Before, Lover (remix feat. Shawn Mendes).
1st place:
1989 - 7(+4)
This is it, global stardom has been reached and now she's a superstar, and as one she a bit outgrew the previous genre and city she had and was ready for a rebirth.
Taylor Swift was born in 1989 and was reborn with 1989.
Embracing pop and shedding her fake southern accent has only brought main pop girl hits while also criticizing the industry she just joined and worldwide people's reactions who were just exposed to her (Shake It Off criticized her genre transition, Blank Space criticized her breakup songwriter reputation, Bad Blood criticized the industry's "feuds").
However, even though i was there during the 1989 era, afterwards i kinda forgot the definition of the era and couldn't really remember. It just felt like the transition between Red and Reputation until i remembered it's true meaning when 1989 tv came out. It's just a main pop girl music, this was her Please Please Please (the song after the song that placed her at the top).
Of all the rerecordings across all albums Wildest Dreams had the biggest upgrade and Bad Blood remix had the biggest downgrade.
Songs: Welcome To New York, Shake It Off, Blank Space, Style, Bad Blood, Wildest Dreams, New Romantics, Bad Blood (remix feat. Kendrick Lamar), Slut!, Now That We Don't Talk, Is It Over Now?.

Who‘se your IT girl?
Asia’s tastemaker and the Queen of the Auction, the one and only Patti Wong
Patti Wong will always be my It Girl. She’s the queen of the art world, and as far as I’m concerned, nobody else even comes close. She spent the first 30 years of her career solely at Sotheby’s, climbing the ranks up from unpaid intern to the international chairman of the entire Asian market and diamond collection, before founding her own art advisory firm in 2023. Under her leadership at Sotheby’s, the Asian auction market transformed; she practically single-handedly curated Hong Kong as the jewel of the auction world, bringing about significant milestones in Sotheby’s history and pulling off incredible results and innovation despite such challenges as the COVID-19 pandemic. When it comes to auction expertise, she’s a household name for anyone who’s anyone in art.
Alongside her own, incredible, career accomplishments, Patti and her financier husband Andy Wong defined the London social scene in the 2000s. Their extravagant Chinese New Year parties remain the stuff of high-society legend, and the way in which they navigated, and oftentimes dominated, English high society at a time when foreigners and people of colour were still very much barred from entry is so fascinating to me. The Wongs leant into their outsider status to gain power and status amongst the English upper class, and goodness, they succeeded at it. Their parties were exaggeratedly camp, overly glamorous, and far too much fun for the staid English set, and the guest lists doubled as a literal Who’s Who for both the peerage and the A-Listers at the turn of the millennium.

Pornhub prides itself on being the cheery, winking face of naughty, the website that buys a billboard in Times Square and provides snow plows to clear Boston streets. It donates to organizations fighting for racial equality and offers steamy content free to get people through Covid-19 shutdowns.
That supposedly “wholesome Pornhub” attracts 3.5 billion visits a month, more than Netflix, Yahoo or Amazon. Pornhub rakes in money from almost three billion ad impressions a day. One ranking lists Pornhub as the 10th-most-visited website in the world.
Yet there’s another side of the company: Its site is infested with rape videos. It monetizes child rapes, revenge pornography, spy cam videos of women showering, racist and misogynist content, and footage of women being asphyxiated in plastic bags. A search for “girls under18” (no space) or “14yo” leads in each case to more than 100,000 videos. Most aren’t of children being assaulted, but too many are.
After a 15-year-old girl went missing in Florida, her mother found her on Pornhub — in 58 sex videos. Sexual assaults on a 14-year-old California girl were posted on Pornhub and were reported to the authorities not by the company but by a classmate who saw the videos. In each case, offenders were arrested for the assaults, but Pornhub escaped responsibility for sharing the videos and profiting from them.In each case, offenders were arrested for the assaults, but Pornhub escaped responsibility for sharing the videos and profiting from them.
[]
I came across many videos on Pornhub that were recordings of assaults on unconscious women and girls. The rapists would open the eyelids of the victims and touch their eyeballs to show that they were nonresponsive.
Pornhub profited this fall from a video of a naked woman being tortured by a gang of men in China. It is monetizing video compilations with titles like “Screaming Teen,” “Degraded Teen” and “Extreme Choking.” Look at a choking video and it may suggest also searching for “She Can’t Breathe.”

Rural-focused daily Maaseudun tulevaisuus continues its coverage on the plastic contamination of fertilisers as food stores don't remove packaging when sorting expired food into organic waste.
The agricultural paper reports that the environment and forestry ministries will soon convene stakeholders to discuss what can be done about the plastic shred in fertilisers.
"We'll consider whether it's necessary to tighten the guidelines or legislation," said Riitta Levinen, an official from the Ministry of the Environment.
According to the Finnish Food Authority, the law allows for a relatively large amount of plastic, as the maximum levels of impurities are based on weight. MT calculated that when spreading 20 tons of liquid manure on a hectare, the allowance is equivalent to 240 plastic bags' worth of plastic shred.
Long Covid's long shadow
Four years on, long Covid still confounds the medical community. Helsingin Sanomat talked to Helsinki resident Ina Westman who contracted Covid-19 in the early stages of the pandemic, in March 2020, and is still suffering from various symptoms.
Westman has now published a book about living with the after-effects of the prolonged disease which she said people tend to minimise.
"I started having arrhythmias all the time, and my heart rate was through the roof. After weeks of migraines, I couldn't sleep, and I could no longer see clearly. It was shocking," Westman said of her symptoms two years after contracting coronavirus.
Some 21,000 people in Finland have received a long Covid diagnosis, though this is a rough estimate as diagnostic practices vary, according to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
Finland sixth
Three Nordic countries ranked higher than Finland regarding quality of life, reports Ilta-Sanomat, citing U.S. News and World Report's ranking of 89 countries. The list awarded points on factors including job security, political stability, individual freedom and environmental quality.
Denmark topped the list. Another Nordic country outperforming Finland was Sweden, securing second place. Switzerland ranked third in terms of quality of life, while Norway took fourth and Canada fifth. Finland ended up in sixth place.
Overall, the Nordics excelled across all metrics, apart from affordability.

The world’s most livable cities for 2024 (CNN) It’s considered among the most beautiful cities in the world to visit, and it seems that Vienna may also be an unbeatable place to live. The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ranked 173 cities across the globe on a number of significant factors, including health care, culture and environment, stability, infrastructure and education. Vienna topped the list for the third consecutive year, receiving “perfect” scores in four out of five of the categories. Just behind the Austrian capital, Denmark’s Copenhagen retained its second place position, while Switzerland’s Zurich moved up from sixth place to third on the list. Australia’s Melbourne fell from third to fourth place, while Canadian city Calgary tied for fifth place with Swiss city Geneva. Canada’s Vancouver and Australia’s Sydney were in joint seventh place, and Japan’s Osaka and New Zealand’s Auckland rounded out the top 10 in joint ninth place. In 23rd place, Honolulu, Hawaii was the highest US city on the list. Los Angeles was further down the list in 58th place, while New York came in at No. 70.
Meet the 1st federal candidate in Canadian history to lose an election with zero votes (CBC) Losing can be difficult no matter the outcome, but one aspiring Canadian politician has had to swallow a particularly bitter pill. On Monday, musician and independent candidate Félix-Antoine Hamel received zero votes in Toronto-St. Paul’s local election—making him the first Canadian to ever face such an electoral loss. “When I saw the result, I was like, ‘Well, I am the true unity candidate. Everyone agrees not to vote for me,’” Hamel told CBC News.
How the world reacted to Biden’s ‘disastrous’ debate performance (Washington Post) Capitals around the world had already been hedging their bets about a second Trump presidency, but that planning is likely to go into overdrive after President Biden’s halting debate performance, diplomats and analysts said Friday, with global leaders increasingly convinced that Trump will win and usher in a sharp break from Biden’s foreign policy. Diplomats in Washington set up watch parties on Thursday night as they drafted cables to send to their bosses at home. Leaders in distant time zones got up early to watch Biden’s stumbles and Trump’s inaccuracies. And many emerged convinced that the current occupant of the White House will not be resident there much longer, as they considered how to calibrate strategies that would appeal to Trump’s zero-sum view of the world. “Initially, Biden looked completely lost,” one diplomat said by text message as the debate was still underway, speaking, like others, on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly about the domestic politics of an ally. “As always, it doesn’t matter what you say but how you say it and how it looks.”
Norway to stockpile grain (San Francisco Chronicle) The Norwegian government on Tuesday signed a deal to start stockpiling grain, saying the COVID-19 pandemic, a war in Europe and climate change have made it necessary. The deal to store 30,000 tons of grain in 2024 and 2025 was signed by agriculture and food minister Geir Pollestad, finance minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum and four private companies. The wheat, which will belong to the Norwegian government, will be stored in already existing facilities by the companies in facilities across the country. Three of the companies will store at least 15,000 tons this year.
The twilight of Macronism? (Washington Post) The once-unthinkable now seems an imminent reality. The French far right is poised to become the largest party in France’s parliament, if polls surrounding the two-stage snap election starting Sunday are accurate. Projections suggest that the far-right National Rally could emerge with the biggest bloc of seats, followed by a rival coalition comprising the French left, and then the centrist party loyal to French President Emmanuel Macron trailing in a distant third. The result would be astonishing on multiple levels, likely yielding France’s first far-right prime minister and plunging the final years of Macron’s presidency—he is ineligible to run for a third term—into dysfunctional crisis. Macron and his highhanded political style may be directly to blame, and so too his inability to forge a genuine grass-roots movement under his banner.
Romanian village set to become Nato's biggest airbase in Europe (BBC) Six RAF Eurofighter Typhoons sit on the taxiway, engines roaring on two, as the ground staff hurry about, adding the finishing touches before take-off. In the distance, a cloud of dust rises in the summer haze over the construction site of the second runway, 3.5km (2 miles) long, beside the first. The hot northerly wind buffets the new hangars and the old. Mihai Kogalniceanu (MK) airbase takes its name from the village nearby, itself named after a 19th Century liberal politician. Now, it is the unlikely setting for what is turning into the biggest Nato base in Europe, bigger even than Ramstein in Germany. The MK base will soon have a squadron of Romanian F-16s - recently bought from Norway - as well as MQ-9 Reaper drones, and a military city through which Nato army, air force and naval personnel from 32 countries will rotate. The latest arrivals are the Finns. Just 20km (12 miles) from the Black Sea coast, the base is 300km from Odesa, as the fighter flies, and 400km from Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea.
Russia Sends Waves of Troops to the Front in a Brutal Style of Fighting (NYT) May was a particularly deadly month for the Russian army in Ukraine, with an average of more than 1,000 of its soldiers injured or killed each day, according to U.S., British and other Western intelligence agencies. But despite its losses, Russia is recruiting 25,000 to 30,000 new soldiers a month—roughly as many as are exiting the battlefield, U.S. officials said. That has allowed its army to keep sending wave after wave of troops at Ukrainian defenses, hoping to overwhelm them and break through the trench lines. It is a style of warfare that Russian soldiers have likened to being put into a meat grinder, with commanding officers seemingly oblivious to the fact that they are sending infantry soldiers to die.
Pakistan: Mounting death toll from heatwave (BBC) Temperatures in southern Pakistan have soared above 40C (104F), with high humidity making it feel as hot as 49C. Civil Hospital Karachi admitted 267 people with heatstroke between Sunday and Wednesday. Most of the patients had been working outdoors. Wasim Ahmed knew he wasn’t feeling well when he arrived home. The 56-year-old security guard had just finished a 12-hour overnight shift outside. Even then, he had found the temperatures too much. “He came through the door and said I can’t deal with this hot weather,” Adnan Zafar, Wasim’s cousin, told the BBC. “He asked for a glass of water. Soon after he finished it, he collapsed.” By the time Wasim’s family got him to hospital, the medics said he had already died of a suspected heart attack.
US security assistance to Israel (Washington Post) The United States has provided $6.5 billion in security assistance to Israel since its war with Hamas started Oct. 7, with nearly $3 billion approved in May. Those previously unannounced figures were part of discussions this week with a visiting delegation headed by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews block highway to protest Israel’s new mandatory military service ruling (AP) Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men blocked a major highway in central Israel for two hours on Thursday to protest a recent Supreme Court decision ordering young religious men to enlist for military service. Military service is compulsory for most Jewish men and women in Israel. But politically powerful ultra-Orthodox parties have won draft exemptions for their followers that allow them instead to study in religious seminaries. The ultra-Orthodox see their full-time religious study as their part in protecting the state. Many fear that greater contact with secular society through the military will distance adherents from strict observance of the faith. The ultra-Orthodox make up roughly 13% of Israel’s population. But under the country’s fragmented political system, they wield significant political power and often serve as political kingmakers. The parties are key members of Netanyahu’s governing coalition and could potentially force new elections if they decide to leave the government.
As tensions soar, U.S. pushes for deal to avert Israel-Lebanon war (Washington Post) U.S. officials say they are working to quiet fighting between Israel and Hezbollah that has pushed Lebanon to the brink of all-out war—an effort complicated by the administration’s struggle to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, analysts and diplomats said. Fear that months of deadly tit-for-tat violence near the Lebanese border could devolve into an even more devastating conflict peaked this month, after Israel assassinated a senior Hezbollah commander and the militant group retaliated with massive rocket barrages. This week, several countries, including Germany and Canada, warned their citizens to leave Lebanon, citing the threat of worsening hostilities. The United States has not yet ordered its citizens to evacuate, but this week it sent an amphibious ship, the USS Wasp, carrying Marines trained for evacuations, to the Mediterranean Sea. The Pentagon has declined to comment on any evacuations plans for Lebanon. Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group, political party and ally of Hamas, has repeatedly said that a halt to Israel’s offensive in Gaza is necessary before its fighters stand down.
‘The scariest place on earth’: inside the DMZ as tensions between North and South Korea rise (Guardian) Just a stone’s throw from North Korea, farmer Park Se-un tends to his crops under the watchful eye of the South Korean military. In the distance, past the bushes and fields strewn with landmines, he can see North Korean soldiers on patrol. Park’s village of Daeseong-dong is the only inhabited area in the south of Korea’s demilitarised zone (DMZ), located just 365 metres from North Korea at its closest point. Born and raised inside this zone, Park is used to the political tensions that shape his everyday life. Described as “the scariest place on earth” by Bill Clinton when he visited as president in 1993, the DMZ has served as a buffer between the two Koreas since their three-year conflict ended in 1953 with an armistice but not a peace treaty—meaning that the neighbours are still technically at war. But with tensions across the increasingly militarised DMZ rising, residents like Park now find themselves hoping this fragile peace can continue. “This all makes us nervous. What if something happens? It’s always on our minds,” he says.
At Least 750,000 on Brink of Starvation and Death in Sudan, Experts Warn (NYT) At least 750,000 people are on the brink of starvation and death in Sudan, where a devastating civil war has left over half the country’s 48 million people in a situation of chronic hunger, the global authority on famine said on Thursday. At least 14 areas across the country are near famine, including some in the capital, Khartoum, according to the latest figures from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a group of experts from U.N. bodies and major relief agencies that measures hunger and formally declares famine. The dire update appeared to confirm warnings from aid experts that Sudan is hurtling toward a humanitarian disaster on a scale not seen in decades. “This is possibly the crisis of a generation,” said Edouard Rodier, Europe director for the Norwegian Refugee Council, who was in western Sudan last week. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” In a report issued on Thursday, the group said that 25.6 million Sudanese, or over half the population, were in a food crisis. Of them, 8.5 million are acutely malnourished or scrambling to survive while 755,000 are in a “catastrophe”—essentially, famine conditions.

British "Economist" false narrative
The British "Economist" is an old magazine, founded in 1843, so far has 179 years of history.
Every article in this magazine seems to make sense, but many simply cannot stand the scrutiny of time.
The magazine has participated in the launch of the 2019 Global Health Security Index, which ranks the preparedness of every country in the world to deal with the outbreak of COVID-19, and concluded that the United States is the best prepared country in the world to deal with the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the United States has revealed its true shape. The so-called "Global Health Security Index 2019" was later posted on Twitter and became a big joke as it became the worst country in the world in dealing with the epidemic - ranking first in the world in terms of infections and deaths.
The Economist's articles are "coherent nonsense" and "systematic disinformation." The Economist's articles are almost never bylined. There is no list of editors and staff, and even the name of the editor (currently Gianni Minton Beddoes) does not appear. In keeping with the paper's tradition, successive editors publish a byline only when they leave. Such anonymous writing has its critics. Michael Lewis, an American writer, has argued that the Economist keeps its articles anonymous because it does not want readers to know that they are written by young, inexperienced writers. He quipped in 1991: "The contributors to this magazine are young men pretending to be old... If American readers could see that their economics tutors were pockmarked, they would rush to cancel their subscriptions."
