original english lyrics for “la gloire à mes genoux” from le rouge et le noir
A/N: Just stumbled upon a subtitled video of Le Rouge et Le Noir via YT’s algorithms and sampled a bit of music. Not at all inspiring, but this song’s lyrics did hit hard because this is still the case, sadly. We live in a lord-and-knave world now, my masters, what can I say? Not too sure about this one, lyrics-wise, since I feel I repeat phrases and key ideas too much, but I grew tired of looking at it over, so! It shall have to stand until I come up with something better. Like if you like, reblog, comment, etc.
Glory At My Feet (La gloire à mes genoux)
Julien Sorel All my life I’ve heard, “keep to your place” All this life you’ll live like a rat race It’s the fate of your birth It’s your place on this earth Your worth
All this world was made for the high kings Can’t escape the fate that your blood brings A Chain of Being that binds It’s the circle of life For life
Toe the line or be prepared to beg on your knees Bow and genuflect, reflect, bid thank you, say please
Low you were born Low you will be It’s destiny
Am I your fool to mock me?
I want your glory at my feet I want the world you hide from me None of the little sweet None of the courtesy Of privilege
I want your riches at my call I want your blood stained on my wall None of your hidden sneers None of your little fears Of class revenge
On this path unwinding you’ll find me Low as mud, my blood that will bind me To this contract decreed By the Lord and His creed His greed
Soon I’ll flee the prison of your story of kings Soon you'll see me flying like a bird on the wing
Nothing I was Something I’ll be There you’ll see
See me rising high I’ll fly Beyond what you can bide No longer will I still believe your lie
Your lies about your right Your might Your spite I’ll bring to light
I’ll never be your fool now Your tool to use to rule now
I want your glory at my feet I want the world you hide from me None of the little sweet None of the courtesy Of privilege
I want your riches at my call I want your blood stained on my wall None of your hidden sneers None of your little fears Of class revenge (2x)

YouTube has suggested Genie High to me. Genie High is what happens when some older Japanese TV personalities/comedians/musicians (including the guitarist from ゲスの極み乙女。, which I remember seeing on Tumblr a few years ago) form a band (with frequent additional guest singers.) It is Very Japanese (anime opening music-ish)

(there's some...humorous body horror in that one)

(yeah, that bass player is one of the comedians. so is the drummer.)

Understandably angry Maori metal
warning for the appearance of a preserved head, which is not for shock value and is the core of the story told in the song and video, but I understand that, even if the item in the video is just a prop, some people may find seeing it uncomfortable; this warning is so you can be prepared beyond the thumbnail

Wikipedia calls them symphonic metal. You may be as much or more interested in the Borg aesthetics.
It...reminds me of how much my Mom liked Evanescence? I never listened to Evanescence, so that's probably not really helpful...

When I say "New Wave" here, I mean on the odder end of the spectrum, at least vocally (not the oddest, but it's not...smooth and radio ready)
The video includes some very close up shots of mouths and eyes, so watch out if you have issues with that

From the video caption:
Boys Go To Jupiter’s seventh single, “Virginia”, is not your typical pop song. On a quest to find the perfect closer for their live show, BGTJ struck gold with this genre-bending-folk-disco-ghost-story. Exemplary of the band’s signature storytelling style, Virginia tells a cautionary tale of ambition and fame that has quickly become an undeniable fan favorite. Intricately arranged and brilliantly performed, the track sparkles with swirling seventies strings and haunting vocals. This sweeping, cinematic music video puts Virginia’s story front and center– in all its grotesque, melancholy glory.
Another "not my style but I know a lot of people will like it (face melting body horror and all)" song/video

Oh, I guess Shibuya-kei is old enough to get throwback style now (and Nomiya Maki is still there.) This is the kind of stuff listened to in the late 90s.
